Arsenal’s defensive crisis – Then there were two!
It seems to be a yearly occurence that Arsenal have a run of injuries to defenders. Last season it was the centre-backs and now it is the full-backs that have dropped like flies.
On the 2nd October Bacary Sagna was lost to an ankle injury and luckily Wenger had brought in the young Carl Jenkinson as cover, but just four weeks later the youngster suffered a mysterious stress injury to his back.
On the left side, Wenger had sold Gael Clichy before the season started and he brought in an unfit Andre Santos as cover for the ever-injured Kieran Gibbs, who did actually last until the middle of October before getting a groin strain which ended up needing surgery after numerous set-backs. But by then Santos was fit enough to play but he duly followed suit and damaged his ankle in a nothing game against Olympiakos in which he could have been rested.
So for the last four weeks Arsenal have had to use all four centre-backs across the back line, which naturally led to Thomas Vermaelen limping off against QPR last week, and then Johan Djourou was duly sent off against Fulham.
This has left just Laurent Koscielny and the inconsistent Per Mertesacker as the only defenders of note left until at least the end of January.
The youngster Francis Coquelin was used in the Fulham game and Ignasi Miquel is also an option, but when Wenger finally had to put the woeful Sebastien Squillaci on the field we knew that we were really scraping the bottom of the barrell.
With this situation growing Wenger could have moved Alex Song back into defence but instead he sends Emmanuel Frimpong out on loan to Wolves (even he would be better than Squillaci at the back!) leaving little cover for Song, especially now that Abou Diaby has suffered yet another setback.
Wenger himself acknowledged after the Fulham game that there is now little that he can do, even in the transfer market. He said: “I think we have done well being short. We have lost three left backs, two right backs. What can you do? You cannot buy 10 full backs to make sure you have one in case of injury.”
Our next League game is on the 15th January away at Swansea (who have only lost one home game all season) but who can Wenger play at the back in that game if he can’t find a quality player on loan?
Surely he won’t risk putting the bad-omen Squillaci back into the fray? But who else has got the neccesary experience?

we should buy Baines and Vertonghen. In the summer we should sell Gibbs (as he is never fit) and give away Squillaci cause no one in their right mind will pay for him. Also we should sell Djourou (in the summer) cause he´s no good either.

I think maybe Vertonghen would be a good idea. In the past I have questioned the signing of Vertonghen due to the fact that he would be a solution to the problem. However I would love to se Vermaelen and Vertonghen reunited.
During this injury crisis we could play:
rb: Koscielny cb:Mertesacker cb:Song lb:Vertonghen
or
rb: Koscielny cb:Mertesacker Vertonghen lb:Djourou
I believe Djourou;s career at Arsenal should be brought into question. Is he good enough?
I would rather have Vertonghen than Djourou….

I dont understand the Professor’s policy…. he has young brilliant players like Miquel & Chamberlain but he never gives them a chance…. This is why Man City and those teams are on top because when they have injuries they have quality subs to replace them. Where as Arsenal have the likes of Djouro, Squillaci, Jenkinson, Gibbs. Nothing personal against those players but they are NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Wenger insists on buying these unproven players that through his pride and rotting policies thinks he can make them into superstars.
When it comes to defense, especially in the predicament we are in now, only PROVEN, EXPERIENCED, WORLD CLASS will do. Anything else would only be making the holes bigger. What is the problem in having two quality world class RB’s? It’s really not a case of game time, because rotation is not a problem, infact it is the remedy. The problem is Arsenal are skimping on the money that should be forked out to buy these players and pay them due salaries. That is the root of the issue here. Arsenal are apparently financially stable, we keep hearing that from Hill-Wood himself. Then why oh why can we not buy better players??
If we do not make top 4 this year, nevermind winning the title, Wenger’s position will be in serious jeopardy as it will be 7 seasons without a trophy. maybe that is exactly what Arsenal need. New management and people running the club who support the club, not Man City..you all know who I’m referring to.

Wenger is the dumbest coach in the world but it seems some Arsenal fans love him more than our team so they keep sucking his balls even if he is doing very poor! For the past 16yrs he has won 11trophies 7major ones & 4minor ones & have dragged us through 7yrs of total trophiless,disgrace,dissapointment & complete humiliation! Now here in Ghana alot of people don’t respect Arsenal any more bcos they think we are visionless!!!! We have being patient enough!!!!!!! my advice to arsene wenger is to NEVER lose a game while coaching at arsenal bcuz the minute he loses a game the wenger out posse rear their head …there were only a few legit points made here and i really cant sit here and highlight all the dumb stuff ive read on this particular discussion ….one thing that stood out is someone beggin for miquel to play and why wont wenger use him …its funny how short memories are if you remember the man city game it was miquels inexperience that caused silva to score …but like i said i cant sit here and pick out all the dumb stuff i seen too much work

I honestly don’t know why we ever got rid of eboue, he was brilliant, i thought he was just as good as sagna, well maybe a little under. He could cover either of the full back positions, could play in the midfield if needed and could also slot in on the wings, why would we sell someone who was so important to the team, okay he wasn’t ” messi ” but he has been a vital part of the team for so long and we didn’t replace him. I swear we was having to take back denilson from sao paulo, he may not be world class but at the moment, we need to play song at the back, move koscielny to right back and this is the perfect oppourtunity to play ignasi miquel ( who i think is a really good player for his age ) , putting denilson in the song role wouldn’t be the worse decision wenger’s ever made, i mean, he signed pascal cygan? Even playing coquelin in his correct position sounds just about right for a while, just until TV5 is back, coquelin was good at left back, surely cant be worse playing in his strongest position.
If in doubt, wenger just sign juan manuel vargas, taiwo, vertonghen on jagielka, all versitile enough to fit in at the back and all baring jagielka can play further up the pitch, i swear wenger just doesn’t use his brain?

