Arsenal offer trial to emergency left-back
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he desperately needs a short-term loan of a left-back to get the club through January, but in one of the weirdest Arsenal transfer rumours ever it seems he has offered a trial to the Oman international Saad al-Mukhaini.
The 24 year-old currently plies his trade in the Omani second division but has made 23 appearances for his country, and The Times reported: “The left back, capped 25 times by the Arab nation, is due to arrive at the club this week for a two-day trial. If Wenger decides to offer him a deal, al-Mukhaini would become only the second Omani to play in the Barclays Premier League, after Ali Al Habsi, the Wigan Athletic goalkeeper.”
Arsenal fans have seen the club linked with illustrious names like Taye Taiwo, Wayne Bridge and Aly Cissoko as possible arrivals as cover for Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs, but it would be little surprise if Wenger opted for this totally unknown Omani to get him out of a fix for a couple of years.
To be honest I would rather that Wenger played Marouane Chamakh as an emergency left-back that take a chance on Al-Makhaini, just as long as he doesn’t try using Andrei Arshavin!

This may seem odd, but bare with me. Man u often play Valencia, a winger, at right back. I watch all of the u-21 England matches to watch the ox, and the kid has some real defensive instincts. Perhaps we could use him until djourou or sagna is back? Keep coquelin at left until Gibbs is back?

You guys haven’t even seen this bloke play……..how could anyone with half a brain write him off???
It is possible there’s a valid reason he’s in second division.
A trial costs nothing so what exactly is the issue?
One of our scouts must see something in him.
It’s too easy for you just to blame Wenger though.

Scott is wrong. Rather, it is perfectly reasonable for fans to be skeptical of the signing of a player from a nation not known for its quality of players, and who is currently playing in a division not known for its quality. I may have been more willing to have “blind” faith in Wenger had we been winning, or at least in the running for a title these last few years…still love Le Coach, but no-one should consider his decision beyond reproach, particularly as he obviously is acting under the constraints of shareholders who place profits above results

Remember Koscielny only played in Div 2 of the French Ligue 2 years ago and look at him now. He’s one of our best and consistent players at the moment. Too many fans judged Kozzie the same way when he first joined Arsenal. Give Saad al-Mukhaini and our scouts the respect they deserve. Wenger is not to blame for giving a potentially good player a chance to prove himself. I don’t see why we can’t trial any unknown player who could eventually prove to be world class. We were all complaining when he signed Pires and Vieira. They both became legendary at our club so go figure!
@ Scott
Well said mate
@ henry
Well Al Habsi is from Oman too and he’s a great goalkeeper. So your ignorant judgement can’t be deemed as fair or just. FYI there are good and poor players in every league. What can you say about Neymar who plays in the Brazilian League, a competition not as strong as many European leagues? I mean c’mon wake up to yourself!

Neymar was Brazilian. If we signed a Brazilian from the second league I would be less skeptical than signing an Omanian from second league. I made no complaint when we signed Santos..
Anyway apparently according to you it is a heresy to even question what Wenger does. Maybe you shouldn’t bother writing in because we know that your view = whatever teh club view is, and leave this site for fans who are wiling to politely discuss their view of the merits of a signing.

This is crazy. We do not need another maybe player who might come good in a couple of years. We need an experienced player (yes, like Bridge) for a limited period – NOW.
Otherwise we could accept that Gibbs may never make it and buy someone good for keeps ?

