Can Arsenal really win a trophy with Almunia and Fabianski?

Posted on August 31, 2010 by admin

We have had confirmation from all sides that Arsene Wenger has been trying to secure a new goalkeeper this summer. Peter Hill-Wood announced right at the beginning of the summer break that Arsenal had had an offer for Mark Schwarzer turned down, and since then the Gunners have been linked with every available goalkeeper from here to Siberia.

It was admitted by Cagliari that Arsenal had made a bid for Federico Marchetti, so much so that he asked them for a transfer and prepared to leave, but the deal fell through because the two sides couldn’t agree on a valuation.

In the last few weeks, Mark Schwarzer has spoken out about how much he wanted to join Arsenal, but the lack of an increased bid from the Gunners meant that it was always going to be a game of poker until the last day. Wenger even had Mark Hughes searching high and wide to find a replacement, even though he had little time to secure someone as capable and experienced as the big Australian.

But the gods conspired against us, and the transfer window has closed. So we now know that it will yet again be Manuel Almunia as this season’s Number One, with Fabianski waiting in the wings to do a few fumbles if Almunia gets injured.

But can Almunia even play to the best of his ability, even though he is aware that Wenger has tried so hard (?) to find someone to take his place? Can he play with confidence knowing that the manager (as well as the fans) don’t think he is good enough to be on the pitch? Will rival managers like Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes be right now rubbing their hands with glee working out how to put extra pressure on Almunia when they face Arsenal?

OR…..Will both Almunia and Fabianski both suddenly improve and make the Emirates into a fortress again….?

  1. Robert says:

    Yes they most certainly can.

If Almunia stays fit and gets his top form back, he is a decent keeper, certainly good enough to not make stupid errors. The problem is many non-loyal arsenal supporters will use them as scapegoats – almunia may mess up in a match or two throughout the whole season, but will that really effect their winning chances? Nope.

POSSIBLY having Almunia would mean not having a great CL chance but Arsenal shouldn’t really be gunning for that, maybe a few seasons on when the youth have really matured from an extremely good side to an unstoppable one.

When you start putting Fabianski into the mix…Arsenal are screwed. :L

I really am disapointed, was sure we were going 2 get a decent keeper, dont get me wrong almunia and fabianski are good keepers but not great and will cost us between 9 and 14 points a season, we might do ok in one of the domestics cups but the league is a no no now guarenteed

So, apparently Manuel Almunia’s 07/08 and 08/09 performances has suddenly disappeared! He was amazing in these seasons!

Either way, I know that Almunia will want to prove himself this season! I don’t doubt at all that he’ll show all the fans how good of a keeper he is, even though as we all know, he cannot rely on the defense for support.

Honestly I don’t know what you all really expect him to do with that defense! Schwarzer nor Given would make much of a difference with the defense looking like, well… THAT! I say get the defense strengthened, which Arsene Wenger is still working on, and we’ll see why Manuel Almunia was the one chosen to replace Jens Lehmann.

    I BELIEVE IN ALMUNIA!

  6. Baz says:

Wenger had long enough to buy a keeper, He didn’t, so if we don’t do well or the keepers make mistakes, its not their faults its wengers. So when this happens its wengers head you should be calling for and not the keepers.

  7. Matt Clarke says:

I disagree with the mainstrem view that these ‘keepers are crap.

I look at last season’s defence and place a lot of the blame on the likes of Silvestre and Watshisname (French guy, nows play for some second-rate team in white, anyway…) and have always thought Almunia’s poor form to be related to lack of confidence in these players.

So…with a new defence in place (yeah Koscielny still has a few things to learn about the English game, but he WILL learn quickly) I belive that we can win a (real) trophy (or two) this season.

(I have just read the last post (TheRobin) and am glad to see someone else shares this view).

Look – I’m sure Wenger knows what he’s doing more than any other person does, so just let him get on with his job. Almunia will not be depressed etc because of the rumours, I’m sure Wenger put faith in him and he’ll repay it stronger than ever.

I imagine the talk went like this: ‘Manuel, d00d, I could get that crazy Australian down the street and you’ll have no job, but I won’t as I know that you definitely probably possibly will not mess up.”

U lot really do forgive and forget quite easilly, what about when almunia threw nani’s cross into his own net, the weak wrists he had when phillips scored for birmingham just to mention a few, i am not being negative it’s just how i see things and i am myself a keeper and make plenty of misstakes but i dont get 20-30 thousand a week, all i’m saying is we should of looked at someone else, freshen it up a bit

what we need is a great no.2 keeper to keep pressure on Almunia…cause as of now Flappy is worse than he is and is nit really brining out the best in Almunia…but knowing now that the boss was searching for someone to replace one of them i think Almunia will come good and i will not be surprise to hear us singing Ali,Ali (not dreaming , am I?)

