Arsenal need Walcott and Gervinho to start scoring to become truly great

Posted on December 11, 2011 by admin

With 18 goals this season, 14 in the premier league alone, Robin Van Persie is arguably the best offensive footballer currently playing in Britain. His versatility can be seen in his goals where they are scored from set pieces, headers and both his magical feet. He has scored close to half of Arsenal’s league goals so far and is on his way to break the record of most goals scored in a calendar year.

However, Arsenal must not rely on their inspirational skipper as their only source of goals. Every team should always have a backup plan to their main approach in every game. Arsenal are no exception. We must find a source of goals apart from solely on VanPersie to find the net time and time again.

There a couple of positives from the Wigan game where it shows Arsenal can find goals from long ranged efforts (Arteta) and from headers in set pieces (Vermaelen). If Arsenal run out of ideas, we could always look to set pieces and long ranged goals.

I feel our strongest threat apart from the flying Dutchman would be from our flanks. Besides pace, dribbling skills and technical ability, Theo Walcott and Gervinho can actually be potential goal scoring threats for the gunners. They have got to step up on their game in order to reduce the pressure placed on Van Persie.

Gervinho has hit 18 goals each season in his 2 seasons at Lille. It shows that the Ivorian has what it takes and knows how to finish chances. Though he has been squandering quite a few sitters so far this season, his goalscoring record can certainly improve and it can be seen that he is rather clinical in front of goal (Blackburn and Wigan) and knows what he is doing.

Theo Walcott’s goalscoring ability should never have been doubted from the start. His pace can allow him to be in very favourable positions to find the net time and time again and with improved finishing touches, Theo may turn out to be a very prolific goal scorer and help Van Persie in eading the Arsenal offense.

If Walcott and Gervinho can start banging in the goals, Arsenal would undoubtedly have one of the strongest front three in the footballing world, never mind the premier league.

If Gervinho and Walcott start score and score, Arsenal will surely be the most attacking football team in Europe. With Vp as the target man, we can produce some kind of 100 goals a season which is awesome.Up Gunners!!!

  7. Aussie Jack says:

Gervinho and Walcott are wingers who can occasionally cut inside but as consistent strikers I have my doubts. Give van Persie a `rotation` partner and they`ll provide the ammunition.

  8. Robert says:

the problem is Ramsey, whereas he is trying(he is abit slow & less creative) hence we need a versatile central midfielder & everything will start working well Theo & Gervihno will be scoring tons of goals . As long as that focal point is lacking we are in trouble or not out of the woods yet.

    song – 1 goal, 5 assists
    ramsey – 1 goal, 4 assists
    arteta – 3 goals, 1 assist

  18. Andrew says:

I like Ramsey but lately he looks very tired, and I think he is part of the problem at the moment. RVP likes to drop deep or drift onto the flanks, so we need a central midfielder to make a decent run into the box. Ramsey does occasionally do this, but even when he does he often hesitates in front of goal. Walcott and Gervinho need to work on picking the right option, they shoot when they should pass, and pass when they should shoot. If any of these 3 hit some form though and get on a good run expect Arsenal to become very hard to beat.

Hello fellow gooners. Let’s not forget whose supplying RVP to score, it’s Theo and Gervinho. People are going to criticise Gervinho’s finishing, but I believe that will come if he keeps getting in to the positions he’s finding himself in. Like yesterday, he would have scored if it wasn’t for a good save from Tim Howard. Elz. Gooner till I die.

our attack will score plenty of goals, we just need that spark in the middle, we use to hav fab who would pull all the strings, its a pity we lost him, anyway arteta is doing a great job, hes a fighter, a real winner and he has that workman like attitude, im very impressed with him, he defends and he attacks, song has always been impressive for me, people have always slated him saying hes poor and makes poor tackles and gives away freekicks in dangerous positions etc, but song is an unsung hero for me, 1 example of how important song is, last year 1st leg against barce in the cl, song played and we looked resilient and very solid, barce struggled to score against us, second leg song didnt play and i believe we were under far too much pressure, especially the defence, we still had a chance but the ref killed us with that van persie sending off, out of the 3 midfielders ramsey is the dissapointing one for me, hes inconsistant but then maybe thats down his young age and inexperience, some games he plays really well and some not so good, hopefully when wilshere returns then maybe that will UP ramsey’s game. UP GUNNERZ

  26. S.H says:

Some might disagree, but my personal view of Gervinho is he needs to work on his dribbling and finishing. Scoring the amount of goals for Lille doesn’t mean he’ll do the same in the EPl where the defence and tackling is harder and rougher.

Sometimes he looks like he’s about to trip over the ball rather than control it to settle our nerves. Sometimes he lacks that sharpness in terms of delivering the accurate pass to RVP, regardless of his 5 assists this year, he may well have gotten 10 if the preciseness was there. He advertises his passes too much I think and the defence is able to read it.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m a fan of Gervinho and was really happy when we signed him. He’ll improve over the next year, but at the moment he hasn’t reached the skill levels of our previous left wingers in Overmars or Pires.

As for Walcott, man he has improved his crossing game and vision immensely. i think his dilemma now is when he gets on a break, he’ll rather look for RVP (which is understandable considering the Dutchman’s form)than take the shot himself. We saw that twice in the Everton game. overall our troops will only get better and better.

Let’s sign a creative midfielder to really feed our strike force with more goal opportunities.

Arsenal has to give more freedom to Arshavin, so he can play in the middle, he has ability to move in the box and he can for sure be the best supplier of passes to RVP. He still has great touch and sence of when to make that pass. Wenger, please keep him ( Arshavin) at Arsenal so he can assasin Man City and others!

    @ dee

Yeah I agree with you on Arshavin. Most fans have lost their faith but when he’s given freedom, he can be menacing and predatory-like, always looking dangerous. I do understand why many want him to leave, mainly due to his lack of defence from having short legs (LOL), but I was a fan of Arshavin even when he was playing for Zenit St Petersburg. Remember that game against liverpool that ended 4-4 with the Russian bagging 4? WOW

At the end of the day, he’s a forward and predominantly paid to score not to defend. Common sense right?

Having said that, regardless of being an Arshavin fan, I’m a bigger Gunners fan so if it is best for the team to release him, then do it. I do agree that we can buy forawrds that score and play defence so if the Russian leaves, so be it, but I’d miss him. MY Arshavin shirt would definitely miss me wearing it ever again.

when willshire is back and if we sign gotze we will create a ton more chances and therefore a tun more goals and by then gervihino will be more used to the English game and should do better and we be better defensibly with gibbs and sagna back who can also push forward and help create more chances and therefore more goals.

Yeh, I have been waiting for such a write up. If Gerv and Walcott start scoring we would indeed become almost unbeatable. Especially as our back line is getting better every game. But peeps we have to also comment about Ramsey, some fans have rated him high. But for me he is average. Maybe in a smaller club his game would have been rated fantastic. He is a bit slow and misses a lot of scoring opportunities.
