Arsenal bid for Brazilian star confirmed (And it’s not Willian!)

Posted on June 17, 2011 by admin

For the last few weeks Arsenal have been constantly linked with a move for the Shakhtar winger Willian, but according to the agent of his Brazilian team-mate Douglas Costa it is his client who has been the subject of a bid.

Costa is a Brazilian U20 international and was hugely impressive for Shakhtar in their run to the Quarter-Finals of this years Champions League, and was previously linked with a move to Man Utd in January, but Costa’s agent, Cesar Bottega, reckons that it was Arsenal that have made the first offer.

Bottega said: “The Gunners have offered the club Denilson in exchange for Douglas but Shakhtar said no. They are not interested in Denilson and would want only money.”

Arsenal fans were hoping to kill two birds with one stone by making a swap deal with the Ukranian Champions by off-loading the wantaway Denilson in exchange for Willian, but now they are going to have to look further afield for a buyer. Costa certainly would be a fantastic replacement for his fellow Brazilian….

Not only a disaster for Denilson but for Arsenal. Don`t know how long his contract has to run but it could be that his very presence as a squad member could affect the number of players Wenger can sign. It might be better to find him a spot in the Championship League rather than pay his wages.
It is a shame it`s been allowed to get to this stage.

I’m always sceptical when an agent comes out and says that his client has been approached. The club buying the player don’t want other teams to know in case they get competition but the agent wants to encourage competition so he can get the largest fee possible. What better way to advertise you players’ availability than to claim that a big club has made an approach to sign him. If it is true then the player is still another one for the future who hasn’t shown consistency at the top level and another attacking midfielder too, not exactly what us fans were hoping for. Gervinho has had at least two good seasons in Ligue 1 so i think we could be happy with him signing but not so sure about this kid.

Having said all that i’ve found a few choice quotes about him…..

But Shakhtar skipper Darijo Srna admits Costa is only likely to be a temporary team-mate.

“I’ve never seen such nimbleness – he is on a par with Messi. His speed with the ball and technique are out of this world.

Sir Alex Ferguson once described the 20-year-old as “probably the best young player in South America”.

“I know many scouts have watched him. Lots of clubs are taking an interest – the likes of United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

“He really does stand out, he makes a difference on the pitch. Douglas can beat three players with ease.

“This boy is hugely talented and is certainly a player destined for a big club.”

  9. Charlie says:

@Jermaine. Rosicky is finished at this level and we need one more playmaker to replace him so if this kid lives up to his hype perhaps he’s the one. JET isn’t ready as his loan at Cardiff proved and Eto’o is not a player to have as back-up to RvP, he’ll have tantrums. Miyaichi probably won’t have a work permit so will be inelligible. You can’t sell Nasri and still have him in the squad. That means we need 5 more attacking players. No wonder we’re being linked to every attacking midfielder in Europe. I actually think Nasri will stay and we need 2 or 3 new attacking faces which could be Gervinho, Douglas Costa and (dreaming now) Eden Hazard.

  11. FREDDY KOIGI says:

This is all good to hear that Wenger is making bids for good players and I believe Douglas Costa at Arsenal could be a really useful addition, BUT SHOULD HE REALLY BE A PRIORITY?.

I say NO!. We have enough attacking midfielders at Arsenal and despite all the criticism, Arsenal’s attacking midfielders creating more scoring chances than any other team in the Premier League, But what about our DEFENSIVE midfield?. It is pathetic! and the real reason why we collapse, they are more guilty that our central defense.

Make no mistake, I consider Alex Song a good enough defensive midfielder, but show me another one. Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby, Denilson and Aaron Ramsey were all born to attack not defend, and they are our defensive midfielders. Jack Wilshere work rate helps him in defending despite not being overly blessed in the art of defending, Abou Diaby strength helps him defend and attack on his good days but on his bad days he can’t defend at all, he actually gives the team away, Denilson came to Arsenal as an attacker and when he was moved to defensive role, he became disoriented and now he is a reject and Aaron Ramsey is yet to do anything to show that he can defend. Wilshere, Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey can all be effective as deep-lying playmakers with a real defensive midfielder behind them, and Song does that most of the times but the moment he is out of the team, he is in attacking mood or his form drops, We have no problem and the opposition players start running with the ball from their penalty box to our penalty box and score.

