Arsenal transfer rumours Dec 23rd – Nistelrooy, Gignac, Carlton Cole and Luca Toni

Posted on December 23, 2009 by admin

The January transfer window is approaching fast, and the papers are full of Arsenal transfer news.

The news that Stan Kroenke is getting closer to a massive takeover bid at the Emirates has prompted many pundits to say that the American is keen for Wenger to buy a top-class striker in the New Year to continue their assault on the Premiership title, and even Wenger himself has admitted that is definitely going to buy, even if the target is already cup-tied for the Champions League. When asked if he would consider such a player he said: “Yes, I would,”

“We are going for the domestic title and the FA Cup as well and doing that allows you to rest a player for the Champions League or play another player in the Premier League.

“Of course I would prefer the player who can play in both competitions and so it would mean the player has the quality to play in the long-term for Arsenal Football Club.

“But we have an interested eye on the transfer window and if the right player turns up then we will do it.

“Sometimes you think that is a bargain you cannot turn down and don’t forget Arshavin got us in the Champions League last season.”

Two veterans being linked with Arsenal at the moment are Ruud Van Nisterooy and Luca Toni, and both would be considered short term solutions as they are 32 and 33 respectively, but would cost little except for their (large) wages. But they could do a job for the last six months of the season.

Nistelrooy would jump at a chance to return to the Premier League but Toni is said to prefer a return to his homeland Italy at this stage of his career.

The highly-rated Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac is more like a Wenger-type of signing. He is already scoring for fun in France, and at only 24 would represent a sensible long-term investment.

He has already indicated that Toulouse would consider letting him go in January.

Gignac said: “I am here at Toulouse, so I cannot comment on any newspaper talks,” he said.

“If there’s an offer for me then Toulouse will need to consider it.

“I’m open to a move abroad. It’s an ambition on mine to play abroad, but it’s not the end of the world.”

The last, but probably best option, is West Ham’s Carlton Cole. Yes he is out injured, but is expected to return in early January. He is big, strong, and proven in the Premier League.

Today’s Mirror suggests that Arsenal could get him for as little as £9m because West Ham are in financial difficulties, but that sounds like wishful thinking to me.

I would expect Wenger to pay at least £15m for Cole, if not more, but he is exactly what Arsenal need for now, and the future.

l really think thats all speculation….but van nestrooy would be a good buy but really wonder whether wenger will go in for the dutch striker and also wonder whether ruud can come to arsenal…gignac is the one l would really go for because he is alot younger than nestrooy….any way its upto the manager

  3. Alexmurphy says:

Cole is a good striker, but I’m sorry he’s not good enough to get into the Arsenal team.
Just being big and strong isn’t enough, vision, skill, and ability. No disrespect, West Ham isn’t Arsenal.

Yes we do need a big forward but many teams know how to okay against Cole. I’ve been watching Gignac fir the last two seasons and he is a brilliant buy!

We should have brought him last Year. Plus he has a WILL to win. That attitude that our boys showed Hull last week. Gignac is no pushover!

  4. Newmy says:

I would take Gignac! Sell Senderos for £5m and buy Gignac for £12-14m which means we only pay £7-9mill for him which all round is good business. Gignac fits the profile, 6ft1, 24yrs old, strong, fast and scores goals! French so the likes of Gallas, Clichy, Diaby, Nasri, Traore all make him feel welcome and settle quickly and last….can play Champions league!!! No brainer for me, but i am not Wenger! Inthe summer i’d love to see Arda Turan come in as longterm replacement for Rosicky/Arshavin.

  5. Deeq Ali says:

Its good news really to heart Arsenal Manager looking for a new striker. Gignac and shamakh are my prefers becaouse they are fresh players and well skils. I welcome also if Arsenal going to buy Nestelroy or Cole but not fore the future, they can play only upto One year, the last i would like to request from Arsen Wenger to buy Gignac or shamakh or both of them…. excuse me thank u.

  6. digger says:

Did you see Gignac play for France against the paddys, he couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo!!

  7. Joe61 says:

I agree with Digger. Gignac was poor against the Irish in France’s last competitive match. If Arsene and the board are serious about fighting Chelsea for the title then we need Dzeko (or someone of that calibre). But this is not enough. Arsenal need a top notch goalie and a big centre back who can also play defensive midfield (for when Song goes on African duties).

It is sad if Wenger is thinking of putting either Denilson or Diaby in that defensive slot. Although the best teams don’t always use a defensive midfielder, but at Arsenal we need it because at times our defending is not good, particularly because Fabregas cannot help much in this area, and even if he does, he will not be able to create much as he is not box to box. I will only be convinced of Diaby if he can perform week in and week out as Song suddenly did.

