Arsenal chasing Bosnia captain Emir Spahic if Mertsacker deal falls through
I have no idea where they got this one from, but there is a report this morning, in the NOTW, that Arsene Wenger is making enquiries about the Bosnian centre-back Emir Spahic as a fallback, in case the negotiations with Werder Bremen over Per Mertsacker fall through.
Spahic is a versatile defender and is also the national team captain so is very well respected in Bosnia. He currently plays for Montpellier in France, so Wenger’s scouts will have seen him play many times, and being 30 years-of-age, could provide well-needed experience to the Arsenal back line.
Also because of his age, he will come a lot cheaper than Phil Jagielka, who the NOTW claims that Wenger is still interested in, and his wage demands would be more in line with Wenger’s policies.
Wenger has made no secret of the fact that he is still looking for a centre-back so there is every possibility that this one might be true, especially as I have never heard of him before……

I actually think we will sign this guy, this defintley has ‘Wenger signing’ all over it. It’s not like NOTW said ‘hey let’s link Arsenal with Emir Spahic of Montpellier!’ I think there is some truth to it, even though NOTW are usually full of s***.
Still hope we sign Mertesacker though

why are we chasing short defenders like this dude or even Jagielka for 15m when we could buy a towering presence hangelaand from fulham for the same price and a yr younger, he’s a real beast and doesnt need adapting to the EPL!!!

mertesaker is too slender and also unproven, don’t let the world cup showings deceive as is always the case with the WC. besides, we need someone older and more established after all tommyV is our senior CB and he’s only 24!

Hangeland is a good shout but I think Gary Cahill is the CB Arsenal should have as their priority signing. He would add some real english steel to our defense and has all the attributes need to be an Arsenal CB, height, speed, a great leap, comfortable on the ball and good for a few goals. I think for 12- 13 million plus Wilshire on loan will be enough for Bolton and him to part ways.
