Belgian star issues come-and-get-me plea to Arsenal
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has announced that he will be “active” in the transfer market, and he is specifically looking for mature and experienced players.
Surely one of his targets must be a strong defensive midfielder to cover for Alex Song, and to help out the defence at set-pieces.
Well the Belgian star Axel Witsel may only be 22 years-old, but he has been playing first team football at Standard Liege for five years, and has played 18 games for his country. He is 6ft tall, strong and is looking for a move to the Premier League, preferably with Arsenal, according to his father Thierry.
He said: “I personally hope that this was his last season with Standard as he needs to grow and to do it he needs to leave the country.”
“He doesn’t have a specific target but he has a dream and it’s called Arsenal, but this doesn’t mean that he’s not open to other clubs.”
Witsel has won the Belgian League twice with Standard as well as the Belgian Cup this season. He was named Young-Player-of-the-Year two seasons ago and is obcviously a winner.
It has also been rumoured that Liverpool are considering an offer in the region of £9m, which seems a great price for such a talent.
Would Witsel be a good fit at Arsenal?

@thomas vermealen id loved to see hazard as well but if fabregas and nasri dont leave there will be no place in the starting eleven im afraid ,and fellaini extenended his contract so he wont be cheap i guess,,plus his hair cost around a million pound extra:P
@spenza denilson is leaving so i think it would be great to sign this guy and see how far he gets belgium has some very good players

Belgium has a pretty strong national side; Vermaelen, Hazard, Vertonghen, Witsel, Lukaku. yikes!!
I really really hope Vertonghen is picked up by Arsenal, he would be nothing short of an asset in defence or as a defensive midfield option!!

If we sign only signed three of Vertonghen, Eden Hazard, Axel Witsel or Romelu Lukaku I would be very happy. Also if it is true that Clichy is leaving I would want Gregory van der Wiel to play on the left as he is two footed. He is such a good fullback and would be one of the worlds best under Arsene. In a few more years he would move back to right back to replace the ageing Sagna and Eboue. This would open up the left for a more mature Gibbs and Botelho who returns to Arsenal soon.

Dunno about this guy. Can’t get the image of him absolutely destroying Wasilevski’s leg a couple of years ago out of my head.
Actually, Id’ love to see two different Belgians added to our side: Hazard to show Theo how you actually dribble past opponents and Vertonghen to slot in next to national side defensive partner Vermaelen.

Phil23 dont piss about van der weil is a great right back, play him there and make sagna fight it out with him, till jenkinson is ready to be understudy. Sell Eboue, Squillaci, Hoyte and Boateng to help buy him. Move TV5 to left back and buy Vertonghen to play alongside Samba. Now that is a 1st choice defence. If Sagna cannot deal with that sell him and buy Jagielka. Botelho and Gibbs to fight it out for Nasri understudy on the left wing in place of Arshavin, unless of course we can buy Hazard.

i have watched witsel for a while but to be honest he kinda went off my radar for a while, he was fab in the standard team that performed well in the uefa cup a few years ago. he certainly is talented and has the discipline to master the DM position.
if anyone wants to question his quality remember this is the player who Alex Ferguson sent a get well letter to when he had a serious injury…..methinks if he is good enough for ferguson to drool over then why not us?
