An Analysis Of Why Wenger SHOULD NOT have taken off The Ox

Posted on January 23, 2012 by admin

The Oxlade/Arshavin substitution IMO was based on logic and not emotion/sentiment/psychology; it was based on ideal conditions and not real world conditions. IMO Arsene is very theoretical/logical in his decision making.

Oxlade was one of Arsenal best players on the day but it was his debut. Wing play is extremely hard work at the top level and Oxlade had put in a terrific shift. So it was a LOGICAL decision to freshen up play with another winger. He could have replaced Walcott instead but Oxlade is still developing physically, making his first Arsenal league start. Arsene also mentioned that Oxlade had been ill. (However he played Oxlade for 87 mins in the Carling Cup).

Arsene tends to replace a winger at the same point in most games, around the 70 minute mark irrespective of game or score as long as substitutes haven’t been used. This is his game plan and it’s based on what he has studied in the game. But IMO, it was the WRONG decision for all the reasons that make Arsene the manager he is. It was a decision that didn’t take in the emotions/sentiments/psychology of this game.

Reason 1 – The Crowd
Arsenal had just got back in the game. Oxlade was doing immense damage. He set up the equaliser. The crowd were sensing a turnaround, the substitution didn’t take into the crowd sentiments. Arshavin has been getting hammered by the crowd over the last few months, rightly or wrongly. Taking off the new fans favourite who was having a great game for the fans current pariah, was not going to be taken well.

Reason 2 – The Arsenal Team
RVP made his sentiments known even if you really shouldn’t do that as a player, it was RVP’s emotional reaction, questioning the substitution. It would have been a decision, you suspect, that the majority of the team would have reacted negatively too. So it would have taken the edge of the Arsenal team spirit.

Reason 3 – The Man United Team
It would have given Man U a boost, their players would have seen that the player that was roasting their right side all game long, Oxlade, was being taken off. Giving Man Utd a psychological advantage.

Reason 4 – Arshavin
As I’ve said the guy has been getting battered by the Arsenal fans for a long time. There are misgivings about his attitude, contribution etc. His confidence appears to be down. I don’t believe that the player is deliberately not wanting to play well. Let’s just say he’s going through a really bad patch. It was wrong to put a player in a situation where he is expected to effect a huge game, when he is such poor form. Why put Arshavin in that position. How must Arshavin have felt with the crowd reception? That alone must have taken something from his performance. It would have been best to give Arshavin 5 minutes at the end of the game with a view to the Villa game in the FA cup. What reception is Arshavin going to have the next time he plays especially when it was from his side that the 2nd goal came.

But Reasons Aside – We have to remember that Arsene has been very successful playing football to a philosophy, making decisions based on logical/theorectical reasoning and not sentiment for his whole career. If Arsenal wins more often than not then you have to trust the managers judgement. What has made it bad for Arsenal this year is the change to playing personnel. Last season Arsenal were in pole position for the League, Carling cup final, home victory against Barcelona in the champions league. And this is after all the bad sentiment at the end of the ’09, ’10 seasons, where those seasons fizzled out. ’11 season was another year of hopes being dashed. Arsenal’s best season since ’08, where the league was just missed out on.

We need to look at the positives and the challenges facing Arsenal. Champions league every year, not spending the earth because you have to spend a lot of money to bid for top players where you will get hits and misses. Arsenal do not have the budget to spend big on 10 players and only have 3 hits. Man City, Man Utd; Spurs to an extent and Liverpool currently have spent the money but it doesn’t always equal success.

I agree here. Especially the last few paragraphs! It’s time for some realism and down to earth thinking not delusional part time fans who expect more than is reasonable. The correlation between Arsenals decrease in trophies and the increase in the amount of money thrown into football is clear to see.

If Wenger leaves we are destined to follow the lead of Chelsea and other clubs that chop and change manager every season, and where has that got them they have spent millions and are still only a few points ahead of us, I honestly think with the injury problems we have had to still be in with a chance of top 4 is amazing!. If a new manager came I’m the financial situation would go downhill. Most fans these days seem to be so changeable, one minute ox is just another youngster, the next he is your favourite player…

I am losing my patience with some of wengers decisions, but I really think we would be more miserable if he went. Name one top 4 club in the last few years who has changed a manager and instantly reaped the rewards. Liverpool have a new manager spend over 100 million and are still below us!

Looking forward to the bolton game with the real fans and not just the fairweather business men at the emirates!

  4. Nick says:

Well stated. There are a number of reasons that I’m sure Wenger had, however misguided they were, for taking the Ox off but we all saw the tragic conclusion to that. You can’t approach every game as an “I’m gonna sub someone off in the 70th minute, like for like”. You have to take into account the score, the situation with the current players on the pitch in terms of who’s being effective and who’s not, etc.

If I’m a Man U. player who’s been getting run ragged by the Ox and I see he’s going off and AA is coming on, I’m gonna thank my lucky stars and all of a sudden have a confidence boost injected into me. Everyone knows AA has been rubbish for longer than this current season. He is NOT a threat or a game changer as much as Wenger wants to believe this. Theo was ineffective all game, terrible crosses in (IMO, that’s why Yenaris was brought on in place of JD, other than he’s shite!). IMO, taking Theo off would have given him a kick in the pants that he needs, because right now he doesn’t think he’s in danger of losing his spot to anything other than injury.