A fan is somebody who loves the Arsenal FC, and supports actions that are in the best interests of the club. That is me.
But you guys who say we should dare not question a signing are askign for the blind and unquestioning faith that attaches to some religions.
Unquestioning loyal fans are wonderful for the shareholders, who know that these fans will never complain no matter that the club signs cheap and ordinary players. True fans voice their opinions as to what is in the best interests of the club.
Anyway this guy will never get a strat but you guys will have moved on and forgotten your silly protests today. And if this guy does gets a start with AFC I will cut my favourite appendage off and send it to dailyarsenal.com.mark my words

@henry he isnt a signing yet is he? Hes coming on trial and the whole point of a trial is to give the player an opportunity to prove himself. Think youve got alterior motives. Wenger hasnt done anything wrong to offer a player a trial that his scouting network has told him has potential. You obviously just want to slate wenger and your obviously not looking at arsenals best interests. Our tranfer policy has been the same for years, and weve created legends from it. Asking that the club change its philosophy when its clearly been successful isnt in arsenals best interests

Its a trial and I think we can all agree that Wenger is the best person at Arsenal FC to judge a player. Let the lad come in and if he shows the ability and desire to play for the Arsenal then for me it does not matter what league or country he came from aslong as he puts a good shift in then thats all fans can ask for. Koscielny, Jenkinson both came from 2nd/3rd division sides respectively & for me they have always tried their best so we should as supporters support those players who give 100% effort and commitment to the team cause! Up the Gooners and Keep the faith in Wenger whos trying his best for the club.

@ Dial Square
I agree with you in respect of needing someone who can make an immediate impact. My blog was to merely point out that Saad al-Mukhaini deserves a chance to trial and prove himself like any other player, regardless of background or competition he currently plays in. We can’t judge someone if we don’t give him a chance. Yes Koscielny went through the trials and tribulations over a year’s course, but it’s made him stronger and smarter as a player. Keep in mind that every player is different in terms of the time they take to adjust. It might’ve taken Kozzie over a year, but who’s to say Saad al-Mukhaini can’t adapt quicker? It all comes down to the player’s progression and belief in himself. We also have to consider the risk factors in signing Wayne Bridge being over 30 and not playing consistent football. Who’s to know how good or bad he’ll be for Arsenal? It’s the same risk assessment for any player no matter how much they’re worth or how much experience they have. Does Torres and Carroll ring a bell? This is why I leave it to Wenger and his scouts to decide because they are the most qualified for the job. Our job as fans is to support our team and in doing so, supporting those who are responsible to make crucial decisions. Why? Because they know best, not us!
@henry
I respect your opinion as I do everyone elses whether I agree with them or not. This is a forum for fans to have their say so I ask that you can show respect to all others in here giving their own thoughts. Trying to form a group of people who supposedly agree with you, against others is just childish and pointless. In fact it’s tasteless like Fergie’s chewing gum. I welcome your feedback anytime if you can maturely state your point without the need to slander others.

I agree to play nice.
But you “Because they know best, not us!” is off the mark.
What some of us fans are saying is “please not another low cost/ bargain signing”. Because that decision by the club is NOT born out of knowing more than us (if it was I would agree with you) But rather we suspect and fear that the decision is born out of the shareholders wanting to maximise their return. And on that, it is ENTIRELY LEGIT for loyal fans, who buy the tickets and the merchandise to say that we want more of that money spent on STARS.
AND it is very harsh for you to suggest that those of us who dare suggest it should “wake up to ourselves”. Anyway I am done on this topic now. the mouse eats cat food but the cats bowl is broken

This will be a sure sign that Wenger has lost it.
He invests so much in junior players but never lets them play in the first team.
If he won’t buy a decent replacement i.e. vertoghen, bastos, Eboue, etc. Then he should bring in one of the kids he has spent so much money and time on to have a run. Miquel, Coquelin, Wellington, Botelho, Bartley and even Lansbury. He has a big squad he never uses and claims he believes in youth come transfer time so let’s see what he can achieve with a few of them in the team rather than buy some guy in the Omani second division?

