Adam Kemp – Arsenal are so close but yet so far away (as usual!)
Is silverware more important than idealism? – by Adam Kemp
Arsenal have not won a trophy since they took the FA Cup in 2005 and their last League title was way back in 2004. They faced the humiliation of an 8-2 spanking in Manchester and an exit from the Champions League to an impotent Milan side. Arsenal strung some decent performances together in the second half of the season and clinched a Champions League place on the final day of a rollercoater year, barely finishing above Spurs! What can Wenger do to transform the team into trophy winners and title contenders from relentless under-achievers?
You have fans that are still loyal to the cause and others like me whose patience has run out. Arsene Wenger without doubt has moulded the Gunners into one of the finest clubs in world football. He has developed some of the greatest footballing teams of the modern era and remained nearly competitive whilst moving to the Emirates. I completely empathise with the Arsenal fans that react angrily when I criticise his recent history, however, if you were to judge him since 2005 then his status would be less reputable.
Arsenal has been built on strong ethical beliefs that the club should be self-sustainable and no rich benefactor is allowed to pump money into the club. Now season after season fans have been asking for investment into players that can improve the squad. We understand that the board do not want Usmanov to put millions into the club as it disagrees with the principles that are deeply imbedded within. Although Arsenal continues to make healthy pre-tax profits year after year they do not reinvest the proceeds efficiently. Arsenal is the only club with a global fan base that makes a profit from player transfers. Arsenal has the capacity to make £40Million transfer losses year in year out and will be break even with all other liabilities.
Now no one is saying please go and spend ludicrous sums of money on overinflated players but we need certain players in key areas to make us challengers to our rivals. For a club that appears to be so reserved in the transfer market we have no problem rewarding average players with large contracts. The wage structure within this club is so idiotic that the idealism of parity has no place at a top club. The likes of key players like Van Persie are on c. £70,000 a week where fringe players like Almunia earn c. £55,000 per week. This parity structure prevents top players earning what they can earn elsewhere and players with little ability earning far more. Arsenal has the third largest wage bill in the Premier League and this has to be restructured to make us more attractive to top players and realistic to squad players.
We had the creative hub of our midfield poached away from us last summer and in a frenzy Wenger bought in inadequate replacements. Arteta has been consistent but he and the other signings are not going to help us win trophies. Arsenal has several players registered in the first team that have been allowed to underperform and remain overpaid. It infuriates me that we have to pay the highest ticket prices to watch some of these players attempt to play the Arsenal way. The way Arsenal is run would suggest that we will not lift silverware anytime soon unless there are some drastic changes. The squad needs a major revamp and we need at least four top class players to come in over the summer.
Van Persie cannot be asked to do it all on his own again next season pending his likely transfer to City not happening! Arsenal has already clinched the ‘replacement’ signature of Lukas Podolski in the hope that he can be a leading scorer next season. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a series of summer transfers that will put Arsenal back into contention for the title rather than just battling for a top four place. There is a creative void in midfield still where Fabregas and Nasri used to boss things. Wilshere will need some time to recreate his fine form and the signing of M’Vila would certainly be welcome. The defence needs to be toughened up by Steve Bould and hopefully we can sign another one of two players in this area.
However, we need to try and sell the overpaid deadwood players that are surplus to requirements here at Arsenal. Simply we tried to offload them last season and no club could appear to afford their wage demands. Whoever gave them contracts needs to find another job as clearly valuing a players contribution is not one of his strengths. I am willing to give Wenger one more season to see whether his values can turn into silverware. I have been very anti Wenger over the years but the issues are far more complex than just the managers overall performance. I still think he has a lot of work to do to convince me that he can take this once great club back to the level it used to be. If he doesn’t use the resource’s available to significantly strengthen the club this summer then I am pretty sure it won’t take long before I am screaming for his resignation.
The current ethos of the club is killing any chance that we have to celebrate silverware as fans. Would you have Usmanov on the board or do you still believe in Wenger and the Kroenke’s vision?

so everybody is saying we should ship out the deadwood first before any major signings which is wrong cos selling deadwoods might take till august,we need to act fast from now not wait till after euros cos most deadwoods aren’t going to euros
we need an extra versatile defender cos we know our injury records. Also with M’vila and 2 other quality players(4 ins,7 out)and Convince Rvp to stay then at least we would win a trophy next season

What is different this transfer window to any other over the last few years? We have our star player leaving, and he will be replaced with a player that is not as good. We won’t buy anyone else till he is sold. Seriously – this is like groundhog day. Why will we have a better season? When we had our chance 2 years ago to win the carling cup, we missed the opportunity. I know I sound ‘glass half empty’, but I’ll say it again – what has changed to make this next season any different?

