Arsenal rumours July 24th – Mertsacker, Gallas, Rosicky and “Magic” Honda
All the latest Arsenal transfer news seems to be concentrating on the much-needed centre-back, and it is now being reported that Arsene Wenger has given up hope of persuading Everton to let Phil Jagielka leave at a reasonable price, and he has now turned his attention to the German defender Per Mertsacker.
The big 27 year-old still has two years left on his contract at Werder Bremen so he probably won’t come much cheaper than Jagielka, but Wenger is hoping to pay just £10m for him according to reports. I know that some Arsenal fans were raving about him during the World Cup, but is he good enough for the top level of the Premier League?
Despite Arsene Wenger’s denials earlier in the transfer window, it is being reported that CSKA Moscow are trying to persuade Thomas Rosicky to move to the Russian Premier League. The 29 year Czech international has only made 69 appearances for the Gunners in his four years at the club (funnily enough, the same amount as Eduardo) and was given a contract extension just six months ago (again like Eduardo!). Could he also be following Eduardo to the East? I don’t think he will, but I didn’t think Eduardo would leave either!
Talking about CSKA Moscow, I would like to think that if Rosicky was to go there, then he would be a makeweight in a deal that involved Keisuke Honda coming the other way. The player (that Arsene Wenger famously called “Magic”) has made noises that implied he may move to a bigger club, and it was said that the club involved was AC Milan. But today Honda’s agent says there is no deal in place for him to go to the Italian giants.
“I know nothing about this”, Kees Ploegsma (Honda’s agent) said.
“No one contacted me. Few clubs have asked information but these have been only informal talks and at the end nothing became concrete.
“Honda signed in January with CSKA Moscow and he has a deal until Decenmber 2013.
“We don’t know if the Russian side are ready to sell him. Obviously it’s an honour being linked to so prestigious sides, but it is not a surprise because Keisuke did good things in World Cup and with CSKA too.”
I know that Rosicky is a good player (when he’s fit) but I am hoping a lot that Honda would arrive in his place. He is obviously still available…..
It’s a real shame to see William Gallas whoring himself all over Europe with his outrageous contract demands, and the latest club to say that he is pricing himself out of the market is Panathinaikos. “We made an offer to the player, but it is difficult to reach an agreement,” said Panathinaikos vice-president Dimitris Gontikas.
“We are continuing talks with his representatives and hope to find a solution, but it’s not easy. Gallas interests us, but we’ll look elsewhere if there are other possibilities.”
It is said that the 32 year-old Gallas is demanding a three-year contract worth £35,000 a week. Who does he think he is, Sol Campbell?

We need depth at the back and Sol Campbell doesn’t count. Sure he’s free and experienced but I think it’s time to let the big man go his way. He’s not going to start unless it’s absolutely necessary. Gallas and Silvestre are finally gone and we need players who have experience but also aren’t too old so that the team can stay together for a while. This has been one of the main problems with Arsenal lately, every year there’s significant changes in the team. The core of the Invincibles all played together for years and that led to success but it seems a big part of the puzzle goes missing every year and we have to constantly replace it.
Djourou has not convinced me that he’s Arsenal quality but Wenger is keeping him so I can’t do anything about that. However we only have 3 central defenders and Djourou is already injury prone so we can’t go long spells with only Koscielny and TV as our defenders. It’s necessary to rest players and yet have some quality to rotate them with when necessary. Mertesacker isn’t especially fast but he’s intelligent, understands space and is hard in the tackle. I’m still a bit annoyed we’ve overlooked Bougherra who would jump at the chance to come play for us for 8M at best. He’s quick for his size, tall, rough and can read the game well and he’s reasonably aged at 27.
I like Rosicky but he’s had injuries his entire career and that’s not going to change. He’s good at retaining possession but he’s a shadow of his Dortmund self out on the wings. It’s not his preferred position but he’s not as good as Cesc to take the middle so I wouldn’t mind seeing him go for Honda who looks like he;s got an engine in him.
We still need a goalie and please stop promoting Schwarzer. A 37 year old is not a solution, it’s a band-aid that we could do without. There’s a whole lot of keepers we could get, they’ll cost more than 4M but most of them are worth it and it’s worth it to Wenger to cover up his most vulnerable position. Scezny and Mannone are still very green and I haven’t seen much in them to be all celebratory like everyone else about them being future “world class” keepers so I’m not jumping the gun like alot of other fans just yet.
roskicky is good when hes fit.. but hes only fit for like a quarter of his football career.. and honda, if you actually look at him playing, no wonder arsene thinks hes magic!
He’s good at dribbling, passing and keeping possession but he used to score double digit goals from long range – he hardly shoots nowadays and we need players to take more chances from outside the box instead of trying to walk the ball into the net
We will see
WC, are you Russian or from Russian speaking country?
AW,
Try to sell Almunia(€2-4) and Fabianski(€2-4) (+buget +wage x2)
By good one for the price of two(€8-14) (-budget -wage)
Sell Rosicky (€8-10)
Buy back Hleb(€3-5) and Flamini(€4-6) (I know it is a dream)
Loan out Eastmond, Bartley, Miquel, Henderson, Lansbury,Randall, Simpson(or sell), Barazite, Watt
per mertesacker is 25.
get your facts right!
35k a week gallas damn thts not even close from wht he wants he has more now at arsenal probably like 100 k or more a week tht why arsen let him go seriues 35 k today is a laugher
Our Arsenal fc is one of the best club in the world. They must keep there team spirit going as they defeated barnet, fulham and our next target will be liverpool. We want the league title this year.
We need keisuke honda. He is great player. And need arsenal playing style. And igor akinfeev too. Please arsene wenger to by honda. Please
i guess gallas will join arsenal again atlast beacuase no one can meet his wage demands. On the other hand, i guess Rosicky won’t leave Arsenal because Wenger praises him & he is a very good and attacking midfielder & show good football this season so it will be difficult for him to leave because wenger also doesn’t have enough guts to buy a worthy player Honda because you know he doesn’t usually put high money on a single player, though he should!!!
