Arsenal Transfer Scenarios: Possible situations and outcomes by Anders Marshall

As we all know, the transfer season has just begun with a bang with the likes of Liverpool and Man Utd splashing the cash early to get things rolling. It makes me sad as an Arsenal fan knowing Wenger would never make such bold moves on the first day. What I do know is that we are in a very sticky situation when it comes to players wanting to leave for various reasons, and if these players are allowed to leave, who would replace them. Here’s a look at some possible transfers away from the Armoury and new Gunners to be added to the team should some players depart;

Fabregas Leaves

This is a tough one, because it’s hard to find a player similar in ability to Cesc Fabregas, who is one of the best midfielders in the world in my humble opinion. The least likely but most appealing to Arsenal fans would be a cash plus player involving Andres Iniesta. Unlikely, I know, but this would seem a fair trade considering Barca have been herranging us for years now. One other option would be to simply increase Nasri’s wages to his desired price, and play Ramsey on the right and Wilshere on the left. This could be problematic though, as Nasri is inconsistent and lacks the vision of El Capitan. Wilshere and Ramsey also have a lot to learn before they will be close to on par with the spaniard. However, if Cesc goes, there is a higher probability Wenger will get a player like Alacantra or Ibrahim Affelay.

Nasri Leaves

Despite fans’ thoughts, I don’t think this would as devastating as it seems. It would give us more money to splash cash on great players like Eden Hazard, who is a young proven talent with even more potential at just 20 years of age. Fabregas could get a wage increase, some incentive to stay, and a permanent uncontested place as central attacking midfielder. His increase in wage coupled with the signing of high profile players could convince him to stay for at least a few more years, something every Arsenal fan would be happy with.

Arsene Wenger signs Eden Hazard/Gervinho/Willian

This could mean the end of the road for Andrei Arshavin, who I would be sad to see go personally, as he can change a game in seconds on his day. He has been shaky all season, despite having convincing statistics. Alas, if any of the aforementioned trio are signed, it probably will result in a massive cut in playing time for the diminuitive Russian, who was a blockbuster signing, and one of the best wingers around. On the bright side, we will have fresh talent to look forward to should any of these players pull on the red and white jersey, and for that I’m glad.

Wenger signs Falcao/Benzema/Unkown

Should a deal for a striker go through, then Robin van Persie will finally have a proper strike partner, something that he has never had the luxury of. Despite calls for Arsene to sign another Frenchman in Karim Benzema, I think Wenger should take the wild card and sign Falcao. His goalscoring record was superb last season, and I don’t see how he can’t improve upon an already stellar performance this year and last. He isn’t the tallest, or the quickets, but man can he find the back of the net with ease. What I like about him is his no holds barred attitude that shines through when you watch him play. He’s all over the place, and has great finishing ability with his feet and head. The Crazy Colombian would be a welcome addition to the Armoury in my opinion, because Falcao would bring something different to Arsenal’s game: An aggressive, cutting edge. Something that Arsenal currently lacks, and the fans know this all too well.

Unknown Youth

This has happened already. Hector Bellerin, Harper Toral and Carl Jenkinson have been signed. What does this mean for the first team? Right now, not very much. What does this mean for the fans? Not very much. These are the go to signings for Le Boss, and frankly, I don’t like it. How many promising youngsters can you have? Surely there’s a cut off point, right?

So far, it has been a typical transfer season for Arsenal under AW, but I am going to remain hopeful that Wenger can sign some real talent, not just a bargain basement teenager. Come on Wenger, make it or break it!

Interesting article, since alost anything can happen at this point, I might as well put out my personal wish list for the transfer period. RVP is world class when he is fit, but i think much of his injury woes has to do with the 4-3-3 formation. He is not the physical type, which is one of the requirements for playing as a lone forward. Imagine what he could do in a 4-4-2 playing with Eto’o, benzema, falcao, or any other world class striker next to him.
Also, despite the fabregas/ nasri rumours, I think they offer us the best combination in midfield, with jack and ramsey slotting in as subs. To win multiple competitions you need to have 2 teams that can slot in and out of each other.
Samba and vermaelan would be solid, with koscielny and djorou as subs.
He’s not the most experienced, but I like Sczezny in goal with fabianski backing him up. If no one wants Almunia hire him to be a ball boy lol.
We do NOT need an overhaul of players, we are one of the best teams in the world already and we just need some tweaks that bring in some steel and some more discipline.
High expectations for next season, GO GUNNERS!!