@kev Every player doesn’t have to be World Class, but we can’t have every substitution to be a clown. When our players get injured we need quality backup. Just because we could have two really good right backs, doesn’t mean the one will not get a game. Did you not read what I said about rotation? You play a squad primarily suited for tougher opponents, then rotate for the next game which could be a squad more possessive on the ball. Every player will get game time, it’s not rocket science. And most importantly Arsenal financially are able to have such a team, but the board and Wenger wont have it. They would rather pickup a player for under a million and HOPEFULLY in 6 years that player becomes a star enough for them to sell for millions. Wenger is stupid in that he plays the same players over and over again, and leaves players like AOC, Miyachi, and Park on the bench. I mean Park has had 3 games, not nearly enough to prove himself and now Wenger has to go and loan Henry? How does that affect Park’s confidence? If he isn’t going to play AOC, Park, Myachi, why even bother buying them? Park is 26 years old.
Sorry but Wenger’s logic is non existent. The day Barcelona thrashed us and he still had the audacity to say ‘We are still the best club in europe’ was the day I lost my faith in him. I still don’t know why he bought Park & Chamberlain. I wonder maybe he even watch the way the likes of Arshavin,Walcott,Djourou,and Ramsey (at times) play these guys are not worth playing for Arsenal FC. His substitution some times are questionable, why should a sloppy Ramsey play ahead of inform Tomas Rosicky? He never changes tactics even when he see he really needs to in an on going game. Can’t agree more about “bad omen squillaci”. I felt that the turning point of the game against Fulham was not really when Djourou was sent off, it was when Squid came on. I felt that it was ok to play with 3 defenders and just continue attacking. Since Arsenal is an attacking team, the best way to defend is to attack! I look at Squid’s stats and out of his last 10 appearance in all competition with Arsenal, we only won 3 times. Out of his last 10 appearance in all league games with Arsenal, we only won 3 times. Seems like something just don’t go right everytime he plays. Please sell him or give him away…

Then the board and Mr Wenger selling our Top Players and not willing to replace like for like. Bringing back T Henry is a joke, this will only lead to trouble in the camp this is a Cheap way of trying to fill the cracks which won’t work. @ Jason I have been a gunner since I was 4 years old. That was 24 years ago…do the math. That it why what is happening is so painful. I am supporting my club by commenting constructive criticism. If we all just sucked Wengers nob for lack of a better phrase, we would end up worse than what we are. When people in charge feel the heat, especially in football, they are obliged to make a change, because end of the day its us fans that keep AFC going. We are the ones buying merch, season tickets etc, the bread and butter of this club. I would not bitch if I seriously didn’t think we had problems. Woah woah woah arsene wenger is the best coach there is! Why was he the number one manager of the decade…? Maybe because he was rated by guys that play football, not people that sit at home watching the games and moaning when the players dont do so well. People that understand football appreciate him. Chill down guys the league is still and I am sure wenger knows the problem better let’s not forget sagna and jack will be back soon and maybe theo will play better…I still got hope, remember last season we really messed up towards the end and I don’t think it will happen again

Sick of saying we lack quality.depth sign baines cahill and podolski just for starters before a big clear out of the perthetic back up players we have we need a strong squad to challenge for trophies instead of always coming up short and falling apart due to a lack of quality back up and strength in depth plz wenger do something and soon

Okay small thinking people Wenger’s Philosophy is not of concern the young players he has brought in and through the reserves have done well.. his choice of line up and decision making during games is what you have to look at.. remember the champions league game when we were all ready through.. he should had played the entire second team rested the key players.. that was a stupid mistake which led to us losing a LB..
I find it frustrating when the entire squad is not used for fixtures of less importance.. he claims we have depth hand has no rotation on the front line Gerviniho and Walcott..
the way he (Wenger) uses Asharvin has been stupid, play him behind Van Persie simple he also has proven to be useful on the right scoring as well as assist but he his played on the left away from his effective positions.. seriously look at his highlights..
Vertoghen should have been bought instead of mertasaker perfect cover, quality player.. personally I think if Djurou played along side either of the Belgium defenders i believe he would be much better..
his lack of effective transfers has left us unprepared defensivley mertasacker can only play in one position what is the point can’t really bring him of the bench without shuffling the back line removing Djurou or Koscienly neither are injure might I add.. waste..!

Wether u b 4 wenger or against him, blamin d board or playerz attitude, we all agree on 1 fact, smfin has gone seriously wrong with Arsenal fc. Evident on our pitch performance n fans reaction. Take dis page 4 example. If any1 thinks otherwise plz giv 1 gud reason y.

we now need vertoghen, a lb on loan and a clinical striker/winger.. Padolski is most likely and a effective worldclass midfield depending on who is available..
