Arsenal strike legend believes in Walcott’s ability!

Posted on September 28, 2012 by Bob

Wright backs Walcott by TS

Ian Wright has come out stating that Walcott should be given his chance as a striker at Arsenal. The ex Arsenal legend has also pleaded with the club to resolve the winger’s contract dispute before the player is forced to move on.

Walcott scored twice against Coventry but Wenger still insists that the player will ‘have to be patient’ before given the chance to play upfront. This comes after Walcott expressed his desire to follow in Henry’s footsteps.

Wright has agreed with Walcott’s wishes to emulate Henry’s career stating: “I love Theo and have been saying for a long time that he should be playing as a striker,” Wright told ESPN. “Clearly he is not the finished article and could do with some more work from the Arsenal coaches, but Theo has all the ingredients to be a top striker.

“Wenger has been saying for a long time that he sees Theo developing into a striker, so give the guy a chance to prove he can do it. If it doesn’t work, then fair enough, but it has to be worth a try.”

“My hope is the fans get Theo’s contract situation sorted and then he can get on with showing what he can do on the field,” Wright said. “There are so many good things about this guy, but people always tend to focus on the negatives.

Wright also asked for the Arsenal faithful to remain patient with the winger, stating, “The trouble for me is that people believe he should be doing more than he does every week and that expectation around him isn’t all his own fault. There he was at 16, never played for Arsenal in the Premier League and he was thrown into the England World Cup squad in 2006. It was stupid. Ever since, people want him to win games on his own every week and nothing he does is good enough.

“I hear so many people slagging off Premier League footballers for being bad role models, but Theo is a great asset to our game. He is a solid young man, articulate and never gets himself into trouble on or off the pitch. What more could you want from a guy in a high profile position? So I hope the Arsenal fans give him a bit of a break instead of getting on his back.”

With Wright’s record of scoring goals, he should know what he is talking about when it comes to strikers but, then again, I have got faith in Wenger’s judgement. What is the general consensus on this, Gooners?

@Dreamer : So wat Defoe is right now in a great form. He is the exact striker arsenal needed , (if you forget for a moment that he is a SPUDS legend in the making).
If he thinks walcott can emulate defoe here.. then WRIGHT must be RIGHT ..

  10. John Legend.... Truth is bitter says:

He sure can finish. He’s not a finished article, that’s a fact. He has τ☺ be patient and start as a second striker with Giroud, he can’t strike alone. He knows what he was saying when he said he has τ☺ be patient. I think coming on late on in games τ☺ partner someone is a gφφd place τ☺ start.

Giroud seems τ☺ be gφφd in the air and therefore can flick on τ☺ Walcott.

    @Dreamer :
Ya may be papis Cisse is better than defoe. but defoe has better dribbling skills than Him. and Now if we try to adapt to 4-4-2 we need someone like Giroud along side a dribbling striker..

Looking at his goals vs Coventry and vs Chelsea (last year), it’s still winger approach, not CF. He does have potential and I believe Wenger will give him a chance, but Walcott must sign the contract first!

like Giroud, give him a chance.becoz of his pace, our opponents will always make sure they leave two defenders on him when they are taking corners hence reducing their chance of scoring from the corner situation.it gives him chance to score more from situations where the ball is headed in and he has to chase it against the opposite defenders

Walcott needs to work on some of his attributes like finishing with both feet, crossing and Dribbling passed players

  20. S.H says:

At 23 Walcott is technically behind players younger than he. I’ve been waiting for 6 years to see our 9M investment come to fruition, and frankly had enough. He can’t dribble – hold the ball – can’t cross – can’t beat his man one on one – has no football brain – and wants a pay rise?

Sell him in Jan and get a proper winger. Don’t even mention Theo emulating Henry in the CF position. Henry was all class and had the complete balance between pace, brains and technical grace. Walcott only has pace! The 2 goals he scored against Coventry were from wing positions. Go figure!

