Arsenal agree terms for Joel Campbell

Posted on July 17, 2011 by admin

It looks like Arsene Wenger has masterminded the arrival of yet another unknown talent at Arsenal after it was revealed by Joel Campbell’s team in Costa Rica that they have agreed to sell the youngster to the Gunners for a price of $1.5m (£930,000).

Visit 365 italia to place bets at the best bookmaker worldwide.

The 19 year-old has been extremely impressive for the Costa Rica U20 side this summer, as well as taking the step up to the senior national side, despite only playing a handful of league games for his club Deportivo Saprissa.

It only remains for Arsenal to agree terms with Campbell before the signing is officially announced, but according to Gunnerblog (who tracked this transfer from beginning to end) this could be as early as tomorrow.

This is an opportunistic signing by Wenger and it is unlikely that he could have done his famous intensive research before securing the deal, but to get such a rising talent for under £1m could end up being the bargain of the century.

The problem with buying unproven youngsters is, as usual, the need to get a ‘special talent visa’ to get him a work permit to work in England, so it seems that, like Ryo Miyaichi and Wellington last season, Campbell will have to be loaned out for a year or two before he can actually play for Arsenal……

oh great! Anothr 19 year old and u think Arsenal will win any trophy? Wat a joke. Wenger is still busy buying kids who play in leagues even lower than the cocacola championship, why not a player with proven qualities. ARSENAL IS GOING LOWER JUST AS IT HAS BEEN FOR THE PAST SIX YEAR. GUNNER ALWAYZ

I understand Wenger is an attack minded manager and easier to judge players on goals and assist rather than clean sheets. But come on Wenger get ur thumb out ur ass and do something about our defence.

Looked Shaky yesterday and Mannone is no number 2. Scillaci is utter shit.

Alvarez is a 23 year old who is not an international. All Arsenal’s regular midfielders are internationals. Arsenal should sign regular internationals.

We don’t need a central striker ‘coz when Gervinho arrives he could play at right wing meaning Theo would move to the centre – which he craves so much – when RVP takes his customary injury break of minimum 3- 4 months.

  13. demongooner says:

@Arunavameister and Tyber , how the hell can you say a great signing? when one , no one knows anything about him, two he’s not signed and it just speculation.
@ Tobey , as for you tobey let me name a few unkowns wenger has signed before you slag him off , anelka, veiria, petite, clichy, nasri, fabrigas, van persie, just to name a few,so if this deal does go through give the player a chance before saying what the hell wenger doing.
like others have said lets wait and see if this report is true, me myself , i still believe wenger is a great manager, and i understand,we need a few signings but not as many as the spoilt arsenal fans think.
with frimpong eastmond, landsbury(hopefully) cogquin and sunu,Miyaichi and Wellington, as well as miguel all waiting to come through i think we got a very promising future, trouble is the spoilt fans who think spending money on overrated players will bring us success, and getting rid off wenger would be the right thing to do, well let me tell you losers again, overspending doesnt buy you success nor does sacking a successful manager like wenger, as i said before and be patient and i think we’ll see a team that will emulate the invincables.

bradster honestly your reply was so funny and mis informed, 1, mannone is our 4th choice keeper, the defence was not shakey ,but had sqillachi and traore starting inthe side which agreed they not our best defenders.
friendlies mean nothing to clubs it just a pr excercise for club and far east, and to get the players match fit, it would’t off mattered if we had lost 4 or 5 nil as long we fit and ready for the start off the season.
    oh and emirates cup lol

  21. Tobey says:

@Demongooner the last 4 you named anything in common
they have all been 6 years without trophies
on more common thing is that all took time to reach where they are
Clichy took 4 seasons to become a regular and perfomed well in his 2007-2009 season
Fabregas took 2 season to make a difference to the team
Van Persie became a regular during our 2004-2005 campaign
1 season after he joined us
Nasri took us 3 years to make him a proven player
if we get him it would take 1-3 season for him to make some use to our team
i aint going against him but This isnt the time to buy 19 year olds we need players who have shown they can handle the PL we dont need 50m players
we just need someone like Samba or Cahill who are worth 12m and 17m respectively

  22. 49Unbeaten says:

I can understand that the majority of fans are a bit miffed but we will ALWAYS have to sign young talent. We’ve missed out on Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi and a host of others in the past but we’ve also bought players like Anelka, Fabregas, Vieira, Ramsey, RVP, Henry etc too. Realisitically i’m all for signing youth as long we get experienced players as well to stay competative but this young Costa Rican guy is something else. I’ve seen him play a few games and was left speechless everytime. If we have signed him i can guarantee that we will have a world class superstar for years to come. @ demongooner

Anelka was not an unknown, infact he was tipped to be the next Maradonna and was being chased by many top European clubs. Get your facts right. But, i completely agree with you Arsenal have signed many unknowns that have become world stars. Everyone needs to understand that Wenger does not buy superstars, he makes them. Can’t argue with that. At the end of the day we should buy these youngsters, however make atleast one big name this summer i.e. Samba, Hazard.

If we dont win anything this year Wenger will leave. I believe that is the right thing to do, but before everyone jumps to conclusions i think will miss Mr. Wenger a lot more than you think…

  29. Hanenyo says:

It doesn’t take years to discover talents like fabregas, Wilshire etc they broke into the first team not beacause they spent years trying to convince us but because they are bundle of talents. So if you are here, trying make excuses for those players that have been in the team before the arraival of Wilshire and Ramsey then, you need to think again. For six good years they have been at the club with nothing to show for opportunities and resoures they have been given.
Are we now saying those players should be kept at Arsenal? While we continue to pay their wages and Arsenal will continue to decline in value?

    @Greg
I can’t read almost everything you wrote, but I can tell you that you’re wrong. Barcelona have not signed anyone yet, and we have signed gervinho. I go to the Emirates every week, I speak to fans most weeks, and I have never met anyone who wants wenger out. I won’t even comment on the kidnap thing.

good but pliz if wenger loans that kid…..he’s shit…that kid is better than chamakh…prove me wrong!!!!
sell fabregas for 35 million en buy at least 2 good replacement rather than keeping a player who doesnt want to stay.
Why the hell is fabregas the captain again???? a captain is supposed to sick with his ship but not to abandon it.
at least VP to b our captain whether fab goes or not.
Nasri should also be sold to an Italian league in exchange with another talent.
Wenger should not be pushed like a child, let him stand up for these stubborn players and let them go, they are not gods, I believe arsenal can do better than this…..sometimes letting them go might be the beginning of a new arsenal.
Wenger should try selling nasri to inter milan in exchange for sneidjer……

  34. Pavlos Pavlidis says:

Since when is it bad to sing a promising young player for less than 2 million? I think some of the so called ‘fans’ are being too ungrateful. Or they are content with bying just ‘experienced’ players and in some years having a team with an age average of 28. Is that what you want? Haven’t you gotten used to Wenger bringing in young talent? Didn’t you know that he buys for 1M and sells for 10M? I bet that if Wenger leaves at some point in the future you will be a lot more bitchy about whoever replaces him, because it seems to me that you people think it’s easy like that to just bring a nea manager in and take trophies without losing a single match.
Shout all you want. What you can actually do and will matter is SUPPORT. That’s why we ‘re called SUPPORTERS.