I find us loosing points many times because of trying to walk the ball into the net. with so many chances high up the pitch, the only person who tries long range shots and actually succeeds at that is Arteta. I think Wenger should also invest in another player who can pounce on a loose ball e.g from a corner or free kick and smash it. wrer it not for Arteta for instance, the mancity game would have been pints lost. don’t say I said it but Ox also seems like he has shooting boots

There something about this article which has “I know it all” written. 1stly in the past season if you want properely analyse things, We lost our seasons due to injuries. We got knocked out off European Championship due to bad refering “BARCELONA 2010/11″.
So please KEMP the mere fact that we competing on all four competitions until JAN shows we just lacked squad depth and no so much quality players.
Yes we all want star names but at Arsenal those are made, Im looking forward in our new signings to take to another level lifting a trophy or 2 in the process.
I am sick of tired of Kemp and his neagtivity.

You make it sounds so easy! It’s amazing! If only life is ever that easy, the world finical status wouldn’t be as bad would it?
Most of the so call “dead wood” have shown glimpses of their potential although quite a few of them just couldn’t live up to and remain that quality.
The club sign these players hoping they would come good, they weren’t signed just to make up the numbers. Quite a few of them don’t work out, but who would know? Signing big names have no guarantee either!
If only we can see the future! Right?

As wenger has already stated the need to sell before buying, it’s not hard to work out who he means! ( deadwood) the catch with this is because of his public announcement Clubs who could be interested will hold out until the last minute for a cheaper price on any players head with this more than likely leaving us yet again no time in the window to finalise our deals.
I believe a player such as m’vila and maybe 1 unheard of of young potential is all we will add as things stand unless we lose some deadwood fast.
I’m all for usmanov & dein, as already stated we don’t need to paying ridiculous wages,
Just sensible wages justified by performance.

A very true post!
Unfortunately I can’t see us lifting a trophy with the squad we have, to many chances have been given to second rate players. Our pay structure is a mess and most of our creative players get sold, I feel this will be Wengers last season if no trophy is lifted.
Come on Arsenal spend on creative players and not in developing a youth squad!
Show your fans our intention of winning!!!!!!!

Fellow Gooners you can agree or disagree with the writer of this piece, but unfortunately he hits the nail squarely on the head.
I disagree with the author about Arsene Wenger however, as he has clearly been working with one hand tied behind his back since the Emirates was built and financed.
I was somewhat disappointed that he stopped short of naming Gazidis as the problem, after all he seems to do the contract and transfer negotiations etc..
We haven’t been the same since Hillwood and co stabbed David Dein in the back, coincidence ? I don’t think so !!!!
As to Fitzy – unfortunately we can’t deal with it as you so bluntly put it, because we have no control over the situation and have no way to do so… To solve a problem you need to understand the nature of the problem, hence this article was insightful.
We can all come on this site and discuss buying MVilla or keeping RVP, but while sometimes fun, they are pipe dreams. I would love to win the euro millions tonight, I know how I would spend it, but I also understand its not going to happen… But with the Arsenal we are blinded by hope and faith, which will eneviatably lead to us becoming frustrated once the transfer window shuts and we have bought an 18 year old and two 11 year olds with potential…
I love my club and it hurts to see it run in such away, which already sees me losing hope for next season. There is no way that the board will allow RVP to run down his contract and leave for free next year…. They will take the 15 million or so from his sale and then a similar amount for Walcott, before trying to convince us that the Ox is the answer ….. They tried this with Ramsey when Cesc left us…. And we all saw the car crash that has now blighted poor Aaron this season…
We over achieved this season, but that was in part to the teams around us falling apart in the league…. Albeit both Liverpool and Chelski fans got to watch their sides in two finals and pick up some silver ware…
I have lost the one thing a Gooner should ever lose … Hope ..
So Fitzy tell me how to deal with that mate !!!!

A Few questions on transfers:
1)Surely Arsenal needs to sell the players in their squad so new signings can take their place?
2)If no one wanted the dros last season and they haven’t done anything in the season to prove their worth, surely it’s status quo on their transfers? Only Euro’s can change team’s perspectives on them, if they play.
3)Then, I’m sure Wenger wants to recover some of the transfer fee spent on them so that might be a problem too.
Last one,
4)Did Wenger make the 20 mil profit he needs per season or will Arsenal need to sell RVP & Walcott to cover the season just passed?

we need usmanov not to turn arsenal into another city or chelski but to keep hold of our key players with their wage demands wenger creates stars he never has brought one usmanov will be more involved & he will also bring back david dein who i believe would work better with wenger like in the past whuch means we won’t be making cheap last minute signings if this arsenal doesn’t win anything i can see a mssive protest building among angry fans

Who do you think? Who else but monsieur Arsene Wenger (he’s Lord to many and God to some).
Wenger has a Master degree in Economics. I want to know which University he earned the Economics degree from. I want to know what grass he smoked when he re-signed Diaby with a salary raise, but then he did it again just recently with Djourou.

