Adam Kemp: Arsenal’s board are as much to blame as Wenger for lack of success

Posted on July 01, 2011 by admin

The Arsenal board’s lack of business conduct and ethics has cost us sporting success. by Adam Kemp

After last season’s shocking demise, I launched a tirade of confounded frustration in the direction of Arsene Wenger. I am still appalled at how the manager has conducted this transfer window allowing key players to be subject to speculation, amidst a sea of phantom arrivals apparently imminent. While Wenger remains an obvious scapegoat for our sporting failures, I will have to point out that the board is as equally to blame for our shortcomings.

Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith along with Alisher Usmanov has all recently been critical of the board’s business conduct, which has proven substance behind their cynicism. This Arsenal board are more concerned about their short-term capital preservation as to take a pro-active approach to create a truly great footballing side. The Arsenal board use their behind-the-scenes shrewd security to protect themselves against being found out. For years Arsenal has used the excuses of the shift from Highbury to the Emirates as main principle behind the lack of investment in the transfer market. This stadium on match day has seen a massive increase in turnover from gate receipts along with consumer spending on food and drink.

Arsenal actually grosses the highest amount of match day revenue than any other Premier League side which is reflected in the over inflated ticket prices across all levels of membership. They used the excuse of charging the amount they did to help fund the transition period to this great arena. Well what about the large property portfolio they command that included the Highbury Square Development? What about the consistent profit made during transfer periods on player trading? What about all the other club membership fees and Arsenal online subscriptions? Arsenal could have stayed debt free without gate receipts during the trophy less period if they wanted. The profit margin between the clubs income and expenditure during our baron spell is a slap in the face all us fans that pay these ticket prices.

Although the board do not directly receive dividends from their share portfolio, they have the interest of capital growth and preservation. So in laymen terms if Arsenal makes great profits whilst still playing in the Champions League, the shareholders capital and value of their assets will increase in the short term. The long term effect of sporting failure where the team will dissipate due to better players seeking clubs that harbour more ambition will have a significant financial impact eventually. If Arsenal slips out of the Champions League, then the revenue along with commercial merchandising will fall; resulting in the fall of shares prices and demise of profits in the long run. Arsenal’s sponsorship deals are due for renewal soon and if they fail to lift silverware they will not maximise their potential. This presents an ethical dilemma to the business conduct of Arsenal and its arrogant directors.

Arsenal preach about having the right values about how club should be run, however they are hypocritical as they fail to adhere to their statutory objectives that relates to sporting success. Any business should be held to being open, honest, responsive and accountable of their actions. They should be committed to acting competently, responsibly and reliably; relating to internal stakeholders and the fans fairly with respect. The board of directors have failed miserably in adhering to the corporate values associated with how a successful club should be run. They rake in record profits whilst not investing into the acquisition of top quality players to compete in the pursuit of silverware. Our ticket prices should be used to delegate a proportion of transfer dealings where the quality of player added would improve our footballing chances of success.

The fact of the matter is this club is absolutely more than capable of investing £50million on a player if they so desired. They just choose not too as they feel that the risk of the players potential failure mitigates their principles of doing it cheaply. Arsenal have well over £130million sitting in cash reserves accumulating interests for the greedy directors investment purposes. They are still increasing their property portfolio whilst improving its overseas commercial revenue in other financial markets. There is a need more than ever to improve this squad; however it looks like another summer of false promises of a war chest to be eclipsed by losing three top class players. The quality of Fabregas and Nasri is so rare, that it would be almost impossible to replace without spending big. Something the board and Wenger are reluctant to do as they will no doubt promote more reserve players to the first team.

Overall there is a dilemma where the fans either condemn or praise the board for its regulatory principles. I will not praise a board for not delivering football success at the expense of large profits generated for their capital growth. A truly great club has to invest some or all of their profits into the footballing side of the business for long term success and stability. Arsenal is happy to sit around the big boys and win the occasional bout for pride. Arsenal is simply a great footballing side who are not maximising their potential; considering the financial resources they have available at their disposal. It made me laugh when they claimed that they were the only club side to beat both Manchester United and Barcelona last season; how many other teams actually played them both last season? I think only Valencia was the comparable statistic. It is comfort food for the weak and uneducated that gullible fans will take this rubbish season after season.

If this summer bares its usual frustrations then we can be assured of a seventh successive season without a trophy. I am sure you will all hear that injuries, age, financial restrictions and hypocritical Wenger ramblings will, are the reason for another season of demise. Your comments are welcome; only if you have an objective viewpoint this time to express a valid view. Not just “Go support Spurs.” I think Peter Hill Wood might actually be using our profits to help Spurs find their transfer kitty, to sabotage our great club!