I’m liking the article, shame you didn’t feel inspired to include a defensive transfer section. I feel bad for poor old koscielny, he’s done so well this season as the only consistent (just gonna ignore the cup final) and compitent defender out of the 3 available(sorry miquel you’re not involved in this). But I suppose he will get plenty of games next season after we sign cahill/samba and they are designated their complimentary injury (it comes free with the kit)…

I don’t quite understand when Arsenal fans complain at Wenger for signing young players like Bellerin, Toral, & Jenkinson. Players like them are what enable Arsenal to not have to spend £20+ million pounds for one player in the future. Arsenal employ a self sustaining model, which means they don’t have rich owners giving them a blank cheque to sign players, so signing young players and developing them with our state of the art complex and coaches is our only way of competing with others. I hope Nasri and Fabregas stay though, and Samba, Hazard, and Falcao/Benzema join also..

  9. K says:

We have to sign every talented youngster we can get our hands on. Why? So that one day we can have a squad like Barcelona’s – with players akin to Xavi, Puyol, Pique, Busquets, Iniesta, Pedro and of course Messi – all straight from the youth team.

Every player is developed from a youth system of some sort and whilst signing developed players is awesome, every now and then players like Zidance, Messi and Ronaldo come along and explode onto the scene. We subsequently get to get priced out by the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona, Man City and Real Madrid. It’s the Abramovich Effect – where every player linked with a rich club suddenly triples in value. Why do you think English players are so expensive?

That’s why signing talented Brits from the lower leagues (Jenkinson, Ramsey, Walcott) talented global youngsters (Miyaichi, Bellerin, Toral) or developed yet raw players with potential (the case with Henry, Vieira, Ljungberg and Koscielny) and developing them ourselves is a very good way to go about our business.

The day will come when our youth side consistently develops players on par with those produced by Boca Juniors, Ajax and Barcelona. Wilshere was only the beginning.

I think the fans are very hard on Koscielny. This was his first season at Arsenal, first season in the EPL, and played a lot more than he or Wenger expected him to play. He will have learnt a lot from this past season I am sure. At times I thought his potential really showed, for example I thought he was great in the Barca game at the Emirates. He may not develop into a solid first team player, but he will certainly have a part to play on a rotation system or cover, and I think he will be up to it. He wasn’t bought as a finished article, and he is learning and will get better. Sometimes we need to be more understanding.

I enjoyed this article. The level of it is above most that are on this site. I agree with the Falcao signing, along with a move away from the 4-5-1 formation and switching between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2.

Gervhino, Falcao, Samba, Parker and Cahill in would give the fans a hell of a lot of confidence and satisfaction. 5 players out, 5 players in.

I would keep Clichy. I personally like him a lot. Looks like he’s off though.

It seems to me that a lot of people want to see a lot of players leave.being the likes of diaby, arshavin, rosicky and such but is this really necessary?? If we look at a team like united for example.this season they had argueably one of the worst sides they have had for a few seasons and they still managed to win the league, why?its because of their fringe players…players like park, fletcher, carrick who aren’t first team starts a lot of the time but when they are required they put in the effort.players like diaby and arshavin need to be worked with more and taught these roles.by all means, bring in new faces to boost the starting 11,but we also need those on the bench for when we do suffer injuries!! I know I can see an arsenal team with a solid bench taking a few trophies.our side has for a few seasons lacked a lot of depth and we need it.wenger needs to find the correct balance between new blood and experienced faces.we need to hold onto players such as fabregas, nasri and clichy.possibly bring in a new LB to compete with clichy for his spot but can gibbs really fill his role for and entire season should we not find a suitablke replacement??? I think idealy a 4-4-2 side next season with a few hard tough signings would boost our squad.sell denilson definetly and squilcacky but otherwise just try and create depth.we don’t need drastic changes just strengthen what we have.make the difference by bringing in players who know how to win.how to fight.and how to hold your chin up when you go behind.I will forever support arsenal so let’s all stand by wenger and have our last bit of faith in him.he has made our club extremely stable and for that we can thank him,but now its time to win trophies, not for the fans,or for the brand,or the club.but its time for the players to stand up and be counted for!!win it for themselves and teach themselves how to win!!!ARSENAL TILL I DIE!!!!

  24. waleed says:

RvP does not need a strike partner. He does much better without one, because he gets the freedom to roam. RvP plays best up top on his own as a “false 9.”
He has never done as well in a 4-4-2 as he has in a 4-5-1. The formation just fits him. And it fits Cesc too as well as Wilshere and Walcott and Arshavin.

