Arsenal close to re-signing Thierry Henry on two-month contract

Posted on December 29, 2011 by admin

Thierry Henry is now back in London and was in the stands watching Arsenal’s draw against Wolves on Tuesday, and it seems that he is seriously considering rejoining Arsenal for the next two months to cover for Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho.

The Telegraph this morning reports that fruitful talks have been held between Henry and Arsene Wenger and it only remains for an agreement to be reached with the New York Red Bulls before Henry can become a Gunner again.

Wenger brought Jens Lehmann out of retirement last season after a series of injuries to his goalkeepers, and now it seems that Henry is also set to return, but he is a lot fitter than the crazy German was when he joined last year. In fact Henry has impressed Per Mertesacker in training with the squad.

“I am very happy to train with him. He is training very well,” Mertesacker said.

“He has a lot of experience and he is a great opportunity for us, but I am not the manager and I do not know what is possible, for him or for us. In training he shows his class and it is good to have him with us.”

It is doubtful if the contract can be sorted in time for Henry to be in the squad to face Fulham next week, but he could be ready to face Leeds United in the FA Cup on January 9th. That would be the perfect opportunity for Henry to show that he still has the skills to play for Arsenal again.

Could we really be about to see the King back home at last?

  4. Colin says:

FINALLY. Per Mertesacker also said he wants AW to sign Podolski. Think about the team then with Wilshere coming back…Front line of Henry, RVP, and Podolski. I only became a die-hard gunner this past year and I was too young to see Henry in the Highbury days. But I can’t wait to see Henry step onto the pitch for the first time. In Arsene I trust!

I’m sure Henry still has plenty to offer for us. Even if he is 35 years old…look at Inzaghi at AC Milan, Totti at Roma, Drogba at Chelsea, Di Natale at Napoli…all those veteran strikers were banging goals and making contribution for their teams.

And I’m sure the arrival of Henry will surely motivate all the young guns in our team to perform even better!!

I’m excited, I believe most of the gunners fans here will be too !! =)

  7. Aussie Jack says:

I`m the impatient type and paperwork and bureaucracy upset me.I suppose the New York club need insurance cover for him and they`ll be looking to make a good quid plus Henry`s wage (100K a game, I`m guessing) so we could be looking down the barrel of 2 million for two months which is cheaper than comitting ourselves to an unknown.
    Let`s get on with it.

  8. Aussie Jack says:

Oh! and one other thing. Let`s cut out the romantics. He`s not Roy Rogers or John Wayne riding off into the sunset he`s Thierry Henry a very fit and professional footballer who can more than hold his place at Arsenal.

As much as I love Henry, I think this is a step backwards. We cant go back to ex players to save us. Have to buy new players, a striker, a midfielder and a left back !!!!!!

  10. Steve of Chiang Mai says:

Just a reminder to the gooners who think all Wenger has to do is make a trip to the “World Class Striker Emporium” on New Years Day and say “wrap this one up for me” – its not that simple.

If someone came knocking on Arsenal’s door asking for RvP on Jan 1 I’m guessing I know what your response would be….what makes you think other teams would be willing to part with their WCS just because you want it done?

No offense,Thiery Henry is certaintly a world class and a telisman once for arsenal but we need a stricker that will stay for real, not a 2month loan deal,we cant always go back to out ex players..get podoskie,he as already show his interest.

  14. Gooner Cape Town says:

The legend is too old and seeing we are still looking to build an Invincible Squad, AW should look to Podolski as a striker. We desperately need another Dutchman inside, as last time we had 2, (Overmars and Bergkamp) we were awesome- Vertonghen just sign boy! Loan deals will not work as the other big guns will make signings and agreements and we will be left behind again. We have the money so use it and secure top 4 finish and challenge next year. With United looking at Sneider, Chelsea and Spurs at Cahill etc, we have to move now, how about Samba- good defence and great in box? It seems Hazard will be Shitty’s target, so lets get him at 25m. Kroenke stated he will give financial support to get club back to where it should be………..
    Gooner always

  15. Aussie Jack says:

How many more times? Henry is a two month stop gap band-aid measure not a long term player. Reason? There are no world class strikers available at the right price in January we have to wait until the summer market opens then we can expect Wenger to buy, but right now we need someone to help RVP and cover for the ANC. Got it?

