Arsenal rumours Jan 3rd – Arshavin, Mertesacker and Fabregas (as usual!)
Arsenal and Liverpool are squaring up to battle it out over German centre-back Per Mertesacker.
The Metro are reporting that an £8.5 million offer has been tabled by Arsenal for the Werder Bremen favourite and German international and Liverpool are hot on their tail and keen to test Bremen’s resolve with a more attractive offer as Roy Hodgson seeks to make a more positive impression with the Scouse faithful.
Mertesacker was subject to prolonged interest from Arsenal in the summer as they found themselves painfully short of defenders resulting in the panic purchase of Sebastian Squillaci who has turned out to be quite disappointing despite all his experience of winning honours in Lyon and experience as a French international.
Fans are crying out for defensive re-enforcements despite Djourou and Koscielny developing what looks to be a very stable partnership (not losing a game) the only vulnerability looks to come from set pieces where it could be said the responsibility for the defensive organisation needs to come from the goalkeeper.
There are some other Arsenal transfer rumours kicking about, Andrey Arshavin is being linked with a move to Juventus in Football Italia, the fee being talked about is apparently £18 million. It seems silly to me that a transfer like this is even being discussed with the players seemingly comfortable at the club, the squad is settled and doing well.. why comprehend splitting the group? It is probably mischief making of the highest possible order.
That also goes for the re-emerging speculation around Cesc Fabregas and Barcelona’s interest in him. There are reports in Spain this morning claiming that the Catalans will launch a cash plus player deal, if I were you, discount them immediately. The one definitely true bit of Arsenal gossip is that Carlos Vela will be leaving in January, but that has already been covered in an earlier post….

Arshavin is pure class, genius, who cares if he sleeps for 85 minutes on the pitch when in the other 5 minutes, he can be a genius whom not even Nasri and Fabregas can match, and win us the games! Arsene is just resting Chamakh and Arshavin for the final push for the league! He is going to be highly important if we are to win the League!

GoonerGaz what are you talking about? Arshavin is the 8th best midifielder this season in the official premier league fantasy league with 91 points. Nasri has 94. You do not have a clue and do not deserve to support Arsenal. Arshavin has so much quality and Theo could learn a thing or two from him.

I agree with Hussain. Yeah Arshavin neglects his defensive duties somewhat. His strikes however are deadly, he can single handedly win matches, just like Nasri. Arshavin needs to stay. If anyone needs to go its Diaby or Denilson (or both). When Ramsey is back, I doubt they will ever see the pitch again.

i have doubts bout pers coming to arsenal, because, vermaleen will soon to be back in starting eleven, can’t see wenger wanting to risk upsetting the fast improving djourou,and koncielny,especially djourou who i think will improve even more with vermaleen next to him,as for arshavin,
i think, if a bid off 18million was offered it be very tempting for both arshavin and wenger to consider it,why?
because arshavin nearing 30 and wenger knows he won’t get same price for him say next season,and arshavin i think would like the challenge of italy, but i can’t see a skint juventus bidding that much money,and i would like see arshavin stay as frustrating as he is,at times, i do enjoy watching him play when he is flying.
as for kiss the badge i hope cesc stays till the end of season, but we all know he’s off ,so if barca do offer a realistic offer in the 35 to 40mill mark i can see a deal being done, but with cesc, staying till end off season.,
though it would’t at all suprise me if cesc stay at arsenal for another season,don’t know why i just got that feeling.

Per is a gud defender but we hav potentially another problem. More than 1 position needs back-up. Remember playing Song in CB, and Traore in LB? We run the same risk. Wenger would neva bring more than 1 player in now so the best solution is to kill 3 birds with the same stone… Jan Vertonghen would be the best signing 4 now to cover CB (obviously), or LB (due to Gibbs unfortunate start-stop ssn and Clichy’s hot-cold form), or in DM (Denilson…???!!!). For 10 to 12m and we r done 4 now. Anyway, am just thinking out loud, Wenger will upset us…. Again!!

Sell Arshavin if the 18m is true which I fear is not, best bit of business in ages if that went through. I have watched every game this season and last season and he is rubbish 90% of the time. Fabregas must stay and as for Silas’s comments of £50m+mascherano for him well that’s a comment from someone who knows nothing about Arsenal. Firstly Mascherano has only just moved there after leaving Liverpool, secondly he sulked and went on strike, thirdly Fabregas is worth more and lastly we don’t need another defensive midfielder. We certainly need a centre back and new goal keeper though. In Wenger I don’t trust that much when it comes to team selection!

The one that calls himself “ARSENAL LEGEND” for a young player Wilshire is one tough cookie and he takes tackles on himself in his stride eg the spuds in the cup game and as for Song hes one of the most solid players we’ve had in yrs with out him we wouldnt be where we are in cup and league.

hedgewire, I totally agree, Jack Wilshire is a quality player and has been for years. I tried to get odds on him being England captain 3 years ago and the bookies wouldn’t give odds on it. He is born in my town and lives in the town next to mine. We are all proud of him and I’m so happy he plays for Arsenal.