Opinions divided. What do you think? Thumb up 9 Thumb down 9

  21. Red DB 10 says:

    AW wants him to patient?
He has been at the club for six years man and it’s not like we have a multitude of strikers.
Give the guy a chance for the love of god and as for the people who say he can’t finish, did you see his second goal against coventry.

well really, he would be more suited that way… as he lacks with his crossing and passing quite often… mind you… the whole team lacks crossing

Walcott can only play up top in a 4 4 2 that
Is so obvious, arsenal play 4 3 3 if arsenal play
Walcott up top buy he’s self the other team only
Has to play with a deep line and that will end it all
He can’t hould up the ball with small full backs on he’s
Back so what make you think he will do it with big centre backs loooool I like walcatt ,but ian said before the seasion starteted that arsenal will not get any where with van persie.?
Wallcatt best pos is a striker but not in a 4 3 3 he is not strong a nuff, he should play like henandez from man u if he get the chance allways on the shoulder of the last man.

walcott’s best position is striker and he dont need to be no:9 but he just need to be freeman that he can drubble and he can shot he can run the on his feet and that is what henry was the bigining of his career of arsenal then he adapted with that and walcott canbe like that im suer walcott he’s better the one who said groud inthat position and walcott he loves the club he’s an arsenal fun now he need to help the team and score more goals if player said to you that he need to change his position that is he need to help team with another position and it means that position he’s playing now there’s player better than him so he can see that and not to push on him so arsene wengar he has to understand that and if walcott didnt sign contarct extension that means wengar wants to belive his countryman groud who scored 7games 1goal that is shame with him and we need some who has class scorer and wolcott is thta man and we see that and plz wengar see what we can see and if u bilve that wolcott cant play that position he will sign another club like spurs and he will play where ever he needs to player im sure thate

Beautiful finesse shot by Theo against Coventry and you guys say that is one in a million, he still needs to work on that finish blah blah blah

One amazing chip from giroud against Coventry and every one is going what a player class look …
I personally would play gervinho ahead of Theo upfront every time but Theo deserves his chance.

Ok he can’t dribble fine but imagine a scenario if we fielded him as a cf against Barcelona. They would either have to give up a midfielder to mark him or we could keep playing a lofted through ball for him to chase which would hurt them

Niklas bendtner wasn’t the best of dribblers when I first saw him in an arsenal shirt but now he can do a few step overs and flicks. Mauro camoranessi was also never a good dribbler but his pace made him one of the best wingers in the game

All am saying is, Theo can learn how to dribble. He isn’t too old

And for gervinho, after scuffing chances at city, every one is going he can’t finish he needs to many chances to score and all that. Let me ask you
how many chances did he use against Montpelier? First shot first goal is what my memory tells me
Shouthhampton? I don’t remember many shots from him so fluffing his chances at city doesn’t change the fact that he has a three in three goal record this season

And finally last but not list. Football is a game with real money emotions people, and employer employees relationship
I’m bringing this up for two reasons. If walcott thinks he’s being under utilize on the flanks then he has the right to go to the boss’s table like you’d take a query to your boss
And those putting kosielny in their chealsea line up and giving their reason as he needs some game time, you don’t do that in crunch ties
Respecting the fact that he equalised for us, I’d also like you not to forget that lescott scoredthat goal in kosielny zone and that he almost cost us the game when he played his clearence into aaguero. (Oh if that had been done by squillachi or, djorou or even metersacker arsenal fans would be killing them )all am saying is and I’ve been saying this since last season is, metersacker is the most permanent arsenal defender because he is different. He’s not the fastest which means he’s not up in attack at every opportunity and he reads the game faster than the other two so better get used to it and know that the only partnership you may never see is squillachi metersacker because they ar the same type. Ian Wright is a f**king legend! A quality finisher and always wore his heart on his sleeve! He was my idol growing up! For those doubters out there you clearly haven’t got a clue! If you did have a clue you would know that Sir Ian Wright is 2nd on our all time goal scoring list with 185 goals in all competitions!

I can’t remember the last time Walcott’s goal was a match winner. And all I remember are that his goals are of only one time – speeding in from the flanks – you do a replay of all his goals – they all look the same. Good for minor teams, pointless with big, prepared teams.

No, unless he significantly improves his arsenal of strengths, he is just a speedster speeding to nowhere.

About Wrights comments, i would like to believe him but i just cant forgive or forget the time when Henry was considering leaving us for barca, Wright told him that it is the right move for him and then said sure why would’nt he want to play for Barca, i have always suspected that Wrighty was a little jealous of Henry and understandibly a little pissed that he broke his record but if he was a true Gunner’s fan then he would have done anything in his power to keep the goal machine King Henry at our club, and i also thought that it was strange that he did’nt advise S W phillips to work under Wenger but instead he sent him to Chel$ea, Phillips could have became a good player under Wenger so if i where Sean i’d be sick about that one, at least he got paid 10 times over or more than he ever deserved.

I admit I am not a fan of Ian Wright, but I have to admit that he was a good player in his days, and perhaps a legend. However, I do not think we need a Mr Ian Wright to tell Wenger what to do. Le Prof has led us this far, and I think Wenger still KNOWS!
