Barton admits he went down easy
The Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton managed to get the Arsenal new-boy Gervinho sent off after going to ground like he’d been hit by a train, but thinks that the Frenchman should have got sent off for diving anyway.
He said on his Twitter page last night: “I went down easy, no doubt. Still, you can’t raise your hands… What do I have to gain by standing and trading with him? NOWT.
“Standing and defending myself has only got me in trouble before. What do you want me to do, hit him back? Or hope the ref keeps him on the pitch?
“If he doesn’t dive then the incident doesn’t happen. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten involved, but diving and trying to win a penalty is s***. Needs stamping out.
“I train all summer to have him cheat us out of a hard-earned point? It’s not on. Diving should be a three-game ban. Respect the game.
“If there’s contact, go down – but don’t blatantly try to con the ref. Refs have it hard enough.”
The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew backed up Barton when he said: “Gervinho dived, there is no doubt about that,” Pardew said. “Joey’s reaction was to chastise him and then there was a tussle. But then he slapped him and you can’t do that.
“Earlier I think Joey was calm, but Song did stamp on him and that was disappointing. I had Song as a player at Charlton and that was out of character for him.
“Joey was incensed. When a fellow professional dives, that gets your back up. Joey is an opinionated guy. He has opinions and expressed them.”
Perhaps players should get banned for diving, and perhaps they should get banned for feigning injury as well….

Don’t agree that Barton should have been redcarded in yesterday’s game.
The convicted thug should have been banned from football years ago. If the authorities had had the courage to do this, he wouldn’t have been on the pitch yesterday. I hope Newcastle throw him out and no other team will sign him.

welcome to the prem gerv! he’l learn!! as for joey we should of braught him, if nothing else wed only play against 10 men every week as joey always gets someone sent off! fisrt game of the season and i was impressed, ok we need to be more clinical but i thought we looked rock solid especially at the back. newcastle were never gna trouble us even though we went down to 10 men. good away point and clean sheet in a fixture that gave us nightmares last year.

The thing that bothers me is that 2 newcastle players clearly dived for important set pieces in the 4-4 that led to goals. One was a dive in the box (I think by Best, might be wrong) when jumping for a header with rosicky (of all people), which got them a penalty; the other was a dive by BARTON, again jumping for a header with rosicky, which got them the freekick from which they scored the equaliser. How these 6ft plus players could be knocked to the ground by rosicky is questionable in the extreme, and so they clearly got these goals from diving.
Then gervinho goes down easily in a challenge where he was touched, so although I would admit it was a dive of sorts, it was arguably still a penalty, and gervinho was arguably trying to make the contact visible to the referee, rightly or wrongly. And then barton himself dives to the ground.
I mean this is hypocrisy in the extreme. And in each of the incidents mentioned, Newcastle get the rub of the green from the ref.
I know song got lucky with the stamp, I of course accept that gervinho deserved his red, but the comments you hear from people, particularly barton are infuriating. Everything (except the song stamp) goes their way, and still you have to listen to this crap.

First point – yes Gervinho obviously doesn’t have an understanding of English football. Want evidence – lets look at yesterdays game – Song stamped on Barton. What did Barton do? He went to the ref. Did he take the provocation and get sent off?
THIS IS WENGERS FAULT – GOING YEARS WITHIUT A LEADER ON THE PITCH IS WENGERS FAULT.
His players are sitting ducks for the likes of the Bartons of this world. I very much doubt a second rate player like Barton would ever try his luck against an Arsenal player in the team under the stewardship if Patrick or Tony.
As usual its the same old AKB’s talking the same old……..
And please for calling me a 9 year old. When I was 9 years old Arsenal never used to win trophies. But the fans were still proud. Nowadays the fans are as soft as the teamn looking to blame everyone but themselves.

Barton did not stamp Song back because while he may be many things, he has half a football brain and knew that Song stamped him when the ref had his back to him and he he reacted that the ref would probably be looking at him by this time so Song would get away with it and Barton would go off.

