Arsenal MUST replace Diaby in January

Posted on December 14, 2012 by Bob

I think it is time for the Arsenal manager and the fans to face facts and accept that Abou Diaby will never be available to play. That way, if he can manage a few games here or there it will be a bonus, but we cannot rely on him. It’s no fault of his own, or even of the medical staff at Arsenal, apparently, but the French midfielder has some problem which means he cannot play regularly as it affects his muscles and leads to further injury.

Cast your minds back, Gooners, to the end of September. We all had a rosy glow, because we had stopped worrying about why Arsene Wenger had not bought the defensive midfielder we had all been waiting for. We didn’t need anyone, because Diaby was awesome and was the perfect link between Arteta and Cazorla.

We were flying, easily beating Liverpool, Southampton and Coventry, while outplaying Man City at the Etihad. Then high flying Chelsea came to the Emirates, during the game Diaby went off and we crumbled. Since then, the midfield and subsequently the whole team has suffered.

Wenger announced today that Diaby has got no chance of appearing again before Christmas, and does not seem to have any clear idea when he will be able to play again. It’s a huge blow for Arsenal and for Diaby himself, but we cannot wait for him. He could have been as good, if not better, than Viera and Yaya Toure but it is not going to happen.

It’s no use crying over spilt milk, the best thing to do is go to the shop and buy some more milk, or you are going to have to do without. Diaby may be able to play some games, like Ledley King did for the Spuds, but when his contract ends we should say thanks and goodbye. It will be hard to find anyone with his talent, but Wenger has got to try.

  5. vp says:

Lady Bracewell Smith has just underpinned our worst suspensions. If the sale of our best assets, the lack of investment and shareholder involvement, isn’t reason enough to call for realignment to the club’s strategy- Then what is!

We have an owner who cares nothing for the sport, who visits the country every month to attend board meetings, but yet hardly ever comes to a game. His lack of involvement is more motivated by evading the accountability for strategic decisions, then it is to allow the club to operate more freely.

Put profit to one side and remind yourselves of a football club’s number one fiduciary duty -to serve public interest. To serve those who enable the organization to exercise its license to exist, us the fans. Profit is a purpose by which this objective is fulfilled and absolutely critical, no question. However, it becomes self defeating if it comes at the expense of the underlying objective which for a football club is delivering success on the football pitch. Selling our best players year after year and not reinvesting the money is one such example.

I have never felt so detached from the club, and have lost my voice, I think we all have. We dare not question the establishment as we made feel ungrateful and financially naïve for doing so. We dare not question why our CEO has been remunerated for delivering a £30million operating loss or why our INVESTOR cannot temporarily loan some of the forthcoming sponsorship money to us, despite having recently just purchased an £80mill ranch.

We are continually reassured that we are the path to financial superiority and that spending more money than we currently do will make us a going concern threat like Rangers, Malaga and etc. This is another political maneuver by the board and deliberate scare mongering to allow the actors up top to pursue personal agenda and deliver long term shareholder value. Have we ever asked the club to go out there and spend recklessly? The fact that they continue to revert to such extreme examples to justify their decisions is nothing short of disrespectful and patronizing.

There’s a fine line between prudence and total risk avoidance, with the latter falling into the category of anti growth. We have turned into a risk free investment to guarantee risk free long term shareholder value, with specific rewards for those who aspire to achieve this (CEO & Board). Furthermore, the foundation of our long term strategy is based on factors outside our control, like the FFP coming into force, in which time the people at the top are going to get rich regardless.

To sum up , Their seems to be overwhelming evidence to suggest that the club is not being run to its capacity, and many reasons to doubt the integrity and true motivations behind those who own and control it. We may not be the gatekeepers of the football club in the legal sense, but make no mistake about in substance we are. We have an important role to play and a duty of care to act and it’s about time we did.

  10. dalinho says:

Yes arsenal can’t afford big stars at the moment, only because what other teams do is to mark up a 20-25mil player to 35mil(Hazard).

But that doesn’t mean we can compete, it is like Wenger said, if we buy well, it’ll be fine.

