Arsenal or Liverpool could face play-offs for 4th Champs League spot

Posted on February 15, 2010 by admin

The Premier League has launched a proposal that the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th teams in the Premiership will have to face post-season play-offs with a place in the Champions League at stake.

Although you can expect teams like Arsenal and Liverpool to reject the idea if it is put to the vote, the idea is likely to have massive support from the teams that are currently locked in mid-table.

The idea is to give other teams a chance to share in the spoils from top-class European football, instead of the usual Top Four domination of Champions League qualification.

The Man Utd coach Alex Ferguson has already announced his opposition to the idea, but the Premier League thinks that it will give the end of season games much more meaning for the clubs and fans, especially if their clubs are still in with a chance of finishing in the top seven.

Also the play-off games themselves, which are likely to be played at Wembley, could be real moneyspinners for the clubs involved.

A Premier League spokesman, David Conn said: “The play-offs would mean extra matches, which would be sold to pay-television and so generate more money for all clubs.”

The fourth-placed team is unlikely to be happy though, as it will mean more games at the end of the season, as well as the pre-season qualification rounds for the Champions League. This will drastically shorten the summer break, especially in World Cup years.

stupid idea. pile on the misery for the 4th placed team. in any case they have to play 2 estra games in the first week of the season, and now yu expect them to play 2 more games at the end.

    not a good idea.

  4. bc says:

I have been touting a similar idea for years but instead of 6th & 7th places giving the opportunities to FA & League Cup winners, making these competitions much more interesting. The 4th place team would go immediately to the final and will only involve a max of one extra game for them. The final could also mean the end of the community shield which would appease the big clubs. i.e. match 1 FA Cup winners at home to Lge Cup Winners
match 2 5th Place team at home to winners of match 1
match 3 4th Place team v winners of match 2 (at Wembley)

and if 4th place wins fa cup? do they still get a one off match where anything can happen? should stay the same best 4 over the season should be in champ league.

  6. GunnerJ says:

Y don’t the other teams try hard to get in the top four and not get the premier league to make it easier for them!

  7. Oluwanifemi 'femolem' says:

It’s equal to say that the effort of the bottom two amongst the top four is therefore not appreciated. As it is before,so it should be. For their position they worth an autormatic qualification to the champions league.
