Arsene Wenger is NOT scared of spending Arsenal’s money – It’s the Board
Arsene Wenger doesn’t mind spending by KJ
It is a popular media ‘fact’ that Wenger doesn’t like to spend money but I want to question that notion as I think it’s wrong. Recently, the call for Wenger to spend has been furiously spread by the media and Arsenal fans alike. It is a justified outlook as I myself can’t see us getting anywhere next season without serious reinvestment by Wenger. However, I feel he isn’t actually the reason we don’t spend, it seems to be more to do with board policy rather than Le Prof’s philosophy.
I remember just before the Man Utd tie at the Emirates last season which we won, Arsene was in a Skysports interview where he assertively said: “I will pay £30 million I will even pay £40 million if I find the right players.” It was out of line for Arsene Wenger but I felt he was telling the truth.
Before the departure of David Dein and When Wenger was in the prime of his career, he shelled out £13 million for a certain Sylvan Wiltord who ended up as a rotation player for Arsenal. Back then, that sort of money would have been considered £20 million. Even more interestingly, he spent such a large amount of money on someone who wasn’t the main man at Arsenal; he was never going to be a key player. But Wenger insisted on his purchase and got what he wanted because he knew of Wiltord’s talents. This may seem like I’m blabbering a bit but it shows that Wenger himself is inherently not scared of spending large amounts of money.
We also have to take this transfer window into account, it was confirmed that we’d been in talks with the agents of: Mata, Phil Jones, Cahill, Samba, Jagielka and many more. These are ambitious targets for a man who is supposedly scared of spending. Mata would have set us back a good £25 million. Unfortunately we lost out because of wages but that’s a different story all together.
I think Arsenal fans are giving the wrong reputation to Wenger when really it’s the board to blame for the lack of world-class signings.

I totally agree! I think he has worked with the board to ride the financial storm after our amazing home was built. Now we are starting to turn some real profit he WILL spend! Our only stumbling block is competing with ‘the others’ on wages. First signing, RVP 4 year deal £130000 p/w!

Honestly it doesn’t matter who is the person behind the policies at arsenal any more. A few years ago we had the luxury of Round table debates over who was to blame and what should be done to fix it. All of this It’s Wenger It’s the board does nothing but divide the fan base and make us into a screeching rabble.
Something has gone horribly wrong at arsenal. We never were a high spending team overall in the transfer market and wengers brilliance was what made us the team we are. Some of the players he plucked out of nowhere and made superstars kept arsenal at the top.
Now The superstars are all getting sold and the youngsters have no one to learn from which denegrates the whole system.
The fans need to find a single voice and force change otherwise we will drown in our own debt and become mid table mediocrity.

Its about time an article like this was posted!! Wenger is not the owner and all the board members, he’s the manager, he manages the team, the players, the club. The financial constraints are being put upon him, why do u think they support and back wenger so much, they know he’s doing what he can wile being ripped off with the finances. They give little and fail 2 realise as fans we expect much. Wenger is in the front line getting all the blame, if he exposes what the constraints are like financially the owners won’t be happy. Its about time they realise if we want to compete with big spending clubs wu think they can buy the league we gonna need some proper investment in players

yeah right ,aw wants to spend hundreds of millions but the board wont let him …spare the bullshit and sucking some aw dick …aw said it himself in the winter transfer window each year “we actually don’t need another player” and in the summer you don’t hear a word from him …the board and aw are in it together ,why is it that mystery surrounding the emirates and all that we are left with is our own speculations ? … if aw was not a hypocrite he would have come out and said “people,we have this strategy at the moment ,we want to pay all our debt as soon as possible and wont be able to spend much ” ,and i would have understood that perfectly ,and wenger would have been backed up by the fans even at the moment when we are doing really bad …but no ,he chose to lie ,to make promises that he never keeps ,to do everything his way without any questioning ;it’s not the results that anger the fans ,it’s that hypocritical, stupid and deluded attitude that aw has

Wenger isn’t afraid to spend. Look at the player sales vs players bought in pre-emirates. Bar one year where we sold anelka we were spending more than we were selling. The current policy of selling the star players year after year is blatantly the boards to pay off debt. Wenger has done an amazing job keeping us at the top during our time in the emirates with limited funds, it just happens that this year we have a bad/lazy/useless crop of players due to lack of investment from kroenke. If arsene is given a sizable transfer fund and the cash from player sales im pretty sure he will work his magic and pull some top class players out of the bag. Our defensive options are very good but just as one of our defenders are getting into top gear another one or two get injured which is very unlucky, as we have been with current fixtures. In arsene I trust.

