Arsenal linked with De Jong – The fear factor that the Gunners might need?
Today has seen a new Arsenal transfer rumour emerge in the form of Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Tough tackling and a hardman attitude are the first thoughts that come to mind with the player but the Dutch international undoubtedly has more to offer than that.
As well as his battling style, De Jong’s passing is impressive in its accuracy. In his last game against Villarreal in the Champions League – a match that City won 3-0 – he completed all but one of his 101 attempted passes and gave his opponents little chance of finding their way past him.
Having only started one Premier League game this season, it is clear that he is out of favour with City manager Robert Mancini, with Yaya Touré looking far more likely to create as well as perform the defensive tasks just as effectively as De Jong. The player wants to leave and would relish the chance of more European football.
Alex Song – a target for European giants Inter Milan and Barcelona – is similar to Yaya Touré in that he offers attacking vision and, to some extent, goals. Nigel De Jong offers little in terms of offensive prowess but his no-nonsense approach puts fear into the opposing squad in every game. His fearlessness when it comes to tackling has led to him becoming suspended unnecessarily, but he has only been sent off once in his whole career and so his ‘hacker’ attitude isn’t as horrendous as some might make out.
Unlike some weak and delicate players that have been linked to the Gunners, Nigel De Jong is capable of offering real clout to any team, and can fit into a squad that plays attractive football such as Ajax and the Holland national team. His wages may be an eye-raising concern but a footballer with aggressiveness on the pitch could well prove to be the final piece in the reconstruction of the newly bolstered Arsenal squad.
Could De Jong’s commanding presence in the centre of the park provide the defensive barrier that allows the unstoppable attacking talents to operate to even better effect?

It has never been easy for the gunners to win a game with 10 men, comfortably. If De Jong tackles inappropriately and is sent off in a march, can we cope? Barcelona is the model of a good footballing team in the world today not because they have hackers in the team in the mold of De Jong. All we need are decent players who can win a game comfortably together not one who has a propensity to get red carded and put the team under pressure.

Not the player I would have gone for but defiantly the kind of player we need. I wouldn’t mind him at arsenal.

What we need is precisely what we have: a strong fighter and a playmaker all in one… That’s what we have with song, that’s what we had with vieira or toure… I think de jong isn’t versatile enough for arsenal, even diaby is better in my opinion, and even koscielny would do a better job than de jong (I’m not saying I want him to be a DM I love him as a CB)…
So to me it’s an unconditional NO! He’s way too expensive and lacks the technical class that make arsenal so special to watch.
I’d rather M’vila… (more physical than coquelin, more clever in the game than frimpong… and he’s 20…)
That’s all folks, come on arsenal!!!

If he is willing to take the paycut, why not? And under wenger’s guidance, I’m sure his discipline will be far better. And he wont get booked too many times. But DeJong should come only if Song leaves. Cause then, Frimpong would then have proper experience andguidance. If Song does not leave, there is no need for De Jong come. Cause Song can defend tactically without getting as many bookings as De Jong and Song has more of an attacking mindset compared to De Jong.

leave koscielny at CB with Mersaker and try vermenator as a Def mid, Defencively strong, Dissaplined and great passing. Can also get foward and score if necessary !

Arsenal really dont need De Jong. In contrast to last year the midfield doesnt “check out” when they meet the physical teams. Last year it was abyssmal to see how we let us being man-handled by the likes of Stoke.
Arteta isnt as flashy as Fab and nasri, but he has more grid, and the re-emergence of rambo is also a plus….He backs down for noone.
So Man Shitty can keep de Jong and his heavy salary. Besides that he is, in my opinion, a dirty player which eventually will do more harm than good to the team.
What Arsenal should get is a CB that can either cover a LB or a RB and a Striker/winger. I would love us to get a winger like Pires. He was a bloody dangerous winger in all aspects of the game..he could score, he could dribble and he could burn any defender going up against him.
I will not throw any names out there cause AW will surprize all anyway and sign some we at the start will moan about, but in most cases end up loving.
Eventhough we have been without a trophy for 6 years its still fantastic to be a Gooner.

he is more mobile and quicker than song. song is a very good player having said that, but de-jong is better and is what we need and im sure RVP would welcome his fellow countryman and perhaps be a reason for him to stay with us.

Take him please for if we are not getting mvilla by the looks of it then we can very well have an enforcer. Teams will be vary about us for they know he would be there, song doesnt intimidate players as dejong would.

