Arsenal move on to Scott Dann as rivalry for Cahill hots up
It seems that Arsene Wenger has decided to move on to the cheaper alternative of Birmingham’s Scott Dann after finding the competition for Gary Cahill getting too hot with Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham all trying to get the Bolton and England defender.
The Mirror reports that the Arsenal boss is hoping that he will get a clear run on taking Dann to the Emirates, although it seems that Chelsea’s new boss Andre Villas-Boas is also checking out the Birmingham centre-back as a possible alternative to Gary Cahill as well.
Dann is 6ft 5in tall and would seem to be exactly the type of player that Arsenal need to help cope with their set-piece problems, and he is probably even more attractive to Wenger as his price will be closer to £10m.
At 24 he still has improvement in him under the correct guidance and he received many plaudits last season even though Birmingham ended up being relegated. If Wenger can’t get Samba or Cahill, then Dann looks to be the next best thing…..

I like to be calm and look at things in a positive light. But sorry you cant assure us things will change then pursue a good player who will benefit the club to only go for the cheaper worse option. Worste of all he will strengthen a rival… if Nasri, Clichy and Fabregas go only to be replaced by cheap bargains it will be an insult. Atleast come out and admit we are a selling club focused on value not trophies.

how is this penny pinching exactly, he would still cost us 10 million, i ask you which defender did we buy 2 seasons ago? for this fee and turned out to be gods gift… so just because he is trying to save 7 million which i believe could be used on other players like samba or given or whoever. and we have to remember also that this guy is pretty much a like for like player. he is english, he is taller but yes i have to admit i would prefer cahill but if it meens not paying a stagering 7 million extra for a like for like player, whats the point? now we just need to wrap up other key signings like samba like gervinhio and others

Scott Dann is the best young centre half in English football – better than Jones, Cahill, and certainly Samba – if Wenger gets him then we have another Tony Adams in the club – a player that will play for the shirt; organise a hopeless defense and get us back where we need to be. The idiots who are saying; not arsenal class because he’s come from Birmingham are idiots; this guy has come from non league to 2nd to 1st Divisions to Championship to England U21 and then to Premier league by 22yrs of age – unbelieveable desire and achievement. Exactly what our club is missing; a backbone of determination. Also he has great feet – left and right and can bring ball out. Aerially dominant in both boxes and captaincy material – who is the idiot above saying ‘is that what we’ve come too’ arguably the best AW has made (if it happens) in 5yrs – GET DANN

@cesc an @Baz who is danns? as this article is about Scott Dann…. this guy is a much better player than your copy of football manager would suggest, would Arsene Wenger have signed him if he wasn’t recommended by his scouts or the fact he played for Birmingham in the Premier League for 2 years and has experience of playing in the league, and his and Roger Johnson’s defensive partership was one of the best in the premiership until they both got injured

@shepherd yes what happened to mertesacker or even hanglehand i was very excited of the idea of signing those two but these rumors of cahill and samba will be our vision of ferdinand and vidic and all the other big partnerships. the fact that i have never heard or seen scott dann play for birmingham before this story say’s it all.

Scott Dann is 6t 5in tall not 6ft 2in – yes the BCFC website has it wrong!!!
Secondly he got injured when Birmingham were 10th in PL and wasn’t involved in their disastrous end of season. The season before BCFC were 11th and had one of tightest defences in the league.
At NO time did they ever concede more than 3 goals (and then only 3 times in two years he’s played for them ) – since he was out 2 x 5-0 defeats.
Everyone goes on about Cahill and Samba but they were in teams that got thrashed 5-0 in semi final against Stoke and Blackburn almost relegated themselves.
What is this with Arsenal fans now happy with foreign imports; isn’t it obvious that we need English/British centre backs that no how to defend in PL –
Dann would be superb choice but too many fans blinded by idea that foreign is best. Nothing won in years and why? hopeless defence that doesn’t keep it simple!!!

wenger needs 2 sign cahill and danns,2 english 2 strong defenders,forget samba,…..offer nasri 2 real madrid and try and get diarra as part of the deal,..also cash in on cesc,40m,…sell clichy 7m sell nicklas bendshit 7m,go and get defoe,also try and bring in as many english players as possible,forget signin spanish and french,all they do is wna run bk 2 spain or italy

and Koscielny, look were that got us no were.Stop being such a MISER Mr Wenger and buy some Quality Players.While you’r at it buy us a REAL goalkeeper.

I really hope get Cahill, he’s so much better. If Wenger has the reported 40 mill, then why can’t he pay a little more for a top class defenceman? Gervinho 15 mill at the most leaves us with 25, who else would we really need to sign? Obviously a bonus would be charlie adam, but if we keep nasri and cesc, all we need to do is find a left back, and Wenger has a great eye for left backs, wasn’t he one himself?

Ive read 6’2 on officail sites and but others say he’s 6’5.
