Anthony: The Arsenal rumours are just bloody speculation!
Don’t believe all the crap you read by Anthony Armstrong
As an Arsenal fan, this week has been a particularly depressing one. Fabregas is off to Barcelona in exchange for pocket money, Nasri is soon to be a Manc, van Persie is about to hand in a transfer request, Chelsea want Walcott and we are soon to be priced out of making a move for Cahill. Are these the reasons for my depression? No. Gullible Arsenal fans are.
The sports pages are in dire need of filling in the summer with very little in the way of actual news to print. The amount of sheer speculation in the media is staggering. The Nasri drama was in full swing a couple of days ago as within the space of an hour the story went from Man U offering £20m for the Frenchman, to Man City making a double swoop for Clichy+Nasri, to Man City having no interest at all. What changed in 60 minutes?
Man U were said to be interested weeks ago despite no bid being lodged and no reputable sources to verify their interest. There are conflicting stories regarding Man City and Nasri but again, no bid and no reputable source until todays Mancini quote of “not yet”. And Chelsea? Lazy speculation that has spread like wildfire.
Barcelona had a bid of £27m for Fabregas turned down and the media couldn’t wait to tell us all that the were to offer £35m within days. Days went by and the story changed to an actual bid of £35m being lodged. We haven’t heard anything from Arsenal this time. This could mean that Arsenal have accepted the bid and are waiting for it to be processed before announcing it or it could mean that it didn’t happen and the papers needed something to write about. I’m guessing the latter. Fact of the matter is, this Cesc saga is no different than last year. We have a valuation of Fabregas and Barcelona need to meet it or negoatiate within reason. If they don’t meet it, he won’t go.
According to a lot of Arsenal fans we are almost completely inactive in the transfer market because we have yet to make the signings we need. They also say we should deal more like Liverpool and Manchester United who scout a player, offer the right money and then sign him. That must mean Nasri isn’t a target for Man Uyd right? They are such Gods of the market that if it were true, they would already have their man! We don’t really know the processes involved in making transfers, let’s not pretend to. I’m guessing it is a lot more of a long and laborious task than Football Manager makes out!
We have been promised a busy summer and I trust that this is true. We need to be patient, reasonable and sceptical of the what the media tells us. I’m not saying that Fabregas and Nasri will definitely stay, I actually think Fabregas will leave and Nasri will remain a Gunner. I am just sick of the doom and gloom I am reading from Arsenal Blogs treating every back page of The Sun as fact.
Cheer up Gunners!

The reason arsenal fans are so gullible is cos all out top quality players do leave! Answer me this , who was the last world class player to retire at arsenal? And how long ago??

If you want trophy, you can always support Barcelona, no one force you to support Arsenal if it is too misery for you to do so. You support a club not just because of how many trophies in the cabinet, it is about the culture, the philosophy etc. So if you can’t understand this, that’s always other club out there who you think can win trophy, just put your support there.

Thank you for your sensible post. I hav to tell i was begining to get sick of all this xfer BS. Like i told a friend of mine who gets worked up by all this rumour- I told him, treat them as mere rumour without any iota of substance to it.
I believe in arsene, and i no darn well that he is a sensible person and he would do what is right for the club. The rumours are just sickening!

You are just about the only one that has made sense since all this started. I think patience is needed here but I would have been happier if some new faces are joining up with the team for start of training and team bonding.
Arsene on the other hand should never have asked us to expect a busy summer as all we have seen so far is inactivity upon inactivity and silence. What he might have said was may be, ”expect a busy autumn”.
I am actually sick of the man but prepared still to give him the benefit of the doubt as he makes good his promises as I am an Arsenal fan!

I fully agree with what you said. The media are bored, and they know Arsenal fans are gullible, so they hit two birds with one stone. I can see Cesc going but I can also see him staying. In the next 10 days or so, we should know what the final decision is, for both Cesc and Samir.
I find it highly unlikely Arsene would take them both to Asia if he plans to let them go. So if he takes them I believe they’ll stay, if not then they’re destined to leave, unfortunately.
I’ve stuck by Arsene through thick and thin, these last few years, however.. If they both go, and Arsene doesn’t bring in any sufficient replacements, except from a couple of 15 year olds, I will turn my back on him.
We can’t expect to compete for the league and champions league if we just let our best players go every year, without bringing in sufficient replacements. I trust Arsene won’t let this happen though, so I’m still 100% behind him.
@Tordoo..
Impatient little troll. Go and support Utd you muppet.