Kemp: This is the first post that actually made me to believe that you still love our Great Football Club. Even in a typical business world, you need to invest before you start to reap. Arsenal Fc should buy out the contracts of all the fringe players and invest in quality players again. With that in place, success will come our way both in trophies and finances. We already had the best financial Management in EPL the only thing lacking is to take the risk to flush out the deadwoods, re arrange the wage structure to accommodate top talents and have the mentality of keeping our top talent. Gunners for ever.

Personally I hope Diaby stays fit for a season. Diaby is the best player in the French team by far. He can do everything pass, shoot, defend. And when fit he is an automatic starter for France, he can displace anyone in that midfield including m,villa and hazard. I agree with Wenger, 1 more season and we will see. Even the 26 mins he played at Liverpool probably won us that game as much as RVP’s goals.

Just want to add @ kemp, I find it hard to believe we have the third highest wage bill in league,
Is that factual?
That would mean man utd is cheaper than ours as I can’t see it being city or chelski and if that’s the case then something is seriously wrong amongst the hierarchy within our club As utd of late have still won things with their players being on a lower wage.

superb article once again from adam kemp. Many fans were outraged at kemp when he started to analyse the problems and state publicly what he felt as a true arsenal fan. However the guy has been proved right and judging by the responses he seems to have finally convinced many that he isnt a spud and like all of us he loves the gunners and just wants us to at least challenge for a trophy.
I think he has been too lenient on wenger, as wenger is part of the “system” here.

Ok…..Chelsea, Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid and now Man City win things because they spend the most. Is football success as easy as that? Chelsea, Man Utd and Barcelona have success now over a number of years because they have a hub or world class players that define the way they play. They have kept this hub because they can pay what is required to keep them and discourage suitors. It cost Real Madrid 80 million to get Ronaldo away from Man Utd. Man City are building toward that as are Real Madrid. Arsenal despite Wengers best efforts to build around Fabregas have failed to keep that world class hub. We have two potential world class players in Diaby and Wilshire who have both been injured the whole year. If they both played at their top potential would we be able to resist a 40 million bid for either? Doubt it. It takes world class mature experienced players to win things in the modern game. We have experience in the squad now.. we need one or two world class to join and retain or best players for a couple of years to win things. Podolski is a start..if RVP is allowed to leave realistic ambition to win things within the club does not exist.

Nice Post very much how i feel. I think one thing thats always posted is “what if the money men leave” Arsenal fans have harped on for years about it but i dont see Abramovich ever leaving (is it 8 years now), why would he when Chelsea are winning things, same for the city billionaires. As you have said there is money for transfers and none of us are asking for crazy money just the ability to spend £25 million on a player which is perfectly reasonable for any of the top 6-7 clubs. Usmanov could pump say £50 million in and if he sells his shares he can get it when he leaves, im sure a new investor would cover it just to get a stake in the club its all very viable without us becoming Portsmouth. The fair play thing will be a joke everyone around us has £100-200 million pound teams already and buy the time it hits it wont change things other than we might have a bit more to spend but buy then the good players will want to go to the winning teams not us.

Adam, I think you’re factual wrong on Arteta being an average player. He had a huge influence and if we had achieved the same points average in the games he didn’t play as those he did, we would have about 13 points more (9 games, 2.2 vs .8 from the top of my head)!
I disagree with you regarding silverware; CL and PL are the only two trophies worth anything. I’d rather play CL football than winning either or both the domestic cups.
Regarding changes to our squad: 10 years ago, we had several world class players in our team with the rest being top PL quality. Now, I believe we have 2 world class players (van Persie and Sagna) with ~6 top class PL quality (Szczesny, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Wilshere, Song, Arteta). Walcott, Mertesacker, Gervinho; jury is still out. Diaby, when fit, is a great player, Rosicky and Arshavin are among the most talented in the PL but both are likely slipping. I’m not convinced with Gibbs, Santos, Ramsey. AOC is still raw and may come good. Podolski – let’s wait and see.
Off load Squilacci, Chamakh, Bendtner, Denilson, Vela. I haven’t seen enough of Park playing for Arsenal, I.e. no verdict, Wellington; either sell or get him back. If we sell the 5 listed above +Almunia already gone, that should enable us to increase the wages for our best players as well as fund 2 top quality finished products. We have enough young talent in the club, we need ready-made improvements.

