At last – A credible Arsenal centre-back rumour!
There have been some absolutely crazy Arsenal transfer rumours since Arsene Wenger announced he was in the market for a new centre-back, ranging from £20m (no chance!) for Gary Cahill, to bringing in Jonathon Woodgate from Spurs, even though he has played just 45 minutes of a practise game in the last 14 months…
The Blackburn captain Christopher Samba was looking positive, but Steve Kean has revealed that he is now going to sign a new contract at Ewood Park, so that’s another live one crossed off the list..
But today it has been revealed that Arsenal scouts were sent to Scotland last night to watch Hearts beat Rangers 1-0, and could it be that they were having a look at the Rangers defender Mahjid Bougherra?
Wenger was commenting on the Algeria v England game at the World Cup in the summer, and he publicly said that he rated Bougherra highly, and the ex-Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday defender would need no time at all to settle into life in London and the Premiership.
His agent reckons that Rangers are willing to sell if the right offer comes in, and the price is being quoted at just £5m. The price is right for Wenger, Bougherra is big and strong, and Arsene Wenger is a confirmed admirer. Could he be the one????

I like this player, I saw him playing for Algeria against England draw in the World Cup. Rooney suffered in that match as Bougherra had put him in his pocket! I think he suits Wenger’s Arsenal.. good luck boughy

this is not true that he will not take time to sattle, he is 28… i think wenger should go for little big name ..then him… like sakho 8m ,vertoghen 10m.this 2 will be really long term investment for us as they are early 20s. good enough at the moment.wenger mustremember that we are playing barc next month.

In what bountiful and fantastical world would Sakho cost 8mil? He’s young, he’s captain of a big club and is probably being hailed as the next Lillian Thuram. In fact if Oxlade-Chamberlain is worth 10 bar then Sakho is easily worth about 25! If he doesn’t go to City then it’ll be Real Madrid or Italy somewhere.

From what I heard, they were there to watch Alan McGregor!
But I was thinking to myself, how peculiar of Arsene to want a goalkeeper when he has Fabianski and Scezeny doing well.
Now it makes sense, he wants Bougherra. But how fast will he fit in to the English game, I don’t know. Squilliaci is around the same age, and he is struggling. Hopefully, Bougherra is better

The guy is good. I’ve seen him played many times. At the world cup in South Africa, he was outstanding.
He does not need time to settle in. He has played for Charlton before and he wont hamper the development of Djorou, Laurent and Miqel. He will bring in more stability to our defence. The guy is a no nonsense defender.

5 Million? That’s excellent. BUT … because it’s so close to the transfer window closure, they will be able to hike up the price a little bit because they know Arsene is desperate and won’t have the time to search for another defender. It’s the same thing he did with the sale of Cole3 and he got burnt there for leaving things too late – he had to settle for a player swap and pay Gallas what Cole3 was asking for anyway. That was a mess.
Arsene does not like buying players. We know that, but in recent seasons, because it is being questioned more due to the lack of winning anything, he makes out he’s TRIED to buy players – but the truth seems to be he had no genuine intention of buying them because the deals are left too late in the transfer window to be finalised. If you do your research, you’ll see this trend of Arsene’s … and here again, I see the trend ONE week before the closure of the window.
I will believe it when I see it. BTW, his age is fine, look at Sol Campbell at that age. Vidic at OT is a year older, who would say no to him?