At last someone with a bit of sense. Everyone needs to look at the facts. The fact is Arsenal already have 26 players over the age of 21. This means as it stands the board will not ssanction any more purchases of players over 21 until some are sold or have agreed season long loan deals. United have only signed 3 players one is under 21 the other 2 are only possible because 6 players have left the club, 4 permanent and 2 on loan. The other spaces have been taken up by players becoming 21. So until they sell or arrange more loans they will not buy anymore either. This is why the transfer market is a little slow. The 25 man rule is really having an effect for the first time. Next year it will be even slower, we will have another 7 players joining the 25 man squad, so they has to be taken into consideration as well.

Wenger already said he intend to wait as long as until August to make transfers. Not many clubs will consider offers for their players when the campaign start, because to find a replacement in a short time is not easy. OMG, i just hope Wenger will not end his search in France again.

Talking about mass hysteria… Haven’t you noticed the rumours that were spread when the season was still on? We were going to sign Gervinho, Cahill and the lot even two months ago. Does it mean Wenger is embellishing club funds/wasting time/f***ing his job? Go look up rumours for other clubs and then come back and tell me everyone’s already done their transfer work. I bet you there’s ongoing work in the area, outside of the past few weeks WHEN ALL PLAYERS WENT ON VACATION. Would you like to talk work under the palm trees? Or in a hothouse? Don’t you just love being stalked by uniformed men? If ManU managed to sign three players already, it’s partly due to the amount of money they were willing to put into the transactions. Neither of the players involved merited this, but apparently Sir Alex was so bent on getting them to Old Traf that he didn’t care. Do you think Wenger is just as set on the players the papers talk about all the time? I think he has more than one backup option for each spot he’s considering. Of course you can assume he’s an idiot who doesn’t know his trade, but then how come he’s done so well over the past 15 years?
Regards.

Has Fabregas, Clichy, Nasri and Van Persie ever said they want to leave Arsenal?. The media are creating a lucrative business by tapping into fans irrational fears with all this rumur mongering. Sky sports seem to be worse as they are now taking odds on who will leave and to where. Clichy and Nasri have one year on their contracts. Their agents are fuelling speculation just as all other top player agents do at contract renewal time. It was only last year VP stated he was perfectly happy to stay at Arsenal and win things. Whats changed? this morning there is speculation Walcott is unhappy and at loggerheads with Wenger. Theres an old saying in journalism “never let the facts spoil a good story” Agents know the ownership changes at Arsenal and are testing the
financial waters. All will be revealed in the next two months..silence is deafening..some of the speculation is laughable. If Nasri really wants to leave to Man City it is for the money..he is not worth keeping. Man City are not guaranteed to win things next year. Today the Mail on Sunday stated “With the unsettled Samir Nasri heading to Man City along with Clichy and Cesc Fabregas looking certain to join Barcelona, the loss of a fourth key player would be a body blow at the Emirates” Written by an over paid underworked talentless journo who claim they have undisclosed sources etc. How can Arsenal let such players go with an all important Champions League qualifier almost immediately? Lets see what happens in the next two months. Wenger is a good coach and a great manager with a weakness for defending which he must address.

By far the best article I’ve read. I’ve been stressing the need for Arsenal fans to be more patient and reasonable since season’s end. The signings will come, we’ll be very active and the big names will come. Wenger is renowned for his prudence and the Professor will indeed strengthen the squad. I too, believe Nasri will stay, with Fab waving goodbye. Once Fab leaves, there is strong suspicion that the funds will be used to fill a couple of positions that were vulnerable last campaign. At the same time Wenger is looking to offload his fringe players so we could see a signing, then offload, then another signing, followed by another release. This may be the trend for coming weeks.

if the quote of nasri is factual them it’s very sick cus what is the probability that arsenal won’t win the premiership coming season. some players can be very ambitious and eager for success but Wenger has a different feelings about things here. ask him to speak his mind about this and analyse his statements then u will know the actuality of situation around here. nasri wants garantee while wenger want the opposite that is the fact!!! no disrespect………

Hmm……one of the reasons I always liked being a gooner was the prevalence of a more ‘thinking’ fan base. The last couple of seasons have given me cause to think again.
Success is entirely proportinal to the crteria used to measure it. Arsenal’s consistant run in the top flight and Europe whilst having the most financially sustainable clubs in European football equals succes by the most basic but well measured criteria. Further to the above accurate statement about how moronic the media are, add hypocracy to the list. Not long ago clubs such Chelsea were being heavily criticised for trying to buy success, well you can’t have it both ways.
As for players coming/going, perhaps we need to find comfort in being a part of a club not prepared to capitulate to excessive player demands. Bottom line is the future looks bright for arsenal. Stop winging and enjoy watching good football with a clear concience and a superiority complex. I wouldn’t change current situation for one title win followed by huge dept, constant manager change and an unsure future.
I ask gooner fans to stand apart from the crowd of short sighted idiots that make up the majority fan base of other clubs.

