Arsenal and Spurs fighting over Barton, and it seems we can forget Mata

Posted on August 01, 2011 by admin

There ae more Arsenal transfer rumours around this evening and it seems that Sky Sports “understands” that both Arsenal and Tottenham are chasing the Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

This is not the first time the Gunners have been linked with Barton, but this time around it seems that Newcastle have decided that they want him out at any cost, and will let him leave on a free transfer. The ex-England hardman is more and more outspoken lately and has annoyed his bosses at Newcastle once too often, leaving them no choice but to show him the door. Obviously Wenger is going to be linked with anyone available for free, but would he really buy a convicted thug to try and stop Lionel Messi?

Strangely enough this news has arrived at the same time as it is revealed that a buy-out clause in Juan Mata’s contract at Valencia has expired at the end of July, which means (according to the Metro anyway) that Arsenal will now have to pay £28m if they still want to persuade Valencia to let him leave.

Now we all know that a figure like that would practically give Wenger a heart attack, so there is very little chance of him coming to Arsenal in the forseeable future, even if Barcelona paid £40m for Fabregas tomorrow…….

Deja vu.. Again we miss out on a great player what a surprise. And Barton? Come one if Cesc leaves then Wenger can’t show with a player like Barton. Hello this is ARSENAL!! One of the greatest clubs on the whole world. We need QUALITY! Wenger’s transfer policy shows a lack of ambition. We don’t need to get a Ronaldo or Messi for 100mil but come on Mata for 18-22mil would’ve been a great deal.

  8. billy says:

Barton had a poor public image but to call him a ‘thug’ is rather unfair. Through twitter he’s been proven to be a fair more intelligent and compassionate person than the average guy gives him credit for. He’s made mistakes in the past true but with regards to speaking out against his club, one has to keep in mind that his club is in a state of disarray and is being lead in completely the wrong direction by the chairman. Asking where funds from the £35 million sale of Andy Carroll went, for example, is perfectly legitimate. He’s not the only one ‘talking out’ against his club either, Jose Enrique has made similar comments.

He wouldn’t make any great impact on the team, I don’t believe. But he’s a solid player and won’t ask for astronomical wages, I think he should be seriously considered, but then again, what do I know…

    ( I didn’t call him a “Thug” I called him a “convicted thug”. That is a fact – ADMIN)

The source for the Mata “news” is Ballague. You know the same one that has been saying for 2 summers now in a row that Cesc will sign for Barcelona today. And he repeats this every day till it will happen one day and then he can say: see you I told you so.

So if you really want to believe that person be my guest..

Like Walter said, Balague says a lot of nonsense but sometimes he’s right, like with Ronaldo’s move to Real. Lets hope this is just some more nonsense. I’d really love to see Mata in an Arsenal shirt. Players like Barton shouldn’t even be linked with a club like Arsenal..

  28. AlbertC says:

Based on Saturday and Sunday’s perfomances, I’d say we’re doomed next season. Gervinho was classy, but we all know that even Messi alone couldn’t help us win the title next season. This is a team sport, and requires a solid squad from the back upwards, and I’m afraid that a solid squad in comparison to the other top teams is something we simply don’t have. However as many people have urged you to do before, calm down and be patience. The transfer season is not closed yet and won’t be closing for a long time. Wait and see. As it stands we are doomed, realistically speaking, as optimistic as I want to be, we are doomed as it currently stands. But I believe that Mr Wenger is no fool, he knows that the majority of gooner fans are have grown increasingly impatient in the last few years especially with all the opportunities we’ve thrown away, and I think him and the board will stay true to their word and delivered some well needed talent to add to this team.
As for Fabregas, don’t be angry at him, blame Barcelona, they’re the ones who’ve tapped him for the last two years and have failed to pay up, they are the culprits of this whole fiasco and show your frustration at them. The way they publicly conduct their business is distugsting and almost animal-like, parading their excited almost as a monkey would do, and that’s an insult to the monkey by the way. So I guess what I need to say is stay patient, trust in the team and the boss, because by turning on our own we’re potentially slimming our chances even more, what the squad needs now is our support, especially with the younger players they have a lot of potential and it’s not going to be unleashed with all this negative talk, I’m sure they read Justarsenal.com as much as we all do.