Unfortunately I agree I can’t see anyone wanting to come to arsenal with the big players leaving and all that will happen is ya denilsons and diabys will get more games in the view to raise their transfer values next year. I also heard this morning Walcott has two years left on his contract and is stalling. Can ya shine any light on that or will we be here again next year with the next crop?

Nobody is asking the board to spend millions every sundays…but their total lack of signing is strange when all the world know what we need…where is the profit we are making every year is going? Something is strange…wenger is good by showing us attractive football but intervening in everything makes him loose the main part of his job…the pitch….he worry to much about everything…why our players every year want to leave or leaving? It because we don t have a team to bring success and we think we are so good…nastri and fab want to leave because the board and wenger let them down…sign the right players and they will stay….

I am not usually a big fan of your posts, but I have to admit that this article is well written and has provided food for thought. I have always been a huge Arsene supporter, but thinking it through, I feel that over the long term he has been out manoeuverd and put into a position of weak compliance by the board. Simply – no one tells Alex Ferguson what to do. This supposedly well thought out 10 year plan of youth development, whilst laudable, is not being backed up by a will of steel to win. We have slipped off the top table of clubs that the best players want to join. That is a disgraceful state of affairs and a dangerous dissipation of our priceless brand. My friends and I are not renewewing our season ticket this year and a friend of mine who just had his spot on the list come up is not so keen to pay either, which may be a financial issue, but he is certainly not willing to beg borrow or steal to witness first hand a possibley terminally weakened and demoralised group.

The damage has already been done. You protect your core squad and let them develop and grow into maturity – like Bergkamp, Adams, Keown, Winterbottom, Parlour. You don’t let the players dictate when and where they will perform. Alex F has only lost one round in the battle with his squad and that was to keep Rooney, which in the end he did.
This lack of certainty over our 2 most talented players is appalling. Those responsible must be held to account.Management is to blame, and that includes Arsene – after all he is “The Boss” – or is he?
I am reminded of a business quote -
“If you spend too much on something all you risk is losing some money. If you spend too little, you risk losing everything”

From Nigeria: My concern and fear as a true gunner is Arsenal FC’s glory fading away under a losed board and one-way man as the manager. At there noses, lots are wrong, yet, they see themselves the most wise. Who is fooling who? Wenger today, board tomorrow! We fans are but becoming worried & wearied. Honestly,it becomes more difficult to remain a gunner! Lot to complain about, but, just fed up! May be the dissolve of the board & Arsene Wenger exit will bring back Arsenal FC lost glory! I am confused & frustrated

  7. Goofygum says:

Wenger is the last man we should blame. We all know he was always close to David Dein but when he left Wenger didn’t mew. Similarly Wenger will never criticise any individual player or the board. In fact Wenger is the perfect gentleman who shuts up gets on with the job and protects his players no matter what and we know some players are petulant. I cannot even begin to imagine how Wenger must feel when players he nurtured for so many years like nasri, fab, clichy are on bring of departure. This season more than any I have seen wengers face in pain like never before. A man that I have been following and watching since monoco. I’m a fan of arsenal only so long as Wenger is at the helm as are thousands of others around the globe. The day Wenger leaves arsenal are finished! I don’t always agree with wengers dispositions in games but not for a second would I ever boo Wenger. He is a professor I would follow into the darkest cave if u had to and I hate caves. If anyone is to blame than the finger points at the board. For all the adam kemps couch potato know it alls the day Wenger leaves arsenal is finished never to qualify for champions league again. No player is bigger than the club but this club is not bigger than the gaffer. The board are greedy pigs and have made a lot of money on the sweat of Wenger. But every time I or millions of Wenger fans hear Wenger boos I feel like sticking two up the arsenal. I also dont want any english players who cannot and will not ever win anything. English players including rooney, gerrard, lamps etc are not world class. It shows in every england game but nontheless i support england but i am under no ilusions. Now Adam I know you are successful at whatever is is you do, maybe you manage a workforce worth millions and bring growth year year in and year out but if you again say anything about Wenger then I can you need your head checked and your family should rush you to emergency,

I think Goofygum is right. I am sorry but to think that a club is judged by it’s spending each summer is not sustainable. We, gunners, pride ourselves in our distaste of the chelseas and Manchester city but what good is it if we only aspire to that money pinching concept. Life is about developing a true unit. The truth is that we were doing well until OUR players decided to collapse. Everybody mentions Wenger and the board but no one says nothing about the incredible drop of form and lack of ambition we showed in the last episode of the season.