Arshavin won’t go anywhere. We need him. Even if we sign Gervinho.

Hazard really isn’t that great. Gervinho is a better player. Hazard has the talent but he doesn’t have the right attitude. If he gets over his laziness he could be a great player but he wouldn’t be a signing I would trust to perform right away.

And someone said playing 4-5-1 has caused RvP’s injuries – that is just ridiculous, sorry.

4-4-2 is getting rather outdated. It is not an option anymore unless you don’t have any good midfielders (like United) and if you’re OK with getting outplayed and having an embarrassing record away from home.

Instant success is often followed by instant failure. City and Chelsea can both buy players that, on paper, will bring them silver but that`s not always the way it works out, is it?
You can buy a beautiful silver trophy for ten grand or you can earn one that`s worth under 500 quid. Fact is Arsenal need core players to build on and these core players cost a fair bit but that doesn`t mean we make a habit of splashing out ,we just need the building blocks so we can bring on the academy over a season or two.

  26. Gunner fan says:

Signing talented youth has built a solid foundation, but too many leave once they are established – if Cesc and Nasri leave, it will be like the gunners being a feeder club for the top teams. If they only purchase youth, they need to keep them until they are on the decline. Since that hasn’t happened enough, we now need to buy established talent.
Don’t think RVP needs a strike partner, but we absolutely need somoneone that can step in when he is out injured (which is a given every year).
And yes, still need a solid defender, and would also like to see one more holding midfielder to keep Song on his toes.

  27. Pissofffan says:

I have been a fan since 10 years back. Watching Arsenal unbeaten getting the premier league n giving fans champion league qualification everyyear. Six years without a trophy is totally unacceptable for a massive club like arsenal! No manager can survive this long without a trophy in a massive club this long. Arsene has done well in certain parts especially in the youth talent but i felt that it has become an obsession for him to continue doing this and not getting the right experienced players folking out occassional needed payout to the right players. For the past 2 years Arsenal came really close having good runs being no 1 or 2 in league midway. Everyone was cheering m in my mind I was thinking just you wait n see. Somehow something will hit them hard n finish 2nd or 3rd in the end. The fact this team lacks a true leader n inconsistency are the 2 failures in Arsenal. Over the years have arsenal spend enough to the right players its more spending on young talents for the future not instant impact. This is why we have gone 6 years emptyhanded. Whats a few million dollars more for the right players if they can really push up arsenal scoring a few more goals n conceding less. Rather then spending on lesser known players and saving a few bucks n again have to wait for the younger player to grow n gain more experience year after year. Common Arsene since you are a professor do the maths is it better paying a few more million dollars and getting your problems resolved 1 time for all n thus saving maybe tens of millions dollars in the next few years without needing to spend much again or just saving a few million hoping God damn hope he can do us the job. This should be the last year Arsene being the manager or being reassigned to director of youth development.

  28. Ray says:

How many times must I say that going only with one system (whether it is buying establish players only or develop youth players only) won’t work? Look at Barca, if such a squad still need to sign some talented and experience player like Sanchez, who are us to say we have a good enough squad? Then compare our youth system to Barca, the reason why we are signing Barca’s youth players tell us that young talent doesn’t exist ONLY in our accademy and we sign Barca’s youth because they have better youth than those in our accademy else why would we want to sign them? Those who said we have a good enough squad today are blind and arrogant!

The transfer windows is not open yet but our activities had been very quiet or slow.
So far I only receive lots of disappointment like:
    1. Blackburn want to block Samba from moving to Emirates Stadium.
    2. Bolton wants more for Garry Cahill and Wenger is over cautious with the club wallet. Bring back Dein! Wenger himself is not as daring and quick as Dein to close deal in the market.
    3. Falcao is following his ex-boss to Chelsea and we ain’t going to place a bid when our competitor is Chelsea or MC. But how about Cavani?
    4. We looks like signing Gervinho but I am not sure why we are signing him. We know Lille won’t want to lose Gervinho and Eden Hazard at the same time, but why we signing Gervinho first instead of Eden Hazard?
    5. DCM, sometimes we link to our ex-player, Diarra, sometimes with Parker and the latest one is a joke, Joey Barton. Why on earth we need such a bad boy? Can’t we sign Parker instead?
    6. That winger from Southamptom, coming? Not coming? How about Cornor Wickham?
    And many more…

I really hope we can close most of the deal we need in the beginning of July and hope we as fans won’t have to go through the frustrating period of everyday waiting for news for too long.

