Coquelin wants out due to lack of games – What does he expect?

Posted on November 10, 2011 by admin

He may be only 20 years old and only just emerging into Arsène Wenger’s first team, but Francis Coquelin has accused Arsenal of treating him unfairly in not giving him enough playing time.

Speaking to France Football, the midfielder said, “”I thought I had a shot to play so I decided to stay at Arsenal. I played a lot at first, even big games, but when players came back from injury I just disappeared… It is often said that when you are young you have time but I played a whole season at Lorient and now I’m virtually not playing at all. It’s annoying. Given my playing time for sure the idea of a departure this winter is in my head.”

His comments certainly appear ungrateful at Wenger’s willingness to play the young Frenchman in major contests, such as in the Spurs defeat in which he was voted Man of the Match. In fact, Coquelin has started in more games (4) than Oxlade-Chamberlain has (3), despite the fact that the latter cost Arsenal £15 million and is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in England.

Considering he only made one substitute appearance for the first team in 2008/09 and just a pair of starts last season, it is strange that he envisaged himself playing regular games in the main squad this campaign. There’s little doubt that he is yet another excellent Wenger creation but very few can reach the dizzying heights that Jack Wilshere has. Perhaps the Under 21 international hasn’t yet realised that nobody can walk into the first team, especially when in its current run of exceptional form.

A loan move could dampen his frustration but as one of three holding midfielders in and near the first team, an injury to Song or Frimpong could make him an important option to have available. On top of this, his performances for the club are becoming increasingly frequent and impressive. Still, statements like those that he has made are not what Arsenal want in a time when the team is truly coming together.

He is unquestionably expecting far too much at this stage of his Arsenal career and it could well be coming to a premature end if he doesn’t lower his expectations fast. What more could the grouchy youngster have expected from his time at the Emirates?

He has the right mentality if he wants to play and it shows character, we should appreciate that. Arsenal has arguably had to many players that were too soft and if Coquel;in wants to be reckoned with, this is the way to about expressing yourself. It is up to the manager to manage expectations and Arsene will need to proof he can handle this, he is paid enough so we should expect him to do his job properly.
Coquelin has every right to speak up as he has alraedy proven that he can cut it in the first team. I’m sure he’ll get his chance and that he will take it with both hands

Its good to hear that he wants more action but he also has to lower his expectations. Currently Song is on song and cant do no wrong. What Coquelin needs is to use this time to grow as a member of the first team. Wenger has already shown confidence in him, it is now up to him to keep pushing Song and Frimpong, his time will come.

A first team player at Arsenal needs not only skill but should have the mental and physical strength to play every three days at the highest level of international football. He might have played all season at Lorient but the pressures of being a Gunner are much higher and he needs time to develop and understand the level of football that is now required of him.

i think it’s a good ideal of him going to other clubs to adapt first team experience…
yeah… i really support him, i’ ll like him to go, and come back next season, because he’s really important in the club…
i think that ‘ll make wenger to buy M’VILLA, and M’VILLA has much experience than COQUILIN, let him go and come back next season, and that ‘ll be battling for both…M’VILL & FRIMPONG…

departure this winter ??? oh my god,the boy is so ungrateful.this is the last thing i expected from him considering, how he was playing.atleast frimpong wont have such a big head for sure.

he talks as if his been treated like this for some 2 seasons.only now the boys stepped into the eye of the public, and immediately he talks like this.his hunger to play and work hard is unquestionable, but if you are not ready to make some sacrifices for the team and wait for your chances, then you may as well leave ……….

thanks to softer contract rules, its become normal for any player to threaten that they will leave through the media.nowadays contracts just a formality for a player to stay as long as he wants.

    ———————–
Don’t agree LT, Song ignores a lot of his (mainly defensive) duties in midfield and is extremely lucky that Arteta is his partner. I would prefer Song to be more defensively disciplined and leave Arteta more space for creative input in the offense, he’ll add more to the attack than Alex. As a matter of fact Coq would right now do a better job than Alex Song. Not saying Alex is bad, far from it but he has flaws he doesn’t deal with. Maybe with the growing competition he’ll start realising that his first team place is not automatic.

why are you all getting at coqelin, he never said he would like to leave the club, he just wants to go out on loan again… he was denied a chance to go to lorient for this season, i think in july cos he was promised more 1st team chances, and he only said he is annoyed that he isn’t playing, but only and ONLY wants too go out on loan to improve, so he can push for the 1st team next season… you should at least apologize for writing unproven rumors, started by shitty sites… and isn’t it surprising that every international break someone ”wants to leave” arsenal…

I really like coquelin on the pitch, he will be a damn good DM. I’m afraid this might lead to him demanding money when he breaks through to first team action like malice’s predicting. I hope not but for now the boy’s got some stiff competition for first team action and it’s not only with personel. We get’s tactics require his mids to be broth active in attacking and defending and demanding they work their asses off to get back and cover on defense.

    @Alexs
Wenger incourages song to rotate with Arteta and Ram to improve his attacking prowess, including dissecting passes. I would argue that when Song gets to the next level in his attacking he will be compared to xavi’s role at Barcelona than Sergio busquets. Song is world class my opinion.

I suppose you think Song is worthy of a start every week. And don’t mention mr ego frimpong who won’t ever make it in our team.

So what was he supposed to say – “I am so glad I am not playing”.

The media forces words out of the lads and then make such a huge fuss about it.

I found nothing wrong about what he said and as a matter of fact, I wish he could be granted a loan move to some other team to continue playing.

One of them Frimpong and Coquelin have to go on loan somewhere as they both are back-ups of the most durable player Arsenal have at the moment, Alex Song and therefore, they won’t be able to get playing time. What is so hard to understand there.

I hate international breaks as papers and website have to be filled and there is nothing to say but non-sense.

What’s next?, Arsenal to swap with AC Milan, Van Persie for Pato.

  28. Luke T. says:

@Freddy Koigi – What he could have said was the usual stuff like “I want to play more and I will keep working hard to reach my goal of getting more games for Arsenal”.

Instead, he has set his targets far too high and expects far too much. If he fancied a loan move or a permanent move, fair enough. He could’ve just said “I want to move on”. However, the way that he put it just makes him sound like an ungrateful brat who really doesn’t appreciate the chances he has been given by Wenger already. He needs to grow up and realise the opportunity he has at the Emirates. To describe his part in one of the most famous and succesful clubs in the world as “annoying” is shameful.

@ Luke T, The media takes us fans as a stupid bunch and we never should let them sway us that way.

Like in Francis Coquelin case, WE WERE NOT TOLD what question he was responding to before saying what he said.

I will tell you my guess. Since he was Yann M’Vila deal away from rejoining Lorient on another season long loan, so I guess they asked him. “You were just about to rejoin Lorient on a season long loan in Summer, Now that you don’t get much games would you still join them in winter on loan?

But of course, fans are supposed to be fooled and made to curse their players and so, they make it like he was shouting from the roof-top.

It keeps happening and fans keep letting the media use them like fools by paying for their shitty stuff.

What?? of course thats going to happen because the players that came back from injury have earned their right to play, he still has to prove himself but he is young and his performances have been good so far but he must learn to be patient as Luke says above if there are injuries or players need to be rested he will get play time, but again consistency is the key and if Wenger sees that it is achieved he will give him more play time.