    I think that is amazing.

Adam kemp the sore loser! Did you deposit the 130mil for the arsenal? So clichy has signed for man shitty, fab for barca and Nasri for man IOU? Did u do those deals for them to move that makes you so sure they’ll move? Maybe arsenal could use ur help in signing players quickly,if it is that easy and I hope you re not insinuating wenger pays what he is told for a player. Nina and Usmanov failed in their quest for power then decides to turn on the board and you come here talking about virtues. If Usmanov takes over, you think he’ll pump in money just for the sake of winning trophies? That he won’t keep the profits for himself even if it needs to be re-invested? Do you know him(Usmanov) that much as to vouch for him? To me it seems you re the most gullible of these lot who cry blue murder when things don’t go the way they want it.

@Goofygum. There was a time when the board called and question Wenger pertaining to trophy less season. Wenger was saying this “as if i have murdered someone” and called for patient because his young players would develop only then we can expect trophy. Well, season after season fans’ love spurned. What I suspect is that, the board are now too convinced that Arsene equal to Arsenal.

In my opinion we shouldn’t point all the blaming fingers to wenger he only helped the club by applying his economics skills during the payment of the stadium loan but the board has taken advantage of the project youth by making more money each year and boasting of unrealistic transfer kitty. The board should please change their attitude cos this club has got so many fans all over the world especially in Nigeria and Africa even a fan committed suicide cos of the failure of this club and yet the so called board are not doing anything visible yet to avoid issues like this.I Think if nothing is done fans will begin to switch allegiance just like the way the players switch clubs.

Mr kemp whilst it is refreshing to read for once that Arsene Wenger is not entirely to blame for the lack of trophies for the past six seasons, are you now a financial wizz kid?
I am definitely not so it is easy to be cricitical of the board when not having the facts in front of you. To buy a so called big name is I am sure you are aware a costly affair firstly the fee then his wages and subsequently other senior squad players wanting parity with there salary!
If I am not mistaken fabregas was a youth team player Nasri was a player with potential we can go on and on, it is Wenger that spots these talents and nutures in to the worldclass players they are. Proven superstars don’t neccessarily payoff Veron, dzenko, cole (Liverpool) torres, the board will back Wenger to do what he feels best, if he meets with a so called superstar agent and gets the feeling it’s not right shouldn’t he act on it, how many times have you not acted on gut instinct and later regretted it!!

I have to say your article makes for a good read. Wenger seems to be stuck in s timewarp, preferring to continue with a football philosophy that whilst admirable bears no fruits. A supposed master in his trade who cannot see what all us fans can. We don’t ask for mega signings that will jeopardise the clubs futures, just signings that will improve areas within the team that will allow us to get over the finish line in front of our competition. I won’t name the positions or the overpaid dross that need to be found new homes but the time has come for Arsenal FC and Wenger to respect the fans and the history of the club by attempting to make the club a success again in the pitch. If Wenger and co are waiting for FIFA fair play to level the playing field then they are truly leaving in cuckoo land. Arsenal is more than a balance sheet and somewhere along the line those that are supposed to run our fine club gave forgotten that it is their duty to ensure Arsenal have the required players to compete and WIN at the highest level.

I have to be honest that for me the time has come to move Wenger on and the board. If the option is to remain with the current status quo, I become more drawn to Usmanovs approach of spending to win. If you can’t beat them join them or we will fall so far behind it will take a decade + to get back.

It seems Nani’s comment was right “Arsenal is great training school”! I personally fade up being looser every year. Arsenal is a football club not money making company. Our success can be only measure by “winning trophies” not financial figure. Barca, MU might be in debt but in football history and players mind they have their deserved place. We are loosing that respect very fast. I don’t blame players when they change club for silverware or better pay. Anyway after their career they need to manage their own need. Its just us poor supporter can’t change our heart so easily. Arsene we believe on you but please understand our basic needs which is just bloody trophy !

Shame on those of you who have turned against Arsene Wenger. Our most successful manager EVER! The board are clearly to blame; I remember reading a year or two ago members of the board saying if Mr Wenger wants a player we will buy him, money is no object. Really, OK if that’s true why didn’t we buy Shwarzer, Cahill, Arteta, Hazard, etc when Mr Wenger highlighted these players? The reason is because they are full of shit and money is clearly an object for them when it comes to buying players and retaining their best players. The saying money talks and bullshit walks is so true; therefore the best way to protest is to hit them in the pocket. Sadly, I will not renewing my season ticket. Good luck Mr Wenger you really do need it. I can’t imagine anyone else doing that job so well. And please bring back Mr David Dein.

