Arsenal rumours July 11th – Bendtner, Downing, Samba and Nenad Lukic

Posted on July 11, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger promised Arsenal fans a “busy summer”, but as the squad flies off for their pre-season tour there has just been one in (Carl Jenkinson) and one out (Gael Clichy) while Wenger talks of “playing cards close to his chest.”

But that hasn’t stopped the papers being full of Arsenal transfer news, and the first one concerns Nicklas Bendtner’s omittal from the Asian tour. It has been reported that Borussia Dortmund are still favourites to sign him, but didn’t I read a firm denial of that rumour not long ago? My money is on the Dane moving to Newcastle.

The Toon boss has money to splash and Bendtner is only 4/1 in the betting to be at St. James Park next season. It makes sense to me considering that Bendtner would love to prove to Wenger that he can score goals in the Premiership, and Newcastle is just about as close as you can get to Denmark and still be in England!

The Stewart Downing rumours just don’t ring true to me either. Okay he’s talented, but he seems keen to move to Liverpool and would Wenger really spend £17m on a winger when he already has loads of talented midfielders? I doubt it very much……

A much more likely winger rumour is the news that Arsenal are interested in the Lokomotiv Plovdiv winger Nenad Lukić. This 18 year-old Serbian left-winger has just scored six goals in the European U19 Championships so is obviously very talented. Wenger always has scouts at these youth tournaments looking for young gems so this one looks like a live one to me…..

Finally, Christopher Samba has been linked to Arsenal for just too long. I think he lost his chance of signing for Arsenal when he extended his contract at Blackburn in January. The Mirror reckons that Tottenham are now favourites to sign him and I’m not surprised really. Wenger has already said that Thomas Vermaelen is “like a new signing” after his season-long injury, and with four other centre-backs on the books I just doubt he will be buying another one…..

  1. AYJ says:

Wenger definitely needs to buy English players in order to replenish his “homegrown” player stocks… Bendtner, Clichy, Fabregas, Denilson, Mannone and Traore… are all very likely to leave the emirates, and are all considered “homegrown” players… I understand why Downing’s name has been thrown up, though I really don’t think he is a good fit for Arsenal… talented yes, though too one dimensional as a player, in that he a left winger and not much else… he is not versatile enough as a midfielder I don’t think… therefore he is not a typical Wenger midfielder signing… Wenger, as you need to buy English, please look at defenders first… such as Cahill, Baines… Rodwell is another!!!! It is obvious Wenger has to sell before he buys [which is ridiculous for a club like AFC!!!]… Wenger needs to use the Fabregas/Denilson/Almunia/Bendtner… possible Nasri and ‘whoever else’ money better than throwing 17m at a player like Stuart Downing!!! To be honest, if he is going to buy a one dimensional Englishmen, I’d rather see him spend 25m on Bent!! English defenders first Wenger!!!!!

  4. TVR says:

Guys, have you all actually heard of a defender in our squad named Bartley? Its true that we need someone strong to stop the flow of goals towards our post. I seriously hope that Wenger signs Mertsacker. This can give us an aerial protection as he is one of the tallest in this game. So my point is just one quality defender can do it for us in the defensive area. Bartley, as much i know, is a quality player. He was instrumental at Rangers. Thus we can have 3 defensive pairs(TV5 and Mertsacker,Djourou and Koscielny,Miquel and Bartley) and could be rotated accordingly. As for the defensive mid we all saw what Frimpong is capable of during last year’s pre seasons. He can be a good cover for Song or could be better! Let both Fabregas and Nasri leave. I dont feel Wenger should hold on to two players who dont want to play for our team(we already hav enough!). I feel the pair of Wilshere and Ramsey could take the responsibility. We all witnessed what these two are capable of, when they are given the responsibility in the midfield, against Man U. We have secured the deal of Gervinho and he could be a challenger for the spot of Arshavin in the first team. I seriously feel that we need one more winger if we cant secure the work permit for Miyaichi. We are actually in short of cover for Walcott. But if Miyaichi is there we need noy buy anyone else. I dont feel we should add any more strikers to our squad. RVP can be the first choice, Chamakh can give us the aerial threat and Vela as we all know can prove his critics wrong with his talent and can become a fox in the box if given enough oppertunities. Lansbury and Rocisky cold providethe cover for Wilshere and Ramsey. The GK we have is also decent enough. The only thing i didnt mention was the LB which is vacant. I have never analysied Gibbs so iI cant say much about him. So the conclution is DONT BE PANIC!!!!! We just need one defender and may be a LB and RW. Keep the faith. ITS OUR 125TH YEAR. WE WILL RISE AGAIN FROM ASHES. GO GUNNERS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We still have enough for our 8/25 rule & there are people to be promoted. All the “Wenger must buy English”, to get “that British feel” or “spirit” or “backbone” that we have seen in blogs and comments smack of something else. Are these not the same people that disapoint in International matches? How come these English players hardly do well when they go out to play in other leagues? Does it not suggest that the English press hype their players? Or is all the noise aimed at courting the press & biased referees?

