Bruce Rioch – “Arsene Has Done A Brilliant Job For The Club”
Former Arsenal boss Bruce Rioch knows all about pressure having experienced plenty during his one year reign at Highbury. He may not be remembered for his results on the pitch, but he should always be remembered for bringing Dennis Bergkamp to the club.
Rioch has urged Wenger to look back over his time at Arsenal if he wants to be successful again. He said, “Maybe he should look again at his most successful side. It had all the qualities that winning teams need. In players like Jens Lehmann in goal, Patrick Vieira and Sol Campbell – among others – Arsenal were tough, difficult to beat, tall, physical with character. Going forward and scoring goals, all the skill and talent was there too with Robert Pires, Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. That team could never be intimidated.”
There is certainly skill and talent in the current squad, do we have the mentality of being difficult to beat. I think not right now. We could certainly do with a Patrick Vieira in the middle of the park at the moment, but we don’t have one so we will make do with what we have.
Rioch went on to say, “I feel Arsene is under a lot of pressure because in the last six years he has fallen short of the exceptionally high standards he set. I don’t know him well but we have met. He’s very pleasant, a nice person who has helped many players further their careers. Now he simply has to win games of football. It’s lovely when you can win with a bit of style, but the Premier League is extremely competitive and Arsenal need to be competitive. They have been going into certain situations, going to certain grounds where you don’t fancy them. That never used to be the case.”
Rioch finished off by saying, “Arsene has done a brilliant job for the club. If he left, virtually all of Europe’s top clubs would be interested.”
Yes how true I’m sure they would. The saying ‘In Arsene We Trust’ is now more important than ever whether you like it or not. Now is the time for unity and support and if Arsene Wenger gets that our great club will once again be back at the top of the tree.
