Arsenal and Spurs fighting over England Youth star
It is being reported this morning that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs are both scouting the England U19 star Jamaal Lascelles, who made his first senior appearance for Nottingham Forest last weekend against Burnley, watched by both Arsenal and Spurs scouts who were alerted beforehand.
It was reported that Arsenal made a £5million offer for the 18 year-old last year and are still keen on taking him to the Emirates, but Forest made it harder by signing him up on a professional contract in April. It seems they are trying to play the two London clubs against each other like a game of High Stakes Poker!
Despite his age the young centre-back is already 6ft 2in and 13 stone and has put in some strong performances in his seven appearances for the England youth team, and is highly rated at the City ground.
Forest are trying hard to develop talented youngsters at the City Ground and sold Patrick Bamford to Chelsea on deadline day, and Lascelles is certainly going to be the next departure to swell the coffers of the Championship side, and where better for him to go than Arsenal?

Jamaal who????? If you are going to pay 5m for him, why not a few extra and get Vertonghen or Samba????
Opinions divided. What do you think?

Go 4 him. Arsenal need professional defender, creative midfielder and a very good and strong striker.

gooner c – so u would rather him become a spurs player for the next 10 years?
if the kid is quality buy him, but not at the expense of first team investment. squillaci, djourou, mertesacker, boateng and hoyte are all garbage, if we brought in 5 centre backs to replace them why not lascelles? though i also like dunk of brighton. as for immediate first teamers totally agree samba, vertonghen, hummels and subotic. for me if we bought 5 of these 6 and shred the other 5 i would be well happy.

Why are we such hypocrites? We were screaming our lungs out and demanding Wenger be sacked when he bought AOC and now the same Arsenal fans start screaming when Wenger substitutes AOC. If Wenger buys this kid and he turns out to be another TV5 we will all be eating our words. So lets hold our horses and wait.

That is typical signing of AW but I think as he plays in a defence position is already expensive to Wenger if Forest nee more than 5m

Spuds have about 20 CBs so they better sell some first. If Djourou is sold for around 5m and this kid is bought I think it’ll give the squad a good balance. Djourou isn’t gonna get much better and it’ll be good having the 4th or 5th choice CB as a talented English youngster. This is more tweeking than anything though, it’s in attacking positions that the squad needs some surgery.

for the first time in a long time I’ll actually back one of these signings. We’re pretty set for defensive players right now and baring the argument about who’s better or worse and who we “should buy” like Vertonghen, Samba, etc because they’re better than Per or whoever, this kid looks like a good investment for the future. He’s young, English, and we don’t want Spurs to sign anyone we’re interested in. While I’d love to have either Samba or Vertonghen or both, we have to get rid of players first and then worry about who they’re gonna displace in the squad. But I think healthy competition between players for their spot in the squad is a necessity.
I think our most immediate need in terms of defense are quality back-ups for Sagna or Santos in case they are injured. Our central defense is pretty solid. Sell Djourou and buy this kid for the future.

When this post had only one comment this morning I was going to post:
“How many people on here will complain about signing young players, and list people we should sign instead.”
I elected to have faith in people and not post it, as it seemed unfair to predict something that may not happen. Alas I was wrong, and it seems more and more “Arsenal fans” don’t understand the way in which Arsenal operates.
Our immediate future in defence is in a good situation at LB and RB. We have Sagna, Jenkinson and Yennaris for RB, and Gibbs, Santos, Yennaris for Lb. Also Coquelin if he isn’t careful may find himself converted into a permanent Rb….
Cb our future is not so certain, Vermaelen, Koscielny and Mertescacker, but behind them we have Miquel and no-one else who has broken through as yet. (I left out Djourou because he isn’t a young prospect and well he isn’t brill either)
It seems right to take a look and see what young CB’s are out there to protect our future in this position.
Some of you Arsenal fans need to stop complaining because this is how Arsenal operates, this is how we have operated for 20+ years. It won’t change now, nor ever. Get used to it, as other Arsenal fans have.
With regards to grooming young players and seeing them leave when they are top class…..you would not have said that last season before Faregas and Nasri left. They are the only 2 players who have done this. It’s an unfounded comment and does not reflect the vast number of players who have not up sticks and left. Do I need to list them? Probably:
Henry
van Persie – 7yrs
Song – 5yrs
Walcott – 5yrs
Vieira – 9yrs
Diaby – 5yrs
Clichy (began playing first team football at 18 left at 26. That is a good sign of loyalty)
Fabregas (Was always going to go back to Barca, stayed at Arsenal for 7 years)
Bergkamp – 11yrs
etc. etc. etc.
It is only Nasri and Adebayour who left prematurely and for money…..not to win trophies….both of their careers have since curtailed.

i agree with everyone that our defence is not as solid as it has been in the past, nor is it as solid as it should be. Vert is a great defender and have seen a lot of him over the last cpl years. as is samba. but i do agree that youth is the way forward right now. in mert, kos, tv5 we have 3 decent solid centre backs. johan can play there in emergency, as can song. miquel is coming through nicely, so one maybe 2 more promising youngsters will be enough to see us through the next 5 years. our midfield is also looking ok when all fit. hazard would be a great signing, but not likely to happen, so get real gooners, hes not gonna come to us. its up front we need to sort out. rvp cannot go on like this alone. even if he does stay next year(looking unlikely) then he needs a world class strike partner. we have back up strikers, wide men, and players who can sit off him. but we need another out an out striker to play with him or when hes rested.
As for the spurs thing!!!! are they really that good? are they better than us???? not a chance. the league table may not reflect this but take bale and modric out and they are a pretty average team. top 10 maybe but not top4. i think they will both be gone in the summer also, along wiv the tax crook rednapp. watch there bubble burst then
up the gooners!!!!!

I really think it was a wake up call that the OX gave us, any one of us thought he would be such a terrific player?
Well the 15M price tag told much, but again, i’ll honestly say even i didnt thikn it was a great signing, he didnt really prove anything concrete for such a transfer fee…
but today, just type his name on google, n he’s there, among the best revelation, n people saying he’s at the same level of established players, n even saying, his game reminds them of a certain L.Messi

Buying youth only never works. It only works when you have established stars and you can blled them into the squad over time.