Come on, get real.
Nasri wants more money and is threatening the club, as Adebayor did 2 seasons ago. Even if the club yields and he stays, his relationship with the club and the fans will suffer. And so will his performance. He will leave eventually, as Adebayor did.
Cesc wants to to go back to Barcelona. The reason why he hasn’t left is, Barcelona still tries to buy him on the cheap. If he stays, his heart is no longer in it. If he goes, Wenger would never buy a replacement with Cesc’s calibre. Simply because it’ll cost Arsenal 30+M and Wenger spends on bargains.
Clichy will go for sure.
These are facts, not stuff made up by the media. If you think players are loyal to the club no matter what, you’re so wrong. Top players stay only if the club can offer either medals or money or both. Arsenal offers neither.

I actually burst out laughing when i heard van P was gonna leave, i think it just shows how desperate for a story some of these hacks have become. for me whats probably worse is how some of our fans are actually falling into the trap and believing this rubbish. Some good and valid points in your article, common sense at last. The transfer window has only just opened and im sure there will be a few in and out over the next few weeks, you will all know who we have signed when the club announce it. FACT

You’ve got a point of view Anthony but you cannot get away from a few basic facts:
1/ Almost everybody knew we needed to strengthen our back line apart from Wenger. Established ex-players are now coming out in their droves;people previously loyal to Wenger.
2/ Wenger has allowed 2nd team players to fall asleep on contracts of £40 to £50k which makes it very hard to shift them.
In my view it was inevitable that if Wenger never made the signings that we all knew he should have made it would end up demoralising the few good players we do have. The midfield and attack could not carry on punching goals into the opposing net when it became predicatable that the defence would collapse……… game after game after game.
I’m afraid Wenger has been allowed to bring this “media crisis” on himself with some bad decision making and a very weak and naive boardroom.

Anthony, it is our extreme love for the club that makes us shiver each time a rumor comes up. Similarly, the club has not helped with matters, because since the end of the season there is virtually no activity. By now, some of us were expecting to have seen some departures from the club, because it is only then that you can assess the situation to know who is needed to fill a particular slot.
Please understand the situation we find ourselves in, because we have gone down this road before and nothing happened. In the last two seasons, we lost out on the premier league titles because we failed to reinforce our squad in the January window. As a good student of history, we have every reason to be worried, since all the actors are still in place. If we had a new manager and he was bidding his time, i will be fine with that, but here, we are talking about Arsene Wenger who has the tendency to remain adamant even in the face of major problems in his set up.

Thank God for fans like tony who take the time think before posting articles. Some times i wish some of these arsenal blogs who take every crap they read as fact, can actually make up their own stories and see how the reactions of fans will be. Headlines like ‘NASRI: I want to win trophies at arsenal’ or ‘FABREGAS: Barca don’t need me but arsenal do,so I’m staying’. Its sad that most arsenal fans believe a story of a player leaving arsenal than a player coming to arsenal and re quick to judge the incoming player even before he kicks a ball.

How do we differentiate fans who have gone through heart aches and tribulations with new trendy well heeled ones? We don’t know.
But how do we not know if the ‘fans’ who are writing rubbish about the clubs, are actually associates of agents and betting businesses who are capitalizing on juicy speculations?
I think more ‘fans’ fall in the last category.
I guess more real fans who enjoy the club and its philosophies are mainly the silent majority.

Stop worrying. Players WILL leave, thats modern football, and they will leave for MONEY. But do you know what The Arsenal will survive. We have seen it before and we will see it again. Take heart that you support Arsenal Football Club and not the players who come and go. Take heart that Arsenal refuse to pander to players who try to dictate to the club. Take heart that their will still be a few players unlike the modern breed, we thank you Mr Adams, Mr Bergkamp,