BUT, and a BIG ONE. Has Arsene Wenger REALLY bought the right players?

just look at the past 3 years transfer ins:
    https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=piruthZqw9z7KPOQuZ0P6Gg

since 2010-11 season, we’ve got 23 players in. 10 of these are reserve players:
    1)Philip Roberts
    2)Kyle Ebecilio
    3)Ryo Miyaichi
    4)Serge Gnabry
    5)Jon Miquel Toral
    6)Leander Siemann
    7)Hector Bellerin
    8)Kristoffer Olsson
    9)Joel Campbell
    10)Thomas Eisfeld

the rest 13 are all supposedly 1st team, including squillaci, chamakh, Park, Santos, all of which futures at Arsenal are quite over.
take these 4 out of the 13, we have 9 players playing in the 1st team, which includes:
Arteta, Koscielny, Mert, Girvinho, OX, jenkinson, Podolski Giroud and Cazorla.

Arteta cazorla is now our core midfield. Koscielny mert is crucial to defense.
jenkinson, while significantly improved still a sub.
    girvinho has been appalling
Ox is good but inexperienced. This season we also see him defend more than attk just like podolski. and that’s because we have no midfield boss that does no nonsense defending.
Giroud is looking better each game, but it’s hard to judge him now when the whole team is in shambles.

so if we do the math,
    10 reserve players: 2,430,500m
    4 deadwood: 12,000,000m
    4 core players(cazorla, arteta, mert, koscielny):42,700,000m
    5 yet to be proven:44,070,000m

now last 3 years 3 biggest names gone are nasri, cesc, Van Persie.
that’s total of 77,700,000m for those 3 alone.

add the 4 core players and the 5 yet to be proven and that’s the all the new 1st team players.
86,770,000m invested in the current 1st team in the last 3 years, and we’re not doing 1/2 as good as we were with 3 players worth 77,700,000m in the 1st team.
that’s a 9,070,000m difference MORE value before we sold those 3.
take Koscielny’s transfer fee away from the difference since he came in and played with cesc Vp and nasri for 1 year.
that’s 9,070,000m -9,700,000m = -630,000k less valuable than we were 3 years ago in terms 1st team only.

Yet the -630,000k difference is not proportionally translated into our decline…

On paper, yeah 3 years ago no trophy, 3 years after same.
But any football fan would see that Arsenal isn’t playing even 1/2 as good football as they were 3 years ago.

We look like we’re 63,000,000m worse in terms of player quality now. And that is what I mean by getting the right players.

u can reinvest in cheaper players and do a sell 1 for 3, as long as the 3 adds up to be the 1.
But we don’t look anything like a coherent team, and still have roles to be filled.

C’mon Arsene, are you kidding me?

You hit the nail on the head mate. Yes Diaby is probably one of the most talented players and Arsenal was a better team when he was playing. I think Arsenal should have bought a replacement for him last summer because it was blatantly obvious he will not last long without another injury. There is still time to buy a replacement this transfer window but I very much doubt will be in his calibre. We also need a replacement for Santos!!

  13. dalinho says:

Our club can afford good quality players, what we and every other club, except Man City and Chelshea, cannot afford is second quality ‘dross’ who when they fail cannot be sold on elsewhere.
They stay on the bench, receive huge salaries for doing nothing. No one wants them on their salaries and they will not drop their wage demands to play elsewhere hence stalemate.
Chamakh, Arshavin (do not excuse him he cannot hack it in the Premier league),Santos (why did we but him?),Bendtner, Squillaci and others.
The purchase of these players and the improvement of players contracts are all approved by Arsene. He is the manager for the players on the field and new players coming in. He faled to improve the team when Thierry was sold, why for such a small amount, and has continued to let the standard of the first team fall every year since.
He is such a great manager that he cannot see that our biggest failing in the last 6 years has been the defense and still cannot bear to pay for a good international goalkeeper.
He has let our 7 seven best players leave in the last 4 years and replaced them with nothing or substandard panic buys(Santi excluded).
Forget the board they would not deny Arsene anything he would ask for, any other major club would have ditched him 3 years ago when his ‘young player’ experiment failed.
The club needs and deserves a new start starting with a new manager.