MY applauds to Yenaris, Koscielny, RVP, Szczesny and OX. BFG wasn’t too bad and made a great goal line save. TV5 I thought should’ve done better and not allowed Valencias goal. JD, Ramsey, Song, AA, Theo were rubbish.

Park was anonymous given the stupid over the middle play we attempted and I felt bad he wasn’t given more time.

Wenger lost through his own thinkering. We dont have solid midfield. It shame to see Gigg the almost 40 year of age can out wit Ramsey with the ball.Rosicky to soft with the ball mostly ball watching when without the ball. Out field player like Walcot should do his job more especially defensively. Kudos to Oxlade the 17 year old he did more defensive work and supporting attack more than Walcott the whole game. The Kid know what to do in modern football. Djouru is finished he lost position and not a good Rightback.

During the off season Spurs spent very little, they loaned in Adebayour which was a master stroke.

The key difference is, Spurs did not sell 3 top quality players. Arsenal lost Nasri, Fabregas, Clichy. This would be like Tottenham selling: Bale, van der Vaart and Walker. Imagine where they would be in the league if they did.

We MUST keep hold of our key players to be successful, and add appropriate players in specific areas of the club.

He has been a rock and still think, withquality purchases, he can be a legend manager.

I don’t think that the substitution had any bearing on the Result of this game. Our defenders were all over the place.
The first Goal was down to Djuoro not closing players down he just can’t defend. But every one jumped on Arshavin were was the left back. Then again Arshavin look’s as if he want’s
to be some place else.Does Mr Wenger talk to his players or does he ignore them like he does with the Fan’s.

    Wenger quoted on Arsenal.com:

“He had started to fatigue,” Wenger said. “He had started to stretch his calf. He was sick on Sunday night. Arshavin is captain of the Russia national team. You have to justify substituting an 18-year-old kid who’s playing his second or third game? Let’s be serious. I have to stand up to the result and for the substitutions I made. I’ve been 30 years in this job and made 50,000 substitutions and I have to justify every time I make a decision? I do not have to explain to you every decision I make.”

Good article, I agree as most do about the substitution but the manager has substituted well for us many times before. Everyone makes mistakes and we blame them right away. When they do right no ones says anything! I’m glad to read a balanced view. It’s refreshing!

The only logical explanation Wenger could be playing Arshavin is he is good in Champioship Manager 2012. Wenger must be playing this on the PC before preparing/selecting his team and then actually selecting the team on the pitch based on that. No one including the players have any other explanation.

I just read OX’s interview and he did NOT mention even once that he was ill during the week! From the interview, it seems that he was happy with his performance and could have gone on till the end!!

It was positive for me and mentally it puts you in a good position. ..
It was a nice performance from me and I’ve got to make sure I keep my place now.”

    To S.H

Are you really that gullible to believe AW’s lies? If he was really sick and recovering, Arshavin the CAPTAIN of the Russian National Team as so eloquently put by AW, should have started!!! Not an unfit 18 year old OX!!!

Did you see the medical team attending to him when he came off!? NO!!! He just went to his sit and watched the rest of the game from the bench!!

It would be nice of AW to admit that he f**ked up instead of his usual arrogant and stubborn response!!!!

Well said! Wenger has always assured top 4 in his entire tenure as Arsenal manager. The man has made Arsenal what it is today yet fans quickly forget. They all wanted Arshavin and he hasn’t reached expectations. Now the same fans that urged Wenger to buy him are pressing the manager to sell him. Oh how fickle fans are and only true colours shine through times of adversity and hardship. It’s good to see you still remain positive and realistic to the cause.

Wenger quoted, “If you expect me to blame an individual player, it will not happen. We win and lose together. If I’ve made a mistake, I’m sorry. It could have happened if he had stayed on.”

Doesn’t this tell you that Wenger is apologising for his mistake because he understands it may have been a mistake? On the contrary Wenger is also realistic for stating that “it could have happened if he stayed on”, which in football it does. It’s always easier to look at things in hindsight. Why don’t we blame Vermaelen who should’ve been there to help out at left back? Why? Because he is a consistent player. I’m not blaming VErmaelen or anyone for that matter. We all know that Arshavin is not great at defending but neither is the Ox as Wenger stated AOC needed to work on his defensive game (posted on arsenal.com). We got caught by Valencia who’s an excellent winger and this could have happened to anyone.

1 – football is emotional! Everything about it! Crowds cheer and get behind a team because of emotion! If that weren’t so – pls explain Henry coming on for the FA cup??? ALL EMOTION!!! To say that a manager should only use logic/theory to succeed is a load of rubbish. Much success can be attributed to emotion in football. Think about how emotion can change a match – be it the crowd gets on side, a player scores, an player is unfairly hurt by the other team. Etc.

2 – why would ANYONE take a player (in this case, possibly the ONLY player) who is creating any sort of momentum for your team!!??

