Arshavin in talks over Russia return

Posted on January 31, 2012 by admin

The Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin was visibly shaken by the reaction of the home fans at the Emirates last week when he took to the field in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and considering that he was lacking in confidence before that he can’t be very keen to wear the Arsenal colours again.

A few weeks ago, Arshavin said that he would consider his position if he wasn’t given more game time ahead of the Euro2012 tournament, and now that Wenger has promoted Oxlade-Chamberlain to starting line-up it would seem that Arshavin is even more unlikely to play.

He was left on the bench again for the FA Cup game against Villa this weekend, and today SkySports reports that the super-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala has commenced talks with Arsenal with a view to bringing the Russian captain back to his homeland.

Although Arshavin’s reputation has taken a knock in England, he is still widely respected back at home and was recently named Russia’s Athlete of the Year for the fourth time in a row.

Also it is would more than likely that FC Anzhi would give the diminutive midfielder a nice little pay-rise to help persuade him to move…….

Arsenal fans have been a little hard on him . Ye he’s going through a bad phase in his career but booing him is not gonna make it better . I agree it’s time for him to leave but just remember before this year he was an AMAZING player and has scored plenty of goals for the gunners !

Signed another 19 year old, looks like Gotze’s boot boy, shame we have to get understudies instead of the overpriced real thing.

  3. Travis Bickle says:

It’s a shame, he had such an amazing year and a half. I’m not sure what happened, perhaps it was the lack of ambition shown by the club after Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy left that he decided Arsenal was not for him?

Who knows, he was a great player for a short amount of time. He’s given more to the club than Djourou, Chamakh, Bendtner and Denilson. Thats the reason the fans booed him. He gave more, had a big dip in form and so the fans expected more.

I think it would be unwise to keep him at Arsenal. He is visibly affected by all this, and I think we should allow him to play his football in Russia where he may feel more at home.

Goodluck Arshavin! (If you do go)

So what is Eisfeld good at? Why did we buy him? What will he bring to us? Is he an improvement on what we already have? Is he just a squad player or does he have the talent to challenge Rosicky and Ramsey for a place? Questions, questions!

    YES,

The lad hasn’t kicked a ball yet for Arsenal. Reserve these questions for when he has played and they will be answered on the pitch.

Did you have the same questions about Oxe, Ryo etc. etc before they played?

I’m sure you did, but you’ve seen them both play a bit, and now you probably think they are future world class players…..

I would be very dissapointed if he will leave. It is interesting that nobody said a word about him making that pass to RVP that scored the only goal 2 weeks ago(or 3) that gave us win. And I can’t understand how we, fans can so easy give up on players, treat tham as trash and forget what these players have done for club. I bet if any of us stepped on the field and heard “booo” in our address there wouldn’t be that much excitement to play. So before we fall in love with new stars lets respect guys that brought a lot on the table in the past, because Arshavin defenitly did! I don’t remember anybody who could score 4 goals to Liverpool in one game, who brought us that important win against Barcelona!Believe me he still has a lot to offer, and we need to show that we want him to be confedent and play the old way. And booing doesnt help that much! Gunner for Life!

    @ Steve

It shows that not all Arsenal fans see a name and a price as an admission of skill and talent.

Koscielny is a prime example of this, no one knew who he was, and now he is on absolutely incredible form. Vermaelen is another, not well known, but now regarded as one of the best CB’s in the Prem (when fit)

Where did Song come from? Henry was a reject player, considered by many as a big sulk. Juve gave up on him and the rest is history. Cesc? Wilshere? where any of these players BIG NAMES? no they were trained and had the required skill to become great players.

The 4 dislikes show some Arsenal fans believe in Arsenal, and in Arsene. They have rarely let us down when finding top quality talent we have never heard of.

  15. toby says:

    eisfeld lowdown,

thomas eisfeld was born in 93 (gotze in 92) came through the dortmand youth system with goetze and was considered by many in germany to be the better prospect of the two, both technicaly gifted with eisfeld slightly more attack minded with an eye for goal.

the 2009/2010 season was to be the breakthrough year for both, however eisfeld suffered criciate ligiment damage(potentialy career ending) and has suffered for fitness and form ever since. goetze when on to break the first team and you all know the rest.

very similar to wilshere and ramsey situation, ramsey the better prospect but then suffered major injury and wilshere flew past him and broke the first team.
if hes fit and wenger actually makes an effort to play him especially next year then it could be a very good signing and bargain of the decade, but hes certainly no pup and should be competing with ramsey and wilshere before to long and not stuck with the babies at the arsenal youth creche! fingers crossed.

1st of all, Arsenal fans weren’t even booing Arshavin, they were booing Wenger’s decision to take off Oxlade-Chamberlain and I have to agree with Toby. Arshavin isn’t a left winger, he’s more of a centre forward so why play him left wing. Arshavin could’ve been great but playing him out of position isn’t going to help him, however his lack of effort/ interest is very irritating.