The answer for Almunia this season is to be a “stay at home ” goalie as much as possible. It’s when he comes out to meet crosses, flaps and misses that the trouble arises. In turn, our back four must improve. In the end, there is always the January window to review the situation.

I think now its all over, its time for us all to get behind Almunia. Don’t get me wrong i was there in slating him and praying, hoping for a replacement to bring us a better end product, but unfortunately its not be. We should all drop it till January hope for the best and try to fill Almunia with the confidence he needs Hoping he doesn’t pull a sickie leaving us with Fabianski.

Still though what was AW thinking £30 million available to spend and apparently a keeper aint worth 15 million to save us 10-15 points which would have won us the league last year. Anyway enough said. Heads up, bring on Bolton.

i am quite glad we didnt get a new goal keeper…alumnia makes mistakes…who dosent?but he is above average in my books…maybe we sud blame the goal keeping coaches…more…they should be the ones training them on corner kicks and all that innit….so if he makes a mistake..its their shame as well

Every keeper in football will make mistakes this season. I request all gooners to please not react badly at the first mistake Almunia makes. Sure he is not the best, and he never claimed to be the best. However, he is good enough in front of a good defence. Prime example is Ngog’s goal at Liverpool. Did anyone noticed the catalogue of errors from Arshvin, younge Wilshire and Risicky near the penalty area. How can anyone blame Almunia only. Lets support him now and see where this takes us.

  17. Mr Sad says:

Yes i remember 07/08 and 08/09 another 2 seasons without trophies, Almunia has always made mistakes, hes a fairly good shot stopper but is absofuckinglutely useless at corners and set pieces. We needed a solid keeper who knows when to come for a ball and when to stay on his line. he dropped us a good 9 points last year and this put us out of the title race. Wenger also knows this which is why he was pretending to look for a replacement. There was never any question of him upseting the board by spending any money. He couldnt give a shit about trophies, as long as he gets top 4 than Kroenke and Usmanov take the money and give him 10%. Completely gutted after today, gutted

It’s really a shame we couldn’t get a quality goalkeeper when we had ample time but I am willing to support Almunia and hope that he can step up. If he can’t, well that will be the end of the road really. I can’t imagine Fabianski in goal though. When I think of him, I can’t help but picture that comedy with campbell and him, where he handed the opponent the ball and they scored. Hahahaha. That was comical!

AW should stop his excuses for the goalkeepers and face reality though. Stop blaming “Rugby tactics” or saying that “Fabianski had a good game” when he didn’t have anything to do at all.

Time will tell how things turn out.

Cannot believe Arsenal’s inability to sign a world-class GK when they had ALL summer…14 players out (inc loans/transfers) and 3 players in for circa £12m also making a massive saving on the wage bill…selling club…club with lack of ambition…club with no money…or just Wenger being tight??? We could still compete up to a point in transfers as we get loads of income from various sources inc £3m per match day and we could get a decent keeper for up to £15m which we could easily afford but just didn’t want to. It’s like let’s get rid of this Emirates debt asap rather than reduce the debt at a sensible level so we are still competing. Wenger/Arsenal have 1 year now to prove me wrong but sadly i think we will just come up short AGAIN, no trophies and maybe 3rd/4th league finish at best…

Right the window is shut so lets get surporting the lads. Just remember after 31 games we were only 3 points behind chelsea. Also United and Chelsea beat us twice so if can improve on those results and of course not as many goalkeeping errors and hopefully we can get the league. At home to bolton lets give Almunia the biggest cheer we can and let him know he is the fans number 1. No sense complaining there is nothing we can do now. I wanted a world class keeper as much as any1 but wev got Almunia and thats it. Come on Arsene prove the doubters wrong and lets get the trophies in!!

That should have not happened if he really meant a keeper business; lets do one thing; lets support our team coz we shall always remain gunners with or without AW and if we win a trophy it wont be AW but God and our players. l hope he never makes a statement like ‘We didnt need a keeper’ coz that will expose his blunt excuses. Go Almunia, personally, i think we’ll do fine with Almunia. But for those who blame Wenger for it, come on, he tried his best to get a keeper, the fact that noone in europe made any major signings with keepers prove the fact that on that position, noone is moving. And if your gonna say Wenger could have made a bigger bid for Schwarzer, he didnt need to. Fulham were already looking for a replacement for him, so its obvious that WEnger did hit the mark already with the 2m bid. Its just the matter of no movement in the transfer market for goal keepers.

