Arsene Wenger Talks About The Arsenal Transfer Dilemma

Posted on July 21, 2012 by JG

Operation “Clean House” Proving Difficult

We all knew this was coming. The difficulty offloading the players that do not want to play for Arsenal is even more complicated when trying to get “top dollar” for them (when they aren’t worth nearly the asking price).

Wenger was interviewed today talking about how he would like to bring in 2 new players but can’t because of the obstacles that are called Bendtner, Chamakh, Squillachi (and maybe others we don’t know about) Wenger wasn’t specific when saying which players are arranging departures. Here is what he had to say:

“We are still looking to add one or two players but it depends also on how many go out because we have to respect the squad number,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“It’s important to respect that so before we get players in we have to get some players out. That has not happened yet, the market is very quiet.”

“I cannot tell you anything concrete about the situation [regarding those who might leave] because if they are not finding clubs they will stay here and be players of the squad. At the moment I cannot give you any concrete or clear indication.”

Yeah, I would think “the market” would be “very quiet” for the players that we have languishing in the unwanted section of the club. I mean come on, look at this guy…he hates us.

Many said that the scenario of being “stuck with the dead weights” would happen because of how undesirable they are, and that looks like a more accurate prediction for every day that passes by without any of them leaving the club. In my opinion, if you have to let a couple of them go on the free to bring in players who at least WANT to play for us, then so be it, cut your losses; but then again, that would be a terrible piece of business. Anyway, let us know what you think.

Letting the below average players go for free is not a bad business proposal. We often got them for peanuts anyway and any business has to write off bad investments in order to diversify to such a degree, that they can return to happy profitable ways. Arsenal require better players and shouldn’t waste time with it. Let’s get the business done now so that the players and new players can train with each other and create some sort of atmosphere in order to us to finally challenge for anything next season.

    Vela, Denilson, Almunia… Gone
    Arshavin… 50% exit chance (Zenit)
Squillaci… No Chance… So bad no one wants him.
Djourou… I think we need him – 4th choice CB.
Lets hope some of the deadwood goes. I can’t think of anyone who would give Sebastian Squillaci 50k a week. Still we should get M’Vila, Affelay or both :P .

question is do we have funds available to secure new faces or are we waiting on the funds to come from the outgoing players? Its almost always the same situation for arsenal every summer. Unwanted players stayin, super talents leaving. I reckon the worst piece of business being done is payin huge wages to substandard players. I hope we shift them soon coz if not we starring down the barrel of uefa cup. Dare i not think of the worst… This is a really disheartening time for us but lets keep the faith

You can also throw in RVP screaming, “Nooooo!”, when Wenger hauled off Oxlade-Chamberlain for Arshavin (that was a bad decision anyway).

When I have stock I can’t move, rather than leaving it sitting around, losing money, I keep reducing the price until someone thinks it’s a bargain and “Hey Presto”, it’s gone. I might have lost cash on the deal but I would have lost a whole lot more, if it sat around. I’m fortunate, I don’t need to pay my unwanted goods, the club does. To that end it becomes even more important to give it the “elbow” asap or even sooner. The problem with some of our “stock” is, no one wants them and they don’t want to go elsewhere and be paid peanuts. They would rather sit around until their contracts come to an end and take their unearned high wage/geld(money). You can’t blame them, I’d do the same. It’s a dilemma but one of our own making. The only way out of the mess, is to offer some sort of “pay off” to terminate their contract, or get them to a club, any club, and make up the difference in their pay and at least save some funds. It’s a tricky situation but you have to ask, who gave the Squill such a long contract? It beggars belief.

The problem with our deadwoods is not the transfer fees but the wages they are recieving in Arsenal. Fiorentina backtrack from signing chamakh due to his wages, squillaci to evian was also premature due to the same problem, only Zenith can sign Arshavin because of his wages,do you know that Arsenal is subsidizing some percentages of Denilson ‘s wages. The only remedy is for Arsenal to sell these DWs at very cheap rates.

According to many sources the player wenger is most desperate to get rid of is arshavin. Firstly because he believes he can get a decent price for the little russian and secondly because he is very interested in signing either affelay or cazorla. Both play in very similar positions to arshavin (lw/cam). This would mean that lukas podolski was actually bought to replace van persie with giroud providing a very decent alternative. I wouldn’t mind seeing either cazorla or affelay in an arsenal shirt next season bt its the spaniard that I’d prefer wenger to sign. Imagine a midfield three of song, wilshere and arteta( m’villa if he signs) providing the ammunition for a attack with cazorla, walcott and podolski in it. I can already hear the screams of ferguson and Mancini lol. Not to mention the strength we’d have on the bench for once (gervinho, the ox, rosicky, giroud, ramsey, coquelin etc)…. Robin who?

