Arsenal & Spurs In Battle To Sign Defender
Bolton boss Owen Coyle knows that Gary Cahill will probably not be around at the Reebok much longer, and once the transfer window opens in January Arsenal and North London rivals Spurs are sure to renew their interest in the England international.
We all know what happened over the summer with regards to Cahill, and once Arsenal pulled out Spurs tried to sign him, but they also failed to agree a price.
Coyle knows he has a fight on his hands to keep the 25 year-old defender and said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if they came back. Arsene has always said he is an admirer of Gary Cahill. But the clubs never agreed a fee. Gary has nothing to prove. He is a top performer, who is set for a glittering career.”
We know that Bolton want £15Million for Cahill, but when the transfer window opens in January Cahill will only have six months remaining on his contract and they are never going to get that for him no matter what Coyle and Chairman Phil Gartside think.
If we are in for Cahill again, as we surely will be despite what has gone on, we must make sure we do not make the same mistake as we did in August, but if we believed every report about who was coming to Arsenal in January we would have enough players for almost three teams!

Had we not gone for Martesacker…..I would have said Samba……but since both Martesacker and Samba can be a bit slow at times……believe Cahill is a must at Arsenal right now to provide that strong defence ! Further,we require change of formation to 4-4-2. Persie seriously needs help in front of goal ! Rumours that Aresnal are planning to bring Ricky Alvarez on loan in January from Inter-Milan ! Believe me when I say no thank you…..saw him play for argentina in Kolkata (India)…very-very ordinary player !

It had to be….Wenger needed to sign some defensive players and sign them early in the `window`; for whatever reason this did not happen. Mertesacker and Santos could well prove to be a liability ,like so many others Wenger has signed. If this is someones idea of quality I beg to differ. Cahill is a must.

Aussie Jack your comments are normally quite sensible but Santos is a Brazilian international who you have written off after one game which was his first of the season in any competition and Mertesacker has played 75 times for Germany. I doubt very much that they will be liabilities like Djourou, Squillaci, Koschielny at times, Jenkinson, Senderos, Almunia, Fabianski, Clichy, Eboue, Silvestre….. Oh, there really were a lot of them weren’t there so maybe you do have a point. Imagine us having Sagna, Mertesacker, Cahill and Vermaelen in defense with Szczesny in goal, surely then we’d be solid at the back.

Pay the money for Cahill, well worth every pound and get Samba as well, then the unit can function at the back. Sort it now AW. No hesitation this time.

Some people just don’t understand, defense is not just about skill, it’s about discipline,coordination, and communication, and to build these characteristics takes a lot of time playing together. We have 3 new defenders this season, not just one, give them some time before you judge them.

I agree Alex that the new players deserve to be given time, can’t say the same for some of the previous signings though. I missed Djourou off that list of defensive liabilities. It is frustrating because in attack the team has been consistently good, the problems are always with the defense.

People go on as cahill is some kind of david luiz. take a good look at bolton do not believe the hype. because he is english people think cahill is better than what we have at the club already. well he is better than squillaci and more ready than miquel. he is also slightly better than djourou.. however i am uncertain as to whether he is better than mertesacker vermaelen and koscielny. personally though i want to see us with 3 players fighting for each position and i dont just mean having 3 players i mean people like sagna actually looking over their shoulder thinking christ if i dont play well today i could be out. that is why we need 3 serious contenders for each position. 12 defenders are required at the moment we have sagna jenkinson mertesacker djourou squillaci bartley koscielny miquel vermaelen gibbs santos. that means as it stands we are 1 player short in terms of numbers however i would sell djourou and squillaci so that makes 3. my additions would be van der weil cahill and vertonghen. defence sorted.

I understand that in the EPL there is a need for big strong FBs to handle the endless supply of crosses into the area, however, the old adage still holds true.
That is,”the best form of defense is offense.A policy the Brazilian team has adopted very successfully for numerous years and so do Barca.
Of one looks back to our latest defeat, I do believe if Gervinho had passed the ball to allow RVP to slot home from 6 yards and increase the score to 3 -1 we would had a different result.
RVP needs the assistance of a more clinical twin striker.
Looking back to the the Carling Cup final, if the money grabbing, trophy seeking Nasri had taken 50% of the chances he had,we would have won.
Having said that , the likes of the efficient ball watcher Djourou should not be in or first team.
Onwards and upwards THE ARSENAL.

Alo the defenders in the premiership are there for arsenal to grab because the so call big team have got their full team…but instead for 2 to3 more millions more the board ignores them and goes for less quality defender…

Yeah this is good,Arsenal should remove whichever amount of money to buy Gary Cahill.Apart from Cahill,I think Arsenal should sell its ‘potato’ defenders like Djourou,Koscielny, Jenkinson,etc and buy [not all but some] elegant defenders like: Chris Samba,Luke Young,Stephen Warnock,Diego Lugano, Michel Bastos,Leighton Baines,Scott Dann,Subotic,Hulk[FC Porto],Brede Hangeland,Kabole[Totthenham Hotspur],Barry Bannan,Zubar[Wolves],Collins[Aston Villa],Brett Omerodd,Jack Coleback,etc.

Jenkinson is unfortunate that he is backup Right Back before he’s ready and he’ll be judged as such. We should have someone between him and Sagna and i don’t mean Djourou !! United were able to sell Wes Brown and John O’Shea and still have four outstanding full backs in their squad.

Wanjala, Hulk would be great because he got 36 goals and 21 assists last season but i don’t think even Arsene would be brave enough to play him as a defender.

Charlie,if Wenger can’t remove money to buy those elegant defenders whom I’ve mentioned,then Wenger should be sacked amd replaced by a non-economical/non-economiser coach so as to buy those defenders!
