Wenger talks about spending money at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger not scared to spend by AH
Arsenal manager Arséne Wenger has told reporters that he isn’t afraid to spend the money Arsenal have in the bank – if the right player(s) are available. Arsenal are often slated for their lack of spending in the transfer windows and although we bought fantastic players in Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, we sold Robin Van Persie and Alex Song, totalling up the money exchanges to about a loss of around £15 million.
This is an improvement for Arsenal, who normally make a profit through their transfer window dealings overall. This leads to pressure on Wenger and the board, from fans, the media and for the first time players. And today Wenger told reporters;
“We want to spend our money in the right way. We are not scared to spend the money”
“With some clubs we can’t compete on certain players – and for the rest, we only want to bring in players who add something to our squad and give a chance as well to the young players we have.”
“We have good players, because to buy one more, we have to get one out.”
“Our numbers are good. Under the actual circumstances this is quite positive because the whole (global) environment is not positive.”
“We are very lucky because we have a good support and the income of our gates is very high. We have to maintain that by keeping our fans happy and to continue to manage well in the way that we do it.”
I don’t want Arsenal to become a rich filled club, that buys anyone they can and build up huge debts, but I do think it’s possible to sign a few more quality players by shelling out a few more million every transfer window. Arsenal reportedly has £50 million in the bank set aside for Transfer purposes. It would be great for Arsenal fans to see that used to win some trophies.

How did we make a 15 million loss? We sold Van Persie for 24, Song for 15 and Vella for 5, totalling 44 million. Spent 16 on Cazorla, 11 on Podolski and 13 on Giroud, totalling 40 million. Seems to me we actually mad a profit.

I think we should be proud to be a financially sensible club and not spend ridiculous amounts. It is gross when Chelsea spend £50m on a player (although hilarious when it’s Torres). And it seems strange to me that fans attack Man City for buying the title and also Wenger for not spending more.
And who says spending money brings success anyway? Look at Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool – who are now 18th. Portsmouth also didn’t have much luck after spending big.
I find it exciting that we are built very efficiently for the long term. It means that we will stay competing for years, perhaps decades to come, rather than tailing off down the table after Wenger leaves.

Wow, you need to get your facts right. We actually made a small profit on buying and selling players.
As far as our cash balance? We actually have little over 150 mil in the bank but most of it is not available for transfers. It is for servicing our debt and other expenses.
Useless article.

I think arsenal are a well run club, and for the FIRST time in years other teams are taking arsenal very seriously, the Shieks have ploughed more then half a billion in tranfer funds to MAN C and they struggled againt the prudent and well run club that arsenal are, this proves a MASSIVE point that AW knows about quality over quantity, I really do hope we win silverwear this season to prove this point!

As we all have been saying for months – we need a proven striker. Doesn’t have to be the worlds greatest, just someone who can score goals (with a track record in the EPL). I still wish we had gotten Dempsey. I just pray Giroud starts slotting them in now he’s popped one in.

I think its shocking that in the current financial climate our board and manager have to repeatedly explain and defend making a profit. The media and sporting world should hold us up as a shining example. Look at what we have done in 20 years. We changed english football for ever, changed player preperation (diets and training) scouting, then we built one of the best training centres in the world (england use it) A state of the art medical centre. One of the best youth academies around. Not to mention a 60,000 seater stadium constructed pretty much on budget and on time (look at wembly, liverpool, spurs and chelsea all want new stadiums but cant do it) and we changed the fave of north london with our developments (still ongoing) all while remaining in the top 4, competing in some years, making a profit and working with the comunity and donating. And yet we get slagged off just cos we earned our place at the top table and didn’t get bought by some bloke who got board of championship manager so tried the real thing with his parents money. Long live the Arsenal

Arsenal have not bought a replacement for Van Perse. IMHO Falcao who will not cost more than 40M should be that replacement. Folkes What do you think?

I am sure Wenger won’t spend big in January. I believe we have a decent squad. He might consider selling Arshavin, Chamakh and Squillaci. He might also send a couple of youngsters on loan. But if he does buy, he would go for 1 versatile defender and maybe an attacker.

Agreed with Arun in that we could use funds to improve our medical team, and seeing that most of the top footballer’s make the trip over to Germany when they need to see the best specialists and in us recruiting well in German football maybe we should invest in the best medical team that Germany has to offer.

I am very pleased with Giroud posing a constant threat to any opposing team; he is strong, quick and can take shots. The addition Wenger needs to look for are players like Defou, Ba or Dempsy, who are known scorers. If we get one such player the front will be complete. The other position to be concerned is the holding midfield, where Arteta is currently struggling to cover. Arteta lacks the speed and strength to play that position; he might be a good sub to give other players a breather but not to play him full game. I am absolutely sure Coquline could play that position better than Arteta. I hope Wilshire will fill in that position. Another position to be conserned about is the center back position, despite his improved display against City, Mertzenker’s phyical strength is highly questionable, he appeared rather clumsy during games and he tend to make too many touches on the ball before he passes it to mid field players. It looks like he could not kick the ball across the mid line to create a quick counter attack moments and for his height; he has very poor timing for header. We need one more addition in the center back position, we are one injury away from getting back to last season’s position where we had to rely on Djourou. I admire Wenger for taking off Szchezny from starting lineup and he should replace him permanently. I take menone any day and he is getting better with each game.

With Arsenal the focus now should be on building a lasting team spirit. We have good players returning back to full fitness heading towards the winter madness. With enough focus and resilience i believe we can crack the premiership.CONCENTRATION! CONCENTRATION!AND MORE CONCENTRATION.That is all it takes!!!

That all Mr Wenger does is talk about spending money, but it just all talk. The book Mr Wenger should write is how to sucker the Fan’s into thinking I am going to spend money.
The difference between Arsenal and Chelsea yesterday was John Terry a leader something Arsenal lack we need another Tony Adams at the back. Mr Wenger knows this but does nothing about it.
