Man Utd’s Wayne Rooney has taken centre-stage at Old Trafford since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, and the punters think that he is the player most likely to win the PFA Player-of-the-Year award this year.

Rooney has been backed into 3/1 favourite on Betfair at the moment.

With Liverpool’s unimpressive start to the season, the Spanish international striker Fernando Torres seems to have dropped out of the running and is as high as 8/1 now.

So it has been left to the two Arsenal nominee’s for the Balon D’Or, Andrei Arshavin and Cesc Fabregas, to challenge Rooney in the betting.

The punters can’t seem to choose between them at the moment with both of them priced at just over 6/1 (Arshavin 7.20, Fabregas 7.40)

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba are next best at 9/1 at the moment, and there are only three other players under 16/1 at the moment.

The Chelsea duo of Michael Essien and Frank Lampard are to be expected, but the surprise inclusion is the new Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

At 15.5/1 (16.50) he could be great value. He has won the first two Arsenal Player-of-the-Month awards this season and if he carries on in this excellent form he could surpass his two more famous colleagues.
