Arsenal rumours – Arshavin and Chamakh out, Cavani or Podolski in?
It is being reported this morning that Arsene Wenger has put both Marouane Chamakh and Andrei Arshavin on the Arsenal transfer list in the hope of off-loading at least one (if not both) of his out-of-form players in January.
Arshavin is worried about losing his place in the Russia side at the Euros next summer if he is left on the bench, but every time he is given a chance to shine he looks completely out of his depth. The Mirror thinks that Wenger is set to give him the opportunity to return to his former club Zenit, thus freeing space in the Gunners squad for a real backup to Robin Van Persie.
Chamakh will be more difficult to move on as he is going to the African Cup of Nations but Wenger has clearly lost confidence in the Moroccan international.
The Mirror thinks that Wenger will immediately move for Lukas Podolski if a certain buyer surfaces for Arshavin, while the ex-Gunner Ian Wright reckons that Wenger should join the race to bring Edison Cavani to the Premier League.
Wrighty said: “First – and we have known this for ages – without a top-class attacker alongside Robin van Persie, Arsenal are only one injury away from everything blowing up in their faces.
“That’s why I think Arsene must bid for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani – El Matador – if there is any chance of tempting him from Italy next month.
“It will be more difficult now Napoli have reached the Champions League knockout stages, largely thanks to his performances in the group games.
“But plenty of other clubs around Europe haven’t given up the ghost, and I’d love to see Arsene in the mix as well.
“If, heaven forbid, anything did happen to RVP, you’d fear Arsenal would be stuffed. That’s a ridiculous pressure to carry on your shoulders every week.”
“Andrey Arshavin seems to be somewhere else at the moment. This is the guy who got four at Liverpool, hit the winner against Barcelona, but just isn’t doing the business,”
“When Marouane Chamakh comes off the bench you never really expect him to make the sort of impact you’d want.
“And although Gervinho looks good dribbling and running at people, again there haven’t been many goals to go with it.
That’s not something you could say about Cavani, and it’s no surprise that he has become one of the most wanted men in Europe.”
Wenger must know by now which Arsenal players are surplus to requirements right now, and Arshavin and Chamakh must be near the top of the list (alongside Squillaci and Almunia) so we can only hope that he does manage to sell some of the deadwood and start investing in some real quality players in January.
Arsenal don’t need to improve very much to challenge for a trophy in the second half of the season…..

This is good news. As much as i like Arshavin, I think his best years are behind him. Chamakh looks lackadaisical and is short of confidence.
Wenger needs to buy early to allow new players to train and familiarise themselves with the team. Easier said than done I guess as transfers rely on the agreement between 3 parties.
Let’s hope we get some more creative players.
RVP leaving is NOT AN OPTION!!!!

Why wait until Arshavin is bought? For god’s sake, why not use some of the money from the Fabregas & Nasri sales? 24 for Nasri and 35 for Fabregas and they won’t spend 20 on Podolski? Sometimes Arsenal can be so frustrating :-@
Hope Arshavin can leave soon. Chamakh is played less and thus I’m less bothered by him staying.

@Vertonghen!! The team you have prescribed is worth more than 100m shopping. Two defensive midfielders in Song and Mvilla is unreasonable. May be Baglia. Mvilla is overpriced already. At times I think fans want a trophy more than Wenger. That he admitted that we are not title contenders may make him not buy as expected in January.

Song and Ramsey really struggled vs Man City… very disappointing to say the least… would be good to offload Chamakh, Arshavin, Rosicky, Almunia and Squillaci during the winter transfer window, and reinvest in just two quality players… all about the quality, and not quantity… need a top class striker e.g. Podolski etc etc, and midfielder e.g. Gotze etc etc… Arsenal lost the game to Man City in the midfield… our midfielders looked second rate vs Man City’s… likewise, RvP did not have too much support in the final third… this game highlighted exactly where Arsenal weakness lies… two quality players, as mentioned, would remedy this

I agree with Aussie Dave, we need to get the business done early and let the rest fight it out over who ever whilst we introduce the newbies to our wonderful
club and ethos.
Podolski, as a proven international, definately signals intent, both to the fans and more importantly to RVP, and, along with another full back, a central defender and maybe some back up for Song we would have a very good looking squad. To my mind these additions would allow for the dead wood to be trimmed too.
If Arshavin does go it will be a shame as a prodigious talent will have failed, although I do feel the boss has played him out of position.

Getting rid of `deadwood` is not as easy as it seems. From where I stand I can imagine we`d have to pay someone to take them off our hands. Then there`s the legal issue and contracts. Oh! boy.