I wonder what happens when a player enters Gazidis’ office for a cotract negotiation. I’m imagining something like him having no idea who the player is, whether he plays for Arsenal or is a new signing, and saying “we’ll offer you 60k a week”. If you are Johan Djourou you say “yes please I love this club” but if you’re Samir Nasri or Juan Mata you say “hell no, i’m not taking a pay cut”. It sounds ridiculous but how else do you explain all top players turning the club down based on wage offers being too low and all players who can’t get into the team being paid above 50k ?

@Bruce Right on mate. The fact that Wenger is silent through this whole thing shows me he lacks integrity and therefore his main interest is not success and silverware anymore. He should be frustrated as hell that he is not getting adequate funds to do his job properly…look what is happening as described in the post, people ARE BLAMING HIM for the lack of new quality signings. His head is in harms way here, not anyone else. But what does he do? Instead of confronting the board about this, he sits back and continues to fill his 3 bags, as long as he gets his pay check from the board, he doesn’t care. He looks after the board, and they look after him. That is why THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM, Wenger, that Man City supporter Gazidis, Kroenke need to piss off out of our club. They are all rotten thieves and I have lost respect for all of them.

I believe that if we do sell rvp, then wenger will spend massively. I would like a more selfish forward bought in that doesn’t rely on having to pass 40 times in the box to shoot or isn’t afraid of having a solo effort like when henry made spurs look dumb. I would like to see players bought in that will have a pop from outside the area.

The worst sale of all the stars was Fabregas. I know he realy wanted to leave but to sell him for £25m when Spurs refuse a bid of £40m for Modric…just shows the direction the clubs intend on heading. Modric wanted to leave also but Spurs refused to sell, why?Because they owned his contract and didnt have to unless it was beneficial for their club. I am a huge Arsene Wenger fan i think hes 1 of the world’s best but I also believe that people do have a time span and people can get into a comfort zone. I think change is needed at the club im not sure in what department exactly but something is very wrong at Arsenal.

We dont have money and we have a very restricted Wage structure cause of Wenger
he decides the wages not the board
why give Almunia 60k a week
Chamakh also earns 80k a weeks and even Squallc earns something around 60k a week
we i agree we pay good wages but for Mediocre players
if the sell these players we can easily get one quality player and upgrade Van Persie’s contract to 160k week
BUT ITS NOT HAPPENING AS LONG AS WENGER STICKS WITH DEADWOOD AND DOESNT SELL THEM WE WILL NOT ATTRACT PLAYERS

Tribalfootball states that if we don’t make top4 it will cost us 45m pounds and will leave Wenger only 10m to buy. Surely the board will not allow us to slide further? He needs at least 70m to buy quality and rebuild our Arsenal. Sell deadwood now and get as much as we can so we can buy Gotze, Podolski, Marin, Vertonghen and also Hazard. Wow, think of that!!!!!!

Another bollox article. AW, who I have supported all along is responsible for everything. He sets a players valuation and the wages. He decides when and what to spend. The reason we cannot get rid of the dead wood is because of the massive wages he has put them on. But, the board are in the wrong for not making him spend more money and for allowing him to pay such high wages. We have one of the highest wage structures in the Prem. And don’t forget that the transfer fund includes wages.