G. Neville, another leader, should have been sent off twice last season for persistent bookable offences. There were a couple of occasions where time stood still because EVERYONE knew that he should have been shown red, and were waiting for the ref, who wouldn’t comply.

gervinho is NOT french he is Ivorian and law states you cannot raise hands to face so had to go but he was unjustly manhandled by barton. It wasn’t a dive as contact was made and replays proved it so people need to get facts right b4 pointing blame

Come on Wenger, SIGN UP Barton. What he did with Gervinho is exactly what Tony Adams did with team-mate Nelson Vivas. He chastised him on the pitch. He picked Vivas up by the scruff and said,”Get up, get up, we don’t play like that at Arsenal.”
Gervinho will learn from this, he’ll dive less and he won’t get confrontational with players. Doesn’t anyone remember Nasri getting almost sent off with Barton too on his debut season.

Barton has no excuse to give. He did that twice in that game. First againt song, which he retaliated, but the ref didnt see that. Then secondly against Gervinho and he retaliated but unfortunately ref saw that and gave him red card. Agree that Gervinho dived, but Barton was up for a fight so Gervinho has to stand up and be a man. Both should have been sent off. Barton has a record of arrogance on and off the pitch. The comparison is made because they are the team that won the league last season. It is made because of the unfair treatment we receive from the media and referees relative to our main rivals for the title.
I don’t understand why you find it worrying? You think we should constantly be rising above the referees, the positive treatment Utd get and the negative treatment we get? It’s no longer possible to do that. The PL is too strong now, and its not possible to rise above all this even if you are the best side in the league.
I don’t understand the points you make at all. We never used to have particularly mature players in the way they responded to injustices etc, they used to fight, and we all saw it as a good thing. Remember how Keown and others surrounded van nistelroy after he cheated us and then missed his pen? We lost Lauren, Martin Keown, Patrick Vieira and Ray Parlour for several matches after that game all because he wanted to make a point – not very “mature” was it? I loved it nonetheless, but you can’t apply different standards to him just because he played in a better side.
Now they’re supposed to act differently because in hindsight we didn’t win a few games?

but they had a lot of help from the ref in doing that. Gerv’s appeal was much more a penalty than at least one of those penalties, and barton dived for the freekick that led to the equaliser.

My point is, when Rooney elbows someone (etc etc), is it fergie’s fault? Why are you applying different standards for these similar events?

Video replays to assist the officials would stop 90% of this crap. The referee saw nothing of what Barton did or said to Gervihno as he hauled him up. It would have taken about two minutes to review by the fourth official and the result would have been a red for Barton for raising his hands in a threatening manner against Gervinho. Gervinho for slapping Barton and a warning to Taylor for being a prize pratt. Song would of course been sent off as well earlier. What is it with Barton and the African players..he must be saying something else to them. For song to almost swap shirts with Barton at the end shows hoe thick Song is. We have a great deal to learn. Replays would eradicate diving,stamping and basic cheating the referee..it is about time as the game is going down the pan.

A wind up merchant who has been successful at winding up Arsenal players is on the pitch and Wengers team reacts as it did.
Whose fault is it then? Becasue I would like to know. There is no leader or true captain on the pitch so Wenger must prepare his players before they leave the dressing room.

Blame the refs, because they are screwing us over and over again, and blame the individuals for poor decisions at the time, but we didn’t collapse yesterday after what happened, we showed much better leadership individually and wenger made good substitutions to ensure we stayed solid.

I agree that we make the same mistakes time and again. The manager and coaching staff have to take responsibility for this. Barton is a con artist…warn the players..drill them to have no response to him..grow up ffs. What was Song doing stamping on Barton when he already had a yellow?

Sorry to let you know but in this mornings Metro Wenger did say that Gervinho over reacted.
It just seems a bit strange that a certain section of the Arsenal faithful have now decided that no one at Arsenal is any longer responsible even though Wenger is saying otherwise.