Podolski will be a perfect back up for RVP. He is not afraid to take on defenders and can shoot from any position on the pitch. But we all know that whenever there is a rumour about any player, Wenger backs off.
Wenger seems to be identifying talents around the world for other clubs to buy, a perfect example is Mata.
I wish the Gooners the best in the next half of the season.

Both Arshavin and Chamakh should leave. For Squalacci and Almunia, if no buyer shows up, lets loan them to the championship or give them pay-per-play contract.
However, our bringing in of a striker, Midfielder and a defender should not be a function of of the departure of these flops.

Chamakh is absolutely dreadful. Worst player we’ve ever had. I feel sorry for arshavin because AW hasn’t really given hum a chance to get back into form, when he is truly top class, as he has proven on many an occasion.
We have around 60million from nasri and fabregas. Add that to another 20 we should get for the rest of our transfers. That should buy us gotze(30m)/gourcuff(12m), podolski(12m)/cavani(35m), and if we get gourcuff and podolski, maybe get a decent full back or two? Or another backup striker, because podolski would want to start more often.

As a gooner, i always want players like AA23 or MC29 to approve and play well. but unfortunately it hasn’t been the case and they’ve got enough chances to show but failed. AA23′s goal against barca will always be special in our minds, but not doing in on a consistent basis is just not enough. the only potent strikers right now r obviously RVP n sometimes TW14 on his good days. Imagine the chance by AA23 late in the M city game, quality strike could have given us a draw. the last game really defines what we lack atm. personally i m happy with the GK n midfield. we r just 1 full back n 1 striker short.

@AYJ – I agree with you. Just two players like you mentioned in Gotze and Podolski or similar would be enough to provide support and competition to current midfielders and strikers, motivation to other squad members, and to also create a title winning Arsenal side. We are quite strong in defence now, ability wise. Our fullbacks will come back from injury soon, so we don’t especially need another defender right now. Maybe Arsene could recall Bartley to play at CB if another defender was urgently required. So yeah, a midfielder and striker the main concern right now.

Don’t care who thinks what ….
Both Arshavin & Chamakh look completely out of place now…they are now burden on Arsenal…
We played quite well against Man City… yes we might have lost but the intensity was very much there… the players gave it all..until these 2 players came off the bench….
Agreed that Walcott was not in his best elements on that day, but replacing him with Arshavin ???? He has been awful for the last 2 seasons…doesn’t have any confidence & more importantly it seems that despite numerous opportunities, he doesn’t gel well.
Chamakh is same story – short of confidence, he just can’t do anything right at this moment…
Don’t think many Gunners would be distraught to see both of them being sold & replaced by some other players…. there are planty.. not wasting time on speculation…hope AW plugs these 2 gaps…

AW has already said that AFC is better placed financially to buy players if need be.The need and urgency is there. We need a back up for RVP and it is not neccessary to wait until he sells the two.Buy immediately the transfer window opens to avoid last minute gamble. The two targets would be perfect.Go for them proffessor AW.

No way will we see Cavani, Champions League doesn’t kick off until Feb, he wouldn’t be able to play with Arsenal and would have to give it up this season after working so hard. No chance, unless we offer serious money and the club is forced to sell, which won’t happen.
Podolski seems to be where I’d put my money, but then Wenger came out and said no the other week. Maybe mind games but we’ll see.

The question is what is AW truely assuring us? his statement of we MAY bring in a defender and an attacker by Jan. leaves much 4 doubt recalling how he refused invest on players during summer after losing quality ones. The injuiries of insults we’re getiing from Man.U, liverpool and of lately Blackburn,Tottenham,Man.City are all due 2 AW’s wrong decision of playing possium while his counter parts are buying strenghtening up their teams with good players. Why shld our purchasing of Vertehogen, Podolski or Moussa Seydou etc be function AW’s selling of Chammack, Arshavin,Squillaci etc.He is the only one that knows the difficulty of getting good players and also the only one that can sell his best at slightest pressure. H.Redknapp has kept the likes of Bale,L.Modrick, A. Lenon, Van dar Vart etc. what are their wages compared 2 what Arsenal are giving to Chammack and & co. AW is expected to encourage RVP 2 stay by bringing in new good strikers against his winter-like purse stand. If he had brought in OX and Benayuo against Arshavin & Chammack their pace with Gervinho’s dribilling runs could have paved more ways 4 VP 2 do damage.AW pls sell or loan out but! U MUST BUY COME JANUARY, WE REVENGE ALL THESE DEFAETS AND WIN SOMETHING IT IS NOT OVER YET BUT IF U FAIL 2 TAKE THIS RIGHT STEP THEN IT SI OVER AND WE’LL KNOW THAT IT IS WHAT U PLANNED. UP GUNNERS1 WE SHALL WIN.

