Arsene Wenger on Cesc and Nasri, and when to sell one of his stars
Arsene Wenger is much admired for the way he runs Arsenal as a successful business, and he is widely admired in the Far East for having the confidence to stick rigidly to his principles of running his business.
So during the recent tour of Malaysia, Wenger was asked to address an audience of top businessmen to explain his philosophy and his business model. This Q&A session was reported in todays Telegraph and makes very interesting reading, especially the parts where he talks about his transfer dealings.
Here is a few relevant extracts for Arsenal fans:
Q Is there a difference between managing talent in business and talent in football?
AW There’s a difference between going to a company in the morning, doing a job, or walking out in front of 60,000 people and the next day be analysed by everyone in the world. Inhibition is the enemy of top level sport, because you have to walk out there and say, ‘look at me my friends, I am the best, I will show it to you, and you don’t impress me’. That demands a special skill to deal with these kind of people. They need to meet their needs, and their needs are exceptional. As soon as they feel that they do not meet their needs, they will walk away from it, because they feel ‘I am at a level, and this guy cannot offer me what I want’. It’s the same for a company.
Q Is that the situation currently with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri?
AW It’s part of it, because the needs are not only football-related, they can also be financial or sometimes emotional. In the case of Fabregas, he is torn between Barcelona, where he grew up, and Arsenal, where he has been educated. It’s not financial. Nasri is the same: they both love the club and are very happy with us. Hopefully we can keep them both happy here.
Q When a player comes to you asking for a better contract, what variables do you consider when deciding whether to let him go, or keep him?
AW There is a moment in the life of any employee who is very strong, who walks into the company in the morning and he makes you feel that you need him. That is natural. They want to look strong and give off the impression ‘without me, you are in trouble’. That’s a test as well.
Q When do you say, ‘I have to let him go’?
AW When he starts to disturb the efficiency of the company and only you as a boss will know that. Sometimes it’s difficult to know, because when a guy is very important at a company, the natural run of that company goes through him. That has a disadvantage too, because it keeps other employees with qualities quiet. Then if this guy goes, sometimes you see others step up and take responsibility and you didn’t even know they had it. Sometimes you have to take these decisions without really knowing what will happen afterwards. It’s always better to get rid of someone who is too disturbing rather than keep him because he has the quality.
——————————————————————————
So, if Fabregas has definitely told Wenger that he wants to leave, does that mean that he will have no choice but to sell him so that he doesn’t “disturb” the other players……

fab out and nasri staying is the best option (if nasri signs a new contract instead of leaving for free next year). I hope the Mata deal can reach an agreement. I won’t ask more offensive signs. Let’s not forget miayichi, chamakh, jet and vela before asking for new ones. these last deserve a chance.
Not that I would complain if we sign hazard or lukaku.
The defensive issue seems to be more complicated as wenger seems to refuse to pay more for a defender than he did for arshavin. Cahill is a good prospect but come on his price is a joke! for that much we could get thiago or rolando… but I say one word : vertonghen! Best option to me. Solves DM and CB issue in one shot!
come on arsenal!

About time the real truth came out.
Been saying it for a while, Cesc was not good for AFC in ANY way in the last 2 seasons, and was the cause of AFC starting to self-destruct.
He must go before they finaly do.

If you read the reply to the second question AW more or less says that Fabregas’ situation is an emotional one not financial. Then he says Nasri is the same too.
What the hell does that mean?
That Nasri has always supported either clubs from Manchester? That Nasri doesn’t want to leave because they are offering him a higher pay? What a load of bull

I believe Fabregas must leave AFC this summer. It hurts to say that, however I believe this is our last chance to try and win a trophy with the existing squad and thus players must have a 100% focus on Arsenal next season. If we’re unsuccessful in doing so, I believe we’ll see more Arsenal players leaving the club including such as Sangna, Diaby, Nasri, Arshavin..

If Fab goes which most people would believe he will, Barcelona will then have bought 2 of the most coveted and notorious players in the transfer market with the addition of Alexis Sanchez recently.
It’s going to be tough to compete with Barcelona for the next few years, but I hope we keep Nasri and not offload him to another English team. That would be a travesty as we all know he’ll come back to haunt us.
Few may agree but I think we’re going to have a better season than last year. Will be interesting to see Gervinho, Jenkinson and Miyaichi integrating and hopefully we can get 2 more signings. If both signings come in the centre back positions, this would be a Gunner’s dream. Even if we get another midfielder and another centre back it’s still good news. Regardless another 2 signings will be needed to fully solidify and balance the squad. I believe Wenger will have to buy another midfielder to replace Fabregas although we have Nasri and Ramsey who can both fill that void. With Vermaelen back I think Wenger will buy just one CB to work with him with the likes of Koscielny and Djourou developing well. In the bigger games we might see Vermaelen move to left back with Djourou and Cahill/Dann/Samba/Jorgensen at Cb and Sagna at RB.
I really hope Miyaichi replaces Arshavin on the left wing as I think he’s a better passer and crosser. Additionally, he has more tricks and knows how to look up while dribbling.
Don’t worry Gunners, we’re up for bigger and better things next year! Let’s trust Wenger, he will spend!