Project Fabregas and the pretty boy football has failed to win trophies. Last year was the worst for attitude once the Carling Cup final was lost that I can remember. The writing was on the wall re attitude even in last years pre season..remember the Legia Warsaw game… down 3-0 up 4-3 then 6-4 it could have been 6-6 at the end. It happened again many times throughout the season.

  33. Professor Wenger says:

I couldn’t agree more with ‘Goofygum’. Also ‘David’ is spot on. Let’s not forget that last season, we lead the league until around January. We have also done the same in recent years. Now I know that’s not good enough, but that’s also tells you we have a very good team here. Look how hard all these other teams are trying just to get to our level, and they can not. Therefore Wenger should be credited for that. In sports winning can never be guaranteed. As long as you are competing to win, then thats what you can ask for.
Also before we go craz about our players leaving, remember that nothing has happened yet. The media have nothing better to do than write this stuff, so lets at least wait and see what happens. I really don’t get alot of this fuss, when I feel like we have a great squad and a great manager. Our competition i feel has alot more serious issues than us, yet the media love to talk about arsenal negatively. I think its because Wenger is an easy target really as he does not use the media to his own advantage as other managers do.
Arsenal fans, lets first wait and see what happens. We don;t know yet who will leave or stay. Plus whoever leaves, i assure you will be adequately replaced.
Believe me, we are lucky and fortunate to have Wenger, and we should not forget that.

Its very true. Wenger and the Board are after their selfish interests. As far as fans are concern, unless we use the strongest of the means we have, the hypothetical Board and their Wenger will always play on our brains. For example,If he says that its not worthwhile buying a player at 50m pouds, then what logic does it have to price Ces Ferbregas? at that price ?. Is he living in a dream land of obscurantism ie where he kmows the falsehoood but tries to sugarcoat it with the truth.

Wenger,s reply to one of the Arsenal fans is a clear testimony that he has learnt nothing and forgotten nothing.

Dear FANs the way things are, lets plan the BOYCOT of Arsenal mathes till Wenger and his Board listen.

What is very clear, a rebellion against the bad tendencies has started. Believe me it will not stop unless the grievances of the fans are met.

  36. E-MAN says:

Finally people are beggining to see the board of what it is.

The problem is having a bunch of old Etonians and english aristocrats such as Lord Peckham, Peter Hill-wood in charge of running the club, as they historically are the sharehlders that i would propose have cared the least about the club.

David dein and Danny Fizzman, as i understand it, were the visionaries of that board and following Deins departure and Fizzmans absence through his battle with illness Hill-wood and co were able to seize control and make far reaching decisions about the club which have nothing to do with football, but rather to do with increasing their share value – so that they could eventually have a pay-day when the opt out (hill-wood has been selling to kreonke, as an example).

The have also cleverly built-in two fall guys in Gazidis and Wenger that will take the blame of failure, Gazidis on the business side and Wenger on the sporting side.

The board has totally removed themselves from the public realm and have left a great man like Wenger out to dry, season after season – a strategy which is now even obvious since Gazidis claimed that ‘wenger is ultimately accountable to the fans’. The board is basically throwing Wenger to the mob, which is the most heartbreaking part of this sad episode.

The reason we arsenal fans are so disappointed is simply because we have a geneous manager, who year after year, despite having his resources cut delivers us within touching distance to the summit. Transfer window after transfer window Wenger identifies players (christiano ronaldo when he was playing in portugal, drogba from marseille and more recently schwartzer, samba, cahill) yet the board stall over releasing funds and the opportunity passes. Further to this the board every year does little to re-negotiate top players salaries and they end up getting unsettled by bigger clubs and eventually leaving (flamini, adebayor, toure, gallas, nasri ? clichy ?).

Despite what we are lead to believe its not Arsene in the negotiating room with his bankcard refusing to pay for players. Its the board who are co-signatures and control the money.

Wenger has unfortunately through lack of real support and backup in the board room become a pawn and ultimately the fall guy for this corrupt board.

The so called success or flirt with success. If that deserves to be called success, that enables the team to play in the CL after selling the so called important players or failure will never make the team invest even 100 trophless years.

My has always been that let this team end up out of any europe competetion, only then will there be real soul searching.