i am actually in favour of this ‘self-sustaining model’ because i think it can really help us in the long term and will not let us face a financial crisis, like liverpool faced and they were almost going bust. but the way the transfer policy is run in this club is what i don’t like because we have not acted fast enough to get the players we want and then allowed their prices to rise and then they got snatched away from us by other clubs. i don’t think we should spend massive amounts of money on players because they could turn out to be a flop (like chelsea spent 50m on torres or liverpool spending 35m on Carrol) or the player could turnout to be injury prone and so the money will be wasted. so we need to spend reasonable amounts of cash on players who are quality and make us challenge for tittles again, also players who can make football a joy to watch but important of all we should act fast to get them before their prices rise. we neglected this last season and look what happened, we lost some of our long term targets because we let it too late (mata), also in January we lost Cahill to chelsea even though we were in a better place than them, they were utter rubbish then but cahill moved to them because we let it too late and he only cost 8m, if he had come to us, our defence would have been rock solid. and now we have lost Marko marin to chelsea and kagawa to man u both of who were relatively cheap and quality. but what i fear of losing is marvin martin, giroud and m’villa, they relatively cheap so we need to act fast before they get snatched away from us. this policy may not sound very exciting but it will help us to win trophies and become the great club like we were.
there is an expression where it says: “behind every darkness there is light” so u gunner just be patient, we are in darkness (trophy drought) but our time will come!

also i don’t agree to what u said about Wenger because he’s not responsible for getting the players’ signatures and wages the real culprit is Ivan Gazidis. Wenger is fantastic, one of the best in the world and definitely best in league because the way we started the season i didn’t think we had a chance of finishing in the top ten but some how he got us into 3rd with players who would be reserves in other top teams. after all, let’s not forget it was Wenger who made us ‘invincible’, it was Wenger who introduced this style of play and made us one of the biggest teams in the world and we won trophy after trohphy until david dein left. so if u want to blame someone blame the board.

JW87…
Your comments come across some what naive my friend …. I have no doubt that you love the club as much as I do … But please think through your comments before you commit to paper…
firstly we have never been in the race to win the PL this year and the year before you claim we were in the race until January and that we only missed out because of injuries or poor refs….
So that tells us that our squad isn’t strong enough and that we aren’t good enough when we reach the later stages of competitions and start to meet the stronger teams….
Yet this season we were getting beaten by the likes of Swansea and QPR …..
Our performance against Milan was woeful and please don’t forget the humiliation at Old Trafford…
Please take your head out of the sand and realise we are in trouble and it will not get better until we compete financially…. A fellow Gooner refers on here to the financial fair play regulations …. He is correct they will not be enforced because teams like Real Madrid and Barca will fall foul of them … Plus city have already found a way round it by renaming the ground ….
So JW87 recognise the issue at hand or continue to be dissapointed … KEMP is right and your efforts to sugar coat our failures are incorrect…. In fact I am just checking your IP address as I have a suspicion your are Gazidis or one of his family in disguise !!

Kemp I can see how painful you feel for the terrible drought of our beloved team. You are really gooner…and I wonder what this so called Kroenke all about with the fate of our team? Always, it the fans who feel pains when the team is performing poor, but they just enjoy their life. However, they’ve to reach a time that, a team is nothing without strong and loyal supporters. So please, he shouldn’t carry on making us furry….he and the BOARD should let Usmanov’s £s give us happiness. We (representing other fans) are tired of being just the watcher/observer of the likes Chelsea, Mancity, Man United winning trophies, and us remain fighting for TOP FOUR…very frustraiting!!…imagine, we lost CARLING CUP to the relegated BIRMINGHAM, what do they really want us to do then!?…shit!! so give freedom to USMANOV so that RVP stays and help to win trophies…period!!!