i think Cesc was always going to leave, the only trouble is that we have left it so late to get someone Really Quality in to bolster midfield.
Mata has been convinced to stay in spain. Arturo Vidal has gone to Juve while this saga has been happening. PSG have their Claws into Eden Hazard.

i agree we need a center back (cahill) striker(benzema) and left back (vertonghen)to look badass on paper but not evenrthings looking so bad ….
vermaelen and van persie keeping fit the hole season .
top ranked french player according to castrol gervinho joined us.
cesc and nasri may not necessarily leave and even if then do there is lots of money coming in (and wenger is under pressure this time to buy so lets be patient all)
walcott can impress this season .
szczesny,ramsey ,frimpog,gibbs,traore,jenkinson can do a WILSHERE this season .
wenger can go for benzema and ozil with the money for fabregas
(just saying )
and most importantly alumunia ,bendtner and denilson are leaving !!!:D

Whatever happens now to fabragas is one fact , When this Saga is eventually finshed and he goes to Barcelona there will only be one fact, he will be warming up the bench , it will take him two seasons before he gets a look in , look at the previous players we sold them , Van Bronkhost, Petite, Overmars,Helb,Henry … How many of those would you say progressed once they left Arsenal , Fabragas could have been a Legend if only he won something at Arsenal for the Fans , he is well respected but no legend , when he goes to Barca he will relize what he had , the grass is not always greener .. as for Nasri Arsenal made him and again let him go if any player wants to leave Arsenal they must be released no ifs or buts .. Arsenal will become better with better players that want to play for arsenal not just for the money .. we are not to far from glory , One thing to ask if Wenger was the Manager of Chelsea ,Man City,Man Utd or Liverpool would he still be in charge if they went six years without a trophy???? i very much doubt it .. its time for a change ..

I think Arsene should release Cesc as he became a long-time disturbing issue.
In return, Wenger should convince Nasri to continue with the club, coz Nasri can comfortably fill that position.
Again I would advise Wenger to reach an agreement with Valencia on Mata so he can add the squad with quality.
I hope this season will be different.

Barca can’t afford Cesc. They know he wants to come and they keep making public pleas for him but what they really need to do is come up with the cash. That is the situation. He is a top player who demands a top price and if any club wants him but can’t meet that price they aren’t going to get him. It’s that simple.

lol.i just wish one dream should come true that is arsenal should sign eden harzard, and oh does anybody has arsene wenger’s phone number because my junior brother his name is arema and is a world class top striker and he scored 50 goals in a street tournament and the best part is that he is still 7yrs old and i am sure wenger would like this kind of deal because he just need to pay 100,000pounds for him and weekly wage of 5,000 pounds since squilashit is in about 60thousand pounds.clowns

Fabregas should be made to Leave. His heart is for Barca and not Arsenal. By his acts, he has made known his intentions. His presence will just demotivate some of the key players. He will make just about half of the number of games per the season.
Lets take good money from Barca and go out there for Mata and other top defenders.
What is happening to Matersaker’s move.

Wenger was also talking about himself….when a director did it before even if after six years he didn t make profit( win any cup medal)… The fact that he did before he stay by his old principles but the games of the market has changed ( you need big English players like samba nowaday to win something)…. But even if the employees are telling to make some changes he ( wenger) won t mere to them…. But he will go for people like squillachi….ah ah ah

For all his talks, wenger remains a flop in the eyes of his peers unless he kicked out deadwoods and buy worldclass players. Dont give me the crap about $$$$. NOthing comes cheap…even denilson, almunia, they earna bomb of a salary.

omg,so bendtner and denilson is not d only one whos played “OUT OF POSITION” by wenger.so is arshavin(dats wat i read),song was actually a centreback, rvp was actually a cam and so on.now who wouldnt be dishappy if such a treatment is given to them????this is wat nasri said:
“That’s where I play best, that’s how I was formed. In every age group at youth level, I often played through the middle. I’ve been playing out wide for two years with Arsenal but feel more at ease in the centre of the pitch.”
and mind you ppl, dont expect wenger 2 sign a bunch of players, utmost just one more signin i guess.dats wat wenger said,”WORKING HARD 2 SIGN A DEFENDER”.

No professional manger sells his best players .you never see Manchester or Barcelona do that .We need to be a champion next year and we can not do that by selling our best players .selling Eboue for four millions ???? there is worst players who have been sold for three time that price ,don’t forget that he was in the team that gone all the way to the final of the champion league