At us with the keepers we have, but we can’t spend more that 2m on a position that has costs us so much? This has been going on for so long now. All the top managers even the girl next door knew Arsenal needs a keeper and even though Wenger promised spending in the transfer market this summer all we have spent is about 14 m while losing 4 players. As a fan I feel sick, I’m sick of taking stick from my Man U , Chelsea and even spurs fans who all know as long as Wenger thinks he own Arsenal, and the Board of Directors would love nothing more than for him to keep making excuses for all the foul ups his keepers makes Arsenal will always under achieve. go on Arsene you own Arsenal, you !!!!!!!!!!

I think its unbelievable that we didn’t buy a keeper, their are more keepers than poxy mark schwarzer, we will win nothing again, why carnt wenger just accept we need reinforcements at the club. Every top team has a top class keeper that’s why they win trophies and we don’t simple as that. We have the worst keeper in the league let alone the top four. I give up wenger is a let down in the transfer market, disgusting we pay so much money for season tickets to watch our team win trophies but I’m afraid that won’t be happening any time soon. We have a choice of keepers to buy just to solve this once n for all… Akinfeev, buffon, given, marchetti need I go on.. N even tottenham have a snip at 8 million for van der vaart to quality signing tould have slotted straight into the arsenal team, we missed the boat yet again, is the club really skint? Or is wenger just the tightest ignorant manager in football? Potless once again we have never replaced super jens lehmann.

Almunia has had all the time he could of wanted. I’ve never thought he was any good. And those who say he was good a few seasons ago shall i remind them of the champions league final? the two goals they scored a top calss keeper would of saved. He’s already cost us two points this season againts liverpool with N’gogs goal.

And fabianski. Ended all our title challenge when he dropped that corner on a wigan players head. And in the past he cost us the FA cup against chelsea with the two goals he conceded while at the other end, Cech, A real world class keeper kept out all shots we could throw at him.

Surely the mistakes are obvious and with so many over such a long period of time Wenger has to of realised that without a world class keeper your team won’t win anything.

Us having not got a keeper will mean that unless vermealen and kosielny can stop every cross and weak shot, we once again won’t win anything…

I’d just like to see Sczcesney (?) given a few games because he looked brilliant at brentford last season.

  37. Common Sensei says:

    @ moaners

Well what the hell did you think was going to happen you big daft mugs!? Haha I mean not only did the usual intelligent football minded people pretty much agree at the end of the season AND during the transfer window that AW probably wouldn’t get a new keeper unless one came along ultra cheap plus better than what we have, but looking back I can see the entire ‘interest in other keepers’ being a tactic. Used by Wenger to bring the best out of Almunia for the first 3 games, setting him up for a good season by improving his confidence in himself and the defence infront of him.

Schwarzer is standard, about the same ability as Almunia but older, less mobile and more prone to injury. No better than Almunia and physically declining quicker.

Given has no distribution tactics, and whilst he is a good shot-stopper is no better at collecting crosses than what we already have. His communication with the back 4 is also nowhere near as good as Almunia’s, and since all he seems to want t odo is throw out to his-left back or just punt the ball as far upfield as possible – he would not only wreck our passing game but take opportunities for our younger keepers. Worse than what we have.

Lloris looks good at times, but he is very small and poor on corners and free kicks. He seems to find it hard to concentrate on the big matches also – we need a keeper who can dominate his area. Not one that is small and indecisive on set pieces. Was very poor in this regard in both legs against Munich (Who dumped Lyon out of the CL) and alsso gave up several points against inferior teams in Ligue 1 so he isn’t a good option either.

Almunia is all-round better than all of the above keepers, proven by the stats from his last 60 combined games compared to the other keepers. He is not over-expensive and is loyal to the club, his attitude is top notch and now we have got rid of Gallas and Silvestre (two players he has clashed with in past seasons) and our back4 has 2 new additions; his confidence seems to be climbing again! He is not the reason we have not won a trophy in 6 years at all, people who say this are clueless about football – that is like saying without Cesc we would never win a game …. gross ignorance!

Wenger is an excellent manager for Arsenal, and his coaching staff are excellent also so let’s not try to point the finger at them. Football is a team sport, so the REAL reason we have not won anything in 6 years is because the ENTIRE TEAM underperformed at some point.

We had players progressing who were never going to stay loyal to Arsenal and who had issues with other players; Adebayor, Toure, Hleb, Lehmann – this can’t have aided the progress of our younger plyers which is why they were allowed to leave. Nothing to do with money.