3 – to say that spending does not = success is totally foolish. Bad spending doesn’t = success. Money well spent does. FACT!!!

4 – why sub a player (in a critical moment) who is out of form? Its counter productive to do so. If they are out of form, what makes you think they are about to come into form??? Its a TOTALL gamble, and a stupid action to take.

5 – why can’t Wenger just admit he made a bad call. That is exactly what he did. Otherwise what he’s saying is 60,000 ppl + his own team captain are all stupid. Its was plain to see by all. Ox should have stayed on. Unfortunately, this is now one of many bad calls our manager has made recently. Maybe our manager is out of form, and its time to find one who is in form to move Arsenal forward again.

It’s not only just about the substitution of OX that fans are annoyed with but also the inadept tactics, lack of ambitions, excuses, failure to sign quality players to replace the ones that leave us (as well as the inability to sell players who just do not cut it anymore). Why did we sign Park?? The poor guy has to do his military service in 1½ years and is also the CAPTAIN of South Korea and he has yet to see much action.

To me AW has lost the plot but of course if you still support him, please by all means. Trust me on this though, if the problems had been sorted out PROPERLY early on in the summer and not at the last minute, things would have been much better for Arsenal at present.

Man united have normal players that can be compared to arsenal IMO,but the difference is they have “Team spirit” & fight till the end(something arsenal doesn’t have when the going gets tough)..The only reason I can’t blame their recent failures is the full backs injury which have affected their performance recently & I’m sure u’ll agree with me on that..

I have little faith in some of the first team players and can list many who arent worthy of an Arsenal shirt. The club have been showing little ambition for the last few years and Wengers ignorance to not address some of our serious issues is embarrassing, after all we are always told there is plenty of cash to spend. Newcastle sign Ba, Cabaye, Santon Arsenal sign Park, Rat boy and Mertesacker. Do we have any scouts overseas anymore? or here for that matter? What are they paid to do? Why are we not trying to offload Arshavin, Chamakh, Rosicky, Djourou. My only guess is that there is NO MONEY to spend as a good manager would spend right? Yes Wenger put us where we are today but what, we arent allowed to want titles and trophies anymore? Tired of hearing ‘Arsene made us a club of this stature’ or ‘show respect, Wenger knows best’ blah blah blah. Lets just settle for struggling to fourth every year for last six (no chance this year) while paying the highest ticket prices in the league. if you are genuinely happy with 4th 5th then why bother even watching the united game? youre happy being second rate, you keep drumming it down are throats?!!!! or actually give a damn and say this club deserves more, i want to see more. Wenger do you seriously believe Almunia, Fabianski, Mannone, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Djourou, Squillaci, Mertesacker, Denilson, Diaby, Arteta, Ramsey, Benayoun, Rosicky, Arshavin, Walcott, Chamakh, Park, Bendtner and Vela are good enough for a club like Arsenal?

One of the richest clubs in the world, who play in one of the best stadiums in the world. A club that is supposed to be SERIOUSLY challenging for the Premier League AND the Champions League EVERY season.

The only players that i would keep in the first-team squad are: Szczesny, Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Santos, Frimpong, Song, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho and Van Persie.

So if we are to have a first-team squad of 25 players, we need to sell NINETEEN players and buy FOURTEEN players of the same quality or better than the ten players i would keep mentioned above.

You haven’t got a clue Wenger. You have lost the plot. That has now been proven without a shadow of doubt by the substitution of Oxlade-Chamberlain for Arshavin. What were you thinking?

You have taken the club as far as you can. Thanks for what you have done for the club in your first 7/8 years but now it’s time for somebody else with fresh new ideas to take over and take the club to the next level. So please do the decent thing and resign, if you really care about the club.

There’s NO EXCUSE for booing the manager, Arshavin or the team. I agree with you that things should have been wrapped up in the summer without the late signings, but Fabregas’ sale was the key deal which affected our position to buy quality in a short time. Barca killed us with their bargaining and testing of Arsenal’s resolve to sell Cesc, and it dragged way too long. It is Arsenal’s best interest to protect the club and they needed to secure major funds from the sale to ensure they could spend it. We sold Fab on the cheap and I’m dirty about that. We had to though, Arsenal needed to buy players as soon as he was sold.

Regardless of how we want to look at it whats done is done, but we have no right whatsoever to disgrace our club and team by booing them. PERIOD!

Its interesting to see all the fors and against but the reality is, AW made a big mistake. in no team sport would you remove a player who has the opposition on the backfoot unless injured or the team winning the game, none applied. We lost the momentum at a very crucial point; at equalising and pushing for a winner. WHAT A MOMENT OF MADNESS!! No point in crying over spilled milk. All true Gooners, considering the personnel weve got compared to the top four teams we’re doing very well, keep up the support our team requires it!!

  45. James Swaine says:

It looked like a bad move, and there may have been better options on the bench than Arshavin. But Chamberlain was signaling to the sideline for a substitution. It’s not worth risking another injury to leave a player on when he’s not fit to go a full 90 minutes.

Its time to sell Arshavin hes past his use by date, OX has to start everygame from now, he has the potential to be the most creative english footballer ever, he needs to be in Euro starting 11.
