Arshavin – Arsenal won't beat Chelsea or Man Utd if we don't buy top players!
The Arsenal and Russia star Andrey Arshavin has criticized Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board for selling Emanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, and insists that the team will not be able to compete with the best unless the top stars are replaced.
He said at the beginning of the summer that Arsenal needed some players, and that was before Adebayor and Toure were sold,and yesterday he was asked in an interview with the Times if his opinion had changed after his team beat Everton 6-1.
“No. We still have to buy. That’s my opinion,” he says.
“We shouldn’t set Everton as a benchmark, we should be looking at the top teams of Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona. We should buy first-class players, regardless of their age. We should buy the ones who should improve our game. The top teams have much bigger squads than ours and that is why we have to buy.”
So what was his opinion of Arsenal selling Adebayor and Toure instead of buying?
“When you sell players of that calibre you’re bound to lose something,”
“I’d rather not comment. I don’t think that would be appropriate. Arsène understands where improvement needs to be done.”
He doesn’t seem too happy with the situation he is in. Perhaps when Arsenal beat Man Utd next week he may change his mind? But one thing is sure; When Arsene Wenger reads this interview he will want to have a serious chat with young Mr Arshavin!
Mind you, Wenger himself said that you can’t really judge how well the team is doing until they play some top teams too. He said after the 4-1 win over Portsmouth today: “Well, you go a bit too quick. I said after 10 games in the League you will see a trend and unfortunately I must say you have a break after Manchester United and then we go away to Manchester City. I am not completely convinced by the organisation of the Premier League and the whole schedule because after two games, one half of the table already has one game in hand. I think maybe we should have done it in a different way.”

Dont put words in Arshavin’s mouth. He didnt criticize Arsene or the board. All he said is that he thinks we should make a few more signings, and that we should be looking to compete with the best teams in the world. Thats all.
Arshavin hasn’t said anything that all sensible gooners don’t already know.
Is there a source for these words of wisdom? And The Sun, Mail, Star or NOTW don’t count I’m afraid.
Arshavin is right. The team needs more muscle in the midfield and another CB, but which top CB would like to be a sub? Wilshire is better than most the offensive players being mentioned and then there is Nasri and Rosciky set to return. When players are hungry for success, it can carry then a long way. Some of the most effective players are not the most skillful, like Drogba and Ballack.
