Arsene Wenger’s Training and Practice Methods for Arsenal from ArseneWenger.com

Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger is known for his calmness, resolve and focused attention to his team. Many believe that these are three aspects that help the manager and his team achieve the success that they have enjoyed together in the last fourteen years. The manager is known to respect his team members and treat all players equally. He is looked upon as philosopher and guide by his players. They have whole-heartedly accepted his managerial style and philosophies.

Wenger has adopted a number of unorthodox techniques and strategies over the years to help his team succeed. Most of them are related to the team’s training and practice sessions. A few of these strategies that help Wenger and his team focus on a game at hand are:

Warm ups and strength training

Wenger’s team starts with a well-timed and disciplined fitness and training routine. The manager makes his players play games like tennis to help them develop their concentration. These games are part of the team’s warm up routine. Wenger moves the team from warm ups to strength training. This training regimen comprises of two sessions of isometrics. One is performed before the commencement of a training session and another after it. Isometric exercises are divided into two: for light muscle groups and heavy muscle groups.

Wenger mandates that his team carry out 12 repetitions for light muscle groups and 20 for heavy muscle groups. He employs these exercises as they enhance his players’ performance, strength and mobility. The manager ensures that these exercises are performed in the weight room. Wenger uses these exercises even as part of injury rehabilitation. He requires that his older players use these exercises to ensure that their strength is retained even if their joint stability is affected.

Training session

Next, Wenger takes his players through a training session of 90 minutes. These sessions comprise of numerous training methods. These focus on improving a technical or tactical aspect that the players will use during a game. He also ensures that through these sessions, the team experiences different tactical situations. Wenger believes that a game’s efficiency is improved when his team’s coordination and technique are concentrated on maximizing efficiency.

Wenger generally introduces concepts and methods in the first half of the team’s training session. He believes that players absorb more information at that time as they are fresh. Wenger also ensures that he evaluates the method and its efficiency. If it suits the team and works in their favour, he retains it, if not then it is discarded.

The morning of a game

As the morning of a game is extremely important, Wenger ensures that he takes his team through the tactics they have to employ in the game. He spends nearly forty five minutes discussing the club Arsenal will be facing. During this discussion, Wenger and his team focus on the way key players from the other team play. They also look at players to watch out for. Wenger is also known to strategically encourage experienced players to lead games.

Half time

During half time, Wenger generally encourages his team to maintain a sense of calmness. This, he believes will help them relax and focus on the remaining half of the game. He also sometimes discusses the shots and tackles the team missed during the first half.

top manager managing players that arent making the most of what arsenal give them . what is needed tho is a fresh pair of eyes on the situation, id like ray wilkins to replace pat rice this summer. pats done a commendable job for this club but i think someone more intouch with the players and modern game like ray would do wonders for the team.

this is the man you want to sack i blame his staff maybe pat rice he hardly has an opinion i think wenger and the players would be better if they had an assistant manager that helps and gives advise on how to motivate the players at the end of the day arsene is only human and there is only so much he can remember and do his staff need to help him i hardly ever see pat doing anything all he does is shout. i was doubting arsene couple days ago but now i reckon he is the best man for the job and he does know that his team has weaknesses but he cant hardly say there shit can he u dump fu-ks it would kill the teams confidence if we dont win anything i reckon 70% this summer arsene will change something within the team and if he doesn’t ill be disappointed. Think about it tho every year we get stronger and stronger all we need is a few tweeks. players to go denilson, almunia, Rosicky and eboue squlacci. Thats it dont be dramatic and say diaby and bentdnar there young and have all the time to improve there physically gifted so back your players man be supporters not haters. Dont hate just appreciate.Every disadvantage has got it’s advantage.

Right now, there are many managers around Europe who could do a better job than Wenger. This team has all the skill, it just needs 2 things: motivation and organisation.
The reason Wenger was so successful when he first cam in, was that he was very different to Graham (and Rioch), that’s what this team now needs….a complete change in the style of management. They are too comfortable and afraid of winning. If we had a team (and manager) like this in ’89, we would never have had that amazing Friday night to celebrate.
Yet the ticket prices keep going up. Let’s just get this right, our ticket purchases are ensuring people like Denilson never have to work again!
