Arsenal’s title chances hit by fixture list horror show!

Posted on August 27, 2010 by admin

Arsene Wenger has always considered that Arsenal are most vulnerable to dropping points domestically after they have played a strenuous midweek Champions League match, which is why there always seems to be much shuffling of players the following week.

Well this season Arsenal have been handed a huge disadvantage, with nearly every Group Stage match being followed by a crucial Premier League match away from home, while their biggest rivals for the title (including Spurs) have been given simpler tasks all round on the weekends after Champs League games.

I have made a complete list of each team’s fixtures so you can see for yourselves

Man Utd fixtures – Liverpool (H) Sunderland (A) Stoke (A) Wolves (H) Blackburn (H) Arsenal (H)
Tottenham fixtures – Wolves (H) Aston Villa (H) Everton (H) Bolton (A) Liverpool (H) Chelsea (H)
Chelsea fixtures – Blackpool (H) Arsenal (H) Wolves (H) Liverpool (A) Newcastle (A) Tottenham (A)

Now compare those lists with Arsenal’s and you will see exactly what I am talking about:
Arsenal fixtures – Sunderland (A) Chelsea (A) Man City (A) Newcastle (H) Aston Villa (A) Man Utd (A)

Because Arsenal always play their Champions League matches at such a high tempo, they are much more likely to be exhaused afterwards compared to teams like Chelsea, who seem to stroll around the pitch waiting patiently for their chances to come.

Who agrees that this fixture list could have serious consequences for Arsenal’s title chances?

A passing comment – I think we play more relaxed football away from home when it is the home sides agenda to make the attacking part of the game and we can then counter, which we do with good effect. If we don’t get a new keeper it really does not matter who or where we play.

Surely if we stand any chance of competing with the biggest and best clubs on all fronts we have to take this sort of thing in outr stride.
i know i’m as bad as everyone else, but the arsenal seem to have developed the most enormous chip on our shoulders, we’re so interested in finding reasons why we can’t win anything these days, we’ve lost sigyt of what we are. we are the Arsenal, people should shit themselves when we turn up, home or away.

time to start getting a little more positive i think.

  11. Mohamed Zubairu says:

I agree that these fixtures are not quite favorable but there can be a way out – given our depth this season. It is a good thing that our squad oozes with quality players. When we have away champions league fixtures, we should reserve our more physical players for the premiership games. We should use Eboue instead of Walcott and one of our central defenders that can play defensive midfield along with Song and Gibbs on the left wing for the premiership games. This is necessary because the premiership is more physical than the champions league games. Arshavin, Walcott, Vela, Nasri an Wilshire should play the CL games and be on the bench for the Premiership games following.

What’s the point of complaining? Just get on with it and show the true mark of winners! I repeat, this is the last season for excuses as we have more matured, better quality players in depth. I am not happy you brought up this comparison as it could prepare in the minds of players and the manger what excuses they can now make when the fail again. Please write on the positives or put your pen firmly locked in your closet!

  26. GoonerVance says:

Well, let’s hope Bendtner, Vela, and Chamakh are good enough by themselves to win either in the CL or against these big English clubs.

Now that we have cover in the back and we’ve always had a deep midfield I still worry for the front line, not that Arsenal doesn’t have enough bodies, but is there enough quality in Vela and Bendtner to carry the load.

Utd and Spurs have been quiet in the transfer market. I guess we see where they have decided to put their money this year!

Spurs must really be splashing the cash! No calls on handballs in CL, Stoke’s non-goal last weekend plus this fixture list. Ol’ ‘Arry must be smarter than we thought.

  33. arsenal_boy says:

The teams in Arsenal’s Group Stage are not too strong, so if Wenger can put some “second choice” players in the squad in Champions League, I think that it is no problem. Wenger should give players in the first team more break and provide more changes for young players like Wilshere, Gibbs, Vela, Bendtner, Ramsey to play in Premiere League and Champions League instead of only using them for League Cup.