  8. Jerry nigeria says:

Have we thought about buying babbel?he is the kind of player i want to see in an Arsenal shirt, skillful, strong and has an eye for goal.we need a point man if Wenger still wants to stick to 4.5.1 formation.

  9. RocCityGunner says:

When it was first rumored that AW wouldn’t buy anyone cup tied, I thought then Cole is our best bet. He may not be Arsenal caliber at West Ham, but put our players around him and I bet he impresses. Like I’ve said before, Cole brings:
    1. Size and physical presence
    2. Plays great with his back to goal
    3. Great header of the ball
    4. Prem leagure experience
    5. Fast for a big man
    6. Good touch and decent passing
    7. NOT cup tied
    8. Not rediculously expensive (Villa, Dzeko)

…he is the missing type of player we need to win the league this season! We need a big target to play long ball/crosses too and to use as a link up to our other forwards.

    AW, make it happen!

  10. dean0002 says:

Is there a very obvious reason, eg. once mugged Arsene Wenger (or was once mugged by Arsene Wenger) known to all but me as to why Craig Bellamy hasn’t surfaced as a surprise candidate? Okay, his relatively diminutive stature is at odds with what we apparently want but his strength on the ball is surely second to none (certainly more than a match for most of our current players). This is otherwise someone affordable and available and not even cup-tied who really will HIT the ground RUNNING if given half a chance.

  11. john doe says:

    EVERYONE PLS LISTEN TO ME….
ARSENE ARE NOT GOING TO BUY ANYONE IN THIS JANUARY!!!!
    SO PLS STOP DREAMING Y’ALL……….

  12. Alex says:

Gignac is a fantastic talent. I hadn’t heard the rumours that Arsenal was looking at him, but was glad when I read it on this site! He has great touch, an eye for a goal, and most important, is not a lightweight like current options (Eduardo, Vela, Walcott). He can hold the ball, as well as score. Rightly or wrongly, he has managed to keep Benzema out of the France starting lineup, which at minimum shows that he is of a certain quality. I also understand (from reading above) that he would be available for Champs League. I would be very delighted to see him in a gunner shirt next month!

Another name that has been flying around (that I have not seen mentioned above) is Huntelaar. Again, I think he would be a good buy. He has played at the top of a 4-3-3 with Holland before, and is a real poacher. Although a very different player than Gignac, he is crucially not a lightweight! More of a poacher, which is arguably what we need. Negative things would include the fact that he is Cup tied for CL, but even worse, has not been playing for AC Milan and is not in his best form (unlike Gignac). Arguably, maybe a change will ignite something in him!

Nistelrooy would be interesting, but bad history with Arsenal. Too old for Wenger’s liking I reckon. Same with Toni (age-wise), plus the fact that he’s Italian, not a breed that we usually go for. Would West Ham really sell Cole? Especially to a London club? He’s injured, and i know that they are desperate to have him back in the side. Plus, do we really want to throw a new player onto the pitch fresh off injury? I’m not convinced that any of these will happen.

Final note, rumour has it Vieira could make a return in Jan…fill the void left by Song during Africa Cup…

  13. Javan says:

I think Gignac is the best option, however I think that Wenger should consider signing Antonio Cassano or Hulk of FC Porto. I also think that Arsenal need need a decent goalkeeper as well as a striker.

  14. The Grover says:

Here is a name for ya to consider. Thomas Müller of Bayern Munich

  15. Dico says:

Hulk or dzeko or cole or gignac any one of them will do.we can also try for melo or what do u guys think?

  16. tojo says:

hey.u think hulk is good no,try cole or gignac they are perfect.probably cole is the write man for arsenal but arsenal also need a defender and a midfielder but wenger will take cole.gignac is very powerful and he is one the striker that arsenal need.u see that gallas is gone, name a defender that can replace gallas, upson or david santon .don’t even think bout hulk .balolleti is also there ,why not ,he is a great man.

  17. tojo says:

hey,did you know that arsenal now is in between happy and sad.firstly arsenal is happy cause they going for title chase.secondly arsenal now is sad cuse maybe gallas and fabregas are going,so if arsenal take balolleti and cole and gignac they gonna win the title.

  18. tojo says:

hey john doe ,u think arsenal isn’t gonna buy anyone on january,u r so wrong ,are u arsenal supporter are u.JUST LISTEN MAN ARSENAL IS DEFINETLY GONNA BUY EITHER COLE OR BALOLLETI OR GIGNAC

  19. lawrence says:

to Dean 002: There is no chance in hell man city would sell craig bellamy right now, the boy’s money for them.. SIGN RUUD ARSENE, I WOULD PRAISE THE MOVE FOR LIFE!
