Arsenal rumours Aug 23rd – Vieira, Van Der Vaart, Fabregas and Arshavin
The Sunday papers have usually have a few rumours worth chuckling at, and they haven’t let us down today. The Patrick Vieira saga looked over when the Frenchman publicly stated that he was going to stay at Inter for one more year, after he had a little chat with Jose Mourinho. But the Mirror reports Wenger as saying that he could still make a move for him.
He is quoted as saying: “I’m not yet moving for him. But until 31st August, it’s possible.”
Wenger did say that he was looking for one more defensive player, so perhaps he is holding Vieira in reserve if all his other targets fall through?
Our favourite Spanish gossip-rag AS is saying that Wenger is still interested in the unwanted Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart. They say that Madrid are looking for £12m for the Dutchman but Wenger is poised to bid a miserly £7m. They also say that Liverpool are considering a bid too. I suppose all this is possible but with no whispers from the English press i doubt it very much.
Naughty Andrey Arshavin has spoken out by saying that Arsenal need to buy more than just one defender. He thought that Arsenal needed to buy even before the summer started, so he is not going to have been happy that Wenger sold players instead.
He said in an interview in the Times: “No. We still have to buy. That’s my opinion,” he says.
“We shouldn’t set Everton as a benchmark, we should be looking at the top teams of Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona. We should buy first-class players, regardless of their age. We should buy the ones who should improve our game. The top teams have much bigger squads than ours and that is why we have to buy.” I think i’ll leave it to Arsene Wenger to comment on those statements!
The usual Fabregas story appears but for a change this one may actually be true! The word is that Arsenal are going to offer Cesc an improved contract worth £90,000 a week to try and head off any more speculation about Barcelona. That sounds promising, but lets be honest, he could earn twice that figure in Spain.
Also it looks like the Fab Man is going to join the ever-growing list of first-team injuries. Wenger played him yesterday despite the fact he was still carrying a knock, and he may now be paying the price.
“If it is a little pull, he will be out for three weeks, if it is just tightness, maybe he can get away for Wednesday,” said Wenger.
“In 48 hours, we will have a better view.”
Or perhaps he shouldn’t take a chance of playing him on Wednesday anyway. Give the lad a chance to recover Wenger, we don’t want to lose him long term now do we?

I’m not a fan of Arshavin opening his mouth too often. For a player who has struggled in the first couple of games and looked disinterested at times I think he should just focus on playing for now.
@ Gooner:
What are you talking about?. Andrew A has worked his A$$ off and created goals…Eduardo’s goal should have been his…
