Agent – Arsenal are close to agreement for Koscielny
Even though Arsene Wenger is in South Africa for the World Cup, it seems that there is still work being done behind the scenes to secure his main targets, of which the first one is the Lorient centre-back Laurent Koscielny.
Just like with Thomas Vermaelen last summer, it looks like Arsenal are driving a hard bargain, but it looks like they are just about to get their man.
Koscielny’s agent, Stephane Canard, yesterday told L’Equipe: “Laurent has told the Lorient President and coach that he wants to join Arsenal.
“It is hard to ignore interest from Arsene Wenger. Lorient’s directors want to get more than €10m from Arsenal.
“We have held talks with them, and with a sell-on clause inserted in the deal we are not far off agreement.”
Considering that Koscielny only cost Lorient 1.5m euros last summer, they should certainly be happy with the profit they are making on the deal, and Koscielny will get his wish to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world!

This guy is a very imposing CB. Kinda a perfect match for Verm because hes bigger and is a very no nonsence. I still feel we need 1 more CB to make it 4 in the first team. If i was wenger id send kyle Bartley on a 3 month loan and bring him back after the 3 months if one of those 4 get injured and offer an extension to the loan if all 4 are fit still. Im a big believer in that young lad.

I Know, we should at least get one more CB with the thougts that 3 are leaving…
But don’t forget that Song can play CB if needed!

The club is greedy.yes, they may be losing their great asset but asking for that price is quite puzzling. Frm €1.8 to €10m is way too far. Is it bcoz Arsenal who placed the bid? I guess so. Nonetheless, any CB will do for me. 3 veteran players are nearing the exit door so we need back up plan. Hopefully, it will go through. Up next will be GK, im done seeing flapianski in our squad

this guy is an unknown, at 24 years old and only recently started playing in top flight football. However, just like Vermaelen, an unknown may just turn out to be a GEM. At only 1.86m, he may not be the tallest defender, but if he has a jump that is as powerful as vermaelen, then we would have no doubt gotten ourselves a great defender. Hopefully wenger is right on this one, and I welcome this player to arsenal with arms wide open.
And yes, I agree we need to have at least 4 center defenders. TV, Koscielny, Djourou and one more experience one, slightly older. It is a pity that Sol campbell was not retained. It would have solve all our defensive problems if campbell was retained to provide cover and also his experience to DJ, TV and Kos. Gallas and Silvestre are definitely leaving Arsenal this summer as we all already knew, but I still find it a pity that Sol wasnt retained.
In addition, we have Bartley and Nordveit, the two up and coming center defenders, that are getting promoted to the first team. I reckon that they would be staying with arsenal and getting games in the carling cup and maybe even the FA cup. However, if a loan deals that is interesting enough comes along, then they would definitely be loan out for 6 months or a season. Another player that can play in center defend, is none other than our beloved alex song. Song is an important figure in midfield, however, in times of need, song can definitely be deployed as an emergency center back, for he plays in that role for his country. Rumours that the dutch guy Van der wiel is interested in joining arsenal is definitely good news to the ears. This guy is amazing, when he played for holland in the WC. I would love to see him come and fight it out with Sagna for the RB role. Sagna can hence move inwards and play as a CB, for he has done that before, and this would solve our CB problem.
Having said all this, our team is still currently short of one defensive midfielder. Song alone is not enough especially when injury hits him. Denilson is definitely not a capable replacement and diaby is not a defensive midfielder. Rumours of yaya toure joining a team in the EPL soon are getting louder and I hope that the team would be arsenal. However, I reckon that barcelona would only trade yaya with fabregas. Given that we do not want to sell cesc, yaya would most probably be heading to chelsea or city, the megabucks.
From my own point of view, I think that if cesc wants to leave, then we have no choice but let him leave. His heart is no longer here and it would be detrimental to the team as well. Let him leave and arsenal get a hefty sum of transfer fees and yaya toure as well. Its killing two birds with one stone. Getting a defensive player and getting money for transfer.
Cesc’s role in the arsenal team can easily be replaced by Arshavin, rosicky and also Cole (if the rumours that he had already signed a pre-agreement to join Arsenal after the WC is true). Nasri can play there as well, and lets not forget Wilshere (whom blossoms playing in this role at bolton, and also the outright heir to the Fabregas role, Aaron Ramsey, whom will be back by September. With Chamakh’s arrival and RvP back from injury, we would have no problems with getting goals. Bendtner is getting his first world cup and that would no doubt further boost his already sky high self confidence, and this would do him good next season. Theo walcott, the unlucky lion to be axed from the england WC team, and he must be feeling damn sore about this. He would no doubt be eager to recapture his very best and show Capello, that he made a mistake by not taking him to the WC 2010 (providing england does not win the WC 2010).
Therefore, our stirke force is pretty much there. All we need is just some reinforcement to the backline, the Defensive midfield and probably even the GK department (Joe hart would be a good addition).
Thus, sell Cesc and get Toure + $$$$. Sell Eduardo and Denilson. Sell Traore and release all the others whom contracts are expired.

