Arsenal rumours July 29th – Mertsacker, Tasci, Veloso, Frey and Schwarzer
Arsene Wenger was interviewed after the friendly match with Neusiedl and during the session he was directly asked if he was trying to sign Per Mertsacker, and although he didn’t give a straight yes, he did emphasise that Arsenal still needed another centre-back.
He said: “There are people we consider and are analysing and we look at the financial possibilities,”.
“We are still on the search for centre-halves. We have three and we need at least four.”
I know its a case of stating-the-bleeding-obvious, but surely the “financial possibilities” are not a problem? Arsenal have a nett spend so far this summer of just 4m euros, and the wage bill has been significantly lowered by the departures of Gallas, Campbell, Senderos, Silvestre and Eduardo. If the £40m “war-chest” was anyewhere near the truth, then Wenger has more than enough financial clout to sign anyone!
Okay so Wenger didn’t deny that he was after Mertsacker, which is a positive sign, and it has been reported in the Sun this morning that Arsenal have also held talks with Stuttgart over the German international defender Serdar Tasci. He is a younger alternative to Mertsacker with probably more room for improvement, but the Sun says Arsenal have offered £10m but I doubt very much that he will come that cheaply.
His agent, Uli Ferber has played up the move: “Serdar admires English football and has huge respect for Arsenal.” he said. But with Tasci’s contract with the Bundesliga side running for another four years I reckon £20m will be closer to the asking price….
For no reason at all, the Portugese paper Abola has reported that Miguel Veloso has been negotiating to join the Italian side Genoa, but Arsenal are considering a last minute 13m euro bid to try and hijack the move. Veloso has been linked with Arsenal since the Year Dot so it’s no surprise that another link has appeared this summer. But I imagine it is just a ruse by Sporting to try and get his price up. Another report in Abola this morning says that Inter Milan are also making a bid….
This morning’s ITA Sport in Italy are saying that Arsenal are keeping talks with Fiorentina open regarding Sebastian Frey, just in case they can’t reach an agreement with Cagliari over Federico Marchetti. Although the Fiori have said that Artur Boruc has been bought to give some competition to Frey, I don’t believe that either of them would be happy with sitting on the bench next season. Frey MUST be leaving, but whether he comes to Arsenal is a different matter…..
The Daily Mirror also thinks that the Marchetti story is just a smokescreen, and their star football reporter John Cross says that Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer still remains Arsenal’s number one target. I personally am getting bored with these Schwarzer stories. If Mark Hughes takes over at the Cottage, do you really think he will let Schwarzer go? I doubt it very much….

Agreed I don’t even want Schwarzer, he’s better than what we’ve got but for how long, a year tops. I’d be happy with Marchetti good young keeper, international experience and AW favourite word he’s cheap – ish. Mertsacker and Miguel Veloso I would love to see and the club but can’t see it sadly. Why would we go for this type of play with genuine quality and experience when we can sign two 14 year old african boys for 10p

Arsenal can get 2 quality players from CSKA Moskva! Akinfeev and Honda! Pleeease!! Akinfeev has already said that if Arsenal called, he would sign! What are we waiting for? We need a new goalkeeper and he would be great! I would also love to see Honda play alongside Fabregas and Nasri!! He would definitely suit Arsenal’s style of play!
I thought there was cash available to strengthen the squad? Also several players have left so that frees up the wage structure, no?

I think the biggest problem Wenger has with signing any player is that they have to have to be reasonably intelligent & have the right attitude to fit in with his Arsenal vision. Regardless of footballing ability, it would be completely counter productive to sign a player that was going to bring ego baggage with them & not fit in. The clearer his vision, the harder it is to find suitable players.There are plenty of examples of clubs that spend big but don’t move forward.
Schwarzer is one the best keepers in the epl. It’s obvious those who don’t want him know NOTHING about football. Arsenal need schwarzer, he’ll provide a good 2-3 years of service. After this szczney will be the number 1
Ha ha AW still wouldn’t spend it on players! By the way fab was never meant to replace pat as far as I’m concerned we have never replaced viera. Hleb and nasri are two totally different players if anything hleb was better. Although I’ll agree diaby was ok in the world cup he certainly isn’t viera and defiantly isn’t fab. We all know NB is dreadful we all saw the difference RVP made when he came on against barca, yes NB scored but his touch, pace and General ability is nowhere near what we need at arsenal.

