Arsenal’s Oxlade-Chamberlain England call-up likely – What about Jenkinson?
One of the Gunners’ most recent youngsters to hit the headlines of late is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who, at just 18 years of age, has already managed a hattrick at Under-21 level for England and has scored twice for Arsenal in just four appearances. Now, with the pair of friendlies coming up against Spain and Sweden next week, it seems that Fabio Capello is prepared to ‘experiment’ with different players with an eye on next year’s European Championships, meaning that Oxlade-Chamberlain could well be in the squad.
However, he isn’t the only young Englishman who deserves at least recognition for his performances. Carl Jenkinson – eligible for both Finland and England – may have shown glimpses of inexperience in his time covering at right-back for the injured Bacary Sagna but his pinpoint crossing technique and endless energy have put him ahead of Johan Djourou in the pecking order for that full-back spot.
Arsène Wenger commented on the player following the Gunners’ West Brom win: “Today he had a very interesting game with the quality of his defending and the quality of his crossing. The pace of his improvement is very interesting. His energy levels are absolutely amazing.”
He may have performed poorly against Manchester United – getting sent off in the process – but the improvement he has shown since then is indeed impressive. In recent games, he has been described as many Gooners as among the best crossers in the team, his delightful right foot placing beautiful balls in and around the box. His defending, meanwhile, may not be up to the level of Sagna’s as he does get caught out of position at times, but it is improving with every game.
Glen Johnson would still be the obvious first-choice for Capello, but Kyle Walker and Micah Richards are the only other potential suitors to the position. Micah Richards may offer more of a physical presence than Jenkinson but Capello has never been overly keen on the Manchester City defender, whilst Kyle Walker offers nothing that Jenkinson doesn’t. In fact, the Arsenal youngster’s use of the ball is arguably better than Walker’s and so some might argue that he deserves at least a chance before the European Championships begin next summer.
He may not be ready quite yet but can Jenkinson genuinely compete for a place in Capello’s squad for Euro 2012 (if he chooses England over Finland)?

jenkinson just needs time. he has the raw talent but with wenger he has the potential to be an arsenal hero and maybe world class.

He needs more time before he can play at international level. However, when he becomes experienced, he will be one of the best RBs in the world. And Who doubted Wenger when he bought Jenkinson? He still has a lot to prove but is already proving all the critics and doubtful fans wrong. Never doubt Wenger and the ‘unknown’ players he brings to the club.
Up the gunners!

Agree jenkinson is a fantastic crosser of the ball , but glen Johnson should not be first choice for England I’d have Micah Richards anyday . I think chamberlin is a year at least away from being a permanent fixture in the England and arsenal team , however the future is bright for these two players.

Have to say, I was a little harsh on Jenkinson at the start of the season… I feel he is now really beginning to prove himself… Well done Jenkinson for showing up your critics from earlier this season [post Man U]… I was indeed one of them… He has proven himself to be mature-minded, quite quick, strong over the ball, and with a decent enough cross to create chances… Just hope he can now build on his recent performances, and in general this experience he is getting!!! Jenkinson will prove to be a fine acquisition… Well done Carl for filling the vacuum at RB Sagna’s injury created!!

England hahahaha! He is terrible and whatever Wenger was thinking in signing a kid who was useless at eastbourne on loan, I dunno! typical that people think one average performance makes him good! Ha he is useless

people keep forgetting CJ is a 19 year old from charlton; not everyone is a prodigy so base your expectations of him on his age and level of experience and you’ll see that he’s a really good defender, good enough for England – maybe not this season or next – but after that just watch

i think jenkinson also deserves the call-up…if he is not part of the team then maybe capello will have to do something about the youngstar no need to worry about him he is still young and can be a future for both england and finland

Arsenal is a very fragilr team… Even though with our recent win of form… Arsenal’s defence look’s solid now but the team is not ready yet… Top 4 finish is a major doubt… Oh and just because we won a romping 3-5 against Chelsea at the bridfe… that doesn’t mean our trouble’s are over… The defence seemed to have dozens of mistakes during the WBA match… The team look’s fragile in defence and midfield… THis team is a team that can be torn apart 10-0 if we become fragile… Example of teams ;
Manchester City 10-0
Real Madrid 10-0
Barca 20-0
Tottenham 6-0
Our team is no match for a top4 finish this year… Sorry lads…
Comment of defence;
Andre Santos ; Not happy with RB position, yet not really a good dribbler yet his defensive discipline is very poor… If Ronaldo or Messi was playing at the right against Arsenal with Santos in it… The scoreline must’ve been outstanding…
Djourou ; Why oh why… he should not be at RB… glad that jenkinson’s back.. his slow and his confidence is dead… He look’s like an inexperience player… he should never be fielded in the XI unless Arsenal have a crucial injury list…
Squillaci ; I don’t even wanna talk about him… His slow… he has experience but his past his glory days… Sorry squid…
Mertesacker ; He is good, he is now competing his position with the verminator… He is a world class player… he has experience and quality… he just can’t find his real touch like his old club Werder Bremen… Sooner or later i think he will find it.. and bcome a world class defender…

LOL you’ve got to feel it for the scousers… Oxy’s hit two goals, the same as Carrol and that too in less than half the number of matches he’s played… And oxy costs 15m less than half of Carroll. Gotta trust Wenger when it comes to signings..

Jenkinson is a typical Arsene Wenger’s signing, remember how rubbish Adebayor, Diaby, Flamini were at first? Right now they’ve become world-class talents.
Carl needs playing time and in 2-3 years he could become one of the best full backs and by that time Arsene should present him the number 2 shirt. Dixon won’t mind!
