Does Thomas Vermaelen Hold The Key To Jan Vertonghen’s Future?
Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen are close friends, having played together at Ajax and for the Belgium national team. If the latest reports coming out of Holland are true then Vermaelen could be the key as to where Vertonghen plays his future football.
Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen was a target for Arsenal during the recent transfer window, and could be again in January. A source close to the Ajax club has said about Vertonghen, “We know he’s leaving, but not when. Maybe in January.”
Vertonghen has spoken before about his interest of playing in England and his close friendship with Vermaelen could just tip the balance in Arsenal’s favour. The Ajax source said, “The fact Thomas and Jan are friends isn’t lost on Wenger. Maybe a right word will make the difference for Arsenal.”
It will be interesting to see what develops in January with regards to new defenders. Gary Cahill is still an expected target, but according to reports Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea and Spurs are all in the running to sign him now. Which player, and this question is just about defenders not midfielders, would you like to see at the Emirates in January. Gary Cahill or Jan Vertonghen? Or Both?

both. although it’s too much to ask for, i think arsenal can score it’s just that against small teams they just can’t defend.

i would prefer to see Jan Vertonghen, Cahill althou good and well established in the premier league Jan Vertonghen is are far better defender

i cant see arsenal being forcefull enough to sign cahill, all the top clubs have and need agression in the transfer market to make things happen we as a club just never seem bothered enough about signing any player and maybe thats cost us.
Up untill march this year kosh and johan were superb and an important part of a team pushing for four honours, now we say they arent good enough and want players like johan to leave. To be honest i dont care who comes in coz if we dont start backing the players already here it wont make a blind bit of difference!
The squad is so much more balanced and stronger than last year, but if we dont support them and they dont believe this mess will continue. They just need time and space and encouragement and im certain the quality will shine through, surely we atleast owe them that?

both! set up could be somthng like this: schz gk, vert and cahil Cb’s, sagna Rb, verm/santos Lb, ramsey and arteta cm’s, gerv Lm, walcot Rm, vpersie Cf (free role), ??? St. we need to sign a top class striker to help RVP aswell.

Funny how all the big teams want the players we have been after for ages. It’s almost as if they are using Wenger and co as scouts…..very unfair. This time we will have to offer the right amount up front if we want these players. Both Cahill and Veronghen would be great. Hazard and M’vila in MF. and one more world class striker up front. Someone who chases and can shoot. So 5 new signings in January please Mr Wenger. WE NEED THEM.

It’s all good and well talking about new signing and we need them so we don’t get left behind but what about the players we could lose,v persie,walcott,vermaelen,song lets sort this out first.

We need players with a NEVER SAY DIE, attitude and technically good, like M’vila, cahil,Dempsey and a creative mid.Jan wld give added quality as well.

Fellow gooners dont get your hopes up so high, be realistic because come febuary 1st 2012, if so many signings are not made especially the ones we want u will be angry,upset,f-ing and blinding at Mr Wenger or whoever most likely there wont be 4,5 or more signings made. 1 or 2 is the figure and 3 would be a treat from wenger, but anymore than that i dont see happening,and i can bet my house on that.Mr Wenger just may sign 1 of the names we were linked with in the summer, however the other 1 or 2 players we sign and thats if we do will most likely be players on the same level as Santos or Benayoun, that example being that they will be good decent players but not the top wanted players full of skills and blessed with magic on the pitch. Personally for me Cahill and perhaps Van der vart if possible would be great, something like that anyways if you understand what i mean?. Remember folks when your wishing,dreaming or even hoping for signings to be made, its really in a way u demanding that and when it doesent happen you get mad, so set urself some realistic targets and in that way at least you just may be a bit happy and impressed.

Vertonghen would certainly be a better choice as he can also play as a DM, which will give us more flexibility in rotating the players and when injuries occur.