I doubt this Schwazer talk. AW himself responded “not really”, when his interest in Schwazer was askd- right after our 1st pre seadon friendly. So why do reporters keep goin on abt the goalie? The two being considered now are Stekelenburg & Marchetti. The latter seems more likely but I prefer the former. I don’t belive the Veloso tale either. We are to register 25 players & AW wishes to promote some youth, among whom I hope we have C.Eastmond or Frimpong. If Wishere & Havard N are also being promoted there will be little or no space. Finally, its important to consider wages while we request AW to buy, buy, buy!
i concur with u mates schwazer is no better and i hope,really hope that we don’t sign him,after all the mistakes we’ve heard from keepers let’s take our time and come up with a serious option,frey, Marchetti but would love stekelenberg though,let wenger take his time.
seriously without a doubt we need a GK………plz any one ……cant watch almunia being arsenals no 1 for another season…..1 CB is also a must though one more wouldn’t heart……… if we have da cash than why not ozil, cause all of us know feb will be leaving if not this season than the next…….if the ozil deal is done this yr he will get time to gel and understand the premier league style of football…………

As much as I rate Ozil I think Wenger doesnt feel he needs him now or in the future, Wilshere, Ramsey, Nasri will be pushing to lock down first 11 spots soon, so I think he has Cesc’s and Rosicky future departures covered. I think if Ozil is available for 12-15m as reported then we should sign him in preparation for Cesc eventually going to Barca and Rosicky getting on a bit( Or since CSKA Mosow are interested maybe Rosicky + 5-7mil for Akinfeev, maybe? Maybe they could throw in their slightly used Honda too for the right price and we cant get Ozil)
But the priority has to be a Goalkeeper and 2 Right sided CBs, one experienced strong player and maybe another one for the future who must have the quality to keep the more experienced player looking over their shoulder.
I would love (probably unrealistic though)
£5mil+ Rosicky – Akinfeev
£25mil – Mertesacker + Ozil (Werder Bremen asking 10-15m for Ozil. Bargain!)
£7 – 1st choice- V.Kompany in Man City’s fire sale (24 and could back up Mertesacker or Song) or 2nd choice Richards

regarding the gk situation..
stekelenburg played for ajax in champions league qualifying yest which means he’s cup tied,so he is out of the picture..
now marchetti seems more likely since he has handed in a transfer request and only club that is interested seems to be us..
now regarding the CBs , mertesacker and tasci are all on the news.but only one seems to be likely..
Metersacker is big and more experienced, he is also a GUNNER, Tasci is tall, versatile (can play as a right back, CB or defensive midfielder) and he is young with as much experience as Vermaelen. Either one of this should add a bit of confidence. Both would be massive ambitious move, even if Fabregas leaves.

we have enough midfielders in diaby,song,walishere,dennilson,rosicky,walcot(a striker but can play in mid),nasri,Ramsey,arsharvin,fabregas,estmond and many more.Our perfomances last seasonwas very strong in the midfield areas so i think i don’t need any more midfielders be it ozil or who,in midfield i have a very strong belief that we will perform no matter what.Our problem though is in the defence particularly right centre back position and a good goalkeeper.Goalkeepers win trophies for the team,i rate vito mannone though he will one day become one of the best goalkeepers.
Come on Arsene, just buy Sebastien Frey, he would be a great signing..

Come on we are getting Akinfeev. But if we did im going to London to see him being presented.3-5 players is what we need or we are still short. Our starting 11 is always good but its when injuries and suspensions kick in is when we drop points. I love the Veloso rumour how class would he be beside song. He is left footed and there would be great balance. If we cant get Akinfeev get Frey.Schwarzer wouldnt do any better than what we have plus he couldnt play 55 games a year. Fry could play for 5 years then 1 of our young keepers could step up. We need Mertasacker to add steal and much needed hieght in the defence.Id be happy with that squad and if im greedy id like another Att Mid or CF and a CB.

arsenal needs an experienced gk n a big, strong n powerfull defender the likes of mertesacker.AW shud also try romelu lukaku, though youg but very powerfull n is the drogba type nthats whats needed in the epl frotline. romelu will also act as back up for injury prone van persie n goal shy bendtner.