This season however, I see none of the problems which have marred our title challenges of the past 6 years and shortened our cup runs. The team is flying high, scoring lots of goals and conceding fewer. Younger players have improved immensely, Theo Cesc Nasri and RvP are all nearing the finished article – and our so called injury curse is likely to affect us much less now we have so many more options for squad cover.

I am not saying we will 100% win the league or the CL/CC/FC or even that we will definitely do better than last year. What I am saying is that the 1ST TEAM and not only that but the SQUAD have improved steadily over the last 6 years; so I am convinced we will fare far better than the last 5 seasons – and we should ALL be optimistic enough to give Arsenal an excellent chance to win SOMETHING this season, a fair chance of winning more than a single trophy; and perhaps even an outside chance of doing the impossible (again) by going unbeaten all season or even winning a treble!

And that isn’t counter moaner propaghanda, nor is it sensationalist back-chatting. It is the considered opinion of a knowledgable 27 year old fan, who regularly visits games collated with the stats for the previous 6 years and factoring in the improvement / decline of the surrounding teams.

ManU needed to sign some more players, Chelsea will not last the distance either – Whilst Man City have spent lots of money and squad numbers on expensive players no better or worse than their own.

Robihno out, Adebayor benched, Bellamy out, Balotelli is their only potential awesome striker. And that is if he doesn’t get injured or lose confidence. They won’t win anything at all until they replace Mancini and stop buying mid-table players and selling off their top performers.

Soo when you look at all the facts and the history of the last 5/6 seasons plus the above factors: actually the team who have made the biggest and most consistent improvement is ARSENAL under the management of ARSENE WENGER with ALMUNIA in goal, and the actual stadium FULL OF REAL FANS who would never dream of even joking, that if we don’t sign a player from some 17yr olds FM team then they will stop buying the season tickets (that their Gold loving / Football ignorant daddy brought them).

    So to re-iterate;

@the moaners – cheer up you cheeky sh!tes and go read up on the game (not the ‘modern game’ which I am assuming is more about economics than football) and come back with some research to back up your paper-thin views

    @the measured opinion fans and visitors who talk sense;

    Arsenal have got the best chance in years to win something this season – maybe the league and something else too if we get the famous ‘rub of the green’. So rather than waste our time arguing the pro’s and con’s of FIFA10s stats in comparison with actual real-life experience of these players;

We should just type -IGNORED into a message after we read it and be done with that person until they stop chatting such rubbish :)

COME ON ARSENAL!!! On the agend this season:

Spurs Carling Cup revenge – we need to hand them a proper whooping like the blackpool 6-0

Chelsea League revenge – spank em home and away 2-0

ManUtd CL revenge – dump them out but without resorting to loser tactics like cheating or conning the ref.

Almunia to prove his worth to the squad as either a number1 keeper or at the very least an excellent number2 to Mannone/Chesney if they step it up this season.

That is all :) Essay finished

And by the way why is everybody obsessed with pointing the finger?

    “It’s Wengers fault!”
    “It’s Mark Hughes!”
    “It’s Almunia!”
“It is because we always buy crocks and our defence is poor!”

Get a grip people … One player (goalkeeper) cannot cause a team to lose out on a league win or concede 15 less goals, just the same as having a team of of 11 strikers doesn’t mean you will score 4 goals in every single match you play.

Real football is more affected by the state of the squad and team in general, in terms of quality, training, balance, confidence, and improvement relative to history and other teams.

Money doesn’t come into it at all, hence why Abramovic buying Chelsea for £140M and spending £100 million on new players in their first season they only managed to finish 2nd. City have similarly lavished silly money on new players and facilities and installed a new manager (every season) and got precisely nowhere!

Money is only useful when you buy the correct things with it, and even then only when you continue the trend of spending – ala ManUtd’s falling behind Chelsea coinciding with the lack of transfer funds they now have.

Arsenal don’t deal with the game in this manner, hence why we have spent just shy of £65M on our 18 first team regulars whereas United spent nearly that amount just on Berbatov (ineffective 90% of league since joining United) and Rooney (Inconsistant since joining United), £32.5M and £30M that is £62.5 million on just 2 players. One of which who has been rubbish and the other who is about to have a shocker of a season …

i think we should give Almunia one last chance..i hope he’ll be as good as he was in the barcelona CL home game..If not we mustn’t forger wojciech szczesny,he’s a little young yes but if i do recall he has gotten rave reviews from brentford when he was on loan..i mean casillas was only 18 when he put on the gloves for real madrid and look where he is now..let’s just hope it’ll turn alright..GOONER FOR LIFE

In Almunia? Yes, i believe we can. He will try hard to prove himself this season. But our No.2 seems to be a HUGE PROBLEM. Flapianski? It’s like doomsday coming in.

i think almunia is ok, inconsistent at times but decent. fabianski though is poor, and i think mannone deserves the no2 spot instead, he had some superb performances last season.

