Bob Wilson – Wenger hated buying English players
The Arsenal legend Bob Wilson has been speaking about Arsene Wenger’s policy of buying foreigners over Englishman, and says that the Frenchman even said that Arsenal would go bust if they bought English players!
A new report today shows that Wenger has bought a total of 83 players since arriving at Arsenal 14 years ago, and only 7 of them were English, and Wilson admitted that Wenger was definitely biased against them.
Wilson, who was goalkeeping coach under Wenger, said: “When I was working with Arsene, he said English players were not good enough technically and it would take a decade for things to improve.
“Now, there are seven or eight extremely good English players on the fringes of the team.
“Managers such as Martin O’Neill and Harry Redknapp have signed a lot of English players but they have over-paid for most of them. You only have to look at the current figures being quoted for James Milner at Aston Villa.
“Arsene always told the club’s board he could make the club go bust within two minutes if they wanted to sign lots of English players. But now he’s brought them through his way and we are seeing the results of this policy.
“Players like Jack Wilshere are great talents. I now hope he gets the opportunity this season to prove himself.”
Wenger has certainly made up for ignoring English players on the transfer market by bringing some brilliant English youngsters through the Academy. He is now providing the backbone of the England teams in the future.
But talking about English players, why on earth did Wenger buy Francis Jeffers!

Why pay over the odds (see=60 mill) to buy Lampard or Gerrard when he got Fabregas for free and he’s now a World Cup winner. The same can be said for Van Persie over Rooney, Clichy over Cole, Sagna over Johnson. The list goes on and on.

I think the headline is misleading. The man hates OVERSPENDING, not English players. Hasn’t he been proved right by the British teams’ performances over time? The UK hype over their players is simply too much & they get so overpriced. Imagine Rio F for £30m!
Sounds good to me. The downside is that continental players arrive, and get beaten up during the rough gameplay in the Premier League. It’s got to be tough for a guy like Denilson or Nasri — coming from purer footballing countries — to have to play against goons like Darren Fletcher and philosophies like that of Sam Alardyce.
i can understand wengers policy towards english players,i can’t find any english player that we can call world class?
rooney good but not world class,like messi inesta or ozil,to name just a few.and that goes for others like gerrard lampbard terry.
just look at englands world cup this summer,it was a disgrace only beaten to be fair by france.
the main trouble is we do over pay for english players,not just in transfer money but in wages too.
the only player who for me tried to give a 100% and did,was cashly cole,and he’s proberly our nearest player to being world class.
i think the trouble is(and its only my opinion)that english lads like to go out with thier mates get drunk play the big i am,and forget they need to continue to improve in football and give 100% commitment on and off the field,where as, young players comming from abroad,
don’t know any one in this country,so they knuckle down in training often staying behind to do extra training improving thier skills, and thats why we don’t see world class players from england.

we’ve all doubted wenger at some time or other…but its in the fullness of time that you realise how astute he is….genius is an over-used word nowadays…but comparitively against some of the meat-head managers…he certainly is. There was never any cultural bias against english players…just the financial consideration of expecting to pay double-money just because he was english.
you know what Wenger is just great, but wenger can you give us the goalie we want, or give manone the No. 1 role. front line fine Nasri what a fantastic player, rambo will be back. this one is for arsenal whether Man u likes it or yes. we hav give time to these other teams to test the sucess of PL now we want to get what belongs to us.
Villa want 30 million for Milner and Bolton want something like 25 million for Garry Cahill, enough said.
wenmger is a racist.. i tell you why. laurent koscienly he brought for £10 million BUT gary cahill was also offered for £10 million and he brought the french one instead of the english one.. its nothing to do with money, wenger is a clown and racist.
arsenal only won trophies when we had english players.

i agree with whoever above thinks arsenal needs a core of english players.bcoz english player like lampard rooney gerrard are player who can 1st favorable descison from refrees.most succesful team have a core of players from a national team. barsa has the core of spanish national team, inter many players from argentina,porto or whoever won the portguese league has many portuguese players.
arsenal has a too many nationalities in its squad.it helps when you are visiting foreign countries but nothing more.
since arsenal is a english club it needs a bunch of english players playing regularly. give chances to gibbs,lansbury,JET,fripong,wilshere,bartley. they will show AW how to win the premiere.

jOHN, THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE! Bolton never will accept 10m for Cahill, PLUS His wages will never be 25k a week, THAT’S Laurent Koscielny’s wages Cahill would want close to 50k a week plus Bolton would want 15m minimum for an ok defender. I agree that Wenger’s scouts should work more in the lower English and Welsh leagues, but the technical ability is often lacking to complement how Arsenal wants to play. I hope Wilshere does not get big headed, but no way will Wilshere not ask for a big pay day when he gets the shine he wants, and rightly so. We lost Ashley Cole because he taught he was bigger than the Club. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas crashed a McLaren Benz, how much is he getting???? Walcott, God bless him, is on 60k aweek! I’m sure Pedro of Barca is not on 60k a week and he is miles better than Walcott. I want Arsenal to have a core English players, but the English needs to come down notches to reality about their abilities, it is affecting their International ambitions.
Being English is not a GOD given right to demand high wages and transfare fees for being talentess and party orianted ppls ( celebrity life style) than hardworking foriegners. It’s the culture Cashley was a childhood Gooner but sold out to our rivals. Rooney an Evertonian left his club which he supported, which nutured him in disgusting circumstances. How much did that set United back 30 mill. We got Toure for less than Rooney’s weekly wage.

why does he continue to work with so many English/British Staff in his backroom team, wouldnt he ave got rid of em all and got in foreign coaches/physio’s then ? He’s got a degree in economics and wont waste loads on Over hyped english players, Simples!