No thanks. I wouldn’t enjoy watching Arsenal as much seeing his ugly mug in an Arsenal shirt. But in all seriousness, M’Vila would be a much better option. He is already a very good player and he is only 21. In three or four years under Wenger he would be a fantastic player. I think ridding the club of dead wood and their wages, securing RVP and attaining a quality forward are much more important than a defensive midfielder. And not just any forward, no duds, no bargain types. Cisse would be a realistic prospect but probably not in Jan, unless we offered over the odds. We do have Wilshere coming back at some stage, he is better than the De Jong and M’Vila, and arguably Song.

If we’ve to take one player from Man City, it should be Adam Johnson.

We all sound sometime as if we know better players than Arsene Wenger. We are not expert in this field even great coaches do make mistake in buying some players. Some players may work well in his previous club but come to new club he fade up or he may fade up in his old club but come to new club he marshal it well.

Song gets sent off too … remember ? So does Frimpong – who has a lot to learn. Song is a better footballer than De Jong but protects the back 4 less well. Gets caught in possession in dangerous positions by overplaying. Anyway Song’s agent is getting geared up to screw the Arsenal. Having failed to buy Parker (because at 30 he is too old !) De Jong is exactly what Arsenal needs but NOT of course what Wenger wants. He still believes we can play every other team off the pitch !!

Not on your nelly. Its difficult to be a proper wife when you’ve been a prostitute. The money these people are used to are out of our ability to pay. Its like the girlfriend of a drug dealer, she cant find another man who can afford to have her.
I’d love to have any other tough tackling midfielders who have some football skills unlike Nigel De Jong who lacks any sense of football. Did you see him in South Africa by chance? I rest my case.

yes .. getting de jong to play alongside song will be like an insurance for the for the defenders and the team as a whole when we go on to attack our opponents and will a give our creative attackers like ramsey and arteta freedom to focus on creating the goals fo Gervinho, Van Persie and Walcott… hope we go get him…. Go ARSENAL….Gunner 4 LIfe

I have a great feeling arsene is on the lookout for a new DM. quite terrified with the prospect of seeing song and frimpong leaving for Afican nations cup in january. Can coquelin do it? or provided that vermaelen kozzy and per all fit we can push vermaelen as a DM for month or so.

Likely-hood that ManC would sell any player to a direct competitor? – 0%
Likely-hood that Arsenal would be willing to spend anything like as much as ManC would ask for him? – 0%
Likely-hood that De Jong would be willing to cut his pay in half? – 0%
As for De Jong being “suspended unnecessarily” – Are you being serious? Did you miss the kick to Alsonsos chest in the World Cup Final – that went completely unpunished!? he has also broken two players legs!
The 1 pass he missed in the champions-league match would almost certainly have been on the incredibly small number of his passes that was going forward instead of just backwards for a defender or the goalkeeper to deal with.

this is a move that i would like however it will not happen because it will slow down the progression of frimpong. Therefore this rumour is rubbish!!!

Nigel De jong would have been fantastic for us a couple of years ago. But alex song is world class and our most underrated player by a country mile. Alex song is an absolute brute, A firm favourite of mine, he passes well, tackles, gets into good position, scores….and can play CB (well) We need to keep on to him, no room for De jong, as soon as Wilshere is back our Midfield will look great.

we have enough holding midfielders (song, wilshere, frimpong, and even ramsey)
i think we should get an attacking midfielder, such as kroos, gotze, hamsik, etc.

Why the hell do people want another defensive midfielder? We have 3 already and Song next to RvP and Wilshere is our best player. He is sooo underrated. Rather buy another defender that can play RB or LB, someone quick. With Sagna out and Santos a bit slow, we need 1 more world class defender. Otherwise buy another striker. We do not not need any more DM’s. Besides that he would cost a small amount which as we know money is something the board are not easily parted with. Frimpong and Coquelin need to be developed, and I guarantee you in a season or two they will be forces to be reckoned with especially Pong.

I totally agree that the addition of a player like de jong w add steel to arsenals game. The problem with us has been the ck of that Player that breaks up attacks and gives our defensive line a breather. Song is a more attacking midfielder with his eye for goal, de jong is a player in the mould of makelele and i doubt if City would be willing to let him go and if he would be willing to play for arsenal.