I still hate you but for once it wasnt such an anti-wenger article which I applaud you for
As for the question at the end, I would like Usmanov with Wenger in charge, simple.
If you continue to write more articles in this fashion im sure mine and a lot of others opinions of you will change, looking at every article youve ever write this is by far the most positive

lets b realistic, stan or usamov is nt d prob,d prob is board, gazidis n wenger;if a club doesnt favor aq good coach lk mourinho,he walk away, even satisfying him bt disturbing him too much he resigned,bt nt wenger’s case instead he groan evry season, leving fans n supporter nationwide with faithkeepin mentality, for gud 7season,arsenal is on trophy drought n u re tellin rvp nt 2 take his leave, why beggin rvp, instead lets face d fact n tell d board 2 do d rite tinz n see maybe gud players will nt come 2 emirate.make d club a trophy contender nt a pretender, buy good n establish players n see maybe rvp will nt sign,he desire 2 sign bt without d board doing d rite tin i support him 2 leave 4 silverwares, chelsea bagged champ n all players like2 play 4 them, non regular plyers at man city(dzeko, adam johnson,d jong)collects wages more than arsenal regular n top players(shameful),adam johnson lookin 4 playin time y nt arsenal sign him, good n establish players re everywhere but is arsenal read 2spend instead wenger discover other club make d signin(eden hazard, peter cech, micheal essien among others)so both london fans n supporters, stan should wake up n do sometin b4 arsenal ends up like leads utd, liverpool among others

.Its time the board wake up and see that this self sustaining model is not getting the club anywhere and it has been the reason why we have been trophyless for so long .Simple solution is to get rid of Gazidis and Kronke, let Usmanov take over the club so we can start spending some money so that we can start winning again.

To say that Arteta was inadequate is plain out wrong. DEAD WRONG. How many games did Arsenal win without him in the side this year? He scored some good goals and although he didn’t provide as many as some people would have liked he was very impressive. He controlled the midfield. The guy has one of the best passing records in all of Europe. Pull your head out of your a** Kemp.

We were literally begging Usamanov to give us money in January-February, now it’s against our ethics?

To put it in the words of another Frenchman so maybe AW understands: Le mental, la force mental. Like Aime Jacquet used to say.
We LACK an Adams, Titi, Lehman. We do have some strong minds, but we usually vanish when thing get rough.
AW is good. I do not want him to be replaced with someone worse. But if, if….
On the other hand, whoever wants to leave because there is no trophies should see if Nasri with his trophy was in the first 11 men of the Man City team. I myself prefer to be the “head of the mouse” instead of the “tail of the lion”

People speak as if they are authorities in everything. Instead of giving constructive criticisms and resonable and practicable advice, they would resort to name calling and abuses. What is there in Man City as to compare it to Arsenal? Is it one league cup in 42 years after spending about £1b? Is that an archivement even when they were digraced out of champion league at group stages and also out of the lowly europa league? How many trophies did Chelsea win before the coming of Abramovic and have they won more than Arsenal in their history except the odd one out champion league? And these came out after close to £1b investment and a turnover of 8 managers. Man City had also made a turover of 3 managers within 5 years. Those of you clamouring for Usmanov, is this what you want to turn Arsenal into where we hire and fire coaches and engage mercenaries and people without home traning as players. How many people who made their money legitimately could squander billions on football? If the money was debited into the clubs account, could they repay in 50 years no matter how many cups they win? The allusion to Leads United, Liverpool and Portsmouth does not hold water because those clubs went down because of poor planning, bad investment and lack of planning for the future. The self surtaining model of Arsenal is the best, the club is stable, the future is planned for, the infrastructures are the best and it is not debt ridden so we do not need sugar daddies with stolen money. Let us encourage profitability with certain modifications. To review wage structures to accomodate 2-3 super stars around whom the team would be built, to start rebuilding this season by the addition of another good striker, a creative midfielder, a good defender and a good goalkeeper. Let Van Persie go if he wants, his constant injuries was part of our problems. Last season was the one spent on the pitch and if he is reasonable he would sign new contract possibly at 150,000 and push for rebuilding. Do we even know if he would not co back from Euro with injury or spend the greater oe next season on treatment table? Walcott can go if he likes as he had failed to fulfill his potentials. If they both go then we would need two good strikers to complement Podolski, Gervinho as well as Ryo, Joe Campbell and possibly Park. All injured players like Sagna and Wilshere should be kept fit. If Diaby cannot be injury free he should be released on mutual consent. Every possible thing should be done to send away Charmach, Squillachi, Vela, Denilson, Bendtner and if possible Djorou. Fans should stop abusing Wenger and the board but encourage them to make the few changes neccessary. Fan must also stop booing their players.

In management, there’s leadership and followership. When the team fails, it is the leadership and followership that have failed. Why do we put all the blames on Wenger? His powers of management is limited to the guiding policies of the club and obviously he is doing his best given these limitations.. What do we do? RESTRUCTION. We have to restruction to allow for winning policies to come into play in the face of the dynamism of the game of football and the business instinct that orchestrate it. Let’s borrow a leap from the so call winning teams and fashion out our own unique methodology for winning