You must understand that a player Mahjid Bougherra is the best option for Arsenal , my reason is that i have watched him play and he is really a good defender that will improve more with us and for Samba or Cahill will be a kind of wrong move because do you expect them to sit on the bench for Verminator Djorou, or Laurent, who we need at the moment is someone who will be a cover up for Verminator Djorou, or Laurent cause they are really good defenders. at least we should be happy that wenger wouldnt be buying Campbell or woodgate.

good something like that looks more likely than cahill or samba with the transfer window about 2 shut. I just hope wenger buys some CB cause we need one currently with verm and squil out and djorou and kosc. too risky to play them continuously and hes better than any one else who has the same price.SO BUY HIM PLZ A.W.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@gooner92….I appreciate that there are decent players coming out of Scotland but not for Arsenals level….Gordon is class but hes a keeper, but Hutton wudnt get near our first 11, mcgregor bougerra Hooper brown izegearie kayal stokes all decent for Fulhamn,Wigan, bolton n co but not Arsenal /Chelsea /Man utd etc…. im not slating Scotland but thats a fact…..I do admit that Adam is VERY good player and good luck to him at Liverpool if he goes but he wudnt scratch the surface in the top 4, i hope u realise though that if Old frim were in premiership they wud get relegated straight away…….(now here comes a debate lol)…..

BUT I really don’t think we’re going to get another central defender (at least a quality central defender). We CAN NOT have 4 (vermaelen, djourou, koscielny, boughera) high quality center backs in the squad….it’s not sustainable!!!! – they will all want to be the first choice CBs – and deservedly so – and eventually one or more of them will become dissatisfied with just being “depth” and leave.

I think its a decent idea…it was always going to be a quiet signing! All the games i have seen him play he has been very handy! Big and strong and the scottish game is similar…big hard tackling bargy style…obviously a large class difference…but he is better than the squid and we only need a back up! cahill would be good but it ain’t gonna happen and frankly we don’t really need him when TV is back we have 3 amazing defenders…just need a solid back up to them such as Bouhgherra

Wenger signs great players that are younger than 27 years, as far as my statistics goes everything over 28 years have had repercussions to us. With the exception of Lehman, and counting arshavin as one of the first category.
Every 28-32 year old we get rumours from are highly probable to be the same case as silvestre, so I don’t know why so many fans are keen to get one defender of that ages, when he is completely massed out, like squillaci is demonstrating to be. They are old they learned how to play years ago and they cannot change their style because they are too much attached to their experience that a slight change will make them nuts, like squillaci and silvestre.
We do need an experienced defender, but not a massed out one, one that can develop and suit his style to ours. For that matter i still hope on the arrival of Cahill. We require Experience in the sense that the player knows how to control his nerves and also knows and recognizes the different phases and characteristics of a season and matches, something that 18 years old need time to understand.

omg he is terrible I’m from scotland and support aberdeen and arsenal of course so I’ve seen him play many times and he strugles agaisnt spl strikers who are very poor , if u watched the last old firm game you wwould of seen him get tooken to the cleaners by samaras an ex epl player who scored 8 in 56 games as samaras took the ball into the box and he just stuck out a foot no need and conceded a penalty every1 of our cb are better waste of money we will win the league with him as cb FACT if he is getting him for 5mil wenger may aswell sign cahill for an extra 10mil , trust me he is awful

At the end of the day it’s down to the lads on the pitch, and as of now I believe we do have the quality to win the premiership, we just need some cover for the next 6 weeks or so whilst we wait for Vermy to get back fit and ready to fight! We are in real need of cover back there. Bougherra is decent but the scottish league is really bad. There has been good players that came out of their in the past but the league has went down hill. I am also a Gers fan as well as an Arsenal one and I do think that Bougherra has done well in the champions league and also he had a good world cup. I believe at 5 million he would be great cover and probably is better than Koscielny and Squallici. We need cover and surely even Wenger knows this..

Please don’t rate a player just because you haven’t heard of him or there is no 20-30 million tag on the player.
Manu bought Vidic for 5-7 mil 4 years back and he was unknown. Look at him today.
All we need is a backup and he fits the bill.
He was man-of-match at Old Trafford against Manu in the Champions League which is no mean feat.
I am sure everybody remembers his performance against England in the World Cup
Also the team in which a player plays makes a huge difference. You never know if he could make it big here.
Also 28 is not too much for a CB
Best thing about him is he can play Holding Midfield which gives us a backup for Song as well.
What more do you want from a backup player?