After all these arguments and counter arguments the decision lies with le Prof. He knows best what the team lacks, and what it needs.

We have 18 professional strikers on the books so a temporaray signing is the only real possibility unless someone comes in during the window for some of our dross.
Chamakh park arshavin murphy ansah neita wellington bendtner vela watt campbell freeman. i am not saying they are all dross but there are 12 strikers there that i am sure with the right offers would all be available. even if they all went we would still have walcott rvp gervinho chamberlain afobe miyaichi and now henry. of course i dont want them all out but i would certainly sell 6 of them and lash the money on 3 top strikers hazard bent and podolski would be awesome alternative to theo rvp and gerv with ox benik and ryo as the young guns. retain the loan trio of watt campbell freeman and may be wellington and ansah say goodbye to the rest

  18. Big Gun says:

@Aussie Jack. I disagree. Last transfer window there were players available, but the board were too stingy to part with their money. Mata is a prime example and he is probably Chelsea’s best player atm. Every club has their price, but Arsenal are always looking for the cheap way out.

As much as I like Henry, he is over the hill and I mean when last did he play in the premier and champions league? Much faster and tougher than MLS. Arsenal is one of the wealthiest clubs in the world, why we cannot fork out, especially after cashing in on players like Fab, Nas, Clichy the list goes on, can we not buy one damn striker???? One word – greed.

  20. SA gooner says:

I love TH14 but re-signing him on loan is 10 steps backwards and sends the wrong message to our players. Now RVP,Walcott,Wilshere and others will know that at arsenal you can move on to other clubs, win trophies and return late in your career. If the reasons that led Arsene to sell him to barca still exisit then this loan move doesn’t make any sense, it’s high time Arsenal buys a quality striker on a long term.

Just buy a young quality striker like pato or benzema. Then get hazard and gotze. Then we are sorted out for the next 5 years as we have a young squad with pure quality.

Another thing the reason why barca are so successful is because they have played together for a long time. That’s what we can do with these players

If Henry still has the skills? That is not the issue now. Skills don’t diminish with age, they improve. Henry may not have the stamina that he had when he was with us, but the skills cannot diminish – especially Henry whose game combined both pace and skills.

Guys guys guys, relax, take a chillpill and stop bitching. If Henry came back, i assure u not only will he perform, i reckon he is the 1 who will bring the best out of Young Park. Titi the great is always welcome, and his experiance for two months will be very much needed, once he is done, gervinio and chamack( im affraid) will be back, and in chamacks case, young will be ahead of him with a new attitude, we also have oxlade who ireckon will perorm as well, and than come end of season we may just bring in Podolski, now that my fellow gooooooners is realistic, so stop ur rubbish and throw away ur wishlists of signings in the bin, our squad is very big and with Sagna and Wilshere on the way back the only realistic signing could possibly be a full-back, and i wouldent be suprised if its an unknown player, as long as he can cover Wenger is happy with Santos and Sagna as first choice full backs. Now than i hpe u all understood what i wrote, and happy new year to my fellow gooners including mr Adam Kemp(are you alive)
    God bless the gooners

Afta all TH14 will come as cover 4 gervinho so lets bring him in, truthfully no team will want to lose its top players going into 2nd half of the season so lets stop suggesting unrealistic targets ,we have quality already. Our play is a bit scratchy coz we hv no full backs coz a cb is not a fb so the coming of sagna, santos will enhance our game so as jack wilshere .lets wait till end of the season & buy new payers. In arsene i trust.

henry would benefit the young guns in morale as well as experience ,& i do believe this is just another piece in the puzzle 4 the future as in coaching staff where there seems 2 b room 4 improvement ,in which case bring in keown 4 defensive dutys then in 5yrs we would be talking about worst place sceneario 2nd epl ,& finalists in champions league