  20. NickTheYank says:

I’ll actually be sad if AA23 doesnt go. I think he’s a great player who needs something new to bring him back to life. He’s not gonna be a regular starter for us anymore given Theo, Gervinho and now Ox. He’s been played out of position for years. He showed us some great skill and then Russia didn’t qualify for WC2010. The end result of that is the Arshavin we’ve seen the past 2 seasons. I sincerely hope he goes back to Russia and rediscovers his form and a passion to play that we haven’t seen for a long time. Make no mistake, his effort and attitude are why you hear all the Arsenal fans calling for him to leave.

In response to the new German unknown we signed… Look at where we are at right now with AA23 and let it be a reminder that a big name/big hype player is never a guarantee!

Well, Arshavin has the highest wages of any Arsenal player, even RVP. He’s been reduced to a squad player, he’s not even a good sub. Why is Wenger still keeping him, given Arsenals wage structure? The board doesn’t want to pay bigger wages for quality players but keep paying Arshavin, I just don’t get it. I am so frustrated at how our club is being run.

I am happy at the signing of Eisfeld. Shows we are still scouting young talent but it is also frustrating yet again, dont get me wrong as he may turn out to be class, I hope, but its frustrating that we do clearly need exerienced players for now. He may be really good in 2-3 years but whats the point if by then we have lost a lot of our top players due to slipping away from the top, then he will just demand to leave, if hes good enough. I completley trust Wengers judgment but it would be nice to see someone experienced, say Podolski for example, his contract is running out so I cant see him costing any more than £20m max, why not get him in and show some proper ambition and bring already expereinced class players. Oh well I cant say im not suprised anyway, lets get 3 points against Bolton tomorrow and close the gap on 4th

@Travis Bickle, I believe in Arsenal more than anything in the world and was distraught when we went 2-0 down to Villa, But after the half quality players like Verm, Kos and of course Van Persie came in and saved the game. True quality players that we need more of to win the Champs League and FA cup. I know in the quality of Wenger and I know how incredible he is as a manager and a leader AND a fine buyer of quality but to challenge in the second half we didn’t really need this player, he is one for the future Wenger says that himself, he wasn’t even going to buy him until the summer. If we bought players like Gotze they would have been straight in the squad and would add depth and quality to a team that so heavily relies on a flying Dutchman and an 18 year old rampant OX. This window is awful and i’m not surprised Wenger did not sign a high calibre player.

Irrespective of whether Arshavin should or should not go …. it’s clear that whatever money we get for him, won’t be re-invested into a player of proven worth. Gazidis has made it clear – we do not buy proven established players, so no Hazard, Gotze, Podolski, . The money hungry owners and board will make sure we never see that money again. If we make a profit on him, that will somehow disappear, after we are told that it can be used to replace him.. If we don’t make a profit, we will all hear about how we made a loss on him, and there is no money. I remember that at the end of the last transfer window, Wenger/Gazidis told us there was £120mil in the bank as “Working Capital” – where we could buy players if we needed to. Seems like either they think we have forgotten about this, or that money has disappeared, and we aren’t a club with wealthy arab or russian to fund us. The board must think we are idiots. I’m utterly sick of this BS. I support Arsenal, but I do not support it’s now owner and board! (Parallel – I support our troops, but not the government that sends them to a war they should not be fighting in). Seems like the downhill spiral really kicked off when we got our american owner. He gives f@#k all whether we are a top team or not, just whether we make him money. (Not that we should be in debt, but we HAVE money in the bank to spend … we just are not allowed to spend it). Our team is turning into a a middle order team, not the glorious Arsenal of years gone by, and its a real, real shame.

Losing Fabregas and Nasri was inevitable, Nasri is a horrible excuse for a man and Cesc is too much of a loyal one. @ LordZeus11

Look I’m not saying this guy is Zidane in disguise. All I’m doing is protecting this guy, who has come to Arsenal under good faith, and hasn’t even played for us, and a lot of people on here are already saying negative things about him.

If people have a problem with the way Arsenal develop their teams, then you are supporting the wrong team. (when I say “you”, I’m referring to people and not you specifically) My point is this: Arsenal has always done, and will always do business in this manner. You cannot tell me you are an Arsenal fan, and be surprised when we sign a 19 year old player whom you have never heard of , and in 2 years time see him playing as a first team member.

And yes, you are right, not every single player Wenger has signed has become top class, but thats not the point. The point is, out of all of the current squad, how many of them have been either no-names or developed within the squad? I would say at least 85-90%. Since supporting Arsenal without fail, every player we sign, I have never heard of. Koscielny? No, Sagna? No, Vermaelen? (heard of his name, didn’t know if he was good) Nasri? (Again heard of him, didn’t know if he was good).

I list them consistently and it becomes easy to name them because they make up so much of this team and previous teams. I would bet that the list of players who become great, outweighs those who do not at Arsenal. Which is more than you can say about any-other team in the EPL. And thats why young players come to Arsenal.

The only reason people are complaining about this is because he is German, he played for Dortmund and he isn’t Goetze. A name everyone has heard.

    @Travis Bickle
Agree with much of what your saying. But how I see it is that people are complaining because they wanted a signing who could help the team now. Most of us are all for bringing in future prospects but we need someone to help us now to the end of the season. Maybe even an upcoming player that has shown great potential and capable of being introduced to our first team.

Hope this Eisfeld does well and is not another Bischoff. I do feel it’s a gamble worth taking on Eisfeld, something I never felt about Bischoff.