Its a hit and miss for Wenger in my opinion. Some players he has signed in the past have been brilliant, others complete and utter rubbish. I’m still not convinced of Jenkinson either, he hadn’t really played enough games to prove himself. I will give this guy a chance, as we all should, but really what Wenger needs to do is scout a player and come to an agreement with the board, that this is our man and if he is really hot stuff, pay whatever the club will want for him. If you add up all the duds Wenger has bought, the cost of say 2 or 3 of those 3 duds add up to the cost of a proven quality player with immediate impact. Buying or even loaning unproven players all the time is too much of a gamble. But I understand Wenger in that we have too many defensive injuries right now for him to just fork out cash for a new one. Santos, Gibbs, Vermalaen, Sagna…quite a few defenders there. When they return, our loans will have moved on.But seriously Djouro and Squillaci have no place in Arsenal and need to be replaced.

yeah right. This is all bussiness.. First buy a player from korea n japan to make a good profit from selling jersey. Mission done. Next step the middle east.. Buy a few player from middle east to raise income from selling jersey.. Dont u guys see this plan.. If arsenal really looking for cheap emergency back up for fullback why need to go as far as oman. Dont we have youngster that really can cover that position for at least a month.? Or there is no other player in div 2 league in spain italy holland or other europe country can cover that position so we must find a player from oman? This is all about money man… I dont see the logic here. Many said we have best football academy but to find emergency back up why all this nonsense happend?

Theres a lot of discontent out there over a newspaper story. If we actually signed every player the papers say were in for we would have a squad of 100 players and need Man Citeh’s cash to pay them. I have no issue with Mr. Wenger giving any player a trial. He is always looking for something new and unheard of. If you look at the successess he has had with transfers you can name players like Petit, Viera, Overmars, Van Bronchorst, Lauren, Van Persie, Henry, Wiltord, Song, Gilberto….to name just a very few. All bought for comparitive peanuts. Okay he has had a few duds to in Senderous, Squillatchi, Jeffers, Pennant et al, but if you don’t by a ticket, you wont win the raffle. Arsenal manage the club so it is self suffcient. do we all remember Leeds, Portsmouth, Man Citeh of a few years back. All the clubs fell apart because the spending wasn’t managed. I like the fact that our club will be here for the next 125 years. If the big spending owners of Liverpool, Man U, Man Citeh, Spudlington Hotshites and Chavski decide that they have had enough, those clubs close with immediate effect.
With regard to share holders. I have a share and I cen tell you now, I do not get a dividend on it so comments about shareholders wnating the profit is totally misplaced. Always a gooner.

Guys, what exactly is the problem with the player? I have not seen him play so i wont reject him just because he comes from a country that is not known for its football. What matters is individual talent. I wont be surprised if the coach brings in a relatively unkown lb or rb to help fill the void. Santos got injured just as he was started to show what a quality player he is both defensively and on the offensive. How much did we know about Santos before he came to Arsenal?
Bring the guy from Oman or any other left back as long as we can get a good replacement who will also grow with the squad and add value in future.

He been an Omani, does not make him a poor player. What makes you think a good player can’t come out of Oman? Dwight Yorke was from trinidad & tobago, but he was a good player. Hleb was from Belarus, a country with low profiles of player yet he was a good midfielder. Same applies to Edin Dzenko, he is a good player. Goerge weah happens to be the only African to ever win wolrd footballer of the year, he his from Liberia. Who knows liberia as a footballing nation? Moreover; he his only come here for a trial, it has not been confirmed as a signing.
Why not let’s give him a trial? Who knows he may turn out to be another LK6?

i’m a MUTD fan, but wenger has the best eye for talent period….. wish we had similar scouts…

but for how long exactly should these players be given a chance, we’ve gone years without a trophy. I agree with most of you in what your saying but why not sign one big player and maybe a couple of unknown ones too? it will not only boost squad morale but it will also help us in depth whilst these new unproven players try to adapt, if they fail in doing so just sell them off, OR do what should be done and sign Cahill – Everton one. he has experience, or why not Baines he has the potential to cover what we have failed to replace for a very long time .. Ashley Cole (it hurts to say but he is world class and was such a big loss to us, if you disagree then fair enough I don’t expect everyone too.)