I think we are blaming the keeper too much. I think the defence is more shaky than the keeper..letting in more people to give dangerous balls in the box.. almunia is not that bad of a keeper. I hope that the later happens

The fact that we didn’t concede any goals on set pieces against Blackburn shows that we’ve improved a bit in that area. Still a little shaky – but a lot more confident than last season. All we had to do was adjust our tactics a little bit to counter these ‘rugby scrum’ teams who try to make sure that the keeper cannot move. Look at what Stoke tried against Tottenham – Gomez was having a horrid time – he looked exactly like Fabianski on corners.

i think what wenger has done is the right thing in letting gallas go,all mouth and no action especially after his silly paddy he had at Birmingham thats not the sort of example you want to show to the younger players.I think almunia will improve now that gallas’s ego is not there to upset everyone. Vermallen is turning in to a quality defender and just needs a good partner with him in the middle hopefully koschelmy or sqwilly will be the answer if not there’s always alex song.
As for the goal keeping end of things i think wenger should have gone all out to land joe hart that would have made everyone happy. At the other end of the pitch i feel that wenger needed to land another striker, yes RvP is top quality but is struggling with injury AGAIN and barn door Bendtner not a regular finisher and vela struggling as well, i just hope Chamakh can add to the goals to take the pressure off of RvP and King Theo.

To look at things, Almunia PERFORMS under pressure. In 07-08, people were looking down on him and he produced a solid season. 08-09 was the same!

And against Blackburn, he played great! probably due to the pressure of all the fans. However, now I am worried because Fabianski second in the pecking order is not really what I called pressure to perform. So good luck Almunia! He is no dud. His concentration can be a bit.. so hopefully he keeps his head screwed in properly, and does some good this season.

The only chance for Arsenal to win a Silverware is to buy Silvesters !!!!AW lied to us again and he should be banned by us. Bring a banner to Emirate Stadium saying GO HOME LIAR GO HOME, and boo him when shows his stinking face, but support our boys coz they deserve a better coach, and manager and they suffer enough season after season loosing to not only top EPL teams, but to Wigan (after they were ahead 2-0)loosing 3-2 courtesy of Fabiansky. His dishonest and cheat.

  64. GoonerOzone says:

Why is some of us fans so negative minded? It beggars believe to think some of so called gooners could have such a negative mindset just because we couldn’t get another goalkeeper.

Yes we haven’t won the premiership since 2004, we have come close several times but frustratingly trophyless and yes Wenger may have made some mistakes in terms of sticking to his frugal policy in not opening the purse when sometimes needed such as this much anticipated Schwarzer deal; I’m as gutted as so many of you but this shouldn’t mean we should discount our chance of winning regardless of not having a goalkeeper or not having more experienced players to bolster the squad just in case of injuries as has been the case in the last three seasons.

I remember Wenger sticking to his back four after a poor defensive 2002/03 season with the press totally writing off Arsenal’s chance of mounting a challenge as they always have and guess what; they went on to become the unbeatable 2003/04. Would anyone have predicted that? I don’t think so. We seem to be fuelled by what the press say all the time but we are better off supporting the team and Wenger regardless of what the situation is whether we get our insatiable requests satisfied or not.

It’s one thing to be slag off by rival fans, it’s another to encourage them by not placing confidence in our team. Let’s be proud of what we have; believe me rival teams will wish to have what we have regardless of the successes from Chelsea and Man U especially when our master plan start to yield titles.

    Come on you Gooners!!!

  65. lets pray the loud criticizm of almunia will gear him to positive performances.remember eboue, walcott seems to be d savior now but we were all witness to chris waddle’s ‘no brain jibe’on d lad.shallowmindedness only makes u scratch the surface of issues.almunia has been impressive in d last 3 games.lets not 4get he was being touted 4 england place awile ago by the same hypocrites criticizing him now including fans of d club down d road.

Almunia is not a bad shot stopper, he is just a poor decision maker, not very brave, and this all comes to surface in big games because he cant handle the pressure of playing for a big club, thats why most his mistakes come in big games.

I agree with those who say Almunia is not good enough and of course fabianski is a disaster. but we have never seen vito or snzey(watever name he has) played in top flight. but i prefer anyone of these two to be the number 2 replacing fab. The most humiliating part is the trophy drought. even portsmouth fan despite being relegated is laughing at arsenal’s trophy collection and what can we do but just cross our finger and wait for a cup this season. TO AW–> at least one cup to let us start speaking.