    Sell chamakh,bendtner and park= 13mil (wages combined =162k/week)
    Replace with llorente free wages = 80-90k max. U have 13mil 3.5mil wages saved= 16mil.
    Sell arshavin 5-6mil (90k wages) replace with holtby free.wages = 40k/week… 5mil saved + 2.4mil wages saved = 7.4 million
    Sell djorou,n release squillaci = 6million (wages combined = 120k/week)
    Replace with yanga-mbiwa 6million.wages = 50k/week. 2.7 million wages saved.
    Sell santos 4million wages = 60k/week replace with j.williems 3mil wages =25k/week 1million saved + 1.6xmil wages saved=2.6mil
Sell fabainski 3mil wages = 50k replace with landreau free wages 50k.3million saved
In total we have 32million saved from selling deadwood and replacing with better quality.

Loan out olsson, toral and the likes
Bring back miyaichi, campbell, afobe, wellington Ramsey, eisfeld, gnabry, meade for the cup games.

    Now ADD to the squad. 32mil + the supposed 70mil = 102mil
    Renew contracts sagna + walcott = 8million a year
    Buy isco 17million
    Wanyama 10million
    Zaha 10million

well well well. so many hindsight biases here. I thoroughly remember 3-4 seasons back everyone is saying that diaby is useless and won’t come good for arsenal and yet everyone now say he is class act. same thing happened with santos when he started well with arsenal and scored a few goals. Everyone said that he is another gem found by Wenger. people people people.. not saying you are wrong to give your idea, but stop saying that “you knew it all along” about certain players. In fact, NO ONE can predict anything whether a player will come good or not. So, reserve your judgement till the end of the season and stop saying we will be better with usmanov or we would not be in this position if we got this player and that player. NO ONE will know whether that will actually happen. We can buy Neymar and he might be a bad signing. All we can do now is to continue to support the team and evaluate again when the season comes to an end

  37. First, Wenger must understand that Arsenal is not his. He never started it and will leave it. He has made us suffer greatly and become a laughing stock, by making our beloved club lose games for fun! From losing 8-2 to United, to being beaten by Bradford! All this is down to the fact that the manager has chosen to manage the club like his home, his family, where he chooses to buy food or not to buy it.

It was a grave mistake, indeed criminal for Wenger to choose to not buy a defensive midfielder after he let go of Song. It is true that Song was no longer a defensive midfielder, but he was always available for selection, yet Diaby, preferred to stay by Wenger, hardly plays and has spent the biggest chunk of his six-year stay at Arsenal on the treatment table! Why did Wenger refuse to buy a player with an injury-free record? Was it because he wanted his bosses to praise him for saving them the lots of money he would have spent on buying a replacement? Well, he’s got the praises he wanted from his bosses, and ruined his team! POOR, POOR, POOR, POOR WENGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the same Wenger who sold Patrick Vieira to Juventus and pinned all his hopes on Baptista, who eventually snubbed him to join Real Madrid, and, you know what happened? Well, if you’ve forgotten, HE DIDN’T BUY ANY! Wise decision? Certainly not! Now look what our team has become! A mediocre team, respected by no other, which is why even small teams like Hull City, Wigan, Westbrom, etc came to the Emirates and have a real go at us believing they have a chance, and they got it! A team with a small team mentality, who go to Aston Villa and substitute a striker for a defensive midfielder, to settle for a point!!!!!!!
A team who lead Fulham 2-0 and only survive by the grace of God to draw 3-3!!!!

I’m starting to think that maybe Wenger is a Frenchman but with African connections. Don’t get me wrong fellow Africans, but I think you’ll agree with me that here in Africa, most leaders cling to power even to the point of death, no matter what, yet it would be wise if they stepped aside for others. Remember what happened in the Ivory Coast?