“It makes me sad as an Arsenal fan knowing Wenger would never make such bold moves on the first day.” The first day of the transfer window for international transfers is 1st July, English players are over-priced and Arsene was trying to get Phil Jones but he’s a Man U fan.
Barcelona giving us Iniesta is ridiculous. Players to be considered as relacements for Fabregas are Javier Pastore (44m price tag), Marek Hamsik or Wesley Sneijder. Eden Hazard is not for sale and doesn’t want to leave this season, maybe next season. Also Lille will not sell Gervinho and Hazard in the same year. Arshavin was our leader for assists last season, he would need to fight for his place but he’d still have a chance of staying in the team. A striker partner like Torres that Chelsea signed for Drogba who required a total transformation of the tactics they played and caused some very poor performances ? Sounds like a great idea.
So far ??? the window hasn’t opened yet need i remind you. As for the youngsters don’t be naiive, signing potential superstars for peanuts is excellent business. So overall grade of D-, could do a lot better.

@Pissoffan. Why does everyone blame the manager for not spending money ? It’s the philosophy of the club which the manager may or may not agree with but he has to go along with. If you’ve been a fan for 10 years no disrespect but you missed the transformation that Arsene achieved with this club and aren’t able to appreciate what good he has done since the dark days when there was no European football and very little entertainment on the pitch.

The way things are going, its fairly apparent that we wont buy say more than 1 or 2 players. If wenger and team have identified their targets on whom to buy, it should be done in the right earnest. We cannot have us fighting over some mere thousands if we want a particular player. the classic case here being Mark Schwarzer previously and now it feels dejavu with both Gervinho and Samba. If the club and the manager has identified as these 2 being the players they want, then we should get them at all cost. I just dont understand why there is always an excuse saying we wont pay over the odds for the player wherein you have identified him being the one to make this team go forward. Ask anyone they will not question the amount being paid to a player provided the player helps the team cause.

two teams needed – in the middle, JW and AR with Scott Parker behind Sami, Cesc and Song.
same at CB with TV and Sambaman ahed of Kosh and JDJ
up front is trickier. I say stay 4-4-3 with RVP between Gervinho and maybe an Alvarez (height) or Eto’o (experience) or Benzema (goals and scandal headlines)
so many possibilities (that could work or collapse) it hurts the brain!
my hope is: go for it. even if it is for one last time. try Nasri and Fab4 in the middle, keep AA and his mad, crazy Russian brilliance for short bursts.
add the needed height off the bench: maybe Alou Diarra if he’d play smaller minutes as supersub at DM and CB. and/or Lacino Traore who could be the wild-card, formation changer, freak show that Crouch never quite was, while at the same time willing to learn to do his thing at a higher club level.

It has taken me 3 years to convince my father (71) that youth does not work on its own. Many of the current squad are just not good enough to win major honours. I, personally do not concur with the idea the Arsenal players do not try but struggle due to their inability to defend. Youth recruitment is admirable and shouted often when a team is on decline but with aheavy heart I must question the coaching as these players seem to be standing still professionally.

i abseloutly agree with jel i dont understand why people complain about us we have the exact same problems as manu the only difference is they come off good and it puzzles everybody manu have youth players and when they bought rooney he wasnt exactly the zidane or the kaka but look what he has become they have players who we would have begged wenger to bin like anderson fletcher and berbatov but fergie backs them and they come of good we need to respect wengers decisions and if it was all about splashing cash then manu wouldnt be good contenders for the title u have to be able to see talent ur messi and ur kakas didnt start off at 100 million

    My preference base on hierarchy:

    New signing:
    1. Falcao
Pros : good pace, a direct player, goal poacher & good on the air
Cons: May be too expensive for AW. Competition wth Real & Chelsea with chances to reunite with old boss Boas.
    2. Hazard
Pros: playmaker, skillful, mesmerizing dribbler wth speed, good vision, descent set piece taker
Cons: Similar style wth Nasri, 25M price tag may be too expensive for AW, being linked with Barca.
    3. Gervinho:
Pros: Cheaper than the others, skillful, physically strong for EPL, mainly played as winger however I see that he has potential to become Arsenal’s Drogba if played as striker (just as Henry & V.Persie which were wingers)
    Cons: Inconsistent
    4. Benzema: same style as V.Persie
    5. Samba : Compliment Vermaellen

To transfer out (to fund the above player):
    1. Arshavin – lazy, wait for the ball, physically weak, low aerial ability, slow
    2. Denilson – rise of Willshere & Ramsey
    3. Rosicky – injury prone
