Arsene Wenger must have his fingers crossed!
We have a new writer on board at Just Arsenal News and you may have seen Neill’s name in the byline of a few previous stories. He is a lifelong Gooner and would like to start off by saying that Wenger may be doing the right thing by not spending this January. I’m already looking forward to your responses….
Wenger Was Right Not To Spend If Arsenal Can Avoid Injuries
After the financial crisis of the past few years, and the looming reality that clubs will either regulate themselves or be forced to curb their spending by UEFA, it seemed that the big spending days of the Premier League were behind us.
But disappointing results from Chelsea and Liverpool have led their management to make desperate moves in order to save their seasons. Liverpool spent around £60 million for Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez while Chelsea brought in Fernando Torres and David Luiz for £75 million.
Arsenal fans hoped that Arsène Wenger would bring in reinforcements as well, although their anticipation was tempered by the fact that Wenger rarely spends big money on star players.
I think Arsenal’s squad has more quality and experience than it has had for many years so Wenger can be forgiven for not bringing anyone in. With the club still in all 4 competitions, including one Final, the club looks like it can end their trophy drought this year.
But Arsenal’s campaigns have been scuppered in the past by injuries and that does worry me. This season Arsenal have been able to cope better with the loss of star players such as Fabregas, Van Persie and Vermaelen than in past seasons.
But with so many games still ahead and more players becoming injured I worry if they could miss out on trophies again. Arsenal look particularly vulnerable in the defence. Koscielny and Djourou have put in great performances but with Vermaelen not back for a while and Squillaci not looking like he is of the same calibre I wonder if the sheer amount of games will cause the defenders to tire and falter as the season goes on.
Only if Arsenal can avoid more injuries and win a trophy will Wenger be vindicated in his decision to keep the Arsenal purse closed.

i agree to certain extent. still think we need a top central defender and keeper. great to b in 4 comps, however, 9 games in jan,8 in feb plus an international(where we always get injuries) and i fear we will fall short on 3 fronts. we should win carlin cup but its a cup and anything can happen, favs dont always win!!!

I wouln’t know why we don’t look in that direction but there are several good yet cheap keeper options in Russia & Ukrain. They may not have Premiership expy but how much does it matter for someone 3rd in the pecking order?

AW has done it again!!!protecting the owners for the expense of fans. He doesn’t care what we feel. Every one knew before the January transfer window, that Arsenal badly needs a CB, he also knew it but once again he failed to bring one even at an average price. Adam Kemp shown you all the ugly truth like a mirror, what you guys did was to break the mirror not to see the reality. Aside from Deadwoods, we have serious problem in back four, and DM with Song injured. Barcelona is coming, EPL top four have reinforced themselves huge, and for us injuries are piling up like every other year, and AW will blame it to other team playing tactics, Refs not protecting our players, and bad luck. Repeat of the past 6 years !!!!want to know more!!? I guess not!!!

why are you pessimistic? Be positive. Arsenal’s season will not be disrupted by injuries this year. Believe me God works in mysterious ways and we will set a record this season – the only team to win at Wembley three times in a single season.
Most of the pessimists were saying arsenal will not achieve anything because they dont have a world class goalkeeper but now look where they are and the emeragency of Fabiansiki and Chesney. Pessimists had also started about a weak defence but Kozzer & Djouro have silenced them now they are at injuries but I tell you arsenal will cope. the squad is large enough this year such that in the 1st half of the season the absence of Fab4, RvP10 and Verm5 was not felt that much.
Now we have lost Nasri but arshavin is starting to find his form. We have lost song and Denilson but Diaby is back and Ramsey will be back next month
At the back Vermalean will be back in 3 weeks. so why being pessimistic

just to add we players like Walcott, wilshere who have stepped up and Bendtner who looks he is starting to find good form this season. I have a strong feeling that we are going to eliminate Barca this year. Last year we had injuries and they ran all over us.

@Ezat – you know nothing… the other teams (chelsea and liverpool) only reinforced there teams because they were rubbish.. we arnt 5th and 13th in the EPL are we? so why the hell do we need to spend £60 million on under-performing or overpriced half stars? arsene wenger is not cheating us.. hes just not an idiot like you.

sure at the end of the season we will be at 4th place and wenger will say out goali is very young he is just 20s …and it was good experince for him and he had learn lots built confident from last season. we should sell wenger first so we can buy good players.

we’re more than 2 losses out of the top 4. Tottenham have to win 3 games – we’re 8 points in front of them. So 2 losses are allowable – but with 14 league games – potential 4 FA Cup games – Carling Cup Final – and the potential of a 7 games in the CL to get in between now and end of May, thats gonna be some fitness levels. However, we’re 5 points off the top in the league, got Barca in 12 days time, and have survived reasonably well without the likes of 5Vermaelen, 4Fabregas, and 10Van Persie.

I think many fans forget that in case of emergency Sagna can play centre back, as it was his initial position at Auxerre. Eboue can slot in right back. We have more depth than some fans realize. Wilshire can play in song’s position if necessary; Song can play CB very well (didn’t he against Barca last year?)
The way I see it is this year we are better off than last when we have 7 guys missing against Barca.
Go Get Em Gunners!

Bilzo, now you see the big hole in Arsenal Defenders!!!! a team strong enough to score 4 goals in 45 minutes, then due to very very very weak defense receives 4 goals from a team who lost his star striker! now all those optimistic gunners wake up and smell the fresh scent of coffee!!! AW is a cheap cheap manager who know nothing or maybe he knows a lot but the owners don’t give him fund to buy!!!! You can’t RUN A FOOTBALL TEAM LIKE THIS!!! it is joke when he has done nothing to patch the holes in defense!!! shame on you AW!!!!

I hope Ezat feels like a total idiot now we are 1 point behind Man United (be it with them a game in hand) and we have beaten Barcalona in the first leg? We might not win every trophy going but we aren’t a bad side considering how much we have spent and won’t go into debt and out of business in the next 10 years.