What I’m saying is that Mr. Wenger should be wise enough to understand that he has outlived his stay, and call time to his Arsenal career. The man is finished! He can no longer inspire his team to fight! His judgement is poor. He took off Chamberlain, the best player against United and brought on Arshavin who lost the ball that resulted in United’s winner! He names Gervinho as striker, who misses horribly at Bradford, when there’s Podolski on the same pitch, who he instructs to play on the wing! He picks Gervinho, who has never complained of not being played there, ahead of Walcott who has become disillusioned and now we are on the verge of losing him!

He buys players, plays them in wrong positions or adopts systems that don’t favor them, or doesn’t play them at all and destroys them. Arshavin, Chamakh are good examples, while players like Santos, Squillaci and Gervinho should never have been signed at all! He plays with the same formation against United, City, Chelsea, Bradford, Wigan, etc! He doesn’t makes substitutions until the 62nd minute because that would go against his rule book!

TO HELL WITH WENGER. YOU HAVE DONE WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, BUT, MIND YOU, NO ONE STAYS AT THE TOP FOREVER AND YOU’RE NOT AN EXCEPTION. LEAVE OUR ARSENAL ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Invincibles nice (1) says:

You cant compare Diaby with Vieira, he is comparable with Toure but nothing like Vieira unless your comparing there height. Vieiras arrival epitomized eveyones thoughts on what a holding player should be.

Before Vieira a roy keane mould was what people where scouting, then PV4 changed all that and showed people that you need to be able to pass, you need a beast who can mix from physical to flowing football, and who never goes missing throughout, is the focal point of defence aswell as attack when needed, an athlete who gallops from one end to the other.

Diaby on his best day couldnt control a midfield battle in the way that Vieira did, not even close considering the brick wall players of Vieiras day. Diaby is a female mouse compared to this man.

Diaby is tricky, good with his feet for a man of his size.
Going forward he does make up good ground, but going the other way he doesnt have near the same enthusiasm.
Rarely makes sliding tackles whereas PV4 had telescopic sliding challenges.
Diabys not even a holding player that first and foremost protects the defence.

Has anyone noticed on Arsenal.com, when they reveal team news, Diaby’s expected time away is never listed or stated? You always see “unknown date” next to his name. To be honest, even though Frimpong’s still green, he’s the steel we need rather than Ramsey who keeps losing the ball. Maybe his short loan deal is to get him match fit to play in Diaby’s role for the whole season. I don’t know, but one thing’s for sure though, we really need a proper DM.

Someone here said that we needed him !!!!
And superlatively you are talking about deadwood.

Despite his indeniable qualities, Diaby is the number deadwood on the list… £55.000 a week and 23 games in 3 years !!!!!!!!!!

Are we going to keep doing this??? (Squillaci, Diaby, Djourou…. )When has Arsenla become a charity????

Let’s be serious and let’s get players ready to be there when we need them… If Diaby was playing for Man U, he would have been offloaded long time ago… But at Arsenal, it is a ” family club ” and we don’t mind keeping players on the payroll.

Funny enough, Wenger and Gazidis are always talking about sustanaibility… !!! What a joke!!!

We have a wage mass not even playing anymore and worth around £10 to 15 millions a year…!!!

That’s fine as it seems that Arsenal fans don’t mind paying forr expensive seats.. Fools !!!

Time to get rid of the burden and bring some heroes. We have to many zeros sneezing in the corridor of the Emirates.

  47. Top Gunner says:

Diaby should be accompanied by the following deadwood:
    Ramsey
    Squillaci
    Djourou
    Chamakh
    Santos
    Bendtner

Unless Arsenal replace the above mentioned it will be difficult to win games, because these deadwood are being paid huge salaries for not making it to substitution bench

diame 25 with epl knowledge and £3.5m release clause in january. if a better player can not be brought or found he has has to be signed.
a left back also i would love and i mean love to see baines in an arsenal shirt, but that is a dream.

i think gibbs needs to be an understudy for a year so he can do work in the gym to help his injury record and bulk up a bit.

also a real out and out winger, at the risk of upsetting people nani would be ideal in my opinion. oh and also a second striker my choice would be benteke or kjh.

Why is it a replacement to sign someone? Just sign a player, it doesn’t mean Arsenal have to get rid of someone.

Diaby is 26. He still has time. We shouldn’t give up on him just yet.