Wenger is not the problem but the board. He is just an employee who could get sacked if they deem fit. Everyone says spend big but money alone is not the issue. Chelsea spent 75 million pounds on two players alone and there is rumour that he’s going to get 55 mill for summer. How will he compete with them in the market where a player could worth his vote? The man has been giving his best to us and I wonder which manager will fill his shoe if he decides to leave. Let’s give him the support he craves for. Go Arsenal gooooooo

Wenger isn’t the problem. It’s the board plane and simple. That said, some have suggested the Wenger should blah blah blah to the board. It’s not his style. Wenger isn’t gonna get into a bitching contest and bring anything out in the media and start a war between himself and the board. It’s simply not his style. I don’t think we’re ever gonna know what goes down between the two. It woudn’t benefit anyone at Arsenal in the public view if there was a stalemate between the board and Wenger. It sure would make the fans happy if Wenger would stand up and pseudo-admit it’s the boards fault for his lack of spending but again, not gonna happen. Everything is about making things look pleasant at Arsenal and they fall back on the “look at our profits” as the stop-gap between acceptance and mutiny by the fans. If the CL spot goes, RVP goes, etc. then there will be huge question marks that need answers and I hope then Wenger will throw caution away and stand up for the club he obviously loves.
In other “financial” news, look at United’s Financial sheets:
“Manchester United’s cash reserves fell by 100 million pounds ($158 million) in six months partially to finance an investment in a roster.
As a result of spending that also took in stadium improvements and a bond repurchase program, the Old Trafford bank balance dropped from 150.6 million pounds to 50.9 million pounds ($238 million to $80 million) to Dec. 31, the club’s quarterly accounts revealed on Tuesday.
United spent 5.3 million pounds ($8.4 million) in the three months ending Dec. 31 buying back bonds that were issued two years ago to raise 504 million pounds (then $762 million) to replace long-term financing and reduce debts to hedge funds.
United has spent 92.8 million pounds ($147 million) repurchasing that debt – more than the 80 million pounds (then $130 million) received from Real Madrid in 2009 for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The club’s debt, resulting from the 2005 takeover by the American Glazer family, stood at 439 million pounds ($694 million) at the end of 2011 and incurred almost 24.5 million pounds ($39 million) in interest payments in six months.
Although the debt was down from the 508 million pounds at the end of 2010 it rose again in the final three months of 2011 by 6 million pounds ($9.5 million)
However, United’s moneymaking abilities appear to be undiminished, with 175 million pounds ($277 million) in revenue in the six months ending Dec. 31 – up more than 10 percent on the same period a year earlier due largely to a rise in TV income and a new training jersey sponsorship deal with express delivery and freight firm DHL.”
So look at where we are vs. United cash wise. Also, the last paragraph about revenue and what we can hopefully look forward to when we can renegotiate our sponsorship deals in a couple years. Again, it doesn’t help in the immediate but in the long term we look good.

This article is spot on. Do those of you who disagree with it honestly think that Wenger is provided with 100% discretion in how much he offers for a player/offers to pay a player in terms of wages? Bollox. Plus, if he had money to spend, no strings attached, why wouldn’t he spend it? Just to cling onto the excuse of not having spent it when he fails?!? Bizarre…

Who decided Scott Parker wasn’t worth £4m Wenger who decided Jose Enrique want worth £7m Wenger who paid over £10m for Gervinho Wenger who paid £10m for Arteta Wenger. Who has just given Djourou a pay rise and new contract Wenger. Don’t give me all that crap about Wenger being blameless it’s pathetic.

we’re out of transfer period now, talking about spending money doesn’t help anybody, it’s up to AW to make the best
of the actual squad and that’s simply not the case and that’s the big problem, we aren’t playing up to our skills,
first the coaching stuff has to set up a realistic tactic
which generates the maximum of our players and their abilities, second it’s up to the board to strenghten the
team in the required positions
this is something that should have been done before the
season, that was not the case, the whole football world lough at us, so who’s to blame????
fans should enjoy their game every week and see that we have a performing team and a performing manager, you don’t
need hundreds of millions to entertain the fans, you need
passion and not a manager complaining about everything but not doing his job

