Barnet v Arsenal – “The most important thing is no injuries”
Arsenal begin their pre-season campaign away at Barnet tomorrow in their regular July meeting at Underhill, and the Barnet coach Mark Stimson believes that it could be a close game, but the most important thing is that neither side sustain any injuries ahead of the new season.
“The main thing is no injuries, that is the biggest thing in pre-season and I’m sure it is the same for Arsenal,” said Stimson.
“It is a friendly and, although all games are competitive, my boys will certainly be told not to go out in any way, shape or form and try and put a player out for any period of time. We really do appreciate clubs like Arsenal coming to us and playing us in pre-season friendlies and we don’t want to build a bad relationship with a badly-timed tackle or something like that.
“We will try and compete with Arsenal on the day but that is going to be a massive ask.”
Barnet have managed draws against their illustrious opponents in two of the last four meetings, and Stimson is hopeful that his team can give Arsenal a run for their money.
“The clubs are at different stages of pre-season, the Arsenal players will have come back after us and we’ll be at certain levels but hopefully it will be an enjoyable game for everybody involved. We’ve had a game already but I wouldn’t have thought that gives us an advantage! If Arsenal’s players get the ball popping around it will be very difficult for our guys.”
Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie are booth still on holiday after their exertions in South Africa, but Wenger has most of his first players back in training already, and new signings Laurent Koscielny and Marouane Chamakh are expected to make their debuts at some point in the match.
Almunia, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Wilshere, Denilson, Rosicky, Walcott and Arshavin are also expected to be play at least some of the match, but there will also be some youngsters on show.