  7. AYJ says:

@Lanz – Premier League experience is the key… emphasis on ‘experience’… the players that could fill the void if other experienced “homegrown” players such as Clichy and Fabregas leave are simply too inexperienced and unproven and at Premier League level… if Arsenal rely on this type of inexperienced player again for next season, then the same path that leads to nothing will trodden down once again… don’t get me wrong I think Bartley, Frimpong, Lansbury etc will be great players in coming seasons… though we would be expecting too much of them if we think these players will be world beaters next season… and this is exactly what we want to have… a team full of world beaters!!! Also, it is just about securing the services of very good, Premier League hardened, and experienced players that are also [if possible] able to contribute to the Premier League quota system… So, if they are English, all the better I say!! As well, the names of English players that have been mentioned have been mainly Cahill, Parker and Baines… even Rodwell… who are all world class English players!! Integrating top class and experienced English players is indeed one important component of securing a Premier League / FA Cup title… The Champions League may be a different story, however this type of player will certainly provide the strength in depth required to at least challenge for top honors in Europe…

  11. miyaichi says:

Firstly @ AYJ , rodwell is not a defender, @ TVR ,ramsey who??ramsey is not mature enough to shoulder the responsibilities of afc midfield, too light,we need downing, at least lest have a natural left footed winger ,as for getting a defender,I said it in my previous post,we need an english player for our defence, will like cahill or jagielka,it hurts losing jones to manutd,I thought we were gonna get him,as for cesc,if he wants to leave arsenal ,it would be ideal for wenger to include abidal in the deal, maybe 35 + abidal ,abidal can play the LB this season and gibbs will be cover up for him,his experience will be good for the defence plus he could pass some barca flare to these youngstars, gibbs will be ready for next season ,I don’t think now,and getting baines will hamper gibbs chances of playing because baines is still a very young player,by the way, who’s lukic,we have so many under 20s,arsenal need no kid anymore, let’s go for experience,I’m looking forward to Arsene adding Agudelo to this team,a very direct striker,so happy our goalkeeping position is safe,I keep wondering what would have been happening by now if arsene was to get a goal keeper, sczesny is God sent at a very tender age,we definitely have a trophy,we have the squad and also a very good manager, does anyone thing theo should be starting for arsenal next season???I don’t just see any improvement from him sins joining from southampton, will prefer him on the bench, what do you think?WE ARE EVERBLAZIN GOONERS,keep the faith….in arsene we always trust….

  12. JOHN - JOHN says:

I think that TOBY ALDERWIELD (ajax’s CB) would be the perfect choise for our defence
Also LUKIC could be a top class winger and with miyaichi would our future wingers
I think that Leighton BAINES is the LB we need
Finally I think that FALCAO is the perfect choise for our attack

WITH THESE TRANSFER THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS OURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Downing is exactly the sort of player fans don’t want but Wenger does. Loads of technical talent but soft as xxxx no bottle and too often fails to deliver. Can you see Downing playing wide and tracking back, knowing what he is doing, to help protect our defence. He is a nearly man … which is what the Frenchies call Wenger.

@chris,downing will be a good signing but the only defect I see with this transfer is the price on him,I think he shouldn’t be more than 10 to 15mill,we don’t have wingers that often trackback, only arshavin does that, walcott and nasri doesn’t,can’t tell how it sounds with you guys ,but I’m having total faith in miyaichi coming season,he was awesome with fayenood last season, how long will gervinho medicals take before AFC come out with a news, haven’t heard of a medical taking more than two weeks of expectations,I’m so scared remembering the case of franck ribery, almost done but stolen by bayern, don’t wanna be a goner so I’m keeping fingers crossed and I’m still keeping the faith,no matter what happens….once a gooner always a gooner

TVR,I wish we could try out your opinion and see how we end up the season.Thank God you don’t represent the majority of Fans with a better Ken for the phenomenal heights Arsenal has reason to with Wenger in the last six years. We need real players, not the scum we have been used to in the last few years. It is ppl like you who label Fabregas and Nasri ingrates without going into their minds to understand their genuine frustrations of hanging out in a nursery every year without progress. What other story that this man needs to tell us again;operation youth that failed big time,or him waiting for dateline day only to bring in Scum?.Show me even the most unambitious club that would still have Wenger as its coach. But I have a prediction, one day soon,Wenger will wake up and discover he has been sacked, the greedy henchmen on the board will abandon him when they realise they can’t make money from endorsements and tickets.

    so we signed gervinho?