  31. Charlie says:

Normally a supporter of Arsene i have to say that missing out on his buy-out clause would stink of indecisiveness. I’d like to see how this pans out but very poor if true and if Mata is genuinely interested in the move. I find it very surprising that Valencia have an option-to-buy on a player for 12m when they’re in such financial difficulty. Apparently a brilliant prospect so may be good value at 12m but that’s no good if the deal sends the club into administration. Their debt problems are very serious. It does suggest that Mata is probably gonna be sold because otherwise they’re committing financial suicide.

  34. Seriously says:

I think Barton is a good performer and can see him “over-performing” in an Arsenal shirt. He is a passionate player and clearly has loyalty to the Newcastle shirt as he legitimately criticized the club for a lack of ambition. I would expect Arsenal red to wash over him and transform him from a hard-head to a distinguished football player. Arsenal=Class. Barton+Arsenal=still classy but tough! See I’m sayin?

2)PHIL JAGIELKA – a cb is necessairy! KOS,DJ,SQUID are good cbs but we need a top class defender like him to accompagnie TV5!! i prefer him because he’s more experienced than CAHIL
3)JOSE ENRIQUE – another “bad boy”. a lb is also necessairy.traore and gidds are good bad don’t have any experience. also vermaelen is too slow and we need him as a cb!!
4)JUAN MATA – he’s top class. he can play at many places. we could use him as a left winger or as a CAM
5)MOUSSA SOW – we especialy need another strong and tall striker to accompagnie RVP and GERVINHO(when he will play at the left). he’s a top class goal scorer and also to young and talented!!

  44. MikeyBoy says:

If Arsene Wenger does not sign Joey Barton then I will be unable to defend him any longer. He acknowledges that we need a balance in midfield between the flair and creativity brought by nasri/fabregas/wilshere which is why Song is always in his starting eleven when fit. Therefore he has to see that this makes sense EVEN FINANCIALLY. Joey Barton with a little help from Kevin Nolan almost single handedly pulled back the 4 nil lead over Newcastle last season. I know he didn’t score all of the goals but he was the heart and soul of that comeback and spurred his team to one of the best comebacks i’ve ever witnessed. Now by all means Joey Barton has a shady past and he’d probably be the first to admit it but he is definitely one of the players I would rather see on my side than on the oppositions. He would sit nicely just behind one of our flair players and one of our box to box midfielders. eg nasri/rosicky/arshavin even and wilshere/ramsey maybe even diaby. We’ve needed a character with natural leadership since we lost vieira and although I wouldn’t have him as captain he would be exactly that. The expression ‘Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ springs to mind, Newcastle just booted their best player out of the back door so put a red and white arm around him entice him the possibility of Champions League football and add some much needed steel to our beloved yet rather flimsy team!

I completely agree that Barton is unpredictable but we already have that in our team with diaby and eboue who both on occasion get two bookings or a straight red for pathetic fouls or outrageous behaviour be it diving or petulence. At least with barton we know if he gets sent off it will be to prevent a goal scoring opportunity which i’m sure all football fans would say is a pill much easier swallowed. I agree with maxpower that Wenger needs to make quality signings but I believe we can accept that he refuses to sign a cheque for tens of millions of pounds so why not just take what we have which is still quality and strengthen our weaknesses from last year which was a lack of passion, belief, grit, determination and with it being a mans game BALLS. Imagine lining up against Arsenals current starting eleven compared to the invincibles. Who by the way did not pass the ball to victory but rather over powered the opposition in defence and midfield and then unleashed a devastating counter attack at pace. We had a team with the likes of Keown, Vieira, Parlour and Lehmann. Arsenal is the perfect home for a nutcase! Sign him up Arsene.

Well, barton will prove to be a very good signing if he comes ( thug or not) but we definately need steel at the back, i mean how long can we continue with Dj, Sqid (someone i personally think should retire), kol and vermealean? 55. Wenger is a joke says:

    John-John,

He’s not a good player. I don’t need to justify that fact. It should be you that is justifying why you think a player that can’t get into the England squad (so already behind Wilshere anyway – did you think of that? Perhaps not. Maybe you should as Arsenal should be strengthening based on what they already have), has been given a free transfer by his club and who at his stage of his career has never played for a big club and made any meaningful contribution at the top end of the table.

Chelsea have Essien, City have Yaya and Liverpool. Have Gerrard and you think Arsenal should have Barton – hahahahahahaha.