@Gunnersfan!: what do you mean by “the goalkeeping situation was not fixed”? Last season, Arsenal turned out to have two quality keepers whom Wenger kept on the bench. I have grown accustomed over the years to his inability to recognize goalkeeping talent, but thankfully, he’s been forced to. In my opinion, Arsenal don’t need any new goalies, having both Fabianski and Szczesny who’ll compete for the spot. Almunia should go, Lehmann has already retired again. I call that “fixing the goalkeeping situation.” Or perhaps you meant Arsenal to buy someone particular? De Gea? Reina? Spend millions on a player that is not really needed anymore?
“we got rubbish from the second division french league like kos and players like squallaci and chamack” – I vehemently disagree. Koscielny had a good season, some ups, some downs, but generally fit quite well for someone with no experience in the Prem. Calling him “rubbish” proves you haven’t paid attention. Squillaci had a harder time, and proved to be a miss. Chamakh didn’t do much better, but in his case, Arsenal should give him another chance. He has the potential, it ould be a waste to let him go now.
And finally: why do you think the club has spent so little on transfers of late? It’s already a tradition that Arsenal doesn’t spend big, but it’s only just managed to break even over the Emirates move. That’s beyond Wenger’s jurisdiction, mind you, but more importantly, money itself does not guarantee quality. I enjoyed watching Koscielny play, he’s faster and more imaginative than many a seasoned English centre-back. That’s the kind of investment I like wenger to make, and why should I mind if it’s French?

A mixed response I see!
Of course I would like to have a couple of confirmed signings by now to ease the nerves but just because they haven’t happened doesn’t mean they won’t. Nobody has really made any moves in the transfer market yet other than Man U. Yes Liverpool have paid £20m for an un-proven teenager who wasn’t even the best player in the England u-21 squad. That hardly counts.
Also this Nasri business, if you ask me, his agent is doing a bit of a Rooney and holding the club ransom with contract negotiations knowing full well there have been no concrete offers, just media speculation. Now I’m only basing this on a gut feeling. However if you had’ve read the last paragraph in The Sun, it would’ve read:
“NASRI ROCKS ARSENAL WITH CONTRACT SNUB
According to an Arsenal insider, Samir Nasri is ready to rock the board by handing in a transfer request as Manchester United’s interest hots up. Nasri’s pals have told The Sun that he is desperate for a move to United and will boycott Arsenal by wearing a Spurs shirt outside The Emirates whilst tied to a tree. Arsenal are thought to have resigned themselves to losing the quality Frenchman and have lined up 35 year old soon to be mother Jill Jones on a free as a possible replacement as her unborn child looks a real prospect for the future. Wenger yet again tightens the purse strings.”

Man United already got their primary targets
that is Young Jones and Degea
a midfielder is their main target and these big names dont come instantly they take time
for Us Samba Cahill and Parker are all primary targets whereas Mata Benzema/Falcao and the others are are secondary or main targets which take time for negotiating and agreeing for a fee
all we have is a BLOODY 1M Signing 1M for Heaven sake what crap is that Idiot doing we are in BLOODY CRISIS
He is waiting till august for players so their price comes down i
He says he wont spend 50m for a player but we are losing Nasri and Fabregas so yeah U gotta FRIKKEN SPEND 50M FOR A PASTORE OR SOME QUALITY PLAYER!!!!!!! to replace both

the fact, the player exodus now we are facing in and buying activities are to slow for us.

Firstly I’ve been an Arsenal fan since my dad took me in the 50′s to Arsenal v Man Utd, which Utd won 5-4. So I’ve over 45 years of being a fan. Wenger I feel has lost his respect for the fans. Ferguson bought Ashley Young early and gave the United fans an excitement rush. The United fans would be buzzing. Here at Arsenal we have no early signing (even though we are in Champions League play offs). No excitement, no buzz, no nothing. No wonder fans, present players and big names are fed up. We all want a dopimine buzz. A player buzz. To feel excitement. Wenger you are about as exciting as Vera Lynn at Glastonbury. Praise to Alex Ferguson who understands the psychology of football. Wenger just does not get it anymore. We are now only a business, no longer the excitement factory of the “invincibles” days. Ferguson is a fired up realist. Wenger is stuck in some idealistic inner business conversation that does not translate into winning trophies, just saving money. Please Arsene…wake up. Give us excitement and joy. Sign somebody…pleeeeezeee.

Actually a little bit worried about the possibility of Van Persie leaving, despite him seeming like a loyal player in the past. When recent bogus comments attributed to him on more than one occasion have appeared in the press, he has gone to efforts to discredit these or say his words were taken out of context- however there has been no such denial of claims he would hand in a transfer request if Fabregas and/or Nasri leave. Of course its so hard to know if it’s worth believing anything/much you read- the huge volume of worrying news about Arsenal does suggest at least some of it is true though.

I would first like to agree with this post. its not all doom a gloom. I will support arsenal till the end but the fact still remains that signings are needed if we want to really contend for the title next year. Again wengers transfer policy does sometimes work but with cesc on the way out we really need some big players not young players that could become great in time to fill the gap, and lets not ignore the clear defensive frailty we still have. I agree that the large part of transfer speculation is rubbish but i would still like to seem some more action from arsenal sooner rather than later.