I have a sneaky feeling that JET will be a back-up defensive mid next season.

Hmmm…Koscielny or whatever, well good transfer if he’ll partner TV without problems & 1 more CB & Defensive Midfield signing to boost the squad. Gunner 4 Ever!

Well, with my family coming from next to Lorient, I can tell you that it is a small city, and with a 1.8m arrival fee at Lorient, this is comparable to a 10m fee in London. Lorient is also a feeder team to Marseille with priority status. So if Arsenal offered 5m Marseille had the right to offer the same…
So could we see a Vermaelen+Vertonghen main with Koscielny in rotation?
Would do nice on the pitch.

@ Ivory, I think Koscielny will become either first choice or backup to Djourou. (Wenger probably isn’t sure yet as the compition will probably bring the best out of both players) I think that Vertonghen is the most important signing for us. He is direct cover for Vermaelen AND Song. In fact I believe he is a better defensive mid which is saying something. These two signings plus a keeper and Van der Wiel will be my EXACT summer wish list come true. My list was:
Vertonghen
Center right back
Van der Wiel
Keeper.
(Also I hope that Wenger approaches Hazard and tells him not to sign a new contract and then signs him next year or even Jan transfer window)

i THINK 10M IS TOO MUCH, and that’s just how i feel, now if we do buy him for the reported some, there should be no sell on clause, that’s just greed from Lorient for a player who is yet to light up any league, if he is highly potential, Arsenal will bring that out of him, not Lorient, due respect, but fact. Now i think 6m is good enough with maybe another 4m due if performances are beyond satisfactory. Anyone remember Senderos? yes, we had high hopes in him.

I’m from Lorient, working in Ireland, supporting the Gunners in Premiership. Hate Liverpool!
Koscielny arrived this year from french 2nd div to Lorient and had the hell of a first season in L1! All the followers were surprised, he was already scouted by Valencia, Roma and Inter in November last year. Lyon even tried to tied him-up with a 5M€ deal in the last hours of the transfer window in January.
He’s not that big but really powerful and fast for a CB, with an excellent jumping, amazing how he catch the ball on the top of the head of guys who are 10-15cms taller than him. He plays CB right and always defend standing, his pace allow him to always be on the forward’s back. He has a great vision as well, an area of improvement for him will be the long pass as sometimes it’s a bit messy.
Laurent Blanc the next France coach, said a lot of good things about him and it’s no secret that he’ll be called anytime soon in the french squad.
From a Lorient’s fan point of view I’d prefer to keep him as we’ll miss our rock in defense and his value will rise this year with the first caps but from a gunner point of view I think it’s a great signing which will perfectly complete TV. I understand U’re concerns but don’t be cuz U’ll have the same kind of good surprise as last year!
Au revoir