The French boss also announced that the club had completed the signing of Lille forward Gervinho.”Gervinho has just joined up for training today at London Colney,” he added.

this is YET AGAIN a typical AW signing! For the reported £10.6 as well for this unknown french player – is it really so difficult to get a known, quality player!? NOTHING has changed!!

  18. Arsenal are a joke says:

Wenger is losing his marbles. AFC is no longer a football club but his own experiment.

Fan boycotts are the only way forward. How can they expect us to pay so much money to follow a club and then pocket it all themselves while leaving the fans and the team to be the joke of the EPL.

Busy summer? Just busy for Mr Wenger who will churn out his usual lies while trying to take a shot for his own personal glory again by trying to prove his budget team can win something.

    @gunnersfan!
Gervinho is only unknown to you. He is a quality winger/striker from the ivory coast, not France, who scored 15 league goals last season. Most arsenal fans know exactly who he is, and most are looking forward to seeing him at the emirates.

  20. NIckW says:

Arsene Wenger is really starting to worry me. I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt because he promised to address our defensive problems but now he seems to be slipping back into to his old deluded self. If he doesn’t by a tall proven centre back this summer he might as leave now because it is negligence verging on the criminal. Samaba at 12 million seems like a good deal to me so what the hell is he waiting for. I don’t trust the man anymore he’s made to many obvious mistakes and deceived the fans too many times. I don’t care what he’s done 6 years ago he’s screwing our club up now. Nottingham Forest kept Brian clough on way past his sell by date and he eventually got them relegated, is that what its going to take to get rid of this deluded fool?

  26. I advise all Arsenal fans who stay in London that next year if Arsenal goes trophy-less,just mobilise each other and start protesting and demonstrating in the streets of London at/around Arsenal’s headquarters while singing “ARSENE WENGER MUST GO,ARSENE WENGER MUST GO, THE WHOLE OF ARSENAL’S CURRENT BOARD MUST BE SACKED,THE WHOLE OF ARSENAL’S CURRENT BOARD MUST BE SACKED,and also carrying banners written on those words and you should be very serious and protest/demonstrate until/up to the day that Wenger will either resign by himself or is fired/sacked and also until/up to the day that the whole of Arsenal’s current board will either resign by itself or is fired, after this you say they look for/appoint a new, serious, competent, skillful, tactful and non-economical/non-economiser coach and board to make Arsenal to be winning trophies every season/year.Am sure by doing this, Arsenal will be winning trophies every year/season.You can even do this[protesting and demonstrating] during this current break to make Arsenal to be winning trophies every season/year as from next[2011/12] season, yeah.

i think Wenger will move kos up to a permanent starter, its unlike him to cast aside a player after one season. he’ll no doubt improve on last year, that was his debut season and the he never had a settled decent partnership switching between DJ and Squillaci (Squad players).Vermaelen will be moved out to the left where he plays for his country and ajax before and Wenger will splash some money on a Good CB Mertersacker or Cahill. id prefer mertersacker he’s 6’6!!!

    Sagna — Cahill/Mertersacker — Koscielny — Vermaelen

  31. jermaine says:

the left back that would be idea is michel bastos. although he aint the best of defenders he is one of the most exciting going forward. What this will also mean is after one season we can move him to left wing to eventually replace arshavin and by then gibbs would b ready to step up. with bastos also having the ability to pay at left back it would complete the left side as he can help gibbs by tracking back.

Am i the only one who thinks we don’t need to sign any center back? for the majority of last year
    1 djourou
    2 koscielny
    3 squilaci
    4 vermealen/miquel
    this season
    1 vermaelen > djouru
    2 djourou > koscielny
    3 koscielny > squilaci

So what if Wenger doesn’t buy ‘big names’ – big names are rarely for sale anyway and when they are they go for 30million + and rarely do well at other teams.
All we need now is a left back or another centerback, and replacements if Nasri leaves (Mata) and if fabregas leaves (irreplaceable – maybe Nasri if he gained some heart and loyalty)

What arsenal need right nw is nt just signing players but also changing the club’s mentality to playing football.whatz the point of having countless numbers of passes without a shot on target to show for it.Having a single pattern/ approach to playing makes it difficult 2 beat lesser teams who are more defence conscious.Learn to take shots frm d outside box.Initiate positional plays..and sign tall players to give us aerial advntage during set pieces