Only sell Arshavin if you can replace him with someone that can defend that position better and still give us a threat on the left. Who is available that can do both of those things? Charles N’Zogbia cuts us up pretty good every time we play Wigan (and Wigan looked terrible yesterday without him), but can he defend well enough to justify replacing Arshavin? Agbonlahor would be a great replacement. He has a great defensive work rate, as seen in that Chelsea game and Gabby is also versatile enough to play Striker.
When thinking about selling players you must take into account their age and Arshavin is almost 30. 18 million for a 30 year old player is a pretty good offer. Do you really think Arshavin’s style of play lends itself to a 30+ year old player? I think as he starts to lose his quickness, his effectiveness will drop dramatically and his defensive frailty will prove to be even more costly. If we can’t replace him with someone better we can’t get rid when we’re in the race.

Regarding the Cesc noise, i would take the deal if the player coming in is of Arsenal quality. I would like to see £30m+Romeu. We have the likes of Song, Wilshere, Ramsey, Nasri, Diaby, Denilson, Lansbury, Rosicky and Frimpong already at the club and we need some depth to cover injuries and all 4 competitions we are always in. 2nd string midfield of Frimpong, Romeu, Denilson, Lansbury is pretty strong! Keeping the likes of Song, Wilshere, Ramsey, Diaby, Nasri, Rosicky all fresh for the 1st team! With the cash bring in Vertonghen and V.derWiel from Ajax to strengthen the defense! We would have one of the strongest squads in Europe!

I rearly don`t know what are you guys talking about Arshavin is ok. The players that need to be sent away from arsenal are Denilson, Bedner, alumian, Diaby and vela. Arshavin is better than all of them. A kind of runs that Arshavin do is better than Bedner`s . Whether Vermale comes back or not we need more defenders you never know . Remember we sold 5 defenders and we only bought 2 . Bring in more midfield 1 or 2 it is still ok but they must be the good ones

He is brilliant for his age and will one day be an amazing first choice England squad player so for me you have absolutely no idea what you saying. As for Arshavin think he does drift in and out of games but still very good. Vela needs to go out on loan and get playing time, Bolton would be good and also so think Djourou has come of age. I think our time is’nt far away now. Bring on City.

Sell arshavin (18 mil is a steal), he’s lazy and gets pushed off the ball like a little girl. Honestly, whenever he plays I feel like were playing with a man down. Plus, his best years are behind him and he wont be getting any younger. If we can get 18 mil for him we can pick up eden hazard.

Arshavin for 16 mil is beyond a sell its a have and give the doe asap offer, arsne will never get a better offer, i think hes a top class typical arsenal playing style player, and he scores goals, hes gradually slowing down, and weakening, he will always be a good player and has helped arsenal in loads of games, still has an eye for a goal but with him slowing down and a 16 million offer there must be tolder in charge at juv, vela is going on loan because he needs to play because arsne said they have to many strikers and with us in the title race there is no chance he is going to play because he is not at the same level as chamack & van persie, this defender i keep hearing rumours about sounds pretty good and sounds like an arsenal player, we need a decent defender, we need to face is that kosniensly whatever his name is was a bad buy in my opinioun, he isnt a bad player but arsenal could of got sombody better with the money they spent on him, but it is his first season he may impove, the goalkeeper fabianski needs to be gone, he is useless, but then again i still beleive with the defending this season even if arsenal had a world class keeper in the goal instead of fabianski, i still reckon arsenal wouldnt be too better off in the league then they are now, but he is too poor and not up to arsenals level of exspectations, we need to win somthing this year ! and with him in goal and the defending going on like it is, we wil struggle, we can do it but with arsenal we always get disapointed around this time march april with bad results as-per-usual. as for fabregas he is a very exciting player to watch and i would love him at arsenal next season but it looks like he is going to go, he was the heart of arsenal and to me was going on to become an arsenal legend but with him possabily leaving arsenal this early he will be foggten by next season, with nasri at his form fabregas will not be missed too much by next christmas, but they need top exsperianced player to come in with the money they get from barca if not a player swap, we cant have kids playing against men for next 10 years and arsenal are getting closer and closer, we need to back our team, with chamack scoring, van persie back and looking good, nasri improving and becoming world class, fabregas just the way he is, vamerlen if he decides to come back this year, walcott not looking to bad on sub with them quick feet and fast runs in the last 15 mins, if we win tomorrow, and mantain this form and keep on winning we will do it, but we need man utd to have a blip at the right time. come’on arsenal

If we buy mertesacker and van der wiel. We gona win da league. nobody should be sent away. except vela,eboue,squillaci. denilson shoulnt go coz he beta than wilshere. if’ve honestly never seen him lose the ball in long time and wilshere is opposite to this. denilson is more dependable in the big games and we cant use wilshere in the big games coz he loses the all the time.