I’d have Cavani, Posolski & or Xherdan Shaqiri. Whatever the player, they’ve got to be better than the two lazy boys we’re gonna try (I say try with a lot of skepticism) and sell. I wonder what they’ll go for if they leave. Values have to be way down given their performances. Is it just me or do you think Arshavin has anyone to blame but himself!

the game against man city was typical arsenal..the way we keep possesion will always mean we will entertain but be far from winning…the fact that most of our assits come from song should be worring for the manager as the paints a bad piucture of our attaking midfielders.. our rivals attacking midfielders have more assists and arsenal need an that… we also need podolski or cavani without doubt as whenever chamack comes in it feels like the lask kicks of a dying horse, u dont expect anything from him…

I’d rather Wengee had replaced Gervinho with Chamberlain and left Walcott in the game. The Arshavin & Chamakh replacements were useless, didn’t add any quality to the game whatsoever. What we do need is a bloody striker(Podolski) and a defender probably a full back at that. I think we have enough quality in midfield and with Jack coming back we should be covered. Arshavin can’t give us anything anymore and Chamakh well, he’s a deadbeat at his position. Infact i think opposing defenders get happy whenever those two are brought on.

@AYJ I agree with u to an extent there.Only exception is I thought Song and Arteta were Brilliant. Our back was solid. I fully agree with you City out played us in the midfield. We could not get past the midfield with any ease and our keeper had to result to long balls as our players. We were broken down and forced back from the mid time and time again. Gerv was actually brill but Walcott had a terrible game unlike vs Chelsea, he was ordinary. If we had a good creative midfielder we would have won that game easily, we need someone who can dictate play in the midfield and pick out killer passes to our strikers. Poor VP worked had but there was no real chance created for him. We need a creative midfielder to return us to our tactical game. I would be glad if we got a creative mid and a striker, we’d be playing with ease and enjoying it

Sunday’s defeat felt like the end of the world, today it doesn’t feel a whole lot better. I said last week in a blog, that the last thing I wanted to see as our response to going behind, was to bring on Arshavin and Chamakh. Every time we have tried it before, it failed and it was doomed to fail again. Why? because neither of these players are good enough or have any personal confidence to achieve anything, in that game.I know that they were not given very long to change things but in previous games they couldn’t do it, why did we think that this time they could. We do have players who should have been given the chance, Chamberlain and Park but neither of them was on the bench. I’m sorry but there is no way I can understand this, surely 20 minutes on the field in a must win game, would not have ruined their future careers at the Arsenal. We must start giving Chamberlain and Park a chance and get a striker and a defender in during the “window”, if we are to maintain our challenge for trophies. Clearly Poldolski would be a favourite as he is not Cup Tied but there are other names out there who could come in, to stand alongside Robin.

Please Mr Wenger start playing OLC instead of Arshavin. He is not fit for purpose to put on an Arsenal jersey. He
lacks the desire to perform. Each time he comes on,he looks lost and looks like someone who is just waiting for
his contract to finish. Theo Walcott was right to sulk when he was taken off for Arshavin because he knew the
little Russian was a wrong option. Mr Wenger, you are a wonderful manager but I feel sometimes that your
judgement lets you down at times.
my first wish is get david dein back and arsenal hope to be invincible back n cn challenge the likes of barca or manu at the top rather than aiming jst to finished above spudsy.

In Theo, Chamberlain & Wilshere, Arsenal are moulding the core of the next English squad and hopefully that will get us some ref decisions.
We lose too many games on bad calls from refs and the penalty and offside ruling on the RVP goal are just some of the calls that have cost Arsenal and Wenger trophies over the past couple of seasons.
Till the refs’ perceprions of Arsenal are sorted, it doesnt matter who plays we will still lose the close games to the big teams this season alone Man City & Liverpool come to mind.

Lots of people on here posting their dream teams need to get it in their head that we simply are not gonna be able to sign Hazard… It will most likely be just Vertonghen and Podolski.
Although I wouldn’t mind seeing Taye Taiwo at the club. He just sits on the bench at Milan and he’s a brilliant Left Back. Fast, Strong and got a left foot cannon. Similar to Riise in his prime.
The only problem would be that Milan bought him in the summer so to get them to sell him after having him for such a short time would mean matching/raising the price they payed for him..

We just don’t have enough quality and expereince in depth. Other big clubs have two international players for each position and Arsenal over the last five years have found themselves short when injuries occur, which is all the time. I know Arsen knows best,,,,BUT, I would love it if he went crazy and spent big on quality rather then potential because we have enough potential at the club as it is. Two L/R backs, midfielder and a forward and get rid of some fringe players who just dont cut the mustard.
