Arsenal transfer rumours 13/01/11 – Legrottaglie, Upson and Almunia
We have seen some weird and whacky transfer rumours for Arsenal before, but has there been one whackier than those claiming that 34 year old Italian defender Nicola Legrottaglie is being considered?
Various news media outlets are running with the story that Arsenal are interested in signing the experienced Juventus defender as a short term option to cover the injuries that have been sustained by Squillaci and Vermaelen. This rumour must be rubbish, the manager has already claimed that he is looking for a defender who is experienced in the English league and whilst Legrottaglie has bags of experience, it is a bit late in the day for the transformation to one of the toughest physical leagues in world football.
It is a non-starter.
The Metro claim that Manuel Almunia is swiftly making for the Arsenal exit but it is hard to see any move happening this month at least, it would mean that Arsene would have to promote one of his youth goalkeepers to third choice and apart from Szczesny there are no other standout young goalkeepers at the club currently. It is too much of a risk to play the remainder of the season with just two goalkeepers, one who was still making calamitous mistakes just a matter of months ago and the very inexperienced but highly rated Wojciech Szczesny.
Again, I can’t see Almunia leaving. He will certainly be gone at some point before the start of next season but if Arsene is happy to give him his wages every week for being injured, something which he has not been bothered about in the past, then I foresee no movement on this front.
The same paper also claims that Arsenal are interested in bringing in Matty Upson. If this happens I will despair, which is probably why it will! Upson wasn’t good enough for Arsenal all those years ago and he has not improved significantly since. He is injury prone (another reason why we will probably get him!) and cheap (there is another reason!). Not that there is a problem with cheap players, but isn’t it time we saw some of that profit re-invested in a world-class signing?
I hope it doesn’t happen. But there seems to be a possibility that it will.

I love arsene wenger but dude come on stop being tight and bring in mertasacker or cahill. Does he know we play messi, villa, and iniesta next month??? Does he realize that if we don’t win anything this season cesc will without a doubt leave in the summer and god forbid samir?

wenger,what the hell is an off night. i always ask myself this guys watched the invincibles. they defended together and attacked together. stop bloody passing the ball.wenger, shooting is also part of football. the boys undermined ipswich. now every team has known tht we just defend the whole game and we might score in counter attacks. possession is no longer our key to success. in the upcoming game against westham , why cant the boys play with the same vigour as they did with chelsea
we need a silverware, otherwise those profits u so passionately talk off will go down the drain. look, u lose our best players, u dont spend, then we drop to relegation then the proifts reduce. no fans, no morale for players.
as for buying a defender, will you just pick up samba and move on. we all know westham will defend for m the 1st minute. we used to give all we have to the game thats why we were unbeatable. attractive football is winning games, teach the boys how to shoot. yesterday was the 1st time chamakh decided to shoot from almost 18 yrds in 6 months. wht!!!!

It is high time Wenger’s position in the club is reviewed. The business of a soccer club is to play football and win trophies and a club like ours which used to rule England not so long ago cannot afford to go down like the likes of leeds,liverpool etc. and yet healthy financial statements are read to us annually with no soccer returns to it,why all the profits that are not helping the club to success? For a club with trophy ambitions we have stooped too low to even consider those craps mentioned laggr who? cant even pronounce the name let alone spell and my goodness Upson.It beats all the logics why we released Sanderos,Silvestre and Campbell then come up with these.Pathetic.

It’s not really getting funny. hw r we sure we will not hv an off day on the return leg in emirate.if cahil can do the job why not pay the 20m and get him. upson! no no no…we deserve better players. wenger should put on his thinking cap and get us two quality defenders.really disappointed at yesterday’s game. the board should also start looking for a successor

The business of a soccer club??? How can anyone take your comment seriously when you call Arsenal Football Club a soccer club!! Firstly let me explain Arsenal Football Club is not just in business to win trophies. Sure that would be nice, but football is a sport and sure playing football and trying to win matches is a big part of our business, but understand, arsenal employs over 600 people only 77 of them are paid to play football. When you have followed the club for many years u will realise that trophy winning seasons are less frequent than trophy less seasons. That goes for Man united and Liverpool as well who have won the league and champions league (european cup) many more times than us, but still have more trophy less seasons than trophy winning seasons.

ah fml not matthew upson. he’s slow, clumy, injury prone- ironically just the characteristics wenger looks for in a centre back lol. i say we stick chamakh and bendtner at centre back alongside djourou and kos for the barca game, play 6-4-0 and hope for penalties

but we had goalscorers in the team, failure to penetrate the opposition because of clueless strikers.park you bus if you want but henry,wiltord or pires will find a way.

I think that Wenger should not sell at all. Some players are not playing at their best but that does that they should be sold! I am of the opinion that Arshavin and Bendtner will perform better in time, they need more confidence.

umm first of all just to GETA, some of what u say is spot on but i really doubt we r in any danger of being relegated any time soon maybe once wenger is long gone and all our players are 60 years old but now not a chance.
Fabregas is leaving whether we like it or no, win or lose fabregas is leaving he is catalonian and he wants to go home for his familys sake he loves arsenal but he loves his family and himself alot more, after all he is only human. (love the kid he is awsome best player to grow up at arsenal but wat can we do.) and on the story of the invincibles um that was a one off they were called the invincibles for a reason an no team in the world will ever match them ever.
i agree wiht everyone on the silvestre and sqilachi stories they were a waste of time and money big waste and i think wenger should have learnt his lesson and wont make the same mistake i still think Mexes and or Samba will the the best choices as Gary cahil will be hard to pry outa owen coils hands.
it is true we need a match winner RVP isnt a striker he is an attacking mid or a CF but not a goal scorer liek henry was chemakh is good to have on the bench but we never cross the ball so no use for his arial tallents, so we need a goal snatcher someone good someone proven apparently karim benzema is upfor sale on the cheap 9 mill apparently o he wouldnt go astray and he can play behind the striker or out wide too

Oh by the way everyone is forgeting we need a decent 100% proven goal keeper and i htink the only one that has been linked to arsenal that is worthy is shay given. or maybe we should spend 15mill for akinfaev or alanchev of russia both magnificent keepers

Asene Wenger needs to really style up……..there is alot of rubish he need to get ride of-the guys that contribute nothing to the cause; Diaby,etc….and by the way why does arsene source for only french players only. Those guys can some time be clumsy…..
we will never win a trophy unless wenger changes his mentallity…………..but lest make more money if the board pleases. BUT WE the FUNS that PAY the So called profits needs trophies….. Another season without a trophy is in the offing….am predicting right!!!!
