Coquelin set for new Arsenal contract this week
Francis Coquelin will sign a contract extension at Arsenal (with a pay rise) in the coming days according to The Sun, who it must be said is not the most reliable source of news lately, but there is little reason for them to be making this one up.
In his nine appearances for Arsenal this season, it is fair to say that he has shown himself to be a capable deputy to Alex Song. Perhaps a little less commanding or dynamic than his Cameroonian counterpart, Coquelin though has shown that he can hold a midfield effective and more importantly that he has a future at the club.
Coquelin previously spoke about wanting to leave the club for the lack of first-team opportunities – Emmanuel Frimpong is the other man who can deputise for Alex Song – and while some Arsenal fans might find Frimpong to be a better defensive midfielder (or otherwise), there is no fair comparison that can be made between these two players who have different playing styles.
Whether or not Coquelin will feature regularly, him signing a new contract would be good news for Arsenal. The lack of depth has always been a problem at Arsenal since the move to the Emirates Stadium and really, Arsene Wenger can use every quality player (which Coquelin is) he can get right now through this gruelling period in the Premier League. With games being played every few days, having more players for rotation is necessary.
The news may just be speculation and Coquelin might indeed leave, but if it is true I see no reason for Arsenal fans to protest against keeping a young talented footballer.

Indeed a good news to hear for the Gunners. IMO this kids has shown to all of us that he has what it takes to play in the EPL for his position. He just need to be more patient and wait for his chance. Arsenal always have a history of quality French defensive midfielder in Vieira, Flamini and Petit. Maybe it will be Coquelin next.

I think coquelin is a quality DM. Look at song two years ago, he committed way too many fouls and wasn’t near as adept at going forward as he is today. But Arsene has taught him well and I believe coquelin can step up hid quality in a couple years also.
Merry Christmas gooners

Well the boy is clearly not happy with occasional carling cup appearances. Obviously there’s no space in the starting 11 for him – unless we do the ridiculous and drop Song to the bench for HIM. I think we should let him move to France.. And keep those young players who are patient enough to understudy their seniors

I dont we need replacements for samir but cesc is a different proposotion. nasri was played wide left most of the.time here anyway.
i really like coquelin and i think the way him and frimpong works together is intriging and just offers us a defensive.barrier solution that song and arteta does not as they both like to push up. perhaps those 2 with wilshire would give us a different dimension in certain games.
i think a 9 man squad of central midfielders that can rotate around the 3 positions is the way forward. it is just a matter of getting the right 9. song arteta ramsey frimpong wilshire coquelin seem to have nailed 6 of those slots. it is then between benayoun rosicky diaby (the current remaining 3) lansbury ozyakup henderson denilson aneke and any potential signings over the next 2 windows. i cannot really see more than 9 central midfielders being required over a season.
i also want to see us get a settled 9 man strike force to rotate the 3 forward positions. rvp walcott gervinho is the main 3 chamakh park arshavin chamberlaina ryo afobe is the likely supporting 6 although i am not convinced that bendtner vela campbell and watt are not better options than park chamakh arshavin and afobe. the next 2 windows again are perfect opportunities to weed out the meek.

Yeah I like Coquelin, he’s more technically gifted & faster than Frimpong, although Frimpong is great at tackling and retaining possession.
We should hold onto Coquelin, he’s still green but just needs more experience

He was played out of position against Villa. This boy is good, he has determination and is quick. We need to play him more. From what I’ve seen of Ramsey lately, I’d rather play Coquelin. Ramsey has been very dissapointing, gives the ball away too often (statistics read the most so far in the league) so I’d rather play someone who is quicker and can hold the ball better. Cause let’s face it Song is class, no ways Coquelin will replace him anytime soon.

@Einar – There are 2 suspect players in that bunch, maybe 3.
First of all Jenkinson is too slow and a bit clumsy. He runs a bit like Bendtner. Our RB and LB need to be quick as lightning, or have extraordinary anticipation (Santos).
Ramsey is another one. He lacks speed and control. Statistics show that he looses the ball more often than any other player in the premier league. He just isn’t up to scratch in my opinion. Occasionally he will put through a great ball, but he is way too inconsistent.
I would rather see Gotze in his position.

at samuel
he only looked out of sorts because he was playing at right back which obviously isnt his favoured position. Try to use your brain before making stupid comments! Haven’t you seen this guy play, he’s been exceptional in the carling cup, wenger also want’s him to stay because his potential is massive. Mark my words, you may think i’m crazy by saying this but he will be a mainstay for arsenal at the DM position.