WE NEED A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER, PERIOD!. I don’t know about Blaise Matuidi and at 13 million, Why buy him?, Why not spend a little more on Javi Martinez, A defensive midfielder who is comfortable in possession and who can actually stand up when Alex Song is down! or somebody like Arturo Vidal, a player with enough stamina to get us through games or(and more importantly) why not finally get Daniel De Rossi.

Before I hear names like Daniel De Rossi, Javi Martinez, Arturo Vidal, Yann M’Villa or the more possible Blaise Matuidi, Guys who can actually protect our defense which must be commended for being the most exposed defense in the Premier League and still managing to retain us in the Top four, There will be no need to buy any attacking player. It just won’t work. We always score, meaning our attack is good, but we also always concede meaning our defense is poor and it is more pathetic in defensive midfield than in defense itself.

  18. Charlie says:

Freddy Koigi you do make a good point. With fear of being beaten down i’ll suggest Frimpong as a defensive midfielder that WILL be in the squad next year. He was in the squad last year before he got a serious injury. Arsene sees Denilson as a defensive midfielder so i think he’ll bring in a defensive midfielder when Denilson is sold. I agree that we need to rotate Song with another genuine DM. Not sure if Frimpong is the real deal but we’ve seen enough false dawns of young players at Arsenal so Arsene better be sure that he’s up to the task if he doesn’t intend to bring in an experienced player in that position. The safer option is to keep Frimpong as third choice DM for now and bring in someone with a pedigree.

Costa isn’t a priority but if he’s available and we can buy him then we should do so. We should ALWAYS buy players potential, BUT, we should strangthen the first team too. Buying Costa would do both.

When will Arsene Wenger learn ? Arsenal may play their fantasy football, but will they win anything?
I pretty much doubt it. Wenger is obstinate and stubborn; for his own good and will ultimately pay the price.Pundits and supporters alike know that Arsenal need to shore up their woeful defence. They dont need 2 central defenders;they need a back four.
Neither do they need any more outfield players. For a long time now Arsenal have lacked leadership at the higher echelons of the club to plan ahead for the future.Securing the services of;Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, and Martin Keown,as defensive coaches. When George Graham was Arsenal manager, his team had workrate and disipline in abundance. In stark contrast,Wenger’s team are spineless.Anywhere one looks their is a lack of leadership. The players get paid too much money and Wenger should have left 2 years ago,but has too much power.

haha im reading a lot of names on the first place i wanna bet how many people have seen matuidi playing ? i bet almost no one plus i read names like adil rami and witsel but they already been transfered to another club valencia and milan ,the only name who as far as i know is a match is parker hes cheap hes he experiecend and hes what we need on the midfield! cause song is too much in attack like diaby and co.

but i hope wenger knows what he is doing and im not gonna say costa is good or bad singing cause i dont know , but we need parker cause we lack a leader on the midfiel

its typical of wenger to identify two players in each team he wants to sign from .. one player to confuse the media meanwhile he has free access to the player he has in mind all the while .. good examples are the case of hatem ben arfa and eventually nasri , brede haageland and chris smalling (though man u pipped us to his signature) same with samba and phil jones , now william and douglas cousta …

This young lad is extremely talented, we should buy him and he could develop into a world class player. To be called the best young player in south america by ferguson deffinantly means something, would be a great buy. As long as we get Samba and a solid left back, a clinical striker (gervinho by the looks of it right now). Fabregas and Nasri are both looking to stay now anyway so Im optimistic bout this season, ARSENAL WILL RESTORE THEIR RIGHTFUL GLORY!

that would be a perfect replacement for samir who longs for manunited. i think wenger should just let him go or perhaps ask for nani who says “iam not afraid of Young” but its everybodies guess that the guy knows that he will warm the bench more often come next season. as for samir, i dont think that he will give his best the we know him next season coz his heart is with patrice evra at man united. so please mr wenger should bring Eden.