Only paddy1 is being realistic. Arsenal already have Tv5,Mert,Kos,Squil,Johan and miqual. 6 Defenders. Buying another one means more players getting paid to not play. Wenger would have to at least replace them but nobody wants squil or johan. What arsene needs to focus on more is midfield as someone needs to complement Arteta. Also keep in mind African cup of nations means Chamakh,Gervinho,song and frimpong will all be out so they need some cover. I would like to see at Goetze but i doubt it will happen

I would much prefer Vertonghen. He can play pretty much anywhere across the back line and can also play as a dfensive midfielder. He’s much more versatile than Cahill…and I think Cahill is WAY over rated.

Sign Verthogen. Its no rush getting two CB cause Vermalen will be back and Mertesacer is really good when he just gets used to premier league. What i am worried about is if Sagna gets injured and Jenkison is a backup. I know hes young and has a potensial but really right now he sucks. In January I would prefer: Verthogen, Marvin, Mvilla, Hazard and a top striker with some guns.

I’d like to see vert, his partnership with Verm, no matter where Verm is, would be solid. Cahill would be icing on the cake. Go after m’villa, hazard/Dempsey, and p. Cisse as well. I think this is a dream of mine to see all 5 of these signings even though we could obviously affordthem but I agree we must focus on resigning our important players we have right now first. But if they won’t consider resigning until January, the board must appease them with signings in January.

I thought Jan Vertonghen was always playing as a Midfielder. Anyway good if we buy him, he can play at center half, left back or midfield. Can Cahill play at center midfield?

there’s a homegrown status rule… and as far as I know We only signed internationals and chamberlain. So we are kind of failing on that matter.
I don’t think cahill is overrated, but maybe vertoghen can do better, hard to guess which is really true.
I also think Jack rodwell will do a good partner to wilshere and Ramsey.

reason: he has PL experience, his 1 of the best DM in the PL, his good in the air, he likes arteta,he has an afro, his SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper n better n has been strongly targeted by the likes of RM N INTER but rejected coz he wants 2 remain in the EPL, their is an exodus begginning at everton, his contract runs out in 12months, gives us a better chance at getting hazard

reason: i'd prefer hazard coz he is more of a nasri replacement (as we already replaced fabregas with ramsey, wilshere n arteta competing 4 his place) n has a Gr8 link with gervinho n will allow us 2 play walcott as RVP's deputy n giving those CF chances his craving as well as keeping gervinho in the Right flank rather than the Left but gotze is just as good or better but is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY 2 EXPENSIVE n probably thinks his too good 4 us anyway coz every1 thinks bundesliga is better than ligue 1 (So not true)
EVALUATION: verma would definitely sign a new contract, they'd all fit in straight away with ex team mates, vermaelen n obviously eachother, they r all affordable, only problem is if the belgium national team play in anything during the season we're f#cked cos half our team is gone

Vertoghen is abetter economical option and leave money for a more pressing option: a solid viera replacement like M’villa or senna , de jong, falminin (maybe lure him back) .vertoghen can also play the holding role so he would def be a good buy

I am so eciting at the prospects that Arsenal could have at the club but with Wenger he will most likely not sell anyone and buy like 1 player ! Oh god if I was manager I would do AFC wonders, I would buy at least 7 players in the form of a back up keep for szczesney in scwarnzer. A top LB in the form of baines and a english international so after A Cole retires AFC will jave that left back line for next 10 years in the form of baines and gibbs. I would sign both Cahill & Vertonghen. I would also buy Hazard as a replacement for Nasri along with M’Vila to partner wilshere and an extra attacker in form of odemwingie. AFC would be so sick with these signing also the bench would be better with taarbt. We would have twp top keepers in szczesney and scwarnzer, the best defender/left back in prem with baines and 2 great back ups in gibbs and santos, 4 great CB’s in vermaelen, vertonghen, cahill and mertesacker and the best RB in prem in form of sagna with potiental in jenkinson. In midfield we would have m’vila and cover in song and frimpong and in attack we have wilshere with back up in arteta and ramsey and great wingers in gervinho and hazard along with great attackers in chamakah, van persie and walcott, song and finally arshavin !!!