  38. SD says:

The players can be sold, but not without lowering the asking price considerably. Teams will have to pay less so that they can put the rest of what they would have paid into the budget for the wages the player is making. It’s the only way. But I really thought Arshavin and Bendtner would be the two that would have no problem finding places that would both pay the right price and could handle the wage costs. And now it seems that Chamakh is more wanted than those two. I still think these are the three (four if you include Djourou) that could still play well for the team.

As much as Arsenal fans seem to overrate our own players, I see too many underrating Chamakh and Arshavin. Remember that Chamakh played extremely well as soon as we got him, only to be benched for RVP when he came back. He lost his form a bit, and was given almost no time on the field. But toward the end of this year he was given some minutes and looked good in my opinion, setting up a goal, and setting up what should have been a couple other goals as well. Arshavin is still the most creative player we have and is also better than anyone else we have at handling the ball in traffic. I think he would play well as our CAM, but I gave up on that a long time ago so now I just hope we can get a decent price for him and he can move to somewhere that he is wanted. Bendtner is also a good player. He isn’t quite good enough to play in the middle in Arsene’s system, but he will still be a very good player in the right system.

Some of the others should be tough sells though. Squid especially. No one will pay for him, so I get the feeling we will be paying him to ride the bench til his contract runs out. Otherwise we may buy out his contract at some point to make room on the 25 man roster. I think this is the bigger issue. Arsene is not willing to pay wages to anyone over the 25 man roster, and that is why we have to sell before we buy.

Once you get past that, then you can talk about Arsene overpaying players and picking up cheap alternatives (which sometimes turn out to be absolute steals of course).

Some one will come in for bender, he is a decent striker, had a good euros and has expressed a desire t leave, not to mention is young. And chamakh will be able to find a new club. What matters is the wages and whether or not they are willing to take pay cuts. Arsenal might also make it difficult because they might want more money and stop clubs being interested.

Selling squilachi is going to be trouble… The guy is content to sit on the bench and take his massive wages, why wouldn’t he be? And what other club would pay the same.

With most players, arsenal will be the stumbling block… Pay to high wages and will want a decent transfer fee. But some players, like squilachi, the club are not going to be able to get rid of so easily.

I expect some dead wood to still be here next season

Personally i think that chamakh, bedtner, denilson, fabianski, squillaci, djourou and arsahvin need to be sold, we could coup a hefty sum of 25-35 million ( if we’re lucky ) . With that and a little more investment from the board we need to sign players with top quality and to do so fast. The obvious positions are an attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder and we have been linked with plenty, I’d personally be over the moon with any, but would prefer M’vila and one of kaka or santi cazorla, i think that M’vila is a must, we need someone who loves sitting back and defending, so that we can give song more freedom to be the box to box midfielder he is proving to be, without having to cover defensively. I’m praying that this is diaby’s season, because he has pure talent, and with him, wilshere and the possibility of a solid CAM, we will have enough depth in midfield to rotate and keep our best players fit and also have healthy competition. I think that a new left back is definately in order, personally i see santos as a winger, he has been used as a winger everywhere he has played, baring the brazil national team, but they basically play wingers at full back anyway. Maybe stefan Radu or leighton baines would do the job, someone who can teach gibbs so that he can become the top left back we are all expecting. We could also do with a CB to cover for the loss of djourou and squillaci ( if they go ). Although we have kyle bartley ( who i rate highly ) we could do with another more experienced defender who would be willing to play when needed ( like what benayoun did ) but to help younger players grow, we should’ve gone for Lucio when he terminated his contract at Inter, but that wasn’t ever going to happen, i say maybe ricardo carvalho or maybe even bring back kolo toure or stephane M’bia’s ability ( and versatility ) to cover and provided competition, but also with the experience of winning trophies. Last but not least, I think that a keeper to compete with Szcezny is another priority. Even though i consider Wojeich to be one of the best in the prem and has the potential ability to be classed in the same category as Casillas and Buffon in years to come, i still think he needs to learn, take a sit back and watch someone who is a the top of the game, the likes of Sebastion Frey or Julio Cesar, both getting on, but both top keepers still and have been 1st choice for their countries and have won trophies. I know what im saying is a lot, but I PERSONALLY think it is needed to get us back to the top of football!!

As someone said, the players we want to get gone aren’t high in terms of a transfer fee, the highest (other than RVP) being AA23. It’s all down to the exorbitant wages we pay our non-playing players. Nobody will meet the wages of Squid, Bendtner, Chamakh, etc. and beyond that is the timing. The clubs out there that are interested know we want to offload them so they’ll wait till late in the window and lowball us on the offer (like Arsene does all the time) hoping were desperate to sell so we can sign Affelay, M’Vila, etc.

We got Chamakh free so any money we could make on him is a profit.

If we can’t get more than 20£ mils for RVP, let him stay. Let his run out his contract and rot in the bench if he disrespects. Personally I would love to see him play with us, some of his goals last season were phenomenal.