Then all Arsenal supporters shall stop buying those tickets, and show the board how strong the fans can be when they are willing for one goal! Tell every arsenal supporter not to buy that Emirates cup shitty ticket and let them taste it.

Bang on. The Arsenal board hold the fans in total contempt so it’s about time we started reciprocating. They are a bunch of short sighted, unambitious, self serving, contemptuous, greedy bastards. The lack of investment in the team over the last 5 years is a disgrace. There is no excuse for it, the money they say was there and it’s not like we were winning anything. Meanwhile our best players want to leave and prices keep going up but as long as the profits are good and the share price is high they couldn’t a monkey’s. I wish they’d all resign and let Usmanov take over. At least he wants to invest in the club not just bleed it dry!

    @ Professor Wenger:
Good point bro.. definitely wenger has done a great job and is our best manager in history.. but six years of no trophies is not acceptable for a club of arsenal’s stature.. I do not know if these rumours are true about fabregas, nasri, and clichy leaving (although I rather clichy leaves lol) but its bad news for any club when their best players are openly asking to move to other teams

we needed 4 to 5 players on top of what we had last year , if we sell nasri , fabregas and clichy, that means we need 8 first team players if we are to improve , this dos,nt take in to account the other teams around us improving.. i really hate to say this but i can see the arsenal really falling down the table ,wenger will have his name with the arsenal ruined ..we ‘ll not win anything for years to come ..hope i’am wrong

Now Stan is in charge. Can he please do what the Romans and the Sheiks are doing. Wenger has taken enough flak for Christ’s sake. Sometimes I wonder why he can’t just walk away for taking enough. I would, honestly.

I do not expect much from an Arsenal who cannot keep his stars, and therefore lacks of experience. New and young players all the time, and every year they are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Fabregas can be 24, but he has been with us 8 years. That’s experience that counts more than signing a 31 year old.

The board, with Kroenke as the leader, will never hear us. This club has left us behind, they have forgotten us fans as the true builders of this name Arsenal. We shout “Arsenal!” and make others hear “Arsenal” and start loving this club. Every time you open that website, you’ll see so many of that poundsterling logos. I’m sad because i’m always asking in my mind “do I have to pay for all these expensive bloodsucking subscribtion to make me a true Gooner? I have this tattoo on my back and not yet called a true Gooner?” Why? Because seeing those stuff make me feel like they love money more than my true support, my true love for Arsenal, the only club that can always cancel or delay my date with a girl, the club that make me watch football much more than studying for a final exam, the club that become the reason why i came late for school, the only club that make me turn on the TV to watch them playing at the time my aunt was being buried to her final stop.
I’m just a financially poor Gooner, live Indonesia, with much much lower economic standards. maybe I can’t afford to pay for those videos or Red Member, but trust me this heart is only for Arsenal. I don’t know if the board hear me or not, I dont care though, you all are not Gooners, but you have torn so many hearts apart for turning this lovable club into a kingdom of greed.

Adam Kemp….what proof do you have for any of the information in this article? Arsenal sitting on 130 Million, capable of spending 50 million on a single player if needed? That’s simply ridiculous. Where do you get this information?
Here’s a report from a WELL REPUTED financial football blogger about the transfer funds available to Arsenal. Arsenal are not “sitting” on 130 million. They have about 50 million to spend in total. Wenger wouldn’t spend 50 million on a single player and with reason.

    @Ramy
Here’s information regarding Arsenal’s cash reserve.

    - Kroenke will have access to Arsenal’s unrestricted cash reserve, which is approaching £100m. Another £40m cannot be touched due to restrictions under Arsenal’s banking agreements (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/apr/11/stan-kroenke-arsenal-takeover)

Arsenal is the third richest club in the world after ManU and Real (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbes%27_list_of_the_most_valuable_football_clubs).
All top clubs have debts, not just Arsenal. So don’t use debts as excuses. What sets Arsenal apart is we have a money-grabbing board.

@ Adam Kemp – one of your best articles that I have read… well documented & speaks of the pains & pangs that we Raesnal Fans go through with the stupid & naive attitude of Arsenal Board &to some extent our nutty professor….

@ Phil – admire your perspective.

@ David, Goofygum – have you been born lickers ?? How much would you lick AW ? Pls note this club’s name is Arsenal. Arsene is a paid Manager who has to perform his duties & answerable to fans like you & me.. pls stop licking so hard that you stop salivating beyond a point… save something for ylur better half & not on Wenger