i have been reading countless transfer rumours and the one that has recently caught my eye us the swap of walcott and sturridge. this will mean that we wil have a superb striker partner for rvp and getting ruid of a good but inconsistent player for no fee and a great gain. their was another for a 17 year old centre back which he has apparently matured beyond his years and is a good player so he could be a good signing under wenger.
their have however been countless free agent players whoa re aparently going to join us their is a fair few i know and possible more these are:
Flamini – could be good squad player
Montolivo – a playmaker
Adler – a german international keeper
Bosingwa – Could be a good backup right back i suppose if we can get wages down.
Berbatov – not sure bout this one
their maybe more but these are the ones i remember seeing.
Overall i feel if we get the sturridge transfer done, even if we get that 17 year old and free agents we will have a strong squad with experience but we do still need a very god playmaker/midfield general/game winner. AND TO GET RVP TO STAY!
we have a 55 million budget so we could get some of these free player sell dead wood and get 1 or 2 class players and that 17 year old and we will be a very strong side if you disagree please say why if you dont mind cos i may change my mind if your decision is the better one.

OPEN LETTER TO ARSENAL FANS
Dear Fans,
I have supported Arsenal since 1992, when everyone in the school playground suddenly happened to all be trading football cards. A group of ‘popular’ kids came up to me with their stacks of cards and asked which team i supported…i didnt have a clue about football and never had an interest. I looked at his hand a saw the top card, Arsenals Ian Wright. i muttered ‘arsenal’ and the rest is history.
Little did i know what was going to unfold over the next 20 odd years. Little did i know that this decision i took would effect the rest of my life.
I want to start by saying i love arsenal so much. and dearly. i feel the pain and glory.
Now i want every1 to remember the 80′s, who challenged liverpool? arsenal and everton. the 90′s, who challenged man utd? arsenal. 00′s, who challenged chelsea? man utd and arsenal. there is a something these three decades have in common. Arsenal.
We have a 60,000 seater stadium, that will probably be extended to 80,000 if spurs build their stadium.
We have one of the best youth systems in the world.
we have one of the best training grounds in the world.
So we are not a dead club, like brian foolnough frm sunday supplement and the rest of the media like to portray.
But we need to get rid of stan kroenke, i have been calling for a protest for god knows how long on here, the ed can comfirm tht. We need alisher usmanov and david dein back. we need the whole board and chairman especially out of arsenal football club. they are a slow cancer. i hate them with a passion. hill-wood to save his job he sold to silent stan. he robbed us of glory under usmanov. I CALL FOR ALL ARSENALS TO PROTEST AND GET STAN KROENKE OUT OF ARSENAL.
one final note. no league title for 50 odd years. no major trophy since 1991. only 2 league cups and one champions league appearance in last 21 years. all this after spending million. if i told u all this u about a club, anyone would say that this club doesnt know what the hell its doing, is in a deep deep recession of depression for its supporters and is in a complete and utter mess. well that team is tottenham hotspur. they have one good 6month period in their lives and think they are world beaters suddenly. abit like samir nasri. no spurs, u dont suddenly have 13 league titles to your name and qualified for the champs league for last 16 yrs. your still a useless club who WE have made famous.
And arsenal fans, lay of wenger. dont turn against the team. turn against the board. The media and all teams fans are destroying us. every time i talk to anyone about arsenal or football they destroy us. i’ve had enough. lets all stick together, back the team to the tilt. but..we need silent stan out. we need him out NOW. and we MUST sing wengers anme loud and proud at the emirates of sunday. REMEMBER THE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING…
thanks, Zee

Well, let’s not pretend that Wenger has no say in this. He has never spent more than 15 mil on a player and that is unheard of from big clubs. when he was trying to buy Schwarzer from fulham couple of years ago, he offered 2 mil but fulham wanted 3 mil. Wenger was not willing to up his bid to 3 mil. Do you really think that the board told him, we will give you 2 for him but we won’t give you 3? Come on, that is all Wenger. If the value of any player is above what Wenger thinks, he will not pay it and I believe that’s not the board.

Dear Admin,
Please,we are not interested in debating “Whose fault is it not to spend/strengthen the team”. What Arsenal Fans want is value for money in form of appropriate investment in the squad to ensure quality, experience and depth.

JJ, it’s probably not even worth listening to anything a football manager or club announces publicly as it’s almost always a smoke screen for something. Ccomment syaing ‘Wenger said this…’ or ‘Wenger said that…’ don’t have any merit in my eyes.
Just saying.