People think to forget our weakest link, which is defence. Of course Midfield lacks of creativity but everyone’s already fussing about it. We need quality leftback, I mean real solid rock. Gibbs is made of glass and Santos is very good going forward but feetless when defending.

Buy Mamadou Sakho from PSG. Guy’s a BEAST. He’s young (22), he’s tall, strong. He’s mainly CB but can play on the left too. I wonder if he’s convertable to be made fullday LB. And he’s unhappy at PSG and lacks of playing time. 2 years left contract so he would cost 10-14£ mils.

Yann M’Vila from Rennes. Imagine bottom midfield of Song and M’Vila. I like his temper, RVP were a badboy (still is?) and motion doesn’t hurt.

I wouldn’t mind if we raid Athletic Bilbao, Susael seems like a prospect. Also THORGAN Hazard seems like a promising youngster. We should snap him before Chelsea, easily he could choose us as both Hazard’s would be in London.

About Afellay, we should grab him to replace Arshavin if we can get him for bargain price.

This is a gradual process. Sales depend on a lot of factors and complicated negotiations and they dont just happen when afc needs them to happen. We also learned a big lesson from the fabregas and nasri sales so trust me when i say that the rest of our signings will be done at least two to three weeks before the transfer window closes. Remember also that we have signed poldi and giroud so it is unfair to say that the club is not interested in signing players. I look around and the other top clubs are in the same situation as us. Man u and totenham have only signed two new players each, just like us. So we are not doing badly at all. Wenger will sign more players and he said so in his last interview.

guys were not done in the t market we have 25 players over 21 we need to sell or loan before we add or we will do a city and have to pay the deadwood to go to reserve whilst making signings this would also drive there prices way down. i dont think money is the issue this time around

For arsenal to be title hopeful, the following remedy is recommended: Sell RPV for £25-£30M, Arshvin for £5-£6M, and Chamark for £5M, this will give you about £35-£41M. Notice i did not mentioned Benthner, we should enter a serious discussion with Burussia D. for Lawandoski while throwing Bendthner into that deal. The outcome will mean we will be spending about £10-£12M net for Lawandoski. Secondly, £10M for Santiago Carzola and lastly, £12 for Mac-Vila. The balance can go for talent acquisitions. shikana!

guys, First we need good AM, why u allways saying about M’villa transfer, we have lots of players in his position.. Alex song… Wilshere… and other MF can switch in that. First we need to sell RvP and maybe to get lorriente or Jovetic, but first we need good attacking MF something like Kaka or Snijder, on the second hand we need cover for Sagna, (LB) becouse if he get injury we have huge problems with replacement. Later we can look for Striker and M’villa (ofc) God damn, wenger do something with squad if u really want to fight against MC, MU or chelsea… enough young potencial players, we need ppls with Experience to win trophies

The only problem i know it could be is the price. These players are deadwoods for God sake. The club still wants to make profits on them. Wenger should be realistic with the prices of players or else these players will still wear arsenal shirts next season. Most of these players we got them for peanuts, and some for free. So many clubs are interested except for squillaci. Wenger has to understand other clubs know that they are deadwoods in arsenal.A player like squillaci should be released(to remove him from the payroll).Chamack can leave for 2m(after all we got him for free).Bendter can leave for 4m(he does not have a good mentality about the club,so why keeping him?).I still believe in arshavin(he creates something out of nothing).Wenger pls take quick action,so that all the players can blend with one another b4 the season commences.

deadwoods are always hard to sell but afc might have to sell for less than they want. Once this is complete I suggest they take a risk and make a 25mil bid for Ganso, 15mil bid for Santi Cazorla and 17mil bid for Mvila. Only then do i feel we can mount a serious challenge for the title. Also Niang would be a good long term signing so just sign him then loan him back fo a season

The same old story again this year. Mr Wenger and the Arsenal Board say the same old BULL during the transfer window. It hard to sell ( your asking to much for middle of the road players). It hard to buy ( it is when you want Quality players for nothing).Other teams don’t seem to have the same problems getting players. It’s all smoke and mirror’s from Mr Wenger and the Board and do you know what the Fan’s fall for it every year. Nothing is going to change as long as they are in charge.

Let’s be honest Arsenal would not be preparing for Champions League action but for RVP. Any player can be got rid of regardless of who they are but a club will never get rid of a Manager who makes them loads of money. This is why Mr Wenger will keep with his youth policy. Get them cheap and sell them on to Man city a club with Ambition. Arsenal Under the present Admin are a feeder club an also ran team.

Our midfield is the problem. Bring in KaKa and Afellay.let Frimpong(who has been busy on twitter and not on the football pitch) be backup for Song.Sell Squillaci,Fabianski, Bendtner and Djourou.let’s give Chamakh and Park another season. A 4-3-3 formation. Our team needs our support. We must win trophies next season. We need stamina and our coaching crew needs to teach the team the importance of pressing high up the pitch, collective defending and effective ball retention.I look forward to improved defending with the appointment of Steve Bould.
